[Q] AOSP ROM for Galaxy S?

Hey guys, been out of the loop for a while as I've been settled on JPY for a few weeks now. However, I saw a friend flash his Desire today with Oxygen, a gingerbread-based AOSP ROM. All the SGS ROMs I can find so far are based on the stock Samsung firmware - is there any work being done on a full AOSP ROM like Oxygen or Cyanogen? I can't find any details about this anywhere.

I am very curious about this question. Because if answer is simply no, it's time to sell Galaxy S. Gingerbread will be the last update from Samsung and AOSP could be the future of this phone then CM7 for SGS seems to have big problems and it's the only AOSP ROM for SGS which I'm aware of...

What big problems?
I'm using CM7 for a month right now and it's pretty stable if i can say. Yes, it lacks some features and some bugs are not fixed yet (theres a workaround tho), but if you follow it's thread the progress they make are great. They're already into mainline, so probably it will reach RC status in a month/maybe less, who knows.
After the devs are done, i think there will be a custom ROM based on CM7/AOSP.

CM7 is getting there. And with Gingerbread coming out, that should make things easier for the dev.

Yes, but with no source then there is nothing big. GB leak, only helped them with "less" important stuff (FM radio, etc.)

Update Ice Cream Sandwich

I am using Samsung Galaxy S android version 2.2, I want to update it to Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0 or which ever is available. I read the instructions but I did not understand anything from it. I am doing it for the first time so I want to know step by step details or if there is any video. I also want to know few things
1- Will android market work
2- Will the phone have lags or speed get slower in the video it did not but I want to know.
3- Will I get all feature of Ice Cream Sandwich
4- In future if company releases 4.0 for galaxy s can I roll back the changes and turn it back to the original version which was there and if yes then how??
I have never tried such thing so I want to be sure before I do it. It looks pretty good in the video.

Firstly, welcome to xda. There currently isnt a proper samsung version of ICS for the galaxy s. What there is are several custom roms people have made based on ics, which if you read through their posts you will see that most of them still have issues and/or bugs. If you check this out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363593 these guys are getting closer every time to a full working version of ics for the galaxy s.
So, choices for you are wait until samsung release a full version of ics (which looks very doubtful) or flash the afore mentioned ics rom or flash a different rom that takes your fancy. Myself I am flicking between this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1344489 (my current rom) and saurom.
Once you decided what you wanna do, then let us all know and we will guide you in the right direction.

My advice is to stay on samsung based ROMs for now. ICS ports are still alpha, although some people are using them for everyday. On the other hand, most GB XXJV? and XWJW1 roms are running quite fast on the Galaxy S. Coming from 2.2 you will see a big difference going into 2.3.6.
My personal choice is SURFACE v8 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1155776) with the IceCreamS theme (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1386990).

I would like to knw when the full working version of ICS is available so tht before I update I could assure myself being safe to update the phone. I am not waiting for Samsung update but I want a proper Rom which suits the phone

Samsung said it won't be releasing any official ICS on Galaxy S. So all ICS work is made by dev teams, using the ICS source code and ICS releases on similar hardware (Nexus S). Most (all?) ICS ROMs are based in teamhacksung ICS port. You can see them in the Development forum (OneCosmic, Surface v1, MyICS, ...)
Some devs will say that their roms are release-candidate, finished or even official, but be careful with this, the teamhacksung port is in alpha stage (build 11) (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363593). Moreover, there is no public roadmap for an official version and the devs don't like to be asked on ETAs.
I suggest you to read that thread to see what is and is not working in each build. Also, you can get answers to most of your questions (except ETA) on the CM9 discussion thread in this forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1387937).

Given that you have no experience flashing custom ROMs, I would also have to suggest avoiding the alpha ICS builds right now. Things will probably go wrong, whether majorly or minorly, that you aren't accustomed to dealing with.
Wait until a stable version is available, or at the very least a beta. However, in the mean time, I would definitely recommend flashing to 2.3.6. As someone else already mentioned, it will be a nice upgrade over 2.2, and it's an easy way to learn the basics of flashing ROMs.

Whats the best rom available right now for the N1? I haven't tested my N1 with anything in a while been running MIUI but I'm finding it to be sort of laggy now with apps installed.

I use now ICS by samuaz, it's fast and really stable. But it's an alpha version!
When you think it's important to have a stable rom, then
use CM7. CM7 roms are as stable as stock, but better ;-)

worth upgrading to ICS or JB?
hello. I realize this thread hasn't been active in a while, but I am thinking to bring back my Nexus One from the grave so I can have a backup phone for my daughter to play with in the car/plane. I wanted to ask if it is worth installing ICS or JB ROMs that are out there. I just have the stock ROM in there now and I always struggled with low memory and lag with some newer apps, that's why I've upgraded phones (I've have a Galaxy Nexus now).
I don't have intentions to put a SIM card in there, so I don't really care about phone call features.. only purely from a processing and lightweight standpoint.
Has anybody played enough with GB vs ICS and/or JB and weighed if it's worth upgrading? I'm assuming that it's worth it because so many developers still have Nexus One ROMs... that's why I would just go ahead and install it, but then I'm thinking again if it's just going to bog down the phone if I'm going to only use it for simple games.

Hello! I have installed the CM10.1 VJ Jelly Bean 4.2.2 v6.0 that is based on CyanogenMod and Evervolv, and works fine for me. I also have installed all the /data partition in the SD card with the A2SD script that is incorporated in the ROM... it generates some few lags, but I didn't have had any problem of lack of space again.
In my opinion, this is the ROM of JB that best preserves the native Android interface, and in my case is stable (until 7 days without to require a reboot!).
Other JB ROMs that users frequently use are PARANOIDANDROID and PixelDroid.

Thanks for the quick response! That is the ROM I was thinking of as well. However, just as a comparison, I'm thinking to flash a clean version of GB back onto the phone as well. Any recommendations on any GB ROMs as well? Thanks!

Sorry, but I can't help on it. I didn't install any GB ROM further than the stock ROM. In my opinion, I think that a stable, complete and functional ROM might be CyanogenMod 7.2. Maybe other XDA members can help you better on it...

No problem. I'll probably end up trying both out. Thanks again for the response. By the way, what do you use your N1 for now or is that you main phone? I was playing around with it yesterday and I still like it a lot - I always liked the trackball.

This is my main phone. In several times I though changing to other new Nexus device, but the screen size of new devices is too big for me! I like a screen size from 3.7 to 4.0, that is good to read mails, a brief navigation in the Internet, and other minor issues. For other intensive uses, I have my tablet Nexus 10 or my laptop.

Official ICS ROM(s) ok, or better stick with GB ROM(s)?

Hi, fellow Noters!
I have the N7000 Note, with stock GB ROM installed and only rooted, flashed with abyss kernel.
I am in the UK, so I am considering updating/upgrading to ICS... Now, from most of the posts here I gather that most of custom ICS ROMs aren't yet the most stable and people who installed the official ICS have mixed reactions...
Don't get me wrong- I am completely satisfied with my Note and the functionality of the apps as it is, but was just wondering how much improvement would I see, if I installed ICS...
Also, if I want to install official ICS ROM, do I need to unroot first and then flash it with ICS, or just straight on?

Ics is suffing from the brickbug for now, that is not to mention other issues such as baterry drain. So if you are still satiafied with gb then should hold on unrik tge brixk bug is cleared. Cheers.

If you want to do an update ics stock , you have to flash with odin 1.85 the rom that you prefere..... it is not necessary performing unroot...

I'm still running GB as it's running great. Nothing really worth upgrading to ICS.

Stay with GB. If you desperately wants ICS then flash CM9 or PA.

If you want to stay on a Touchwiz rom, then it may be better to stick with Gingerbread as it has less bugs that the TW ICS counterparts. However I would thoroughly recommend AOKP or CyanogenMod 9 if you truly want ICS; it has almost all features fully working (including camera, tethering and full access to all storage) and are both extremely light and quick. Plus both support themeing and have a wealth of customization options.
As for the brick bug, that has been almost eradicated IF you use a safe kernel such as Speed mod 3.3. Of course the worry is non existent on AOSP roms.

I am in no rush to get to ICS, as pretty much all the visual stuff can be achieved through some extra launchers and themes while still staying with stock GB ROM.
I am pretty much happy with TouchWizz, but find the Go launcher a bit more faster and easier to use. I go to TW only when I need S Memo and that stuff from the suite...
so, until the bug in the official ICS ROM is fixed, or a very stable custom ICS ROM made, I will stick with GB...

can you give instructions on just how to do just that.I've never flashed anything before, but I do have lies and Odin on my PC already and both can see my note.

I also sometimes mistype words and it is annoying when the result is actually a proper word, so it completely can confuse the recipient of the SMS, for instance...
I wonder if there are alternatives to the current ordering of letters on keyboards, you know-instead of ASDF-JKLsomething...

From what I read from other threads, it appears that the ICS and JB roms are quite stable enough as a daily driver. I have a few questions regarding these Roms. I'm still running the Apex rom which is an i9000 stock based rom on 2.3.6 for the past year or so. It has been working very well for me. I'm kinda inching to running a JB or ICS rom because of some apps wouldn't run on anything less than ICS or JB.
1. My main concern that stopped me from running ICS or JB is the EU bug. What are the chances of one who never had it before to get it?
2. I know Adobe stopped providing flash support for JB, so now because I'll be running a custom rom, will there be flash support on those roms?
3. The state of 4.2.1 appears to still be in beta for most roms, so I would assume 4.1.2 is more stable than the former, but I would like to know how does 4.1.2 compare with 4.0.4 in terms of stability?
4. I've ran CM7.1 before which was an AOSP rom, but I experienced really bad battery problems. I've tried it a few times, and nothing works to solve it, so I always end up going back to the APex Rom. Because the JB and ICS roms are AOSP-based, how would these roms compare with the stock based roms and CM7 in terms of battery life?
I really want to be sure I want to flash JB or ICS. I would like to breathe some new life into my 2.5 year old phone, but just want to make sure I know what I'm getting into first.

1. To my knowledge the EU bug is only present on ICS ROMs. I encountered it once and had read enough about it that I didn't hit the reset phone button. I went back into recovery and flashed back to jellybean with no permanent harm.
2. I haven't paid much attention to this so potentially yes and no.
3. 4.2.1 is actually pretty stable but is lacking some features that people already running custom JB ROMs have come to rely on. But yes for a fully functional and stable ROM I would suggest avoiding 4.2.1 for the time being.
4. In my opinion battery life is improved over gingerbread no matter what ROM you're running. Of course battery life is a subjective thing. I've seen screenshots where someone had their battery last 2 days on so and so rom. But that person likely didn't touch the phone the majority of those 2 days.
All in all I would suggest you go with jellybean 4.1.2 as they are very stable and honestly smoother and more responsive than ICS.
A couple things before you flash though. First make a backup of your efs folder. You'll thank me later if you end up needing it. Secondly going from where you are to where you want to end up is a major jump in software versions which includes a partition layout change specifically if you are going to Jellybean. So the first time you flash the ROM the flash will complete very quickly(less than 5 seconds). If you try to boot after that flash you'll get stuck in a boot loop. Don't worry though just reboot back into recovery which should have updated with the first flash. Then just flash the ROM again as well as the gapps and you'll be golden.

Yes, flash it still supported. Just not needed by adobe.
Battery problem can come from so many things and usually is user based. We use apps like BetterBatteryStats to narrow it down though.
As for 4.1.2 and 4.2.1. I would highly suggest 4.1.2 for now until 4.2.2 comes out.

I've running CM10.0 stable release, JB 4.1.2, and have found it to be more stable, smoother, and reliable than stock GB with Corn 7 kernel.
I was also concerned about EU bug.
I couldn't find any evidence than anyone had experienced the EU bug on JB.
Skip ICS and go for it!
