Every now and then, my screen brightness keeps on lowering automatically. Sometimes, brightness gets reduced to half, sumtimes even lower!
All the settings under power saving is turned off + under display -> Auto adjust screen power is also unchecked…
Anybody knows wht can be this issue ???
I believed you could try disable this option too. As it also dim your screen according to the image or program showed on screen.
Hope this help.

Hi again, I just found another thing to make the screen dim after I set screen to low light.
When I set light to low. Any program I used will not effect to screen light except the build-in browser. When I open the browser my screen dim itself to high brightness.
As I recalled, build-in browser have function to dim the screen too. Maybe other programs may have this function and can effect screen dim.
Hope this may help.

I also have this problem of ramdom screen dimming.
Auto brightness unchecked. The same thing with unchecking auto config screen.
May be it's a conflict with the inner brightness of the default browser.

Despite doing this manually in the settings, occasionally the brightness goes up due to unknowns. Is there a way to keep the brightness always low?

If you swipe along the notification bar at the top you can increase or decrease the screen brightness.
"it's a feature not a bug"
i hated it myself till i read somewhere that (only if you deactivate auto-brightness) you can increase/decrease the brightness by swiping left/right on your notification panel! it happens often by mistake when you pull it down ... thats your problem
in the new froyo rom's this is no longer the case so now i use auto-mode and wait will this "feature" is no more
edit: Intratech...too fast

I never noticed this actually.. Also ensure though in the browser you have set brightness manually there
have the same problem, but i find the auto brigthness setting saves my battery more rather than accidentally turning it maximum brightness
I tried the "Dimmer" and "Brightness!" apps from the market. But none of them 'Keep' the brightness at the minimum always.
I've noticed 3 places where the brightness can be set - 1st being the web browser, 2nd the actual settings option, and 3rd the video player. Currently, I disabled the auto brightness control and I've set all 3 places to 1 step above minimum. Seems to work for me.
Also, I have a widget on the home screen to set/monitor the brightness level, it's called 'Brightness Widget by Stark Technology Inc.'.

its a bug in ddjf3 try a different rom. maybe jg5 or jm2.
I find that my screen doesn't dim enough when I'm in a dark room. I've obviously taken manual control over brightness. I k ow its possible for the screen to to dimmer because my alarm application can dim the screen. But is like a way for this to be system wide. Does anybody know a way of doing this?
If you can share I'd be most appreciative.

I use something called screen filter from the market. It puts something similar to a black screen overlay on the screen and allows you to control how much it dims.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
You can also get an app called Curvefish Brightness Level which will dim your screen lower. The phone controls only allow you to bring it down to 8%, I believe. This app lowers the brightness to 0%, which makes a difference.
For further dimming, use the app recommended above.
My eyes thank you both. I tried Curvefish's solution and it couldn't do low enough (works well, but my room is pitch black at night. Would work for someone in a theater which is why I'm keeping it). Screen filter works extremely well for my needs. The only downside is it does some funky things to blacks when enabled. I can live with that, and its a small price to pay for might time reading comfort.
Thanks again.
EDIT And if anyone wants to know, I'm using Alarm Clock Plus. I like it a lot.

I use the screen filter to lower my brightness to the lowest possibly I want. But is there an App that can increase my brightness to where its brighter than when you go to
Setting -> display -> brightness and put it all the way to the left?.
Basically I'm asking if there is an app that can make your phone brighter than the normal limit.

I think you mean when you pull it all the way to the right.
Although I don't have a definite answer to this question my guess is that it does not exist. I would imagine that the phone physically can not get any brighter then that setting allows

Thanks for catching the error. It's to the right....
And I guess your sort of right but. I was wondering because I realized that my brightness went up a little bit when I opened a flashlight app when I had full brightness.... is it just some illusion? Lol

Does anyone kno of an app that can lower the lowest brightness level? I tried screen filter but i dnt like the tint it uses n it kinda distorts the quality of images and videos shown. I tried googling stll no luck. The lowest brightness level is still brite at nite.....
Have you tried turning off the Auto brightness feature and then manually reducing the brightness in the display options?
If you turn off Auto Brightness in your Display Settings, you can run your finger left or right along the top slide-down menu bar (the one that displays time, battery, signal, etc) to decrease or increase the screen brightness.
Srry i meant lowering the brightness lower than the lowest level limit. The screen is still to brite for me at the lowest level at nite.

Use this software from Android Market,
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.curvefish.widgets.brightnesslevel&feature=search_result
Android Os will report you zero brightness when you change it in settings, but still it has 8% brightness enabled, so the above software will help you to pulling it back to original 0%
Even better than that, I remember supercurio (iirc, or was it hardcore?) hacked the SGS kernel to enable to an even lower brightness setting ages ago. However I haven't seen this hack integrated into any kernels for ages (unless I'm missing something and it's already there)
Hardcore's Speedmod K13E kernel for 2.2.1 has a super low brightness level
Try the dimmer app, it is better than screen filter, not as grainy.

any oficial rom with lowest minimal brightness?
thanks
I'm sorry to bring this up again...
I'm testing out the last build teamhacksung's CM9 and it came with a bunch of options to optimize the brightness.
Although I've been experimenting on this options for quite a while, the brightness is very irregular. At one moment is very dark and for no reason the brightness comes back up while I'm in total darkness.
Do you have any idea of what's causing this?
I get this as well. Also, the screen will auto-dim after a short time of inactivity. How to control this?

Also, I have a friend with the same software as me, everything the same and his Galaxy S gets much darker than mine. Even when we have them side by side.
Try Semaphore's kernel on THS ICS. It has its own auto brightness that works well and has a Dark setting.
That said, I still use screen filter on top of that in darkness.

Semaphore's kernel disables the BLN for me.
What I did was...
In the definitions put the dim level to 6. And then I added a button in the notification bar for brightness and I gave it the automatic and dim options.
That way when I'm inside doors I put it to dim and when I'm outside I change it to automatic.

In the same ROM as mine? Can you tell me where are the configurations for the BLN after installing the Semaphore kernel?
It's a great app that dims the screen and make it easier for the eyes, but I found one major bug today. While the filter is on, you wouldn't be able to install any apk's. The button is there, but you can't click it, you can only cancel. Basically it feels like your touchscreen has a dead spot right on the button.
Anyways I was panicking thinking my nexus 7 went crazy, and I uninstalled a lot of apps just to find the culprit. So this is just hoping no one else panic like I did. I also already emailed the developer.
1. It was discussed before, use search.
2. Stop using that crappy app and use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.omegacentauri.ScreenDim.Full for reading.

Um, I use that app, but it doesn't dim it lower than the system does. I just use it to quickly adjust the brightness instead of going into the settings.
EDIT: Yeah, I'm an idiot. That's not the same app I use. Just looks very, very similar. None the less, I tried the free version and it did not get noticeably dimmer.
I'm using the app '2x battery' which also has a screen filter feature, no problems in use, also seeing as I paid up for it it allows to filter by colours, so have set it to fade in a purply filter which basically reduces the green tinge my screen has, took some fiddling to get nice result but got double whammy of screen a little dimmer for indoor use and better colour balance, no lag or Faff so far.
Free version just allows a standard dimmer fine for most scenarios

Well I think screen filter is simple and it e works very well. I'm going to continue to use it, just have to turn it off if I'm installing apk's
I use 'Night Mode'

I am using screen filter with Sony bravia engine and it all works great. screen filter still gets blurry at lower dimness though.
Try Root dim or Voodoo display filter. Both are great for the purpose.

This thread I'm only taking about the specific app named "screen filter" though, just so people won't get confused. It works great btw, the screen can get as dim as you want.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
The app you want to use is Custom Auto Brightness by Dmitry Matuzko. It lets you set brightness levels based on your light sensor and has the option to use screen brightnesses lower than the programmed limit without using overlays. Obviously you won't be able to go lower than the hardwares limit, but in most cases the manufacturer sets the software limit much higher than the hardware limit.
Onibabar UpdateUpdate
Thanks for posting this thread! I don't even use a "screen filtering" app BUT I was having the same issue were my INSTALL BUTTON was no longer working, and because of this thread I now knew at what sort of 3rd party apps to start looking at. At first I thought it was the ROM I was on, then I thought it was only on 4.2.2 ROMs since it happened on more then one of my setups, and finally, I thought it was a Mod I always use, that gives my phone inverted apps. In the end though, it turned out to be the latest update to the Onibabar app from the Play Store. Its a app that places a battery bar on your screen and the latest update allows it to be positioned going down on either the right or left side of the screen, in addition to the top or bottom. So whenever its set to go on the left or right side, it disables the INSTALL BUTTON when attempting to install an app from a file explorer...
