I've been seeing tonnes of people experiencing odd little problems/issues with their phones after upgrading to 2.2.
Im almost positive most of these issues are the result of trying to import data (whether system, or apk) from 1.6 to 2.2
This is exactly how I upgraded, and I have experienced ZERO issues!
PLEASE READ!!!
Before you Upgrade!
DO NOT USE EMULATORS OF ANY KIND (wine, boot camp, etc...) FOR TETHERED UPGRADE. THEY WILL NOT WORK!
Use a native windows system (32bit if you can)!
BACKUP AND FORMAT
--Use Titanium Backup to backup all your contacts, SMS, and apps (DO NOT back up apps DATA).
--BACKUP everything you wish to keep on your SDCard (titanium backup folder, music, pictures, BUT NO SPECIFIC PROGRAM DATA) to your PC.
--FORMAT YOUR SDCARD THROUGH ANDROID (menu->settings->SD card and phone storage-> format card)!! Be sure to UNMOUNT your card before doing so!!
PERFORM FACTORY RESET
--Perform a factory reset on your 1.6 phone!!
UPGRADE
--Once reset, THEN perform upgrade to 2.2 on your phone.
>> Link to upgrade instructions
A good summary on how to safely upgrade to v2.2. Thumbs up!
I had already updated the other day and have had several bugs/quirks and formatting the SD card really helped. Thanks again.
I was paranoid about this myself. Even though I had a full TI backup, I skipped it, cleared root on my sdcard, and installed everything from scratch after 2.2.
Worked well at the beginning, but after adding all the widgets I wanted, it's a little slow again, but better than before.
Just wanted to say I found the ZIO Update 2.2.1 here: h t t p : / / my cricket droid [dot] c o m/ " Seemed like all other links were dead.
Happy Hunting.
Sorry wouldn't let me post a URL
Unfortunately,
I failed to see this message beforehand.
I updated my phone without doing any prep work--
Now it's freezing up, I can't view my calls, messages.. all kinds of problems.
Do I need to go back and root it?
How do I do that?

Mysticwolf59, WTF, that site won't let me sign up. Everytime I click that i'm older then 13 and hit continue it takes me to a all white page with (Access Denied) at the top left of the page.
Why is it doing that??? Also wanted to know if the download for the 2.2 rom upgrade is the Official one from Cricket?
Thank you,

sorry Mattix724 for that, I have been all over this forum and didn't see anything yet on it. My other problem is I'm still having trouble with the touch screen being sluggish and on occasion not responding or missing or skipping letters when i type them.
I have also been looking all over this forum to find out if the upgrade has already been done on the phone if you can start from scratch by factory resetting the phone, formatting the SD card and re-installing the 2.2 upgrade over top the already upgraded Rom?
thank you in advanced and I appoligize if I post in wrong thread or something i'm new to forums and haven't quite figured this one out yet. I am slowly learning as I go though.
TC
I currently have the same update on my phone. If you encounter any trouble I can provide you with the updater I used since I do realize the link has been broken a few times already. Make sure your phone has USB debugging enabled and root removed before updating. Run the update on a 32 bit windows machine, in my opinion its better than trying with my brand new 64bit win7 laptop.

I un rooted my phone and turned it off and did the update. Now my phone just flashes a bright screen. It doesn't load anything but Fastboot. I could use some help with fixing this if anyone would love to explain what files I need and how flash 2.2 to my Bricked Zio on Cricket. For the record I am able to use the command prompt in Fastboot through my computer and do fastboot -w but that doesnt fix anything. I tried to update but am confused because it posts that txt files are missing. This is a nightmare and cricket wouldn't help me when I went into the store.

i bought a used g1 on ebay for $40 and when i click on various settings it states a gmail email address but it doesnt let me change it, only enter the previous users password. how do i delete his account? should i just reset the phone to factory default? if so how do i do that? also Wifi is available right now, if i reset the phone will the wifi become locked? i dont have a data plan just prepaid plan. thanks for you help in advance
You have to reset it first. Then You will need to setup Your own google account details. You will be able to set your own wifi settings and turn off data if Your pay as you go plan not include it. Read forums and download manuals as it can save a lot of stress and money for You. Enjoy Your google device

Yes you need a gmail account to use any google app, and the app is called Android market. Just look around the phone and you should figure stuff out eventually...

Yes your wifi will become disabled, but here's a way to turn it back on:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Google_Login_via_a_WiFi_Connection
http://androidforums.com/g1-support/6564-activate-stock-g1-over-wifi.html
Choose whichever is more understandable for you
BTW, this will downgrade you to 1.0, so if you want to use newer firmware you're gonna have to root and flash a custom ROM.
I can walk you through it, if you don't know how.
that whole guide is just to enable wifi? why the hell has htc even locked out wifi???? also since your guide downgrades me to 1.00 isnt it easier for me to just install custom android firmware that gives me access to wifi, etc?

Wifi isn't accessable until after you sign into google... I just got my g1 too, but mine only cost 3 weeks of begging a friend! Without data, it's a PITA. I borrowed a friends sim card (with data) to sign in to google, and once past that, turned on wifi and switched back to my sim. Much easier if you have the option.

Yes they just want to force a data plan on you
And to install custom android firmware, then you'd need to start with 1.00
After you do the wifi thing and sign in, you go on to rooting and flashing a custom recovery. Then the rest is easy peasy. If you want to I can help you. You should install Froyobylaszlo.
im worried about bricking the device, plus on some of these guides i clicked the terminology is unclear or not explained such as "terminal", etc
I've messed with my dream so much and never bricked it
And I just rooted my first mytouch 3g slide today...

Try to follow the Cyanogen's Wiki
Here's how to setup an google account with a Wi-Fi connection:
http : // wiki . cyanogenmod . com/wiki/Google_Login_via_a_WiFi_Connection
These steps will only work if you haven't added an account yet, and you're on RC29 system software
Here you have instructions to install RC29 system software, in section "Downgrading the Firmware":
http : // wiki . cyanogenmod . com/wiki/HTC_Dream:_Rooting
If you've an GSM data plan you can just do a wipe, and then login with your data plan.
To wipe, power off your phone, turn it on while holding the "Home" button. You'll see an triangle with an "!" inside, just press Alt+L, and then Alt+w. Reboot your phone and login with your GAccount!
Complete info about all this on Cyanogen's wiki for HTC Dream:

1.0 doesn't have many apps
There's a way to upgrade...
Look it up.
I can't right now.
When I get to a computer ill post a link if you haven't found one by then
But I really recommend rooting and installing a custom rom...
the OTA update doesnt happen on wifi. im guessing this rc29 i installed is already a custom rom. so what is the best custom rom for the G1 right now? i dont want anything that will slow down the phone. what do you recommend? any easy guides? will this be easier than the other guides u posted? thanks
First, flash the original RC29 G1 firmware, it's a DREAIMG.NBH file that's flashed from the bootloader.
The market thing is kinda simple to solve. Don't use the categories and these things, use the "Search function" (Menu > Search on market).
Then, you have 2 options from here:
1. Flash the cupcake upgade OR...
2. Flash an alternative recovery from telnet.
I really recomend the second option, shorter and less MiBytes to download.
Then, the idea is to update the radio and from here you can install the new SPL/Radio combo for 14 MB extras on RAM, or the combo that you prefer. Till' here all the hard part is done, the thing that lefts to do is a wipe (recommended one from fastboot), and flash the rom/kernel that you prefer.
If you want step-by step guidance, you can follow this guide: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Dream:_Rooting
Do all the process till' the "Flashing Radio" section (do the flash radio thing, but don't do more steps).
From here, you must decide what SPL/Radio combo you prefer, the 2708+ radio and 1.33.0013d SPL is a good combo cause it allows to the phone to use 14 MB extras on RAM. The only thing is that this SPL/Radio combo is problematic with android 2.1.x and earlier, special kernels are needed and they aren't so easy to find. But if you're planning to install android 2.2.x or later, then this SPL combo will be one of the bests.
For guidance to flash radio/spl/rom/kernel and these things after following cyanogen's wiki, you can post here. Also, there are lot of threads here in XDA that guide you to do these SPL/Radio and other things, but be really carefull with them, you can harm your phone in a irreversible way.
i dont understand most of the terms you are mentioning. i downgraded to rc29. now what is the highest level of android available for the G1 that is an Official download from tmobile or htc. how do i install it?
http://androidandme.com/2009/10/beg...the-official-t-mobile-android-1-6-on-your-g1/
is that guide correct or do you have a better easier guide?
also what is the best unofficial rom to download for the G1? android 2.2? android 4? i dont know what spl is or radio, etc, what is the easiest guide for noobs? there are so many rom threads in the forum i dont know where to start. what is hands-down without a doubt the best rom available for the G1 right now, official or unofficial and a guide for it? let me know thanks. also are there any chances or bricking the phone?

About that link, better that you don't try it. You may have serious problems with so many written commands.
I'll be putting this as simple as i can
Respecting to the ROM and SPL and Radio and all those, just a few questions to decide about it:
You'll like features as share internet via WiFi, Bluetooth, USB, install aplications from market that require newest versions of Android, block ads on web pages and aplications, transfer files via bluetooth, they're kinda good stuff to try a larger guide for you? Or you won't those functions and prefer a shorter way?
Be adviced that with the shorter way you'll suffer all the T-Mobile limitations, with the larger one you'll have tons of capabilities and posibilities.
So, decide about this.
And some questions, to recommend you a ROM that adequates to your needs...
You would like the rom to be fast? To have a good look and apperance? To be stable and work apropiately and don't give you troubles/malfunction? To simply have the latest android operating system? To play games nicely? To have lot, lot of aplications installed? In resume, what will you need/require from a ROM, what are the specifications by what you'll definetively decide for them?
You have a T-Mobile G1, a Roger's/Orange one, or a Android Dev Phone 1 (this is shown when you power up the phone, the first screen tells you that)?
Your SD card is of how much gigabytes...? What class is your SD card?
And finally, yes, you've many changes to brick the phone by only doing little things bad (like 4 bad, bad clicks on your phone and you'll be done with it). So, please be carefull and patient, this will assegurate that your phone will be well configurated and don't give any trubles.
Waiting for your answers to give you more and more detailed and non harmfull steps
If you have a doubt of why so many questions, you can ask freely, I'll give you the reasons why does them matter. And... it would be faster if you answer them and ask at the same time
Ok so I am a complete noob when it comes to this stuff I am very sorry but I will need a big walkthrough on this. OK I'll tell you where I'm at. I have a Captivate (ver. 2.1 Eclair) and I want to update to the latest version. I tried getting Keis and Keis Mini but neither of them recognize my device. I have a Mac computer and I installed the drivers for the phone but that did no good Also, I would like to root my phone to get non-market apps you know, but all the flashing and which program to use is very confusing to me. Just reading the forums trying to help myself just makes my head spin. Which do I use? Heimdall or Odin? What is the safest way to backup my phone incase anything goes wrong? I've been trying so hard for months now but I still can't get anything accomplished. I just need someone very experienced to teach me, a person who is almost completely new to all this tinkering and etc. Thank you guys so much!

No need to root to get non-market apps. Go to: Settings > Security > Unknown sources and check 'Allow installation of non-market apps'. However, installing non-market apps can be risky and is NOT recommended.

Ok so I just rooted my phone. Not sure how I can tell I did, but I did. Since I have a Mac, many forums are no use to me. Especially when flashing (p.s. I don't even know what that means) I downloaded the latest Heimdall on my Mac, but I have no idea how it works, or how to get ROMS. What do kernals do because I see those are needed? Also, when I rooted my phone, aren't I able to install non-market apps onto my phone? Because I have a .apk file for the Amazon Market app on my internal SD card but it still doesn't allow me to install it.

Purchase these 2 app's from the market. You will first need to set up a Google account and a Google Pay account.
Mobile Odin
and
SuperUser
You need to root the system before installing SU
My only concern is being able to instal non-market apps. How will I complete this using these two apps? Is there a specific ROM I need to download?

No, installing these 2 items will unlock the phone. It will also make it possible to install a rom whenever you want. Superuser access is what allows you to use the app's you are looking for. You need Odin installed to install superuser.
Also, I bought both of the apps. I couldn't get the update for Superuser Elite, and Mobile ODIN doesn't work because it says it can not find the Mobile ODIN package...

Ok so, I know the best way to be able to install non-market apps is by flashing the rom Cognition, but the download is no where to be found. but before I get the ROM I need Rom Manager right? I got it, but can't use it because I bought it without getting the free version first to get the actual files. Why? because I figured my device isn't rooted. If I were to root the Captivate, I would be able to download the free version. I tried rooting with the One-Click root that I downloaded, which is the only one that I saw on the wiki that actually seemed plausible. It doesn't work. It is supposed to push an update.zip to my SD card and it is there. but when I go into Recovery Mode, the option to choose the Update.zip isn't there. So know I know what I need to do.
1. Find a working rooting program for my mac
2. Get the free version for Rom Manager
3. Find a link and download the Cognition ROM
4. Flash the ROM onto my phone and then I should be able to install APK files from my SD card right?
ugh....

What you need to do is go to the Captivate section of this forum and install Apex 12.5. It has a one click Heimdall package. Put your phone into download mode by holding down both volume buttons and plugging it into the computer. Follow the instructions and you are now running a custom ROM.

@ the OP:
1st of all, why is it SO important to be able to install non-market apps?
2nd, no offense but you don't seem to have the knowledge or skill level you should really have before attempting to root your phone. So...
3rd, do some research & reading. Make sure you fully understand the terminology and procedure for rooting your specifc phone.
4th, have a recovery & rescue plan ready in.case things go wrong. And be willing to accept the consequences.

rooting your device basically means that you now have access to modify your "system" files. e.g. you can now uninstall any system app that you don't like, with a software like es file explorer. There are also tons of useful apps in the market which require your phone to be rooted in order to work properly. Rooting also has other benefits but if you are looking to update your firmware to the latest stock rom, i suggest you look into this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1822109 and follow the instructions. I hope this helps. Cheers and Hit Thanks if i helped you

Did you flash a custom kernel to root your phone?kies doesn't recognise phones with custom roms and kernels...that is maybe the reason why it is showing weird things (3 GB for an update? Weird...)...and there's another explaination...kies requires you to free some internal memory for the update (let me guess, your phone has less than 300 MB left?) if you want to update your software, use ODIN instead and flash one...google about it...it's much faster and stable...
By rooting your phone, means you gained superuser access...you can now modify system files...unlike iphone, rooting is not like jailbreaking...you can install apks without rooting but you must jailbreak to install ipas...next time, do some research first before voiding your warranty...

Step 1: Backing up QPST
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1946915
Step 2: Rooting
There are many methods like:
1. Using the Toolkit (Since you say you're new.. the easier, but longer route would be download a build from sammobile that is supported in Toolkit, and then just using it.
2, via Odin
3. Chainfire's app: Exynos Fix (forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050297)
Step 3: Installing CWM Recovery
Might get stuck with it not sticking, so using the toolkit as above is the easiest bet for all things required
Check the Android Development for 9305 Thread, you'll get all the "How-to"s . Good luck ;-D
I think you made a mistake.....
Step1. Use search function
Step2. Search again
Step3. Read
Step4. Read some more
Step5. Root
If you still don't know what you're doing, go back to iPhone.
How to root a device is mentioned in a million different posts!
Rule 1 of XDA : SEARCH BEFORE POSTING!

Welcome to the forum lol
I suggest this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1979290
That's what I used to install root and CWM (A recovery which allows you to install roms)
Instructions on the program are fairly clear. Just two notes:
-Don't install kies
-Settings --> Developer Options --> under Debugging, tick USB debugging
Have fun! Once you've started rooting and customizing it via Roms, you'll never go back to the device of the sheep.
Being a long-time iphone and new android user, you probably shouldn't root unless really necessary.
Just because you can do it doesn't mean you should. If you don't have a specific reason to root (other than just for the sake of doing it), don't bother with it.
It won't make your phone better, it will only enable you to do more things with it, things you probably don't even know about (Just guessing here).
I suggest you take your time with the phone and when you feel the urge that you need to modify stuff on your phone that can only be done via root, go for it.
I know many iphone users who are at first overwhelmed by android's possibilities even without any rooting.
