In desperate need of help with S2 stock upgrade! - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Xda! I hope you've all had a wonderful christmas eve and an even better new year! I've joined this site after headhunting and reading numerous posts touching different topics regarding one subject and one subject alone: Samsung Galaxy S2.
Now, on to the issue at hand. After tweaking and modifying my firmware, in hopes of getting Cyanogen 7 to run along with the ICS theme for it and having failed, my Sg2 has never been the same, of one simple reason: I haven't found the exact stock firmware that fits my phone. When I write "fits my phone" I actually don't refer to the fact that they aren't working as they indeed are, but no-one that's up to date.
The problem could've been easily fixed if Samsung Kies actually worked with my Windows 7 64-bit, which it doesn't, and please, don't point me in the direction of other posts such as "untick debugging mode", "reinstall Kies", "install those drivers by searching 'this' and 'that' on Google", because trust me, I've tried everything. It worked for a couple of days, but now as I really need it, and want to get out of the hellhole I call "KE2", it doesn't seem to want to help me, at all. "This device is not supported by Kies".
Now, I've visited another thread here on xda, more or less this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 and dabbled myself through numerous versions until I finally settled for XWKE2 - Generic NEE and successfully managed it to run on my phone with Odin.
Since my phone is operator locked and I'm paying for it monthly via a Swedish operator known as Telenor I'm not able to update the firmware via About phone -> Software update either.
As I said, Kies isn't able to update my phone to 2.3.5/ KE7 (or whatever version is the newest) and I'm thusly stuck with XWKE2 & 2.33.
The most major problem I have is that I don't know which firmware to download from the topic I provided above, and I'd really like to know which one to actually download in order to have the most up-to-date version.
I'd immensely appreciate any help!

why dont u flash the EU KK2 ROM with XXKI4 modem ...

Seems that I managed to throw in an update after all by simply connecting it with Kies again. Really strange. The information I'm given is that It's been updated to
PDA:KI4/PHONE:K1/CSC:KH1 (DBT)
I know that there's supposed to be released version where a blue animation detail/shadow appears every time you hit the top or bottom page of a settings window or such, which I'm missing, making me wonder if the version I have is the latest or not.
Can anyone possibly provide such info?

Why would I want to unroot it? It's not rooted, is it? I mean, I had it rooted and then unrooted it, causing the yellow exclamation triangle to disappear. I thought it actually wasn't rooted anymore.
-----------------------
Edit: Just downloaded Root checker and my phone's unrooted.

Shameless bump :C

Use Odin
Your first mistake is using Kies. The only reason to even install Kies is simply to let it install the drivers for your phone. By the way Kies does work on Win 7 64 but you should use Odin anyway. I got tired of all the bugs and malfunctions in various custom roms and came back to stock, Gingerbread DXKL3 (waiting for the stock ICS release in a few months). This rom is available here on XDA both in stock and Frankenstein versions. I use the NEAK kernel on my S2, although the Siyah kernel or the Speedmod K18 kernels are excellent too. So is the Dark Knight kernel with the Chekrom rom. Use a CF-Root kernel first to root, plenty of instructions here (just search) but it does take awhile to learn this stuff.

Have a look HERE for Rom's for your phone.
I have used:
XWKL1
Android 2.3.6
Based on official package
in the UK and it is very stable and great reception (for me)
Have a look HERE, has methods for flashing & Rooted Rom's
Very easy to follow and shows how to remove the yellow triangle
Any questions just ask.
edit:Always use odin for PC flashing (firmware KL1 should work for you)

You might get more help in the Galaxy S2 forum.

[Q] official gingerbread update with kies and status of simlock?

Hello All,
I have one noob question!!.. I have a vodafone galaxy tab (Spain) and I had it unlocked (from simlock). My question is that when the official gingerbread comes out and I update, will I loose the unlock?? (as in the case of iOS devices).
pardon me for my ignorance on android os.
thanks in advanceee
Really!!! Noone here has any idea regarding this!!
I am amazed to see no reply..
Really!!! Noone here has any idea regarding this!!
maybe I need some other forums apart from xda..
I havn't gotten the update yet, however, I'm thinking that if you receive your update on-air from vodafone, then simlock would be reactivated. If you update through kies, there's a good chance that your tab will remain open. Just my opinion. Cheers!
Just to confirm from Italy if kies updated only unlocked tabs and not the ones sold by mobile service providers. Just to know if I should wait for the official release or go the overcome route.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
If you flash an official samsung rom it will stay unlocked. I don't know about a vodafone.
For your second question I'll suggest you to flash with the italian rom, that's what I did with my french tab.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
I've Have my own with vodafone too (unlocked), And I installed the las overcome ROM with gingerbread... It's amazing...
Looking at kies, it says that our tablet can't be upgraded ^^
thanks orion,
I was just being lazy to carefully follow the instructions to flash it myself (fearing to brick it and then post on the Q&A on a bricked tab!!..).
I will try to read the instructions and do it.. can you point out the exact link (as you get a million hits on the subject with google and it becomes hard to choose the right one)
cheers
You'll have to revert back to stock in order to receive an official OTA update. My tab keeps reminding me to update my software but I'm rooted and can't install it. If I do install...it bricks my tab and I have to start all over again using heimdall. Odin to you...
Tbolt meatclaws-talkatap
i.e.. to sum up.. maybe I shall wait a few days/weeks before going the odin route!!

[Q+A]Definitive Guide to GT P1010

So after following all of the forums with any info on this model of tab i noticed a lot of people asking the same questions, seeing as i have been tinkering and following devs progress I thought Id consolidate as much of the Q+A sprawled across the forums into one noob friendly place. So here goes.
What do we know?
Currently the only official roms are worldwide froyo 2.2.2 and EU gingerbread 2.3.6. The GB rom isnt out over the air everywhere yet so if your kies hasnt got the update and your feeling confident then you can pick up a copy from droidangel.blogspot http://droidangel.blogspot.com/2011/05/samsung-galaxy-tab-wifi-p1010-original.html
With detailed instructions here http://droidangel.blogspot.com/2011/05/how-to-flash-upgradeupdate-samsung.html Read, reread and READ AGAIN. It isn't difficult to do as long as you follow the instructions carefully.
Noteworthy info on flashing:
7zip should be used to unrar the downloaded roms as there are issues with other archive managers, the password is samfirmware.com
If you have connection problems with Odin its most likely driver issues its best to uninstall all kies software and drivers, reboot, install latest kies and connect your device, wait for drivers to install and then reboot again,
If you decide you don't like the rom you can flash stock firmware over it to downgrade and continue to get kies updates.
Is it worth doing?
I have been using 2.3.6 now for a few days and have no issues with light to moderate use, I have noticed a better looking interface(just small cosmetic differences) much faster browsing, and my quadrant went from 750 to 1400, If you have had a different experience please post. This update unfortunately doesn't fix the video out problem or the issue with skype using the front facing camera. In my opinion it isn't an update to write home about but it is worth doing.
Can I install it on a different region of tab?
There have been a few people who have successfully installed this rom on tabs from different regions so it is possible, If you have managed to do this please post your region and method As for trying to flash cross region, ask here and ill do my best to help.
As far as I know there are issues with installing on the Korean version due to hardware differences, more on that here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1376440
Can gingerbread for the P1010 be rooted?
Personally I have tried Z4Root, Zergrush and SuperOneClick all of which cant get root yet, Skin1980 is however working on a cf-root kernel here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1386643 which will allow clockworkmod recovery, superuser(root) and busybox, Please note that at the current time if you flash skins cf-root you will have to reflash the entire firmware if you wish to rollback, This will do no harm as long as you read the forums and have an understanding of what your doing.
This is all the useful info I have managed to find so far, hopefully it can help anyone attempting to flash this long awaited upgrade,
A BIG THANKS to all the devs working on this device!! It is much appreciated.
WARNING: Failure to read and understand the instruction can lead to your device being irreversibly damaged, The different galaxy tab firmware comes in different versions according to Country, Region and Carrier providers. It is possible to brick your phone if you flash it with the wrong firmware which doesn't match your device.
You are warned, proceed at your own risk! We are not liable to any problems you have your device. IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUBT IT ISN'T WORTH THE RISK.
GLHF GIEF THANKS!!
Available through kies
Came through my KIES today 21/12/11, I can comfirm that it is the same firmware as on droidangel.blogspot. My location is Northern Ireland UK.

Is it 2.3.6 or 2.3.3?
samfirmware says 2.3.3
Both the samfirmware and kies are 2.3.6 when installed, it must be a typo on sammobile.

[Q][SOLVED] How can i update my branded, rooted "new" Samsung Galaxy S

Hey guys,
sry for that questions.
Today i got a "new" Samsung Galaxy S from my brother, because he has now a iphone.
I never updated his phone and so he has the oldest official firmware on it. I think without lagfixes and other stuff.
I've got a ZTE Blade and i'm used to update ROMs with ClockworkMod, is there a similar application for SGS? Are there any AOSP ROMs (without Samsung GUI) for SGS? Do i have to install all lagfixes before i can update next (un)official roms?
Thanks in advance for your help.
best regards

Read the threads in the development section for custom/AOSP ROMs (be sure to update your SGS to the latest official stock kies version first before flashing the custom ones)
Hey guys, hey pikachu,..
I read the whole last two days, and tried to connect my SGS with the Win7 in a Virtualbox, but thats another story.
I installed kies, connected my phone with the pc, but then KIES wrote, that my phone could not be updated with KIES. I think because its branded.
So, i don't know what todo next? How can i apply a new firmware on my phone or what can i do, that i receive the next updates (e.g. ICS)?
is there a generic firmware for the beginning?
Thanks in advance!
best regards
One way to do apply a new firmware is to flash your device manually via ODIN, the other thing you can do is to make a reg-hack so that KIES thinks your phone is just like a new, unbranded device.
Thanks! Yeah, i read about Odin, but there are so many different versions of odin, a huge amount of different firmwares and, i don't know which of them have a bootloader.. etc.
I try now to apply the registry-hack and if this works then its all ok, otherwise i have to work with odin..
So,.. I'm done
As i wrote before, i tried to update the firmware with the reg-hack-trick, but it didn't work. So i had to test the other way.. with odin
I followed this german instructions (not allowed to post links, but the instructions are on android-hilfe.de) and it worked very well.. (thank god!)
Now i'm looking for a good or perfect Gingerbread (AOSP).. or a way how i can disable the samsung gui
Thanks for your hints!
best regards!

[Q] Galaxy Note Lag/No updates

Dear forum members
In the word of Princess Leia you're my only hope,
I've been losing a lot of sleep over this matter so please don't tell my about how blazingly fast your Note is as every time I read about you lucky bu****s I get a sinking felling at the pit of my stomach.
I appreciate any help you can give.
You'd be forgiven for thinking:
A: This is a repeat thread
B: I'm Trolling if only that were the case
On last count five people in the forum link bellow have the same version & update problem.
Model Number: GT-N7000
Android version: 2.3.6
Baseband version: N7000XXKK5
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-N7000XXKKA-CL726566 [email protected]#2
Build number: GINGERBREAD.XXKKA
I'm not alone in that my version of the sim free Note only appears to update once when first switched on
To quote an older thread which reflects my own situation closely in all but two aspects in that my Galaxy Note lags and mine was bought in the UK
Quote forum (member: turshija)
(I know there are many threads asking the same question, and I've looked through many, but still haven't find an answer to my problems.
Just to clarify, my phone is not rooted, nor flashed, and I'm planning to leave it that way as long as possible, unless I really can't find any other solution for upgrading my phone
As soon as I've powered it on and connected to internet, I've got an update (OTA), which I installed as soon as I got home and plugged the phone to charger. Since then, I haven't got a single update, whenever I manually check I get "No updates!", and Kies says I have latest firmware, but im stuck on KK5 :S)(turshija)
Please note I have edited this quote.

The lag is most noticeable when trying to copy and past as it becomes almost imposable at times stoping then rushing to keep up with my finger.
When on the home screen swiping between windows and the same again in the stock browser can be slow
also when scrolling up and down a web page it gets quite choppy,
At times it can seem normal, while playing a game like asphalt 6 but every now and again the frame rate subtly skips a beat
coming from a single core iPod touch this is noticeably slower.
I have done a the LCD test *#0*# no problems detected
Looking at the RAM as a possible culprit in Options-Applications-Running services it shows that it has 178mb used and 500mb free yet in Task manager under RAM it has 437mb out of 800mb in use?
The question I'm trying to ask:
Is this a permanent situation do I have a faulty Galaxy Note or is it a matter of watch and wait for the ICS update or should I use factory reset?
As my mobile is past the return date, and until now I've never had a need for a warranty on anything from Samsung.
I don't even know how to apply for a Galaxy note Warranty?
************************************************************************************************************************
EDIT: 06/02/12
My Note is afflicted with the screen bug when set on a low light setting switching power saving mode off has had little effect.
When reading a web page or most notably in the stock Mini diary the back round colour changes ever so slightly from one hue to another sometimes taking a slight pinkish or blue colour.
Can anyone with the same Galaxy Note version posted above confirm the same problem?
I hate to break it to you but your phone is rooted, look at the kernel version. You dont need to be rooted just flash the latest stock Samsung Rom. You will not void any warranty and it takes care of the many issues from older roms

root your phone, it's easy and more or less safe if you do it according to instructions, then flash CriskeloRom for example and enjoy smoothness and absolutely no lags on your Note
Flashing doesn't require knowledge about dark magic, just some reading
Android was not designed to actually work out of the box, I mean it;s true potential can be seen after some tweaking

Forgive my ignorance but if I under stand you correctly when you say rooted do you mean to say that my phone has had a custom rom installed possible from a previous owner?
As the phone came to me in what I had a summed was a sealed box and full original retail packaging I even checked on Youtube to confirm this.
My apologies perhaps by rooted you mean it's not a sim free phone as I had originally assumed?

As an EX-Apple owner I find the idea of having to flash my phone as very intimidating.
I don't regret choosing this phone in fact I love it, but if at all possible I'd rather wait and have Samsung fix it for me.
I guess the question now will Samsung get off there behinds and to something, I don't mind waiting if it's just two months away but that might not be the case?

mobile odin is easy to use and safe, no yellow triangle, no increase in flash counter, but to use mobile odin you have to be rooted first
read, there is a lot of good guides in note section, just follow instruction and you will be ok, I got my first android phone in november, flashed first rom 2 weeks later, phone is ok, still working it's really easier than it looks and well there is a lot of benefits, like customs roms and kernels which are tweaked and can bring best in devices.
good luck!
At this time I'm a little sleep deprived but will take your suggestion into consideration thanks indie and iceangel1980

More bugs
In the hope someone is still following this thread I've edited my original post to include the bellow - I hope to avoid posting an unnecessary second thread.
My Note is afflicted with the screen bug when set on a low light setting

When reading a web page or most notably in the stock Mini diary the back round colour changes ever so slightly from one hue to another sometimes taking a slight pinkish or blue colour.

Is there any consense as to whether this is a software or hardware problem in which case I'll need to send this phone back to Samsung.
If your talking about the changing in hue when scrolling up and down, this was fixed in the newer firmware for a lot of people. If it doesn't fix the issue, then you may have a faulty screen. As suggested earlier, flash the latest stock firmware to make sure.
Thanks indie your a hero
Man this phone as much as I love it's overall design, It's quite nerve racking number of bugs for such a premium product.
I just wish Samsung would be more open about these problems:
We know there is this or that problem where working hard to fix it in a future update.
Not the have fun finding out if you have a faulty half a grand phone for the next two years approach.
That's business I guess.
Thanks again for indulging this neurotic thread starter.

The phone is not rooted as I mentioned earlier. You will need to follow the root procedure if you want to root the phone. Otherwise, just use Odin to flash any Samsung stock firmware. Do not flash custom firmware as this will increase your binary counter and void warranty.

[Q] How do I root my Telstra Galaxy Note GT-N7000B?

G'day all.
I've been searching, and I'm unsure on what to use to root my Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000B (Telstra). It's a slightly different model number, and I just want to know is there a way to root the thing and install CWM without bringing up a triangle and increasing the counter? I already purchased MobileOdin btw.

Well I am not sure if anyone has tried an N7000 rom on an N7000B. I didn't want to end up with a shiny new brick, thats why I asked here. I already have done a search and all I got was vague answers. Has anyone successfully flashed/gained root access on an N7000B?

I would also like to know this. My phone is exactly as above (also from telstra au)
...I dont really care about the yellow triangle or counter though(I can sort that out later when there is more support for this model)
I would like to be sure that the process will not brick the phone, this would suck as its only 2 days old .
best if I know that someone else has done it first
thanks.
The n7000b is just a firmware. you can flash another firmware (and it will not brick your phone). the only down side to this is you won't be able to go on the telstra mobile websites, eg. mobile foxtel,
Anyone brave enough to try to root this one?
I just got my note today and would really like root access....
bump
I'm interested in seeing how this goes as well. The itch to root and flash something better than Telstra's rubbish is growing but I am nervous about the process (it seems vastly different to my old Desire).
I find the stock rom not too bad.. GREAT battery life, the only thing I want root for is to record my calls (use it for work).
I have a call recorder installed on my stock Note that doesn't require root. Got it off the market too.
It's called Call Recorder.....

The n7000b is just a firmware. you can flash another firmware (and it will not brick your phone). the only down side to this is you won't be able to go on the telstra mobile websites, eg. mobile foxtel,
Click to collapse
isnt mobile foxtel just an app...
Anyone done this yet?
I tried the call recorder apps off the Market but none seem to record properly, they just use the speaker.
My note originally from Poland (!) bought via UK back in early November (can't believe I've had my wonderful toy for over six months now!) Given that there were very few Notes back then and next to none in Oz, I was very nervous about rooting and flashing - the challenge you are facing today. I spend many days reading nearly all the threads before biting the bullet and doing my first root!
All I can recommend you do is read Dr Ketan's flashing guide very carefully and make sure you have a backup. I've had a few nervous moments with black screen but always been able to recover by rebooting into recovery and restoring a backup. I'm on Telstra and never had a problem with any firmware I've used (I don't using Telstra Foxtel)
I know that the latest version requires you to flash an older version of ROM before you can root, but once done you can remove all the annoying rubbish and use great programs like Titanium backup to backup and restore the apps you want and freeze the CPU hogs!
I hope that helps you - my experience was different and I felt very alone the first few times I flashed (never having done it before) but the forums have been a godsend in helping.
PS I have never used Mobile Odin - I have found that CWM does all I need it to
So if the WiFi freezes on the N7000B, would it use a different WiFi chip or something? I did hear that the N7000B supports 5GHz and 2.4GHz where the N7000 supports 2.4 only. Not sure if this is true
Hi, I've had the n7000B for awhile now. and flashed most of the firmwares from n7000 model with no problems. been on GB, ICS. all spec about these models are the same. but still haven't found out why this is B on our model.
anyway it is safe to flash n7000 on n7000b!
