All,
I am new here and to SmartPhones. I like Captivate because it has low radiation.
I am impressed with the activities I see here and on CyanogenMod. However, these give me cause for concern regarding the energy level required to accomplish them. Linux is good but I am returning to graduate school in the fall so I am concerned regarding the requirement of these phones and OS's. I would appreciate it if some of you could explain why so much work occurs with Android. Is much of this activity born out of the decision of carriers to control OS releases to specific phones? I see this as a major factor presently.
With that said, it does appear Samsung blew it with regard to v2.2 and the Galaxy S phones. I am nearly embarrassed to inform you that I own two Samsung LCD monitors after learning of this negative experience.
Clearly, I void the warranty if I embrace the activities here but this just rationalizes the choice of a refurbished phone!
Please attempt to characterize the time requirement for becoming involved with these Samsung Galaxy phones and Android. I know I am not the type of person to be interested in continually working with my phone to make it better. However, I also know my limited perspective can be biasing reality with this OS and these SmartPhones unnecessarily negative.
Oddly, my wife is considering the Focus because it would give her the MS support she needs with work. Regardless, it does appear we have found a few excellent Internet resources for these choices...I just want to ensure I am not getting in over my head.
Thanks,
Rick
by radiation I assume you mean the head tumors

Hi Rick,
To answer your question - why so much work occurs with Android, I would like to take the liberty of rephrasing the question - why so much work occurs with Android phones? There isnt one correct answer for this.
You are correct in saying that carriers and service providers like to cripple the phone before they hand it over to the consumer. So when you buy the phone you really are not using these wonderful pieces of technology to their fullest extent. Thanks to our developers here at XDA because of whom we can in reality free the phones that we paid much moolah for, so that we maybe able to use all of the fones features that have been designed to work in conjunction with the wonderful Android OS.
Secondly, the reason why so much work goes into the phones and development to improve the functionality of the phone is because that is what Android has been designed for. Consumer can customize the phone to their liking and does not have to get stuck with the proprietary, grid like systems like the ones iphone has. Phone manufacturers, and not just Samsung, obviously design the phones software in such a way so that there is always room for improvement. They bet their dollar on the fact that an average consumer will eventually buy a newer product when its released and marketed in the future. There is always something lacking in the product that is in the market right now and that is where all this work comes into play.
Now, whether you shud buy a samsung captivate or not and what the time requirement is, is totally dependent on what you want to use the phone for and what kind of functionality you would like to get out of it.
From what you said that ur not a person who wud like to spend a lot of time modifying or playing around with your phone, you wud still like the captivate. Samsung Captivate is a very nice phone overall. Its got almost everything that you cud want in a phone. In regards to apps included with the phone, you've got a decent selection along with loads of bloatware.... If there is anything missing you can easily find it on the android market.
If you're expecting that your GPS would work right out of the box, then the answer is, maybe - maybe not. and its not android's fault, its a samsung issue. There are multiple fixes for the GPS that you can find on the forum, that being said, if you plan on utilizing those fixes, like you said not only will you void your warranty but you alone will be venturing into that experiment on your phone and dev will not be responsible for any damage that may or may not happen to your phone. But then again no guts, no glory.
So all in all, if you do end up getting the captivate, i dont think you'll be utterly disappointed, but at the same time i dont think you'll be able to sit back either when you see all these new developments posted here.
Hopefully i helped you a little and if i said too much then i apologize.
I welcome any senior member of the forum to correct me if im wrong and/or make any additions to what ive said above..
happy forumming....
My brother has a Samsung focus. It's buggy as hell, completely counter intuitive, and incomplete. Theres also no apps at all. He has like 3 different crappy youtube apps and sound boards.
And there's no CM7 to one day fix it.
Sent from my Captivate.
anandsamuel,
An excellent response; truly what I was looking for to understand the issues involved regarding Android and SmartPhones. You did not say too much.
I guess I need to start reading so I understand how to root a Captivate!
Rick
Also, that font is irritating to read.

ok lets slow you down there. first android is linux BASED not linux. there is no need to worry about OS/ device compatibility. the most interaction between the phone and PC are just file copying like through a usb thumb drive.
the next part regarding carriers/updates/samsung. you answered yourself, kinda, and backwards. Samsung didnt blow it.
Google android updates as much as any software does - to make things better.
they release to manufacturers so they can make it work with their hardware.
Samsung released on time, BUT TO THE CARRIERS.
the carriers then take what samsung gave them and add their carrier specific settings (APN ect) and applications (bloatware).
ATT blew the update timeline.
Sometimes manufacturers release their finished product as "source code" untouched by carriers.
the long process is necessary in each step to (attempt) to make a perfect software package that will work with each phone/carrier out of the box for the end user. so it is unfair to say "born out of the decision of carriers to control OS releases to specific phones"
XDA works off of source codes and carrier releases to make our custom updates.
Clearly, I void the warranty if I embrace the activities here but this just rationalizes the choice of a refurbished phone!

there are ways to return your phone without them knowing what you did. dont worry too much about your "voided" warranty.
before i felt comfortable flashing I took about 3 days reading my A$$ off! and currently im off on workers comp. so that was 3 FULL days. even then i had issues and mistakes and my phone was out of service a few nights! but that is part of the fun.
you do not need to be the type of person to constantly update your phone to buy it. tens of thousands of people have this phone on stock firmware and it fully works. the extra effort and time that we here at XDA and cyanogenMOD do is more out of fun, and customization. Many would argue function as well, as we do sometimes fix things *better* than google/samsung/carriers. but things willl *usually* still function on stock even if on a basic level.
you only need to put in as much as you want to get out of it
so timeline,
flashing custom roms/themes PROPERLY - under a week
cutting and pasting roms frankenROMS - under a month or 2
creating - vast back knowlege of programming, ect YEAR(S)
regarding wanting to update often, not every update on XDA to your rom is necessary unles it fixes something you didnt have.
Each Android/Carrier update, would be recomended (or the XDA counterpart) as each new android version (not rom) contains the most updates/fixes. so if you were running a 2.2 (custom or stock) rom it WOULD be worth upgrading to 2.3 when available (custom or stock). but you dont NEED to update your custom rom every couple weeks when they put out their minor update on the same base rom (2.2 for eg.)
Oddly, my wife is considering the Focus because it would give her the MS support she needs with work. Regardless, it does appear we have found a few excellent Internet resources for these choices...I just want to ensure I am not getting in over my head.

no comment. best regards
Trusselo,
Excellent, thoughtful response; it helped characterize this activity further for me. My concern is now recognized (and conveyed to others...) as not wanting to be required to become a developer to make my involvement with a SmartPhone constructive. Samsung, Android, XDA looks very good to me. As you mentioned, my reading has begun.
Yes, something is not right with my traditional Comic Sans Serif font here; it seems to compress it horizontally, but my aging eyes typically need this font.
My My..what a Charming Video. It's a pity that I in this First Post case I can't be brief. I feel I must state WHY am here for the best effect later on. I presume there is a sense of community here so I feel it is best to get it all out of the way now in my first post and be done with it. That said I have to applaud you all for being so thorough. Its Very Impressive...though I suppose nothing less should be expected from coders.
Goodday All,
First... Let me introduce myself - I am CrazyOGuy.
While I do what I can to be technical (and I can tout a decent share), over all technology of today is nothing less then science fiction made real. Its... humbling. Just for the sake for putting down the ground work..for me it will be a bit slower and take longer to gather my thoughts and in turn understand all this...*Stuff*. Please ...Mercy upon me with all your infinite wisdom. Work with me and I shall return the effort. So with that said... with this post here I am officially one step closer at trying something completely new to me. For the sake of incite for the wall of text I shall summarize what to expect all this text for; It's for a audiophile and his Music, New Devices and its respective OS, and What I can do with them (Root). I have been very busy in my exhaustive research.
There is a reason for all the text here before the final literal line (information is like that), but if you wish to skip to the main point of this post, I have made it so you can do so and just get to the point.
---------------
As stated Music is a big thing for me, and as such I had for a time something called a Cowon J3. With its BBE enhancements along with other proprietary enhancements, a OLED Screen, Amazing Battery Life , and the ability to play practically every Audio (and Video) file under the sun It was just about everything I could ask for. But then I found I bonus use for it- Just Icing on the cake; I also used it as a portable portfolio of sorts. With its stunning OLED Screen I used it to show video and pictures of things I have made. Then I put it in my pocket and it was my Personal Media Player again. Then - Gone. ( I'm not going to elaborate in that part so please don't ask.) That's what I miss the most. I miss bringing my music with me - but oddly enough what I miss more so is not having my archive of past work at my finger tips. That's what I have been searching for. Sadly the J3 is one of a kind and has just recently discontinued. If it wasn't for the successor being right around the corner (which I have heard October) I would probably get another one and be done with it.
You can change software - But hardware is a bit more permanent - these are the things I think about when I make a "computer based" purchase. But events have forced my hand... I can't wait anymore. So I am now considering what ...I really....REALLY...I mean REALLY! ...Didn't want to consider. Blasted Newfangled Tech. I have yet to interface with an Android OS. I have of course heard about it, but don't really know much because I haven't needed to. I haven't held it in my hand and played with it. I don't know how far I can mod it. How to shape it... help make the device "My Own" (like remove the TouchWiz UI).
So with that said I first looked at tablets and settled on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7. While it doesn't play FLAC out of the Box I hear that there are Android Apps one can get that can make it play .flac and sound better...like Voodoo or Power Amp (thought I would prefer BBE which unfortunately is iOS only for now). It also has a very nice screen. But then in my ever classic fashion of being thorough I said...Ok I like this; Just to make sure let's see If I can find something better. Better in this case means : Smaller, Nice Screen, Plays FLAC default...
Then I found something better. The catch was it was a "Smart Phone" - or as I call them- a REALLY small computer. The Phone in question is the Unlocked Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 ( I know about the chip difference in the Samsung SGH-i717 Galaxy Note LTE).The thing is...I'm not going to use it as "A Phone" because I have a phone. It makes calls and DOESN'T DROP THEM 99.8% of the time. That's all it does. It's all I need it to do. It does a great job at it. I'm happy. There are more reasons...but it would be best not to start the rant. Not going to talk any more about it.
Therefore I want to use the small computer phone as a small computer tablet but with the main purpose of a PMP which happens to have some extra features along with it.
---------------------------------------------------So why am I posting this here? ---------------------------------------------------
The reason I have just submitted this "wall of text" because I am in need of a informed second opinion(s). I know NOTHING about this kind of stuff, so I need to make sure that this Crazy Idea of mine isn't just wrong due to something I may have missed. I have found that no matter HOW GOOD you are (or at least for myself) at researching and gathering data about -whatever- it's never fully done without a subject savvy/aware Human being giving their thoughts on whatever the matter may be. With that said here is what I want to do..."THE PLAN" as it were.
I intend to buy a Unlocked Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 5.3" Android (Unlocked, 850/1900 3G) and use it as the world's smallest Tablet PMP. NO PHONE USE. In regards of its connection to the internet/"Google Play" I intend to use its WLAN Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, DLNA, Wi-Fi Direct & Wi-Fi hotspot abilities when I need to. No Sim Card. I will then proceed in doing what it takes to modify it (though I don't know much about that bit right now which is why I am posting here) and add the appropriate apps to either bring it to -OR- exceed the J3 PMP Sound Quality.
I want to Root...but I have Never done anything like this before and am ignorantly unaware of how these things work (and to a degree the total power of rooting a device). All I really know is that if done incorrectly I get a really expensive paper weight. ( I imagine I will be reading a lot of your wiki...I have already gathered some info from the wiki about the wifi issue)
Is my plan/idea feasible, or will the lack of the sim card cause the wifi to be moot? I have a million questions want to ask like can I turn off the GPS and do things for tablets work with this...phonetablet? All this is in the to make sure I don't waste the cash on false pretenses.
Thank You for your Understanding (particularly if you read all of this post. Bravo!)

Firstly I want to say hello to you!
Yes, you can use galaxy note without SIM card and use it only as a Wi-Fi device. You can root it, customize it, flash ROMs on it, do pretty much whatever you want. You can install different players if you want FLAC funcionality, play store has a lot of music players apss to choose from.
But I want to give you an advice. If you don't want to use it as a phone, if you want a big screened device which plays audio and video, and it's capable of browsing the web etc., then you should really consider NOT to buy Galaxy Note!
Instead you can get Galaxy player with 5' screen! It has a slower processor and a screen with lower resolution but it is far more cheaper and perfect for your needs.
Power Amp has great sound quality in my opinion and it has built in EQ so you can adjust it just the way you like it!

Woah! - you quoted the entire thing. The Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 is nice and if I was just doing thing on simply a music stand point I would be absolutely agree.
But since I the Samsung Galaxy Note N7000 has a Wacom Pen in it, for me it opens up possibilities in the event I use Adobes mobile apps. In the event I am showing off things visual in nature the nicer OLED based screen is a good idea. Also its since its supposed to be a phone its smaller than the smallest average tablet...making it abit more pocketable (thought I know it's pretty big for a phone).
I don't mind putting down money If I can make the most out of it...make it worth the investment (which with the database of this place I intend to do).
Besides If I for some reason wanted it to be a phone I would likely have gone with the LTE vers. which is slower and more expensive. That's the logic I'm telling myself any way.
I don't know what some of the things you mentioned are...but I guess that gives me something to look up later on.
Thank You.
The note is definitely quite a step up from your old j3 . (never heard of Cowan or j3 before )
I googled a bit and found that j3 had good battery backup so if you are planning to replace that with a galaxy note you should also be aware that this phone is really powerful and it chugs up the battery like crazy.
So if you plan to go all out editing multimedia, streaming videos,dlna,wifi....it won't last that long.
I am not discouraging you from getting the note, cuz other than this issue you will absolutely love the note.

I'm not surprised at all. It's a very audiophile centric device. If it wasn't for its (or should I say Cowons reputation) for Legendary sound quality and Great Battery life they probably wouldn't exist anymore. Everything else Cowon does is...seemingly erratic and odd. They only just recently shipped their first android device with 2.3 Gingerbread, which was one of a few reasons I found was odd enough to look other places. And so... I am here.

Yes that is something I am currently looking into. It's the one thing that I'm unsure about. As quoted from your wiki (and I Samsungs website) when on Stand-By the Battery lasts Up to 960 h (2G) / Up to 820 h (3G) and during Talk time (which I'm going to presume it means use of the respective connections): Up to 26 h 10 min (2G) / Up to 13 h 30 min (3G). The thing is I won't be using 2 or 3 G. Just Wi-Fi. So I'm thinking that If I can disable things that I'm not going to use at all I can boot the Battery time up for a few extra minutes. I also need to see if I can disable the GPS because I'm not going to really use it since the only reason I would have Wi-Fi on is to Upgrade or Download an app, even then I presume I could just connect the Note to a computer and get the same thing done that way. All this is presuming that I can do these things.
The main power drain for my expected uses would be from the screen and this amazing Exynos chipset I keep reading about. Otherwise Ill just turn the screen off and listen to my music.
-----------------------------
Edit:Well I have been peruseing this forum I have noted some things. There is no dedicated post for newer individuals... fortunately I found a video about What a Root is (which I essentially knew already). I see all this talk about Roms and can't help but feel a little overwhelmed. There are so MANY of them...whatever they are. I also keep reading about USBs and SD cards - Kernels and Flashing. I have looked at the wiki but I find my self still not comprehending what all this is about. Sense its my intent to mod the Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 to my likeing- I think it would be a good idea if I understood what I would be getting into before I jump in. I must be crazy - Looking before I leap!? Absurd!
Since I presume that when/If I root I am saying "So long" to the warranty, does this mean I can't get a Samsung Account? Ive looked around and I can't seem to find a Download to Odin - which I currently think is required to root the Sam-Note. I'm not complaining, but I have to say there is just so much here. The hardest part is figuring out the right question to search.
I apologize for the bump, but I have a few more questions before my use of this thread I have created is complete. I also apologize for the...link format. Its the spam filter...I'm still new apparently. Go figure. Ill presume you all will know what needs to be filled in.
The Questions:
Does anyone have a recommendations on where I should buy the Unlocked SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE/GT-N7000 Note? I just want to know the options I may have other than Amazon, Ebay, or Expansys.
Will [".youtube.com/watch?src_vid=cJjh6gi0Spw&feature=iv&annotation_id=annotation_802229&v=ehXcnqntsro"]THIS root method work with 4.0 Ice-cream Sandwich? Is there currently anything here that won't work/isn't stable with said Android OS version?
Will Adobes Apps ([".adobe.com/products/photoshop-touch/tech-specs.html"]Photoshop Touch for example) work on the SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE/GT-N7000? I ask this because said app is made for a tablet...but the GALAXY NOTE isn't your average tablet since it's a phone? It meets the resolution requirements... just not the size. Hence the confusion. This kind of thing is actually my biggest query at the moment...perhaps I should broaden the question...If it is made for a standard tablet, will it work with this sort of tablet?
Will Rooting make my phone more susceptible to being Hijacked/Hacked /Virus?..so on. I presume its no, but security is nothing to play with. Does McAfee have an App? (That was a joke)
Once I have rooted- is there any way for ME to customize the UI and how the hardware (such as GPS and Ram) functions. As you may have gathered I know my away around Adobe Suite and I could at the very least do some of that... or do I just have to...ugh...what's the jargon word...
Flash the Rom with someone else's handy work?
I also have a VooDoo Music App based compatibility question but I'll just ask in its respective thread later on.

You all (well most) have been very helpful. I know the main purpose of this site is Modding Android (or at least the phones they come on) , and not to play 20 questions with the noob who doesn't even have the device yet! So - Thank you for your understanding. It is greatly appreciated.
Hey Guys Kyuubi10 here again.
I had a thought on my head and couldn't help but share to see if people have the same views as me.
I am currently disappointed with phones, tablets and computers...both on a hardware level and on a software level.
While I do see technology getting better each year I have a feeling that we are currently stuck in a cycle which the major companies are unwilling to break.
Let me go deeper into detail. But to make this thought comprehensive to most people I'll try to organise it by topic.
Software:
Most developers nowadays have a huge disregard for code efficiency, and as such the advancement into making code more efficient has slowed almost to a halt. Because our devices are becoming each day more powerful, developers don't care anymore about creating applications which don't consume RAM, nor applications which are bug-free on release.
Instead buggy applications are released, which consume loads of RAM, because a future update will fix bugs, and devices will get better and have more RAM.
Thus new and inexperienced developers are not being taught the value in making an efficient program.
And this annoys me.
This brings me to Java, and Android. While I love android and what it stands for, the fact that it still runs mostly on Java annoys me. Java being hated by most developers, and being seen as a backward step in the development world is one of the major programming languages in today's world.
Google, being a great company should set up an institution made to further programming standards, and through such institution it should begin laying the foundations for a new programming language to be used with Android.and it's focus should be efficiency.
Also, highly disappointed in the progress of Windows 10. Mentioned to be a revolutionary step for Windows....yet it is simply a reworked GUI for Windows 8. It still even has the charms!!! All that was done was to make Windows store apps open within windows rather than fullscreen, and fixed a couple bugs. Oh yeh, and Cortana...which seems more like a spy than a virtual assistant. It actually refuses to work unless you let it monitor your location. Why does it need so much info?
Microsoft Edge feels like a beta testing version. I thought that they would at least incorporate some Internet Explorer functionality to Edge. But it is not even recognized as a browser by certain websites. At this moment in time IE is still better than the "revolutionary" Edge.
You are still better off with Firefox or Chrome.
On the Linux side of things...it still annoys me that there is very little support for Linux. But that has enough complaints on the internet to make its own case, I'll avoid repeating everything all over again.
Instead I'll make a complaint about Android. Why is almost no-one building an android port which works well as a desktop OS?
Why are we still limited between OSX, Windows and Linux (which has little support)?
Android has been around long enough...but very few people are making an effort in creating a fully functional version of android for desktop.
The way I see it is that Android is based on Linux...it should contribute back to the Linux community. Someone should use a well established Linux distro and mix it with Android. If their runtimes are incompatible then a technology such as CoLinux or UML could be used to run both at the same time. While also using KSM to keep RAM consumption to a minimum.
This could be well supported by Google (Now Alphabet), and the community.
Hardware:
While the development of CPUs is going strong, with Intel, Nvidia, Qualcomm and MediaTek trying to best each other...Other things aren't doing quite as well. Especially RAM. This mostly being the fault of OEMs, trying to keep costs as low as possible while squeezing every cent from their customers.
This is highly noticeable when you get Tablets which are up to 4x bigger than a phone and have the same amount of RAM as a phone. This kills multitasking abilities in our modern day devices.
We already have 64-bit CPU chips...why isn't it yet common for our devices to have 4GB+ of RAM? Asus showed that it's possible with its Zenfone 2.
How long will it take other OEMs to follow suit? The progress in this area has been too slow over the years.
Again, especially for tablets. Those things should have been reaching 6GB or more within 2014 and 2015. We definitely have the technology to do it.
While for desktop and laptops I'd love to see qualcomm and Nvidia to step up into this market with their ARM based chips.
It would be interesting to see a mix of Dedicated graphics interacting with an ARM CPU...I wonder if that is possible.
But the advantages of ARM chips are undeniable...They have even started to appear into the server market, and yet nothing for personal PCs. This is sad. The battery reduction, heat reduction achieved by such chips would make computers so much more powerful. But advances in this area are also moving foward too slowly even though we already have the technology to do it.
Security
But this annoys me most of all. The lack of focus about security.
While technology increases, it seems that no one is worrying about the security of new devices etc...
I mean, if someone stole my smartwatch all they would have to do is reset it and they could connect it to their smartphone as if I had never owned it.
That breaks my heart.
How hard is it to create a pair of symmetrical encryption keys, or 2 pairs of asymmetrical ones (if you want to be paranoid), in order to make sure that the smartwatch works only with that specific smartphone which has the correct keys.
This would also mean that if the owner wanted to use a second device to connect to their smartwatch it would be fine and safe as long as they have the correct keys. Thus improve functionality and safety with one blow.
With a whole load of smart devices being offered currently and very few of them have any security whatsoever! It annoys me deeply.
Obviously there are other security issues all of which have already been extensively discussed, such as encryption while surfing the web as default, efficiency of current standards etc...
As a solution I believe that the major tech companies in the world should get together and make a consortium with the purpose of advancing technology.
The idea is that once a new technology/protocol/standard is introduced by one of these companies then the others test it extensively, and if it is found to improve current technology they all adopt it. Because the main issue is that while many solutions exist, they are not wide spread because most companies don't use these solutions.
But if the most significant companies in the tech industry lead the way by using the new technologies, then by default the other smaller companies will follow.
But such a consortium needs to exist in order to avoid useless competition.
Competition is good when it is a force to improve current standards, not when it isolates another company's improvements by rejecting their solutions.
I agree with most of your points but I have to disagree in regards to Windows 10. As Microsoft explained it will be continuously improved. I think with Win 10 they finally listen to its customers (more than 90% satisfied). In my opinion 10 is far, faaar better then 8 and I think its developing is going into the right direction.
As this is about more than smartphones... And not about anything in specific... I'm moving this to the off topic section. :good:

True, you bring a good point. But this comes back to what I said that developers now are not worried about bringing a great product into the market, they bring an unfinished project which will then be updated as time goes on.
In fact what people are happy about Windows 10 is more due to the GUI changes. (No full screen apps, start button is back where it belongs.)
While my complaint comes more from the fact that they took a really long time to build Windows 10, and it still is Windows 8 with a different GUI. Which makes me think, what did they do with the huge time they took developing it?
Personally, I liked Windows 8... Yes it had its flaws, but it was revolutionary. It was magnitudes faster than Windows 7, albeit it had many glitches. But those were ironed out with 8.1.
It was Microsoft's first attempt at merging their mobile OS to their Desktop one. And to me this was a great idea, and improvement.
Windows 10 on the other hand doesn't feel as revolutionary as they claimed, from a technical perspective. Yes from a business perspective, it is something new, but not the software itself.
Can you see my argument?
But you are right, and I agree with you in the fact that it is moving in the right direction. I hope that Microsoft's push to mix a mobile OS and a desktop OS will inspire Google to do the same to its Android OS.
Chrome OS just doesn't truly feel like a proper OS.
It might sound ridiculous, but let me and my development team (my close relatives which do have their down work) begin our biggest project yet - porting Touchwiz Camera for AOSP ROMS (or at least every feature which are available on stock Touchwiz). Our goal is simple - bring glorious Touchwiz camera and it's bells and whistles to AOSP ROMs, let it be Lineage or Resurrection Remix, it doesn't matter. We began our development and we will consider using Magisk as an option of getting this to work.
Be aware, that this project might never come to life (trust me, if developers couldn't bring all of our camera features to AOSP, then it's obvious how difficult it is to accomplish this). It might even require to edit the entire AOSP for this to work.
As everyone know, Touchwiz camera is closely related to Touchwiz framework, so as a consequence it closely relies on that code written. AOSP has a completely different CameraHAL for making camera even to work. So, yeah. OnePlus One has something similar already accomplished, so our goal is exactly the same.
All of the development progress will be posted here.
And please note, that this is our hobby job, not a full-time job, so when there is free time to spare, we'll spend it doing this crazy project to work and move forward.

Wait for it. Good luck!
Glad to hear this. Hope you can get it figured out.
I'm so glad to know that! :victory: PATIENCE and HOPE! :good:
Best of luck to ya!
Good luck guys!
Amazing!
Good luck! Hoping you can make it
Good luck guys!!! I have been waiting for such great developers!!! If you'll do it you'll sign a mile Stone, it will be part of the developing history!
I wish you all the best
Thanks for all your great words!
On the flip side, we had many difficulties, starting from bootloop issues to camera stop working even with stock ROM. We are still doing some progress. Logcats and tons of trials and errors helped us out. Moving slowly forward.
Sorry for being off quite recently. Busy working and doing personal stuff.
Progress update:
Nougat is an utter a**. Not only it would be next to impossible to make video recording work (photo capturing is a much easier job), it would take years to make it work. We are searching for some counter measures now. Looks like horrible roadmap is coming up next to our door. We are prepared.
Reserve engineering is as prominent as my need to eat. I know it does not make much sense, but I think you get the idea. Thanks for the support you all.

Sent from my SM-G900F that scored 73.844 in AnTuTu with No Limits 6.1 ROM. . .
Are you reverse engineering with IDA? there was a developer working on the s6 I think it was who reverse engineered and found many factory variables that were called on during certain camera processes and managed to implement them into the camera wrapper in a "dirty" fashion that wouldn't get approved to be official. It did seem though he improved the camera a lot by using factory light sensing and focusing calls he found from the reverse engineering. Id bet our s5 uses many of those same functions and names, i'll see if I can dig that thread it. It was shared in the lineage 14.1 thread.
Wow this is a amazing info
The bad camera in resurrectionremix is the only part, why I don't use this awesome rom on my S7.
Take your time and hopefully you rock it

Yeah, reserve engineering is our only way out. It's not possible to achieve anything in a simple fashion. I would definitely call this project a win if we at least succeed making 1080p60 to work properly, other things like fast focusing and other things might come as well, since the dynamic range on LOS completely sucks. Pictures look dead.
BTW, if what you are saying about S6 is correct, our job might become a lot easier. I believe S6 has a different camera sensor calibration from the get-go, even if the sensor is identical (minus the OIS). If those variables are accessible to us, we might get some incredible results. Of course, with a lot of patience.
And for your own convenience, I won't ask for any donations. Why? My words speak for themselves. I don't want to rob your money. And as plus, I would lose my confidence.
Wishing u and ur team the best of luck with this project fingers crossed
Im so tired to read all the comment about bad things about this phone , i mean i personally doesnt habe the perfect phone , i came with some problems too but then i realize u will NEVER find this phone good enough when you only looking for it mistakes . Dude u should be happy own this phone , since the others can only dream for it . No phone is perfect ? You think iphone is better ? Or any other brand ? Well please use the others , and im sure you will do the same , you will found that all phones have their own problem , probably to make the phone perfect for you , you just have to accept what it is and be happy with it . Or buy a new phone that you consider better , and lets see did u complain too or no .
imo phone will get better in updates
As with everything else from phones to cars you'll only find people posting about the faults, you never get people posting about the good things. That's fine though.
Get better with updates?
You're in for some surprises.
Like a bad gf updates just keep giving
Well, tbh there's no such thing as perfect in this universe. Everything has flaws, flaws that make it unique.
Considering a phone, i believe, mobile companies tend to provide us with best of their hardware, however they do still lack behind when it comes to software. It may be appealing but it always lack certain features, tweaks, mods.
That is where custom roms comes in place.
We have Resurrection Remix - tweaking at it's extreme.
We have Lineage OS - stability at it's extreme.
For me, my perfect phone would be the flagship phone with a custom rom. What else you want huh? Consider Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G with Ressurection Remix, regardless of the fact that it has such a huge name XD.
I have bad delayed notification problems with my S21 Ultra.

Try disabling -all- power management... destroyer of worlds
Developer options>standby apps, all buckets should show as active otherwise power management is active.
Be careful what apps you limit background data to and -don't- allow background battery usage as well.
It's most likely a settings misconfiguration... play with it.
I share the same feelings with this post. I think that moaning without really looking for any solution is useless.

Yea for sure... Only sadly the cameras wouldn't function at their max potential... Which kinda makes the mentioned roms unnecessary. :/

Yea. You are right. They should import the stock camera apps in those roms for that to work.

Keep playing with it. Took me close to a year to fully sort out my Note 10+.
It runs extremely well now.
I have the perfect smartphone!
Does it have an SD card slot?
Yes!
Is it micro-SD format?
Yes
Does it support up to 1TB of SD memory?
Yes!
Does it support UFS 3.1?
Yes!
Is the SD slot on the bottom of the phone?
Yes! ... ?
Can the SD card be inserted face down?
No...? Why?
Doesn't sound perfect to me. My last phone before my last phone allowed you to insert the SD card upside down!
It's not the phones or the manufacturers, it's us!
Hi guys! I'm a new user of s21 Ultra. My last Android phone was LG G2.
I am using the Snapdragon version. The stock camera, the image it produce has too much contrast and doesn't seem natural to me. I am a hobbyist photographer so I could say what is good or what. And it isn't for me.
My version is up to date. All software update installed. Am i missing something here or it is what it is?

Check your display settings>screen mode.
Not sure what your options are but the "natural" setting produces truer rendering.
The vivid mode looks way oversaturated.
You may have more options in Developer options but probably not.

Hello, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, i am only using the "Natural" option. There is just too much noise on the image even though there is enough light not to force the phone to use high ISO.

Try resetting camera data and clearing system cache.
Any case or cover that could be interfering?
Otherwise it may be a firmware or hardware issue.
SOLUTION TO DELAYED-NOTIFICATIONS:
Enable USB debugging on the phone.
You just unzip the file provided here in your PC: https://www.xda-developers.com/install-adb-windows-macos-linux/
Navigate to it via terminal.
Then, after you connect the phone to your PC, run:
./adb devices
./adb shell dumpsys deviceidle disable
That'll fix it for sure.
I simply cannot recommend Android to my normie friends and family.
Let me restate this: It is not our job to fix Google's bugs.
This is a US-centric view.
If you can't tell: I am a bit aggravated right now.
I could not get my GMail, GCal, and other notifications to come through properly on Pixel 5's Android 11 OR S21 Ultra's Android 11.
This has apparently been an issue that many an Android user suffers through silently -- and, some don't even know that this is happening to them. I guess they're embarrassed to publicly state that their mobile OS is subpar.
When you get an e-mail or if a calendar event reminder is coming up, and even if your phone's screen is OFF/locked: you should get an *instant* notification. No delay whatsoever.
Well, if my screen was off/locked, I wouldn't get these notifications or it would take 10+ minutes to show. But, once I unlocked my phone: boom, notifications. And, sometimes even if my screen wasn't locked, there would be a serious delay or no notification.
After spending loads of time trying to fix this problem, me and my friend finally stumbled upon a solution: ./adb shell dumpsys deviceidle disable
A reboot eliminates this setting modification, by the way.
Do not tell me that instant e-mail notifications are not necessary. Many of us work jobs that require them to be instant.
No end user should ever have to go through this. iPhone users certainly don't go through this.
If Google doesn't care about Android users, then, why should I, as an Android user, care about Android too? Just switch to iPhone, I guess.
Google pays Apple $10bn+ every year and makes better software for iOS than it does for Android.
Just look at the damn widgets that iOS users get.
So, $10bn/year plus the cost of the software developed to cater to iOS users.
This makes Google a simp cuck to Apple, nothing else.
Would Apple ever return this favor? No.
Therefore, Google management is a simp cucked by Apple, nothing more.
We are fools to be using this OS.
If Google is willing to subsidize my iOS software updates and experience to the tune of billions of dollars every single year -- then, why not just switch?
Clearly, my experience has shown me that Android can be cheaper -- if I don't value my time.
Statistic after statistic bears it out: iPhone users are wealthier.
I am tired of being an Android luser -- why should I take on such abuse and neglect by the main author of my mobile OS?
Before you start patronizing me: YES, I tried every other bloody trick in the book to fix this issue.
No end user should ever have to go through this! No end user should have to run adb commands to enable basic functionality.
There are some basic things that modern smartphones should just be able to do: instant notifications, 3rd party camera support, functioning RCS or some other form of E2EE messaging built-in, reliable local backups, a nationwide network of repair facilities, etc.
Android fails on all of these.
iPhone ordered. Glad to leave this Android ghetto behind.
Hey Google, if you have some self-respect: then, instead of paying Apple $10bn an year and doing iOS development, how about you actually work on some basic Android functionality instead?

Wish you all the best, and a happy life with your new iPhone. Life is short and there's no point putting up with what you hate.
I can see you're really upset about a lot of stuff on Android. You do make some very valid points about what's broken in Android. And I guess any of those can trigger a person ebough to make them switch to iOS. But I think it also has something to do with the user's requirement and not the OS alone. If there was just one "best" OS, nobody would spend more than a thousand dollars on an alternative. It's good to have a choice, and in your case, I'm glad you've exercised that in favor of what you think with add more value to your life.
I've had both iPhones and Android phones for years and both of them offer 90% of the same functions that you'd expect from a good smartphone. The remaining 10% is where you have to make a choice. There are many things to choose from: stability vs experimental features, customisation vs familiarity, update cycle, longevity, resale value, tinker-ability (I know that's not a word ), app support (there are some apps that only support one or the other OS), and the list goes on.
My childhood friend and me bought matching MacBook Pros when we jumped ship into the Apple ecosystem with an iPhone and an iPad. We were "sick" of android, and wanted a taste of the premium life that the fruit promised to offer. Five years on, he still uses all his Apple gadgets and has added a homepod, an apple watch and airpods to his growing apple inventory, whilst upgrading the the latest idevices every two years. Me on the other hand, went from MacOS to a bootcamped Windows installation after a year of purchase and don't even boot into MacOS unless I have to use Final Cut Pro. My workflow goes best with Windows, no matter how good MacOS may be. On the other hand, his doesn't - he's completely iin love with the Apple way, and that's fine.
Same with iOS. I kept the iPhone for 2 years before trading it in for a OnePlus because I hated being told that there was a "correct" way of doing something and only that way was allowed. I couldn't live with an OS that denied me access to my device's filesystem! That, in my opinion is a basic requirement - but this may not be the case for everyone. I like a robust notification system and I've found the Android implementation head and shoulders above what Apple offers. I like third party app stores and the ability to sideload apps on my phone. I can't get that on iOS. And the best part - if I don't like something on Android, it's possible I can fix it with some workaround (like the one you posted). I agree with you that no end user should have to do that, but regardless, it can be done if you want to. No such possibility exists on the other side of the fence. So I chose to live with the shortcomings of Android as opposed to the shortcomings of iOS - simply becasuse the former were more acceptable to me than the latter, not because Android is better or worse that iOS. It just offers me what "I" want in a mobile operating system.
It may be the opposite in the next person's case - someone who values the other side of the equation more, like yourself. That's why it's good to have a choice.
But i sincerely believe that it's not so bad on the Android side of things. It is a very versatile and stable operating system offering a lot of flexibility and customisability on par with a full fleged desktop class operating system. In the end, it boils down to a blend of the OS and the user, not either one in isolation.
I wish you the best with your new device. They are arguably beautiful pieces of technology. Have fun!
Hope to see you back on XDA in the future.
