I am an Evo 4G owner and love it .. I'm now in the market for a tablet. Is it better to get a honeycomb tablet or go with the Galaxy Tab and root it? I ask because I would really like to stay with Sprint but the Xoom is coming wi-fi only next week on Sprint. Looking for a little guidance here. Also, can I make video calls with the Galaxy Tab? Thanks Android fam!
Tricky question really....
The Galaxy Tab is a 7" device whereas the various Honeycomb Tablets that are appearing are all 10.1" devices. Is size a factor for you ?
The Galaxy Tab can be used as a phone (in the US you will need to root and modify it). I have been using my Tab as my only phone for 5 months now and can't imagine going back to using a 'regular' sized phone because the screens all look tiny to me now
A friend that works at Samsung told me that the new 10.1" and 8.9" Galaxy Tabs that are coming out soon will both be capable of making calls (again probably disabled in the US models).
I've played with an Acer Iconia 500 - 10.1" tablet running Honeycomb and it was a great experience, however its too big to carry everywhere and it doesn't have phone capability so it doesn't fit my needs.
So the question is how are you going to use it ? If you want something to sit at home then go for the new larger sized tablets, if you want something mobile to have with you all the time then the original 7" Galaxy Tab is the best option (especially if you get rid of your phone and use the tab instead).
Sean
Honestly, go for latest firmware. Many machine are already available with Honeycomb 3.0 so it would be wise to get the latest. Also, most of the machines running 3.0 come with dual core processor. That's my opinion.
Thanks for the info guys. My Evo is great and I am looking for a tablet to use more as a replacement for my laptop while on the move ... although using the galaxy tab for a phone does sound pretty good .. size wise, it sounds a little strange to use a tablet for a phone but I haven't went that way so I don't know ... I want to use it at home and on the go .. carrying a laptop everywhere has its advantages and disadvantages but the new tablets are going to be wifi only and that kind of defeats the purpose for me ... can the galaxy tab be rooted and used on 4G and are there roms that have honeycomb? Thanks for helping me out!
any other opinion or options?
If size dosen't matter for you then take a honeycomb tablet (iconia a500, asus transformer, galaxy tab 10.1...). Personnaly I like my galaxy tab 7, because of all the reasons listed by seanchk above.

I use my SGT 7" as a phone + tablet too, for the same reasons as above. Fair warning, the phone function works in speakerphone as a default unless you use the wired headset included in the package or buy a bluetooth headset which I do use.
~ A little thanks goes a looong way! ~
A 10" tablet to me is almost equivalent to the portability of a notebook for me. I have an ipad 2 (which my wife uses mostly now), and carrying it around was a hassle.
The tab is the perfect size because you can put it in your back pocket or your average jacket pocket. It's also nice to be able to hold it with one hand for an extended period without getting sore. The ipad 2 is a great device for using in bed but if I'm out and about, the galaxy tab is a lot more practical.

grukko, thanks for the input. I have been told that if I have an evo, I shouldn't bother with an android tablet. how do you feel on that comment? also, mobility is huge for me as this will be mainly used for on the go to replace having to carry a laptop everywhere. i am just wondering if the 10 inchers coming out on wifi only are going to be worth not having a 3G/4G connection.
also, I will be keeping my evo as I need a phone with unlimited minutes for business. i live in the US. just want to be happy and comfortable with my purchase.
Taking size out of the equation, which phone would you rather upgrade to and why?
Galaxy Note (NEED US T-Mobile)
or
Galaxy S3
Go.
I have both.. Lol switch em out like every other day.. S3 more pocket friendly. They both seem the same to me. Other than s voice and stylus.. Lol but overall prefer my note use it for school and as a planner

I have both too. I originally upgraded from the S2 to the S3 and felt I was hoodwinked with the lack of UMS support. The Note does everything the S3 can do and more. Also it comes with the stylus and larger screen.
Had Samsung not gone full retard with MTP on the S3 and taken the Notes approach with MTP and UMS I would have stayed with my S3 - happily. YOU NEVER GO FULL RETARD!
If you have the choice, I say Note.
MTP? UMS?
I had the same question, decided on the note as it does more and have read many post of people cracking their s3 screen very easily.

Lack of UMS support is a stupid decision that Samsung decided to go with in the S3 in hopes of trying to be more like the iphone [/Metallica~sadbuttrue]
I traded my S3 for an Tmo Note and I really like the Note. I wanted a bigger screen was the only real reason I did it. It is basically the same phone otherwise. One thing that stood out almost immediately was the snappiness of the S3 is not present on the Note. I attribute that to the fact that my S3 always had upwards of 600mb of free ram whereas my Note is sitting around 215mb or so. This was on TW stock Roms on both phones. I also miss my notification LED on the S3. just my .02 cents

Yes I know that. That's what I was trying to say but in much more words
Or do you just consider it a gimmick like 3d?
I have an Evo 3d now, thinking about upgrading to a Note II. I don't really care for Touchwiz, and would rather have AOSP, but after thinking about it, I'm really concerned about paying $700 for a device, and using none of the features except the large screen, similar to how I've almost never used the 3d on my current phone.
Advice?
I use it mainly on the S memo widgets to scribble myself reminders etc. and occasionally as notations on images and maps.

To be honest i bought Note with the idea to use the s pen to draw allot and wrote notes.
But i found that you write, the screen is too small, and to draw, the screen has a known bug in Note 1and Note 2 which makes the drawable area only around 4.7inches more or less. .i.e.the s pen flows haywire some near the corners of the screen...
So, as a big supporter of s pen initially i would say it is definitely a gimmick.
Also,
Touch wiz is significantly slower than AOSP even on jelly bean...
Combined r with the half-year late updates, and you liking aosp more, is say go for nexus 4 instead unless you like support AMOLED and bigger screen

Well, what made you get the Note 1? Had you planned on using the stylus before you bought it?

I really want to, but I've been afraid of the dismal storage and battery life. I am on Sprint and I have around 25 gigs of music I carry because I have been unable to rely on the cloud. When I buy my next device, it will be unlocked for use on T Mobile. Obviously it would be impossible to beat a deal like the Nexus 4 in the unlocked department on price, and perhaps T Mobile's network won't let me down for streaming through Play Music. Either that, or I might take up finally carrying around a PMP.
I had also thought, perhaps erroneously, that being released with mega specs and JB would be enough to overthrow the lag. I guess you are expecting it anyway?
Never used it when on the factory Os and Touch whiz UI that came the S-apps.
use it infrequently now that I am on cyanogen 10.
from GT-N7000 on CM10
Nevermind, already found videos showcasing lag from an overabundance of Touchwiz features on Sprint.

Initially, the selling point was the screen size and the stylus but after buying the phone and putting an aosp Rom on it, i didn't use the stylus but the added features available with the stylus in the jelly bean leak has my using the stylus a lot more.

It's not something you use all the time but for specific things it's very useful. Things I've used it for recently:
- drawing a number of possible logos and sending them via mail
- Google maps measure feature; much more accurate to select measure points than a finger
- use as a pen for crossword puzzles on screen
- kids drawing to keep them amused while out
- sending location of my parked car to wife with big arrow showing where it was left
So nothing you couldn't do anyway but much easier and more accurately with the S Pen.
Cheers

I am just plopping down this question because I wanted a more precise opinion between the devices:
1. GALAXY NOTE 4
2. SAMSUNG NOTE 10.1 (2014) Tablet
3. SAMSUNG NOTE PRO 12.1 tablet
---
Basically, I am more concerned about the S PEN.
I use the Note 4's s pen on a regular basis writing my journals and taking notes on many occasion's. You can say that the S pen has become an integral part of my daily writing routine.
I also enjoy making some art on the side and the Note 4 served great so far, but now I am turning my eyes back to the 2014 Note 10.1 tablet.
Can someone give me an opinion on how the S PEN is like on the note 10.1 tablet or note pro 12.1 in terms of writing (i hand write on the note 4, i rarely print) and drawing (fine lining, using different tools).
I am only concerned due to pressure sensitivities of the s Pen's (it seems like the note 4 is the newest, therefore, the most advanced out of them all?)
(I had a note 3 that had difficulty registering handwriting in a more fluid manner)
Thanks for any input or insight into this!
So I have a Note 12.2. It's not as easy to use the sPen on it. The tablet is huge, so holding it in one hand and wiring in the other isn't a great option. However if I have it in a stand, or sitting flay on a table it is great.
For the most part I use the tablet with keyboard and mouse as a remote access to my virtual desktop for work.

I have be the note 4 and 10.1. Both s pens are great. I use them both equally and don't see a difference
I also have a Note 10.1 (P607T but flashed xKat ROM for the P605 which is entirely compatible). I really like this tablet. If I were to describe it in a word, it would be: underrated. I actually prefer to write with the S-pen on it vs. my N4. At it's size, I find it quite a bit more comfortable to write on. On the Note 4, I sometimes feel a bit "cramped" writing and notice FAR more instances where I'm trying to "squeeze in" the end of a word whereas on the 10.1, writing feels much more natural and like I'm just writing on a sheet of paper. Also if you were wondering I find it to be pretty impressive write accurate word recognition, even when writing a bit sloppier than usual Between the Note 10.1 and the Pro though, I'd personally get whichever was the better deal. However, if you're leaning towards the Pro 12.1 and it significantly more expensive, my advice would be that you'd likely be happier with the 10.1 and a fatter wad of cash in your pocket :good:
I guess I need to use a custom rom on my Note 10.1 [2014] because using the S Pen is terrible. I have to wait for the display to catch up to what I wrote.
I have the older 10.1 (GT-N8013), Note 2 and Note 4. While the 10.1 is eaisier to write on due to the size of it, the Note 4 s-pen seems much better at capturing handwriting.
The 12.1 pro looks nice simply due to the larger screen. I was considering buying one myself, but I only had a semester of school left and didn't think I would use it much after that.

Man, that sounds super annoying! Can I ask which variant you have? I traded in an old Samsung Tab 7 (which I didn't even use since I had already upgraded to a Note 8) and got a killer deal on my P607T from a T-mobile store. If you're looking for a good ROM perhaps I can help you out in finding one
In case you're unsure, P600 = wifi only, P605 = International LTE, and P607T = the T-mobile LTE "variant" (very close to just a rebranded P605, and entirely compatible with most P605 ROMS... some may require some minor tweaks prior to flash but I'm really not entirely sure of that because xKat is the only one I've used and easily flashed without a hitch).
P600 = wifi only.
And it's very annoying. I'll be looking at custom roms this weekend.
I like to make a lot of notes for math / computer science subjects.
I already own a Galaxy Note 4 phone that comes with a stylus -- will this work on the Tab S2?
The S2 doesn't support an active stylus like the one with your Note. They made (make?) a Note tablet, which did.

You can use a stylus, but not an active stylus and it will work much differently than an active stylus like on the Note. A normal stylus will work just like a finger.

you can use any capacitive pen (some are also called stylus/bamboo), however, none have the stylus pen technology.
the cheaper tab A model does have the S PEN technology (also stylus)
all models work with capacitive pens and your fingers, but not all work with stylus pens(these are the capacitive ones)....
please correct me if I am wrong.
I came here to ask the reason why Samsung designed the cheaper Tab A with S pen technology while the tab S2 was not.
By the way , the TAB s2 is hat...
