[Q] Wifi Direct - LG Optimus 2x

Hi Everybody.
Is it possible to get Wifi Direct working on our O2x?
Seems like nobody tried it yet.
I just found it as a new Feature on my GirlfriendĀ“s SGS I ICS Alpha(never been available before), and as far as i read itĀ“s possible if the Targetdevice has a Bluetooth-Chip and Wlan N.
Some Answers from Devs would be nice.

I'd be interested in this feature. Great for transferring files when out and about.

If it is for file transfer...then i recommend MyPhone Explorer which has Wifi, Bluetooth and USB syncing...it is very easy and safe to archive ur phone call record, sms and also battery monitor....try it...installation on Computer and client on mobile

Is there any such application for transferring files between android phones via wifi?

MyPhoneExplorer....I told you or software Data Cable...the first one works like a charm....

What does it do exactly? I mean WiFi Direct?

It's like Bluetooth between two devices but with wifi...

Ever heard of "ftp:172.27.118.21
Ftp:172.27.118.32
Connected same wifi same channels. So its possible via ftp.

Right...this is via Software Data Cable....also possible via MyPhone Explorer....also through Bluetooth and USB...easily

Web Remote Desktop do the same also.

Wifi direct can be used to transfer files between two phones without a computer or a separate wifi network. So the apps recommend here don't really do the same thing. Ics is the first version of android that allows apps to use wifi direct capabilities of a phone. If the Samsung galaxy s has wifi direct then the optimus 2x will have it as well since we have the same wifi and Bluetooth chip (broadcom 4329)

I guess there is an app for that? I'm using nexus s. is there centralized app for all androids?

[Q] PdaNet Tablet (beta) android to android with bluetooth

Has anyone else tried this app?
Im on tnt lite 4.4 and when I connect my gtab freezes.
I had the app working for a couple minutes at most.
Ive tried different browsers, but nothing, next I might try a different rom
and see if that works.
I have to try and use this app because I dont have root on my mobile yet.
Edit: i changed my rom to G harmony v2.4.
It connects but force closes on me, better then freezing up my tablet though.
Works for about five minutes, sometimes it doesnt want to connect at first either.
Edit: using cyanogenmod 7.0.3 this app works.
Currently connected to my mobile.
No freezing or force closes.
Here is the market description
This is a tablet version of the extremely popular PdaNet software. It allows you to share the Internet access of an Android device with another Android device through Bluetooth. You should install this application on both the tablet and the phone. Then run client mode on a tablet and server mode on a phone. No rooting required. Connection speed should be very fast if your phone has good data service. PdaNet works by setting the web proxy server on your tablet and route web requests to a Bluetooth DUN service. That means only applications that use web connections will work. On Honeycomb devices PdaNet supports Browser, Gmail and Map. For Android 2.2/2.3 devices PdaNet only supports the Browser app. We understand this solution is not ideal but it is really the only way to tether an Android tablet due to OS restrictions. This application is completely free and we hope it will be useful to you.

Tethered via WiFi is just one option but I think the whole point was to do it via Bluetooth.
I can't say for sure if BT has a better/stronger connection than WiFi, but it's something I've been yearning to find out.

I probably wouldn't use this if I could tether over wifi though.
This app is beta and on froyo and gingerbread you can only get internet on
Your browser app.
But it's free and I need to root my mobile.
I've been traveling and dont have a computer right now.
I saw it in the market on my Evo, but NOT on my Gtablet. How can I get it from my not rooted Evo to my rooted Viewsonic GTablet?
Can you backup your apps on your phone?
should be able to put it on your sdcard, then transfer it to your gtablet and install.
Just tried it, it pairs but does not connect via bluetooth. I'm rooted as well. From my understanding android had widespread issues connecting via bluetooth as a server/client to another android device.
Using an Apple or Windows based phone I have no issues.

Can anyone tell me how to get it running or suggest another program that will allow me to us my phones data plan that i am already paying for??
thanks in advance for any help !!
I don't suppose anyone knows if PDANet for iphone supports bluetooth? WIFI takes away WAYYYYY too much battery life.

[BUG] WiFi Portable Hotspot with Ad-Hoc supported ROMs

Hello everyone,
I just received my Asus Transformer (WiFi Only) and wanted to connect it to my Nexus S portable hotspot.
The Transformer found the hotspot network and even connected to it but I wasn't able to open web pages or even sync my google account.
I tested this on 2 Transformer units, Galaxy S II phone and a Nexus One (with CM7 which also can't generate a working hotspot network).
After several tests I've discovered every ROM that has Ad-Hoc support behaves the same - generate hotspot network that you can connect to but can't actually use. Also tested all WiFi tether apps on Market - all beacon ad-hoc networks, which Stock Android 3.1 can't find&connect to.
I tested all Ad Hoc supported ROMs: CM7 latest nightly, CM7.0.3 stable, MIUI latest, Oxygen and SupeAosp8.6. Finally flashed a stock 2.3.4 ROM and the hotspot feature worked perfectly. Also tested it on both Nexus S radios (KB3 and KD1).
Would love if someone can locate and fix this bug...
Probably something in the wpa_supplicant file or with DNS resolving.
Thank you!
EDIT: A solution for my specific issue - Will allow Ad Hoc support on the Transformer.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1093778
Still won't solve the main issue when you have to root and add Ad Hoc support for both devices.
I also encountered this problem.
What I did was download an App called: Wireless Tether for Root Users
I would use it anyway because it tracks data usage and enables security options.

Thanks for replying.
As I wrote in the OP, I've tried every WiFi tether app on the Android Market, including wifi tether for root users. All uses adhoc networks which stock Android devices can't see and connect to.
what solves it for me is adding dns host ip on the client computer
it works fine when you do that
I use PDAnet for tablets with my TF - it works really well. You can download it from the market.

You used it to connect your tablet to a hotspot network generated from your CM7/SupeAosp8.6, Oxygen or MIUI ROM?

Thanks, we did it as well on a Linux machine for testing but you can't set static IP on Honeycomb... at least not on stock version.
Regarding PDA for tablets, reading the app description on the Market I understand it uses Bluetooth sharing and not wifi tether. Also, it clearly says it only works for browser, email and YouTube apps. Hardly a solution.
I'll work with a Linux expert today to see if he can solve this. If so, I'll upload the files here.

Yes, I misread your op, hands up; I'm guilty as charged. However, you should perhaps be a little less dismissive of people trying to help you. Also it may have helped if you had posted your question to the correct thread in the first place (that's hardly difficult is it!).

LOL did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed today?
I REALLY wasn't trying to dismiss you... AT ALL!
Your solution will probably be great for many other people but as I mentioned in the OP, I'm looking for a specific solution for the WiFi tether, which is an option coming with stock Android and doesn't require users of any other apps or system knowledge.
As already mentioned, I'm working with a linux guy to check maybe he can make both things work - Ad-Hoc and stock Android WiFi Tether option.
If the XDA moderators think this should go into Q&A/General they can move it. I believe it should be here as it is relevant for all ROM developers here.

[Q] How to use Wifi Direct?

Hi
Well, I wanted to know how to use wifi direct to send things to my friend. His phone has wifi direct and my black too, but I don't know how to use. I read that I need an app called wifi cast, and I found this app on smartworld. I installed the app, but I don't know what do I have to do.
Thanks
Short: I don't know, but if you want know something about my experiment
After nearly a year with my black I wanted to try this feature. I could connect a Galaxy S2 with my Black. Then I tried to send a file from the S2. Error. I searched for a possibility to send a file from the black over wifi-direct but, there is no button for that.
I assume that LG wants you to use "Smartshare", but afaik that works only with other LG devices.
Hi Swaddy
Thanks for the answer.
My friend has a galaxy note, and some weeks ago I could connect my black to his note, but I didn't send any pic to his phone. But this week, I tried to connect and I couldn't, don't know why. I guess smartshare doesn't send files, but thanks anyway

for now we can use wifi direct for sending pics videos between two optimus black only using wifi cast, i have two OB @ home so i tested it but when i want to send it to my galaxy s2 or my brother's galaxy note it gets connected through wifi direct but wifi cast doesn't show them so its not possible to transfer with other devices except optimus black
The most useful for me is Copying files between OB and PC using WiFi direct. I have read somewhere that the other device doesn't need to have the WiFi direct hardware feature. Everything can be enabled with software... but How?
I use file manager by rhythm software it has LAN capabilities so i can connect to my PC by IP address.
Trolling in the deep
I am totally loss

can we share files with wifi direct?

Hi
can we share files/songs with two galaxy phones via wifi direct, like same as bluetooth?
Hello
I am not sure but It could be possible with Kies air.
Give a try ...!
I could share pictures with "Allshare" using my Note and my wife's Galaxy S Advance. Very easy to use

The reason for my confusion came from watching a video on youtube which suggested that only one of the two devices needed to support wifi direct in order to connect.
yes we can share file like BT, but opposite device shud hav wifi direct available. (not available on all android)
Is it possible if modded on CM10 for WiDi to werk??

How to use Android beam and WiFi direct on o4x

Can anybody tell me how to use android beam and WiFi direct on o4x? I have tried every permutation and combination to get these working but failed only play store opens and says item not found
Don't understand what you mean.
You find the settings or those are not working? What do you exactly mean?
Maybe this process needs an app and that app is not available in your country .
Maybe .
I mean to say, when ever i am trying to receive the data from other device over nfc i.e. through android beam, i am unable to receive the data and android play store pops up searching for some app and as said earlier that app is not available for my country (may be) due to which a msg pops up which says"App not available" Can anybody help me to get rid of this?
Hi Kanad,
I have tested the NFC and Wifi direct with many phones (apart from LG). When you turn on NFC, go to your gallery open a picture and now place your phone's back(as lg has nfc at its back) to the area of any other NFC enabled phone. When you do so your phone will vibrate and a message will pop on your screen stating Touch to beam. Please note our NFC only transfers photos or some website page. It is not to be confused with Samsung android beam. Our NFC uses bluetooth while Samsung uses wifi.
Coming to wifi direct. We cannot transfer files even though we connect through wifi direct to any Samsung devices. For using wifi direct we need to have a program called wifi cast or fast file transfer.

I'm sorry for asking this stupid question, but is it possible to send or receive large files, like mkv or some sort with wifi direct?
I've tried sending some movies over wifi direct to LG L9 but always failed. I've always thought wifi direct has got the same inner working as bluetooth, is that correct?
Sorry for these silly questions, I'm quite a noob on Android.

The largest file I ever sent via Wifi Direct using Fast File Transfer is an archive file with the size of 276 MB and the transfer was successful. I haven't tried to send anything larger. Also, the transfer was from my friend's Lenovo K860 to my O4X

Hey, yes we can share files more than1 GB. You will require the right program. For Eg. Wifi Cast only supports pictures, etc. So fastfiletransfer can help you in this case.
