I have a question about using my insurance to replace my rooted Droid. Will it be voided if I leave clockwork recovery on it, but removed root? Should I use RSD lite and flash it completely stock first rather than just flashing an unrooted rom?
You have to use RSD Lite to flash it to complete stock w/ no Recovery and no Root, otherwise they will not take your phone back because Root/ a custom Recovery void the warranty when they are installed.

If you're filing an insurance claim it shouldn't matter. You'll still pay the deductible, which is$ 90.

i was told by my verizon store rep that, when i rooted, if it bricked my phone she'd just order me a new phone. she didnt know anything about it voiding the warranty. of course she also didnt know what rooting was...so take that as what you will
Well then, you are a very lucky duck.

Well, I just got my replacement today. I did use RSD lite to clear everything. I flashed 2.01, though. XD I upgraded it to 2.2 to try and not make it look completely obvious, but I don't think they could find root on that if they tried to. Thanks for the replies.
Can someone post a step-by-step method on how to update to. 902 and keep root. The more detail the better. I only ask this because this is my second bionic and I dont want to brick it.
Thanks in advance!
I'm in the same boat haven't bricked but never rooted a locked boot loader device before but I just want me some taste of ics..

I did unr3l3as3droot and forever root first. Then I did the path saver. Then I flashed 896 and 901. After that, I downloaded the 902 ota but didn't install it. Moved it from /cache to the external SD card. Then I turned the phone off. To turn it back on, I hit both volume up and down as I powered it back on. That took me to a different menu that I can't currently think of the name but that is where you will flash 902 at. Remember that the 902 update has 901 in its file name when flashing. If you come across a triangle thing, hit volume up and down and the update will flash.

Easier root method...
There is an easier way then this now...
1. Install update
2. Use the Droid 4 exploit found at vulnfactory.org/blog/2012/02/11/rooting-the-droid-4-a-failed-bounty-experiment/ and yes it works for the Bionic on 5.9.902 (i just got done using it)
3. Look at your phone.... its now rooted.
And everyone who uses it should donate to djrbliss and prove that the Android community can support such a valuable asset!

I just did the OTA over wireless and did the update and I kept ROOT.
I did un-froze all the apps I had frozen with titanium backup before applying the update.
Still have root...
In my case, the update wouldn't install. I had to go all the way back before I could go forward.

The Eclipse developer just released his latest update 04/30/12 in the last day and it now has even more polish especially for those who don't appreciate Motorola Blur.

It says that. Ignore it. It is .904 mine said the same.
and no. you have to be on stock .902 bloated, odexed, root is okay, but you will lose it. If not on stock .902 you have to FXZ back, then go in to stock recovery (holding both volume buttons and powering up, and pressing down once and up to open it) then one the fancy logo appears press both volume buttons, the apply update. Navigate to it and select it. Then once its done you'll be .904 stock, unrooted. So run the motofail root script. Then enjoy.

I have a question. I don't own a bionic, but my brother in law has one (great phone), I rooted it with motofail, installed safestrap. He is on.902 currently. once I had him ripped, I immediately switched to the safe side. It made a backup before it switched to safe. I put eclipse 2.2 on it. Now. I am waiting for 904 to go official. When I switch back to unsafe, will I be back on stock right away? or do I have to do a restore of that backup once I am back on unsafe side?
Now, once back to stock, rooted 902, can he get an ota? I would think he could. I know in my thunderbolt, if you are stock and rooted, you can get an ota. Sorry for all the questions, just want to be sure what to do. Moto is much different than htc is in this respect. Thanks, Daniel

I applied 904 to my unsafe system just by switching over to it and following the guide. You will likely have to reflash eclipse after backing up your unsafe system again. I didn't though and switched back to safe system and checked phone info and it has the updated radios

Once the official release hits probably. First you would revert back to your "unsafe" system through the safestrap boot menu which should still be running stock 902 (or whatever version he has) Once that is loaded you reboot and it will boot your stock system.
Once your up and running in the stock system the phone will update its apps(Since the stock system has not been run since you rooted/rom'd I'm assuming). I recommend being on WiFi if possible unless he has unlimited data. After that completes you will need to Hit the button to the left of the home button (the 4 blocks with one colored in) > Settings > About Phone > System Updates.
It will look for the update and download it OTA if available. It will wipe out your root so you will need to motofail again after that and probably reinstall SafeStrap(I had to)

Forgot to mention. You may or may not have to reflash Eclipse to your safe system after the update. I personally didn't and the radios are reflecting the update but the system is still showing as 902 update since im running off of my original 902 eclipse flash.
Anybody got any info on the OTA I have been notified of soak but havent herd anything for about a week and a half? I wonder if it will even be 904 Moto will probably change the # just because they could.

Stuck waiting, just like ICS
It's pretty pathetic that they can't even get minor updates out the door. It doesn't bode well for us getting ICS before this phone outlives its usefulness. Sorry to be so cynical, but, VZW and updates has just been horrible. (And not just for the Bionic....right, anyone waiting for an official ICS build for a 4G Xoom? All 2 of you that haven't rooted it and gone to a ROM...) Uh, anyway, let's hope they get this update rolled out soon so we can resume the wait for ICS.

I don't want to seem like an A-hole. But before the phone out lives its usefulness? Almost any smart phone on the market will be useful for years. It's only the american greed wanting the newest baddest phones. How many people actually wait the full 2 years before upgrading? I know I don't. Cell phones have came a long ways, and my wifes DROID OG is still being used as a back up phone being 3 years old. So use a different argument. We will get it, just be patient

I guess you completely missed my point. What I don't want to see happen, and is very POSSIBLE, is that we get ICS after Jelly Bean is released. You're going to tell me that would make you happy? If I had waited a couple more months from when I bought the Bionic in the first place, i.e. having the patience you're telling me I need now, I could have simply bought a phone that CAME with ICS rather than having to wait months for it...

It wouldnt make me happy, nor would it upset me. I buy my phones according to the hardware and the specs that I think will fit me the best. The operating system is just an added bonus. Of course I want ICS, and then Jelly Beam, but I'm not going to complain about the speed I receive the update. Some are faster, some are slower. Just the way of life. Id rather wait.an extra 4 months for a build that isn't super glitchy, as to have it as soon as it's released and it not function properly. Just my opion

I come from an eris phone where you wipe and flash roms all day long. Well I got my bionic from android market wiped and flashed 2.2 eclipse using rom manager and laptop with no issues using rsdlite. From what I have read here I should not have been able to do this, no bootstrap or safestrap. Is it possible I have an unlocked bootloader?
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using xda app-developers app
This makes me wonder if ROM Manager has actually managed to include some Bootstrap-like functionality to accommodate locked bootloader devices.
If you wanted to truly test if your bootloader were unlocked, you could go manually download CWM recovery for the Bionic and then, when booted into Fastboot mode, use fastboot.exe to see if you can invoke the command fastboot flash recovery recovery.img. At worst case, you have a bricked Bionic and have to RSD Lite it back to normal. Otherwise you could get access denied. At best case it works out.
Also, Bionics aren't sold via the Android Market. Where did you actually get it from?
RSD Lite shouldn't ever be a problem on any Motorola device. All Moto devices are made to respond to RSD Lite assuming you have the correct SBF or FXZ fie.
Sorry got bionic from Android Central

Good ol Droid Eris. I loved that thing, but the manufacturing sucked and I went through 6 of them before Verizon finally gave me a Droid 2 as a replacement. But the Roms, I haven't had an Android like it since. I got kind of spoiled on Roms and went through flash withdrawal after it. From my understanding, many former Eris owners also went through withdrawal since our newer ones had no where close to that much development. I may end up buying a used one just to flash around with. I swear I had my old one running better than most people's Droid 2s thanks to xda.

There are like a zillion threads (ok I'm exaggerating) ballooning over the forum about, "How do I root .246?"
Motofail works just fine for this. As does Razer's Edge. It's been answered quite a few times by various posters.
Crobs links to Motofail here in Optional Step E:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771993
So hopefully this catches your attention if you're wondering what to use to root. (And hopefully no more new threads on this very simple answer will pop up ^_^)
Thank you for making my search simple for me. Haven't rooted yet but motofail is on my laptop from the gingerbread days.

Unfortunately Motofail didn't work on my Bionic, failed on the 1st step (push exploit folder), continued past but everything got a failure message. I ended up using Razr's Edge (link) which did the trick in one try.
Seems to use the same exploit but slightly different script to push it? (too busy @ work to look into the details, sorry)
Just use Rzrs edge. It honestly doesn't get any easier then that.
Plug in the USB. Turn on debugging. press enter..... done

Unrooting when Razrs Edge was used
I just rooted my bionic after the ICS update and put on Safestrap v3.05 and backed up the system as it was at that point to capture the entire OS and apps. So I can put it back as it was to that point. (Rooted and installed Safestrap v3.05)
My question is 2 fold actually.
1) If/when we get JB, do i need to be unrooted and totally stock to get the OTA OR can i just be rooted and remove Safestrap with all apps and OS restored to full to get the OTA JB?
2) If i need to be unrooted, is there a way to unroot the bionic after i have used Razrs Edage?
Thanks for any help in advance

1. You definitely need to remove safestrap. Root shouldn't be an issue as i understand it. "Forever Roots" are, but you didn't go that route.
2. I believe House of Bionic will unroot and keep data safe. I always fxz before ota events, which wipes everything.
