Camera on X8 - XPERIA X8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone knows any way of improving the X8 camera?
I can't scan a barcode without auto-focus and I was trying to develop something and can't test it on my phone....

I think X8 not support autofocus...

Thare is no way. If someone even does it... He'll be a legend.

This is some improvement for camera but only for video recording here

Hes talking about improving the camera for better quality... Not Vidcam to record videos im mp4 -.-

Autofocus is a hardware related function,so i think its impossible.

i dont know about barcode thing but actually iam using latest camera ZOOM app and it is brilliant with zoom feature and pure 3mp camera better than stock camera , in stock camera if u r taking a pic for something small or far from u it will be dizzy and not a good res. but with camera ZOOM , picture never gets dizzy . srry again if this is not what u wanted .
EDIT : and about the autofocus thing i agree with rodrigo it is impossible
Sent from my E15i using xda premium

for autofocus its not possible, thats hardware related.
but u can use some app like camera zoom etc to give u different taste of ure camera.

I know but It was only one thing I found and I told its for video recording. And zoom apps have very bad quality

As others have already stated, the X8 has no autofocus capability. In addition, the minimum focus distance is somewhere between 20-30 cm (standard problem with a fixed focus lens), so it's practically impossible to get a good shot of a barcode, unless it's huge
However, there is a "trick" you can try, at least if you just want to test the capabilities of your own software.
1. You'll need to find (or buy) a small magnifying glass, one of those cheap €1-2 glasses with do;
2. Next, hold the magnifying glass directly in front of the camera - the camera lens should be touching the magnifying glass, as close to the centre as you can get (be careful not to drop your phone!);
3. Point the phone at your barcode. You should now be able to focus much closer than before (to within 5-10cm);
4. Take your photo!
If you would like to see the sort of photos you can get with this "improvised macro" setup, take a look at my album, here (I can't post links yet, so you'll need to copy/paste this into your browser):
Code:
picasaweb.google.com/efotografo/SonyEricssonX8MacroTests?authuser=0&feat=directlink
Most of these photos used a single magnifying glass, but for one of the coins I used TWO identical glasses joined together with tape.
HTH
John

Thats smart..still where da hell will i get so small lenses in my town!

You don't need a small lens lol, the magnifying glasses I used were about 7cm in diameter! Having a large lens also makes it easier to balance the X8 on top
You just need to make sure that the camera lens is placed as close to the middle of the magnifying glass lens as possible (to prevent/minimize distortion of the image).

Camera Zoom

This camera has some kind of zoom, right? Optical or digital? Can someone explain how to zoom in the default camera app? I can't find the buttons or settings or anything... TIA!
there is no way it can be optical, even a photo amateur will know that.
yes there is digital zoom feature included
right. so how do i zoom?
Use the volume buttons.
I never would have guessed that. Thank-you!
But digital zoom is useless..

You don't have to tell me that. Thankfully I don't rely on my camera for high quality images.
ohh you'll be surprised with our build in camera
it has auto focus, shaky hands control (IS), and lots and lots of other features
and if that is not enough, you can also use 3rd party professional photo camera software, results are even more amazing.
there as a side by side comparison in a topic forum
but i forgot the tittle

I'm actually a hobby photographer. The cell phone cam does indeed have many great features... but such a small sensor in a phone + plastic optics will never be on-par with a real camera, even one with less megapixels.
yup for real photos i use my Cannon (model #) IS... damn having a mental lapse, can't remember a lot of anything

The one thing that bothers me about this phone is...

I'll start this off by saying I am new to this phone. I currently use this and a galaxy note 2, but for all purposes this has been my daily driver. I have been very pleased with nearly every aspect of it, but there is one small thing that has been driving me up the wall (maybe it exists but I'm simply missing it??):
Why is there no macro mode??!!??
I like to take macro shots, and because of this I cannot get nearly as close as I can on pretty much any other phone I've owned. For some reason it will not focus extremely close.
I'm so confused as to why they left this out.. The intelligent auto does next to nothing to fix it. You can get in relatively close, but not macro close. Any other fixes other than using a different camera app (if that would even fix the issue)?
I use the Lenovo app, its great and there is a macro mode.

You cannot get as close as you can with most cameras
I tested with my note 2, and others (which were able to get much closer)...
It just won't focus properly
i get good macro shots can you upload a macro shot to see what are you talking about
You can try all the applications that you want, simply won't focus under 10-12 cm.
I don't know why, but it is so.
Touch focus is better for me, Touch the object you want and your phone will try to focus
But, don't get too close, 8-12cm is the normal range for phone to take very sharp macro photos.
If you want to get closer, don't forget that crop "Digital Zoom" function, Yes it reduce the quality, but you can make better composition.

That is what I use, touch focus,..
Imo that isn't a real macro then
I mean a macro, not just a "fairly course picture"

Imo for macro shot Xperia S is better than Xperia Z (I have both). With XS I can focus properly at 5-6 cm.
Not being nasty in any way, but lets remember, this is only a phone. The camera is a convenience, not a luxury. If you want great macro shots or the like then you need to be looking to either hit up a DSLR or like me head for the oldschool SLRs.

Haven't had the issue with pretty much any other phone I've owned though
I'm just not really sure why it is like this.
This kind of answer isn't really helpful though in any way.
Sony are praised for their cameras, yet they leave out a basic feature that my note 2 has, and my older x10 had.
Just seems strange

I appreciate it is a strange decision, but then so was the choice to release the add on lense things.Honestly, manufactures do slip up, and I would guess this was one of those times. It's a shame, aside from the battery bug issue and the one you are on about, the phone is near perfection.
Right.. We actually need manual focus like in the pro camera app from Nokia.. And it's now impossible since I've used manual focus on a gingerbread LG phone before.. Tried Porting the app, get fc moments after the ui shows

Why you dont shoot from 10-12 cm with goog focus and next go to crop the image with edithor - stock or something from the market.Or just use digital zoom- it is actualy real time croping. The picture is 13 mpx and have many many pixels to zoom/crop.

Besides the point though really..
It is a very basic feature, I just can't understand why it isn't there. Does the s4 have it (since it uses the same sensor I hear)?

[Q] can someone help me stop heavy post processing?

I have a sony xperia Z C6603 and I absolutely hate something about the phone. Before i take pictures it looks great (amazing even) as i take the photo the picture is perfect, then after a second it processes it so much i look more like an alien from outer space than a human being. Not only this but the files are also ridiculously small compare to all other phones. I've downloaded the FV-5 app and it's great, but my photos from my front camera stll lokks like horse s***. i do not want other setting configurations, because nothing fixes it... Has anybody made a fix for this via rooting or whatever? i've searched all over the internet after a solution , but can't seem to find one. One of you geniuses must have a solution, right? (have the 4.3 android version and 10.4.B.0.569 build number).
Not yet. People have tried.many things but.no luck so far. At least Sony finally updated the camera app which was the same since x1 was released

geez.... Yah... my photos did not get better at all, haha. If they could just change the format to JPG or whatever (know that is big files) that would be fantastic, but nooo.... (now referring to sony and not XDA-developers) Great phone, TERRIBLE photo software.

we can see it two ways
the camera hardware sucks and we can't do anything about it
or the camera software sucks and we have to wait for sony to update their binaries and libraries and other stuff. which we also cannot do anything about.

Hello!
I have installed AOKP 4.3 ROM on my Xperia Z. When I need to take a fast picture, I just use auto ISO/Exposure...
When I wanna get better picture in low light, I just use a little bit tweaking In low light, when I'm taking picture of some close object, I just put ISO on 100/200 (max), use flash and that's it! When I'm taking picture a little bit further (3/4 meters), I use 200/400 ISO, and use flash if I can (very big con of our device is bad flash). When I'm doing night portrait, just put ISO on 400 and turn on HDR, photos will look awsome believe me
Tonight I could upload some pictures from my Z, just to give you some clue.
P.S. When you're using front camera, turn on HDR you will get a much better photo quality

Did you turned off 'soft tan effect'' or something like this? It helps a bit on stock ROM (Honami camera app)
I'm using AOKP ROM and I have better front camera picture quality than my friend (Galaxy S4), I just turned on HDR

I just flashed the ROM after aloooooooot of work and I currently have the PAC-MAN ROM and the picture quality is amazing. It takes pictures in JPEG automaticallly and the files aren't that big! If anyone wants to do this I can deliver some links which actually unlocks bootloader, roots and flashes ROM, looked for the right downloads for ages.

[Q] Will the Lollipop update fix the terrible camera?

As we all know the sensor and lens on the Z3 are some of the best on the market right now. However, for some reason, Sony, who make maybe the best compact cameras out there, seems to have failed miserably in regard to the camera software in its phones. All photos come out with little detail, soft focus, artifacts and overprocessed. Do you think that will get fixed in 5.0(2)? Will the camera finally be comparable to, say, the Galaxy Note 4 or some of the Lumias?
Regards.
what terrible camera?
i'm no Ansel Adams, but i think the Z3c has a great camera, especially once you get the hang of it.

In theory yes. With Lollipop we will be able to take RAW images with the camera due to the new api. RAW images are unprocessed, straight from the sensor. The Sony camera sensor is good but the software image processing isn't. Taking photos in RAW eliminates the poor image processing so the images should be much much better.

I actually agree on this, especially when taking photos. All the other devices I used before my Z3 Compact did not try to focus again after I already touched focus a certain area, but my Z3C actually does so as I press the shutter button. It also has trouble trying to focus on really close objects, only able to get precise focus 1/10 of the time.
I personally use google camera for simple, clear, low-processed pictures. The drawback is that the photos cannot be saved on the sd card w/o root.
Or, you can very well use the manual mode - this one also is pulling some nice photos, w/o blur,

Atleast on the regular Z3 you can choose to save photos and videos on the sd card directly.
Camera, the three blocks, settings icons.
I'm currently playing around with the app ABetterCamera and so far images are taken faster and low light photos look much better. They have an option to choose where to store the photos and if you choose external card it gives you the message Android doesn't allow that...BUT there is an option to choose custom folder which I pointed to the SDCard and it worked!
Yeah I find the camera terrible too.
My dads Note 2 takes much better pictures. If I put them side by side at a certain distance and take a picture of a piece of paper, on one I can clearly read what is written on it, and on the other it's all blurrines. I didn't expect this camera to suck that big especially compared to such an old low-res camera.
If that was not enough, colors are much more innatural on the sony, while the note 2 reproduces them much better...

I personally will not get my hopes up that Sony will do anything to the camera software to improve image quality just because 5.0 supports RAW format. Sony may not even include RAW support in their version of 5.0.
So many times, phone manufacturers pick and choose which features of android to implement or substitute that feature with their own.

The formal answer is "no" - it will NOT fix the poor image processing. RAW format is not supported by Sony in Android 5.0

Hardware is indeed great, but software is very bad, and since the combination of both make the picture, the camera needs to be fixed (software part).
I mean look at all the phones using SONY sensors, they take excellent pictures on AUTO. Z3? Nope, rarely. Manual is super, but sometimes you do not have the time to fiddle around with the settings. And no DNG RAW in 5.0.2? Well, totally wasted potential of this phone's camera.
I'm very disappointed with the Z3C camera too... I mean, considering the specs, I was hoping for a lot much better pictures.
I´ve just got mine, I did a lot of research before buying a new phone (I had a Note 2), and the main reasons why I bought this phone are: size/specs, battery life and camera. I also considered buying the Moto Maxx (Brazilian Droid Turbo variant) but the Z3C compactness (is this a word?) made me chose it and I'm kind of regretting it a little bit... lol

The iPhone with 2 cameras have optical zoom. So not all phones. Probably some huawei phones as well.
If you want clear zoom (for visually impaired) get a zoom lens that clips on.
As for fuzziness (this note is for OP) try fussing with the app. HQ mode etc.. Also is it low light or bright light?
