Have you unlocked your phone yet? That is the first step. The htcdev site is where you do that. You don't download bootloaders though. Also go to the development section of the vivid forums and read the Superguide sticky on unlocking, rooting, etc. It is awesome. It will really guide you through all of the steps to get your phone unlocked, rooted, and romed!

nope. you have to unlock the bootloader first. register.. select your device.. then follow the instructions.. make sure you have the latest android-sdk..
Ok thanks a lot. I will try it today.

I don't want to mess this up and I know HTC has different names in different regions so i want to be 100% sure. After i unlock the bootloader do i just use this to get root?
I have the Bell Canada HTC Raider 4G LTE. Want to be 100% sure i got the right thread.
Yep, that will give you root. It will also give you a custom recovery and rom if you want.

There is actually a thread under development that is for rooting the Bell RAIDER with instructions. I would use that post as your guide.

Yeah that is outdated, I ended up following those steps but the new recovery image from thecubed thread and the new root from Pirateghost.
Seems to be good, now i just need to figure out how to remove the bloatware.

If you want to remove bloatware it is very easy. Download a program like titanium backup or no bloat. They will allow you to freeze/remove apps that you don't want. Real easy to use both.
hehe thanks that's what i ended up doing
Glad to hear it!

Hi I been trying to root my att HTC vivid. But I can't seem to get it to work. I try the all in one tool. But I can't get a token Id. Cms pops up n said invalid. I try use the method from the super guide but I can get to the install zip part. I don't know if I need to unlock downloader first or not. If so I can't get that to work either. I am new to rooting on HTC. My Samsung galaxy s2 on T-Mobile was very simple. Please help. Thanks!!!

1. Can I leave hboot off unrooted
2. Can I lock hboot without a PC
3. Some tutorials say to lock hboot before flashing back to stock. I was aware u needed hboot unlocked to do this.

Ok so here is where I run into my issues. I am a gamer on my phone. At some point everyone is. But I play perblues games parallelmafia and parallel kingdom. On ics on the vivid I am getting some kind of skipping lag. And its only on that game. Maybe someone can help and try to figure the issue. I also called HTC support they attempted with same issue.

Hi I just got a Vivid today and was wondering where to start. I am coming from a unlocked Dell streak using streak mod recovery. This uses clockwork I take it. Was wondering what the s on and s off stuff is and which is the best root method. I've seen 3. Btw this is a att locked vivid.
Thanks for any help and nice to meet you all.

"S-ON" means security on. So that means you can't flash unsigned ROM's. And the best way to start with the rooting and unlocking is with the "[SUPERGUIDE] ICS-Root-Flash-Stock" or the "[TOOL] HTC Vivid All-In-One Toolkit V2.2 [6-7-2012] [PERM ROOT] [Noob-Proof]" If you're a complete noob. They're both in the development part for the Vivid at the top of the list. Best of luck to you.
S-off is most useful for allowing the recovery to flash the kernel in a new ROM. You can still do this manually via fastboot and a PC. Other than that, you should be able to flash the other parts of the ROM without s-off, but Your Mileage May Vary.
The process for s-off is detailed in the Vivid Android development section as well, but be warned it is marginally difficult and requires a Phillips 000 screwdriver in order to remove one of the backplate on the phone. That being said, it is a worthwhile endeavour and you only need to do it once. Since you're already on AT&T, you don't need to worry about getting the ICS hboot on your phone, so this process is one step easier.

Also in the superguide in the development section where it talks about flashing kernels, there is an app there that lets you flash kernels in android so you do not have to do it in fastboot. Hope you enjoy your phone.
Thanks for all the good info guys. I can tell I'm gonna like it here.

Hey, I unlocked my HTC Dream (Rogers, post 911 patched) bootloader from the HTC Dev site: http://www.htcdev.com/devcenter/
The Dream/G1 bootloader unlock code is now provided by HTC themselves. Everything went smoothly but I don't know what to do next. I know I needed to do this to install custom ROMs (I'm on android 1.5 right now, want to go to gingerbread 2.3) but i have no clue how/where to start.
Any help would be seriously appreciated.
The HTC dev bootloader is garbage and will only cause you headaches. Relock the bootloader and root properly, Google search cyanogenmod wiki dream, follow those steps

Hi, thanks for the reply, however I only went down the HTC route cuz this link http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/wiki/Rogers_Dream:_Rooting_(Post-911_Patch) doesn't work. Many people have the same problem as me that the exploid, doesn't work, but I couldn't find a solution.
Dunno what to do, all I want is gingerbread lol, thanks for replying though, appreciate it
I don't know why it doesn't work I did it to my rogers g1 back when and it worked fine, what's the issue
