I know its still early in the game, but can someone port this to work on our D3's? going to deactivate one of my D3's for a few months and would love to get this script to work.
It disables the radio as if it was set to Airplane mode, but it does it automatically. Yes, I can just use airplane mode, but figured it would be useful to get working here.

I'm sorry but you can enable wifi while in airplane mode don't see why this is handy for inactive devices? If someone decides to turn it on?
This would be perfect for some old d1s and d2s I have laying around. I know its easy to enable airplane mode then re-enable wifi, but being able to do it automatically is great. I use them for remotes and easily replaced devices for reading in the hot tub. The devices last a several days on wifi, but if I forget to kill the cell radio, they last just a day and change.
Id like to see a media centric rom for old phones that can be used in the car or connected to speakers optimized for best battery life on wifi only. Think how many retired D1s are in the wild!

You can just set airplane mode and it will retain the setting after reboots. What does this do that is any different?

On some phones the airplane mode doesn't stick. Just makes things seamless. The script works great on my older android phone. I can reboot and walk away. It's just a nice to have.

Im sure there are many people out there who bought their tab second hand on craigslist or ebay and ect.... thats my situation.
i have a galaxy vibrant, and am on the simple mobile unlimited plan. ($60 unlimited everything) so i dont use verizon because i tether to my tab using the vibrant. i noticed the radio taking up a good 8% of my battery after 3 hours of standby. so i wanted to disable this since i dont use it. after trying many different apps like apn on/off and others, i realized none work. then i found the solution to be ridiculously simple.
1. go to settings
2. go to wireless settings
3. Hit Airplane Mode ( But that kills wifi so damn)
4. go to wifi settings
5. Enable wifi (It enables wifi while still under airplane mode, thus killing the cdma radio)
there dilema resolved.
now im getting an extra 20% battery life over a full discharge. <3
good luck
Great Idea. THIS SHOULD BE A STICKY.
Just set up my Galaxy...
Thanks.
Good instructions for newbies, but an old topic. And you can't use bluetooth when you are in airplane mode.
Maybe switch.off mobile data. Also when not using toggle wifi off

Or just dial *#*#4636#*#* and switch the radio off
I have to do after each reboot
Thanks guys!
You can also use the Airplane Mode Wi-Fi Tool app, I've been using it for awhile and it works perfectly. It sets it to airplane mode and allows you to use wi-fi in airplane mode. It also stays after reboot. It also allows you to use bluetooth in airplane mode, though I haven't tried this feature yet.

I have two moto Droids (original) that want to turn into Android PDAs. Are there any ROMs that have been built/developed that leave out all the phone and text messaging. I want to keep wi-fi, GPS and email and the ability to use all the apps. Just don't want the radio turned on. Does this exist? If not, are there other ways to accompish he sme goal? I know I could just use it in airpane mode, but I worry that I would not be able to use the GPS.
You could leave it on flight mode forever so radio will always be off.

Airplane mode does turn the radio off but it also prevents me from using Wi-Fi. Any other suggestions?
I had read somewhere that you could rename dialer.apk and some others to disable the radio.
I would be interested in a full rom with cell radio turned off, been playing with my old droids and d2 the last few days and cell standby still eating the most battery even in airplane mode.

Just leave airplane mode on, it'll stay on even after you reboot. It DOES NOT prevent you from using WiFi.
I myself use an old droid as a GPS/music player/web browser, without a sim card inserted.

True. Only Bluetooth require Airplane mode off.
Head over to the Droid development thread. They've got a Honeycomb port you can try.

Am turning N1 into WiFi only music device. Device will have no SIM. Is there a way to completely disable cell radio permanently?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Call *#*#4636#*#*, tap "Phone information" and (nearly at the bottom) tap the "Turn off radio" button.
I think I have seen someone making a rom that is only music, no call function..
Sent from my Nexus One using xda app-developers app
If there will be no sim card, no need to worry because you won't get charged or no data from your provider will be used
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
Even without a SIM, the radio would still connect to a cell to allow for emergency calls. Which still drains the battery. The OP wants the cell radio off (while keeping wifi) as aeroplane mode turns off ALL radios.

On any Android device I have, if you remove the SIM and then do nothing else, the device runs the battery down fast trying to obtain a full, ongoing mobile voice connection.
This app allows you to specify what does/does not run when you invoke Airplane mode. Hence you could theoretically use Airplane mode to turn off mobile functions and leave wifi and bluetooth untouched:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...1bGwsMSwxLDEsIm5ldC5jZW5rYWx0aS5haXJwbGFuZSJd
Let us know if this works for you.
There is another app that does the same thing (modify airplane mode), but it has better ratings, and seems to be a bit more user-friendly.
It is called "Plane Mode Tweaker" by "Chislon Chow" (Can't post links due to new user...)

I disabled the GSM radio using the codes earlier in this thread. This seemed to do the trick and allowed me to turn off the cellular radio. I will monitor battery life, but this seemed like a good approach.
I would've simply used a Tasker script to turn on airplane mode on boot, then turn on wifi. If I didn't want tasker, I'd export it as a tiny app with app factory.
I have a bookmark for a flashable zip, but of course I can't post a link yet since I just registered. So if you google [MOD]Any phone, any ROM: Wi-Fi only mode (disable cell radio) you'll find it on rootzwiki
What it does:
Removes unnecessary apps (Messaging.apk, Phone.apk, TelephonyProvider.apk, Mms.apk, TelocationProvider.apk)
Completely turns off cell radio on bootup
Installs the radiooptions binary in case your ROM does not include it
Prevents emergency calls and 911 calls (good for giving your kids your old phone to play with)

Wonder if that zip might work on Lollipop
Just wanted to give my expierences, but I like a lot of people try to eek out more battery life. So my last thought was if I could switch to 2G while the screen is off, that would save some battery. Unfortunatly stock ROM doesn't allow you to turn on/off 3G, so I installed CM. Once installed, I created a Tasker Profile and Task, that when the screen is off, forces 2G data, and when screen is on, turns on 3G. The only downside, is there is a 1-5 seconds when you turn on screen that you lose data connection. So for me at work for the day I was averaging 8%/h battery drain, and now I am at 4%. hsic wakelock is down to 5% also.
You can also add that when it's connected to WiFi disable 3g.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I don't use Tasker but imagine it has a way to set exceptions. It'd be a good idea to set the task to not apply if a streaming app is active-- Google Play Music, Pandora, etc.
Otherwise, there's probably good battery savings by keeping it on gsm over umts.
I'm assuming there's no issues with gsm/umts handoff when receiving a call.

I'm imagining a newer version of tasker can toggle airplane mode on android 4.2 (would require root.). Otherwise, I've been liking macrodroid a lot. The free version allows 3 single conditions rules and can easily do what you're looking for. Again, toggling airplane mode in android 4.2 requires root.

Macro droid is awesome! Bought the full version. Its tasker , simplified
Howdy all. I was wondering if anybody has been able to toggle the wifi hotspot via Tasker, software toggle, or anything like that?
I have tried to set up the task to toggle the hotspot in a number of ways. I've tried it native, Secure Settings, Wifi Hotspot Plugin, using toggle, on, and off options. It works to enable the hotspot, but it will not disable the hotspot. To disable I have to go into hotspot settings and manually disable. This led me to try a toggling via softwares such as Power Toggles and similar. Same results, hotspot will be enabled, but won't disable without entering hotspot settings and manually disabling.
This isn't a biggie, but it would be nice to be able to toggle the hotspot using Tasker via Pebble...
Thanks for any input!
Nope - it doesn't work! It is a biggie for me because I use a 7" Anroid Tablet in my car as my infotainment system. Via Tasker I have my phone turn on hotspot anytime it connects to my car's Bluetooth and turn it off when it disconnects from car. Worked great on my old S3.
Now with the Droid Turbo, it doesn't work. Tasker and some 3rd Party apps actually can turn on HotSpot but can't turn it off (which is the bigger deal since I will often forget to disable it and be burning data when I should be on wifi).
There is also a bug where if you enable it via Tasker or 3rd Party app, then when you disable it in the HotSpot Phone Settings, it will not automatically turn WiFi back on as it should. I have checked with support via Moto and Verizon and there is no fix for this other than hopefully in a future update.
Very annoying to get a phone that is 2.5 years newer and have it not work with basic things that your old phone did. Anyway, I'd recommend posting your desire for this in the official Motorola Forums for Droid Turbo and the Verizon Wireless Forums because those are the ones the companies actually look at to see what bugs are bothering people most and need to be fixed.
Wait... so you're able to enable Wi-Fi hotspot without root on droid turbo? Unlimited data? Or just because you can otherwise use Wi-Fi hotspot on a tiered plan and just want to automate?

This really bites. It was the whole reason I bought Tasker. I have a Maxx with KK and have the same experience. I can turn on the hot spot just fine with Tasker but it won't turn it off. I wanted the automation so I don't forget.

Be sure to join the official Motorola Website forums and post your complaint/concern. I think it may be the only place Moto's powers that be look to see what needs to be improved. But yeah, it's very annoying. Based on my experience so far, though there are many things I love about this phone, I don't think I'd go with Moto again.

I don't know because I never considered that as a realistic option for my uses.

What my thought was is this: I have an Chinese android HU in my truck. It has 2 USB ports on it. I could use the USB port to charge the phone and tether through it also. Might even put a powered USB hub in the mix too. Thought this could easily be configured with tasker to set up.
Steve
BTW: Thanks for the great Tasker video's. I'm brand new to tasker and they've helped out.
