galaxy tab 7" rom upgrade - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

GF has a 7" tab running the stock telstra rom, is it as simple as getting the a stock rom package and loading it via odin like i do with my sgs2 ?
if so what is the latest stock rom for this device and can anyone link me to these.
many thanks.

I remembered seeing something on this some time ago, please review this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=971870
It's dated back to February 2011 so this will probably be a Froyo kernel but should cover getting you all the way back to "orginal" stock. From there, most recommendations in the thread (and others) are to get the latest stock via the Samsung Kies utility. If you don't have Kies... just doing a google search on "Samsung Kies" should get you to plenty of download links.
If you are interested in a custom ROM, you should review this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=932082
It does look like it's for froyo version of the Overcome kernel... but if you also search the Galaxy Tab Android Development forum for "Overcome 4.0" or "Overcome 4.1" you should be able to get connected with that latest in custom GB kernels.
The threads do have thorough (if sometimes a little complicated) instructions.

Snap! Just saw I forgot the 2nd thread. Its:

For custom kernels, there are 2 kernels that I personally like, AF974 and Overcome.
You can choose either one.

[Q] What's the best ROM available?

Last month I sold my iPad and bought an AT&T Galaxy Tab and haven't regretted it one bit. I carefully followed the instructions on the "How to flash AT&T Tab to make calls page" (link below). Everything works great and I have no complaints but I am not really sure how current the ROM is that's I'm running (the one in the first post linked on the page below). I see here in the dev forum that their are several to choose from.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=847273
Any advice on the best one to use? Another consideration would be what (if any) advantage I would gain from upgrading and having to reload/setup everything again.
Thanks,
Richard
all functional roms (roto, modaco, overcome) are based on the same samsung rom (jmi), and are similar.
other roms, like cm-7, are not fully functional now.
the best difference is in the kernel:
roto are based on samsung file system and modaco and overcome on ext4 file system.
you have also a kernel that are overclocked (seems stable, but provably the life of the cpu was no than longer)....
Overcome hands down....
I find official KM2 to be the best for me.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
for me the best rom is modaco rom with 1.4ghz kernel.

Roto-JMI v2 is what I'm using and it is GREAT. I have a T-Mobile Tab and stock ROM was G-A-R-B-A-G-E!!!!!!! I've tried all of Roto's ROMs and no complaints, but by far for me JMI v2 is the best.
What I like about this ROM:
- Very fast webpage loading (Miren and Dolphin HD browsers)
- Very Smooth scrolling within the UI
- Battery lasts much longer
I will edit once I think of more Pro's.
What I don't like about this ROM:
- Extremely minor!!!!! I had to find .apk's for some apps that weren't showing up in the Marketplace, BUT I have everything I wanted and simply backed everything up (with Titanium Backup) so I'm good to go.
- AT&T U-Verse app
- Slingbox app (yes I paid $30 for this app originally)
Looking at the ROM that is available from the post below that I used, what ROM am I using, i.e. what is it commonly called here on XDA?

You can get your sling box back by re-installing the stock ATT Build.prop and clearing the cache on the Market app. Next time you open the market Slingbox will be there along with every other apk. PM me if you need the build.prop
To the OP, I am also having great success on my ATT Tab with the Roto JMI ROM. Everything and I mean everything is better!
So the link I posted uses the "Roto JMI ROM"?
Thanks,
Richard

I re-packaged the stock firmwares for safety and simplicity, to minimize the potential for fail which frustrates a lot of new users.
But, now with Overcome and Modoco you have the option to try a more modified firmware which may address some of the stock firmwares shortcomings at the expense of a little more installation complexity.
My recommendation is to start off with my firmware if you're new to flashing, then as you get more comfortable and read/learn from others experiences, try out the more customized firmwares to gain all the benefits they offer.

you're the creator of my first rom loaded in tab. you have maked a great work. thank's!
now, i'm on overcome (1.1.2) but is provably that the galaxyTab community needs your work in the near future, that the overcome creator is in other themes and no has time for continue working on it, and it seems that paulobrien is also in the same line... :/
have you planned to deodex your rom and make if flashable with CWM?. this was great!!
I'm new at all this but had good success updating me phone to SlimBean using only CWM (flashed three times). Unfortunately, they do not support my tablet listed in my signature below.
Does anyone know a stable replacement ROM/Kernel, etc for my tablet listed below that I could flash again using only CWM?
Will thank any good suggestions.
Thanks.

[Q] Some basic 101s from a new owner

ok, well I do own an EVO (Spint) that has been rooted and numerous mod's installed and feel comfortable around it (currently running c7 and loving it).
Now I have a new Galaxy S (7 inch) and looking to test some ROM's and wanted to confirm a few basic things b4 I jump in. It came with 2.2 and I am hearing about 2.3, even 3 on it, but is 3 around yet? Having the evo, the market has more items, launchers, etc. which I am assuming is due to the carrier/vendor so I am hoping some new mod's will make it more customizable!
It is rooted (used z4 from my readings, hope that was OK), have the normal stuff installed, but can I simply ROM manager full backup, then d/l some ROM's and play? Upon installing ClockWorkMod recovery it asked to confirm a phone model;
Galaxy S i9000 and Galaxy S i9000 (MTD). Now it's not a phone, there is no carrier, etc. so I am not sure what to select on that.
Lastly is similar to the above, but is the process of flashing, restoring, etc. the same as on the phone? I mean since it's so new, I am a bit concerned with bricking the thing, but since it's not a phone I don't think I need to worry as much.
Thanks to all replies as usual.
All your questions will be answered with a quick visit to the Dev forum. Each thread has a mini/full installation guide on the 1st post
Galaxy Tab came with 2.2 onboard...and if you ever register at Samsung's site, it is listed under smartphones...lot of customization options exist for the tab...
Overcome rom is the best rom out there for the GSM Tab...both Froyo and GB roms are there...GB still in beta though...Overcome comes with its own CWM...it also comes with detailed flashing instructions so no worries...
Z4root is fine...have that installed and it works as good as anything else...
Don't think rom manager has the correct Rom for this...the tab is P1000 or other variants and the ones you mentioned looks to be for the Galaxy S phones...
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA Premium App
I did continue my reading from last night and saw overcome seems to be the 'weapon of choice'.
I will start simple and register, then start to look at the flashing process and how it differs from the EVO regarding full backup (just in case), mod changes etc.
Looking forward to this new route to go down.
Thanks.

A good and simple ICS install

Hi there, I want to upgrade my SGS to ICS, seen some threads, read some but still I'm not too sure from where I should start, what should I load and what tutorial from here is the most usefull.
I would like someone to point me towards a simple, yet working tutorial on how to install ICS. Thanks!
Hey,
just check out the development section, look especially for teamhacksung ROM.
I did it the following way:
Base: SGS with latest stock-rom
0. Backup your data
1. Install CM7.1
therefor head over to cyanogenmod, a detailed description is given there. At a glance: install root-kernel, install cm7, do the wipes
2. just install the ics rom from teamhacksung or other via cwm-recovery as described in teamhacksung-thread and do the wipes.
Of course it's possible that something goes wrong, but I've tested already several new roms and nothing went wrong...
Can you post some download links for roms, flashes etc.?
Here is the link:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1398223

[Q] Going to flash to a safe rom on my Note GT-N7000 on 4.0.4 but i have questions

Hi Everyone
After waiting for a year now and it seems that Samsung didn't released any newer updates for my Note GT-N7000 at my country. I was hoping for them to release an update to prevent that "MMC_CAP_ERASE bug? that causes hardbrick" that i have been hearing around here..
But now i got tired of waiting and Now I want to try to root/flash to a safe custom rom, Since i am currently having some problems with my Note now. It's acting a little weird like apps not functioning properly and deleting a small MB file on Internal Memory it takes very long to get it deleted Annoying artifacts appearing during at Dark or Black scenes while watching a video. Using Earphones while watching a video the audio sometimes got muted itself then for a few seconds it resumes back with audio back on repeatedly.
I have only experience on rooting and flashing my Galaxy Tab GT-P1000 but i had a soft brick thanks to the person who posted misleading instructions that causes this to happen. But eventually i managed to recovered from the soft brick and successfully flashing to a JB custom rom
Yeah before you asked me "have you read this Important thread ? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360 " Yes I have already read everything on the first post by dr ketan at this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
Anyway, Here is my Information i found on my Note.
Model Number is GT-N7000.
Android Version 4.0.4 Stock ICS.
Baseband version N7000DXLR1.
Kernel Version 3.0.1.5-N7000DXLR5-CL968032
Build Number IMM76D.DXLR5
Here are my questions,
[Q Number 1]
I have already read everything on the first post by dr ketan. I notice there's so many of methods to root the Note. But I'm not sure which one is the safest and easiest method to Root and Flash Hopefully someone here is kind to guide me through the process since this is my first time rooting and flashing on a Note GT-N7000 running on Android 4.0.4 Stock ICS.
[Q Number 2]
There's tons of JB custom roms everywhere! I'm not sure which one is the best and popular one. I'm looking for a fast and stable Jellybean custom rom that are currently available for my Note GT-N7000.
I will be waiting and checking this thread regularly

The safest and easiest way to flash ROM and get ROOT at the same time is using Odin Mobile, which offers option for getting ROOT.
You can use Stock ROM LT4.
For most popular custom ROMs : Eybee1970, Team Union, Alliance, Sweet,
ThaiDai ROM for slim and mutillanguage, Glory ROM also for multilanguage with mods.
There are a lot of other good ROMs here, you have to read more to find out what suits better to your taste.

And best Rom threads and questions are simply against XDA policy, read the rules and you'll see.

Hello there
I'm really sorry if i just break some of the rules here. I wonder if it's okay for me to just follow the recommended method 1A by dr ketan ? Now i am in PhilZ thread i suppose i have to find my own Galaxy Note Kernel Version first right ? which is DXLR5 so i guess i have to download this kernel here http://www.mediafire.com/?c2jmfqnwajw8ei1 .PhilZ-cwm6-DXLR5-OLB-v3.99 Then flash it in the menu called Stock Recovery (VolumeUP+HOME+POWER button)
I found out that my Baseband version has a DXLR1 in there. Should i be worry on this ?
The PhilZ kernel file listed v3.99 there. my Kernel Version is 3.0.1.5-N7000DXLR5-CL968032, Example when i managed to flash that kernel. I guess that my Kernel Version will changed to like 3.9.9.9 am i right ? or it is not okay to just flash to latest updated kernel like v3.99 ?
I hope it's okay to just answer my newbie questions here. I need someone to help me and tell me whether if i did it right or wrong.
Thank you very much

No problem when you see :
- Baseband DXLR1
- Difference between 3.99 and 3.0.1.5-N7000DXLR5-CL968032.The first is the Philz own version, the second is the Samsung one.
It's normal.

1.As far as rooting method is concerned on said thread, all the methods are safe. there are pros and cons of different method and already mentioned on thread.
I do recommend 1A, as it will root device as well gives you protection from brick bug and without raising flash counter too. So in case you want to go that way, download LR5 philx kernel in zip version and flash from stock recovery.
2.See ROM selection is totally depends on own taste, you can never rely on others answer, but best way go through OP of custom ROM thread, read features mentioned, read some reviews/bugs and try it yourself. that's the only and best way.

First of all, Dr Ketan Thank you very much for helping me with this. I really appreciate your help Yeah i understand what you're trying to mean about that custom ROMs I will take a look at all of them later.
But now I want to see if i got it right again. I will flash it after you give me the final confirmation i need :victory:
1. Find my own stock Kernel build code DXLR5 then go to PhilZ thread and find PhilZ Kernel that listed my Kernel code which is PhilZ-cwm6-DXLR5-OLB-v3.99 then download it After that Connect a USB cable to the computer + Note then copy the PhilZ kernel and place at Root dir of External microSD card then turn off Galaxy Note, then hold VOLUME UP + HOME + POWER button for a few seconds to boot in Stock Recovery Menu then flash it at there. am i right ?
Last question here, Finding a Custom Rom that suit my needs might take awhile since i haven't read all of them yet. But i wonder if it's okay to stay in Stock ICS Android 4.0.4 + PhilZ Kernel ?

1.Yes, but remember you have to select zip version of kernel not tar
obviously there is nothing wrong to stay on stock with safe kernel till you couldn't find out best custom ROM for you.

Good News! i just flashed it and it works! I have SuperSU application installed. I really appreciate all your help that you have done dr ketan thank you very much. Now i have PhilZ CWM kernel. does it uses the same buttons to activate it like the stock recovery ? VOLUMEUP+HOME+POWER BUTTON,

Almost giving up now...

Ok I have a GT P1000 (belongs to a friend)...
AND ALL I WANT IS A DAMN CM10.1!!
No clear instructions how to go to CM10.1 from CM9
No clear instructions where to change from CWM to TWRP
No clear instructions on how to fix errors
No clear instructions on how to 'restock' either (There are like a plethora of "restock" ROMs and have no clue which one to flash when).
PLz people..I am not angry..just upset..can any1 help.. plz?
PS: I have tried flashing CM10.1 by Alroger/Cdesai and the Touchwiz 4.2.2 and all three give me Status 7. There is absolutely no way I can change the recovery or fix this error. Is this some MD5 checksums issue?
Don't multi post your problem.
It is so simple. Most instruction for CM10.1 ask you to restock, so just do it.
You were in sos_sifou's overcome thread. Use that. If you forgot where, see my signature.
1) You better don't go from cm9 to cm10 directly, for reasons I mentioned there in reply to you.
2) You don't need to change from CWM to TWRP, when you flash the new ROM, it comes with TWRP in it's kernel. P1000 does not have separate partition for recovery. It has to be included in the kernel.
3) not everyone encounters your error
4) any of the restock instruction will likely work. If you haven't even tried, why didn't you? Safest is to use overcome method.
your status 7 will go away with overcome method.
Hi guy
The dude speaks true but you might want a bit of hand holding.
Alterbridge, a genius contributor, wrote a ROM in gingerbread called the overcome ROM for the p1 version of the tab based on leaked Samsung code. His latest version was called kratos and was really quite amazing. The overcome ROM can be downloaded from mirrors that are provided regularly on the xda SG tab site. Find using search p1 overcome from xda.
Loading this leaked GB ROM is called restocking and brings you to a vanilla system with few problems. Most people use Odin to load it under windows or heimdall under Linux. Both are pretty easy. They do erase anything on the sdcard though, so be careful.
This provides a stable base from which to install ICS and jb versions mostly championed by humberos, sbradymobile and cdsai. The 10.0 version mostly works. 10.1 has a broken front camera for selfie fans to lament but recent improvements to the battery life provides redemption. I like 10.1.
10.2 is still a bit wobbly but works well enough and gives the cutting edge if you can handle it.
To progress you have to find overcome and Odin / heimdall. Flash of and follow the prompts. This will give you a rooted tab under gingerbread and cw recovery.
Entering recovery you can flash any of the 10.x ROMs and the gapps zip and experience the latest android versions. Really quite amazing. Use too manager to find the latest gapps zip and the 10.1 daily uploads.
Hope this helps, read lots of xda and Google cm 10.1 BBQ to find the latest stable stuff.
Happy exploring, follow the guides precisely on the first posts of a thread to get updates and current info and to avoid bricks. Good luck, it's really rewarding to follow these amazing folks and their work.

Actually, Kratos was before overcome 4.1
If not mistaken, the alphabetical released ends with K (kratos) was for 3.x series.
