Hi,
I'm interested in getting in Nexus One!
Not sure if I'll do for now, but it looks to fill my needs perfectly (Well, doesn't have a lot of internal memory, but still more than my Optimus One)!
The price looks fine, actually. The new phones are way too expensive, for me. Allright, questions before I purchase or so:
---
The speed: it seems the Nexus One is blazing fast with his 1 GHz processor, but at which point? My LG Optimus One (Okay, that's 600 MHz, normal) does lag quite often, and I have a lot of APPs installed (I use them all. Kept the more useful only). Will I experience slowdowns like this on the Nexus One, especially if I plan to install Cyanogenmod 7 ?
---
Next question, it's about his "unlocked" statut; I've been searching about this, but I can't find the exact answer of my question.. It does allow you to use any SIM card from any operator in it, but does that also mean I could use my Nexus One not to call? Basically, use it without calling, so that I wouldn't pay for this service?
---
Last questions are about Cyanogenmod and the stock firmware. Does all the Nexus One come with Android 2.2 installed, or others still have Android 2.1 ? I would like to install Cyanogenmod 7, and upgrade to Android 2.3.6 (I like the interface, for some reason, with the black notification bar. That sound dead-easy to install), but can I install both ? What should I do first, upgrade from 2.2 (or 2.1?) to 2.3.6 then install Cyanogenmod, or the reverse? Will that work?
Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it.
Q1. Imo the n1 is still quite snappy in comparison to the latest phones. Cm7 runs very well so do the miui based Roms. No need to worry about internal memory with a2sd. Some apps experience a little lag when cache is on sd, but think that is more dependant on sd card class. Still the best phone in its 2nd hand price range I reckon.

Thank you, this is good news!
I don't have the money to buy a 300/500$ phone (My max would be 200, I guess), I think the Nexus One would be just fine!
I anyone can answer my other questions, please let me know!

You don't need a sim card for the phone to function, if that's what you're asking.

You can install any PASSIMG you want, though some people have problems downgrading, but you can search for the version older fixes.
Just unlock it, install a custom recovery, then you can flash whatever rooted rom you wish.

Great!
If I don't use a SIM Card, are they setting and APPs (Contacts?) other than calling that will be disabled ?
Right now, my LG Optimus One smartphone is on a Koodo contract; so let's suppose I put my Optimus One SIM card in my Nexus, I'll stay with the same contract, and I'll still pay the same way I do normally?
In other words, a SIM card isn't required, but if I decide to use my Nexus to call, I can simply put my Koodo SIM card in my Nexus, and nothing should change, right (Except that I'm now using my Nexus to call, rather than my LG!) ?

Currently, the hardest thing to do seems to install and set-up the ADB console. I've checked guides to help me, anyways.
Hope you can understand me, I'm French!

Let's put this way. If you turn on the flight mode, all your apps in N1 will still work. You can also make call too even without a sim card or in flight mode if you have wifi and Voip app running.
I don't see why you need to pay more or less if you just simply plug in your sim card and use the N1.
Rooting and installing custom rom are not that difficult. All you need to read more XDA threads. For rooting, you can use some app to do it for you. All you need is just "one click". That's done. Then you can install rom manager to install custom recovery and roms. Good luck.

It's a waste of money to spend $200 on Nexus One.

I've read the whole thread, and people recommend to get an HTC Sensation or HTC Amaze; the problem, is that I'm in Quebec, and I'm trying to find used phones, for some models, it can be a challenge.
Actually, the minimum price of the HTC Sensation I found was 300$, while the HTC Amaze, 360$.
When I checked the SPECs of differents phones, the availibility in Quebec, and the price range, there are however 3 phones that caught my eye (No need for me to get the newest phone with Android 4.0 and a lot of new features for the price of 400$):
- HTC Incredible S ;
- HTC Desire ;
- HTC Nexus One ;
I've been looking for others phones, such as Motorolla Droid Pro, but many aren't availible here.
Considering that I spent like 175$ on a Creative ZEN Touch 2, I feel like paying about the same deal for a Nexus One wouldn't be a bad deal; what I like about it, it's his automatic unlocked statut.
If I still won't be happy with a Nexus One, what would you recommend, 200$ being the maximum price for me?
Now that google had announced officially that there wont be any future updates(ICS) for N1. U may need to pause n think a bit if u r specific abt OTA update. But the great techno devs are already doing an amazing work to bring ICS to n1. So that should not be much of an issue.
If u asking abt hardware specs, n1 is better or atleast equivalent to any mid range droids out there in the market. I bought mine 2 months back for 250$. I am happy n lovin it.
So ur $200 deal seems to be good

In that price range, as I wrote multiple times, HTC MyTouch 4G is so far superior to Nexus One, while being priced in the same range, that I wouldn't even think about considering N1. I have one, and I had N1 before it. No comparison whatsoever between the two.
The only warnings that should be put here:
1) MT4G has 2 types of screen, "good" one being much better than "bad" one. Good one is better than N1's AMOLED for me, "bad" one has color distortion when viewed from angle. Look for the good one.
2) MT4G has 2 types of ROM chip (eMMC), "good" and "bad" one. There was much hype on the forum, considering the "bad" one a "ticking bomb", advising not to root. I hope this hype is long over, and this "issue" is non-issue.
3) MT4G is not as easy to root as other phones. No 1-click-root is available for this phone on the latest OS, rooting requires downgrading it. Not a complicated procedure, and multiple guides exist.

I have my HTC Vogue Touch flashed to android... Just foud out I have a free upgrade from Sprint and thinking about the HTC Hero..
doing some research before I get it as I love customizing this stuff and there looks to be plenty of ROMs here...
my first question being: aside from apps2sd what is the main reason for booting these ROMs? It even looks like the camera doesn't work in many of them. (which surprised me considering the phone is droid - stock)..
second question: I can see the rooting guides but not how to flash the HERo to any of these ROMs.. or am I missing something here?
Thanks..

The Hero is still a worthy phone.
thanks for the advice..
an explanation as to why would be nice
and an answer to my other inquiries as well if possible..
i do love my hero but if i had an upgrade right now i wouldnt go to a "last gen" phone
evo is a step up from the hero in every spec and is 4G!!!!!
the samsung galaxy will be very comparable to the evo but seems a little faster on the processing side
most of these roms are 2.1 which is complete exept for a couple bugs here and there. The roms that are dev'ing are the 2.2 roms which needs to be made from the ground up.

the custom roms are faster/better than the sprint rom.
the camera works in all the roms as far as i know? there was a time when the camera didn't work because HTC were being Dbags and withholding the kernel source, but toast solved that problem. the only rom atm without camera AFAIK is the froyo dev build.

question 1. besides apps2sd the main reason for booting roms is looks and customization in my oppinion. you can change around the keyboard the lock screen the menu options even remove the terrible bloatware included on the phone. plus an upside is speed - remove the files eating all your battery life and take that battery life and put it to overclocking the cpu.
as for the camera i don't know what you are talking about. almost every rom i've installed has the camera working correctly. sometimes a file is removed to make the phone run faster and the camera doesn't work but most of the times the camera is fixed pretty fast.
question 2. rooting your phone gives you access to files on your phone otherwise not able to delete. i.e. bloatware. by rooting your phone you can remove these files or adjust them how you want. now the ROM is a customization of android x.x that you flash to your hero that otherpeople have customized themselves. like removing the bloatware for you or using a custom kernel to make your phone run faster. or just changing around the entire look of android.
The Hero is a fantastic phone and can do many things. i would say upgrade and don't look back. but if you want a snapdragon CPU get the Evo. which is also an awesome phone. (but quite a bit more expensive)

I see someone else posted about the camera..
Every single current rom we have, has a working camera. Aside from froyo 2.2, that hasnt been publicly released yet (it will soon though).
And rom currently up-to-date within the past month, should have everything working. You might run in to a few bugs, but most are user errors or can be simply fixed.
The hero is still a great phone with many months left in it. The Evo though is still the #1 choice, and i would get one if i could.
And person above me.. No you are not crazy. Should be in general section or Q & A

both of these statements are completely true.
the Hero is actually quite awesome, lots of potential in it still, and my guess is the 2.2 will run on it just swimmingly.
that being said... if you can get one cheap, do it! But frankly, if you have upgrade credit coming to you, use it on a newer gen phone... or I would anyway. sadly, there will be less ROMs/mods/community/whathaveyou for it, balanced by a sense of adventure exploring new territory with other ROMflash addicts and ROMcookers!

still a bit confused. probably will make more sense once I get the phone.
for instance i'm looking at this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583291
point me to another one if there is something better...
I assume I put the ROMs on the SD card (andboot folder maybe? thats what it was on my vogue) and going into recovery console to select the "flash update.zip" will wipe the phone and install the custom ROM?
also, where can I gain clarification on these new acronyms to me such as JIT?
I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually.. Afterall, I am a certified MS Server Admin and CCNA network admin.. hhaha
thanks for your help. great community here. hopefully i'll be sticking around.

that guide is old.
THIS ONE
will work for 2.1 which is what the hero has now.
you can google JIT. google google google. all the questions have been answered at some point or another, its better to read someone's post than make a new post about the same thing thousands of other people have already asked about.
Ok found it. At first all I got were links to roms with JIT on it.
So after rooting, I basically get back into the recovery console and select flash from zip sdcard? Heck of alot easier than the Vogue I tell you that...
Thanks for the link
Another edit: Do the custom roms have multiple home page screens you can scroll to? On my vogue 1.6 droid I have like 5 home screens I can put shortcuts on. I just watched a HTC hero video on sprint and on the customizing video it didn't look like that was there.
I'm not saying the Hero isn't a good phone.. I'm saying if you have an upgrade, get the Evo or you'll be upset later. The phone is so much faster... 4g.. double cameras..big screen...
Bad better life, and it's a brick. I wouldn't use an upgrade on an old gen phone.
I just become a Sprint Preferred or whatever.. by having a plan over $70 and paying on time for 6 months.. I get my free upgrade in February. I definitely won't even consider the Evo.. I'll be looking at the next big thing.

there are 7 screens you can put apps and widgets on. 1 home then 3 to the left and right.
Remember the movie Mad Max? Or was it the Road Warrior? It doesn't matter. The quote is still valid.
Speed is a question of money. How fast can you afford to go?
If you can afford it, get the Evo. If you want a cheaper, yet still awe phone, get the Hero. Then use your savings for a bigger SDHC card and Bluetooth headphones and other coolness.
I agree that the phone has a lot left in it, but a lot of devs from several phones have jumped shipped to the Evo. I'm sticking with my Hero for another year atleast, unless a real good deal comes up.
If you want to save money I would get ther Hero as it it a lot cheaper than the Evo and you will also save the $10 extra a month. That and the Evo is too damn big. To me it was uncomfortable to hold and use with one hand.
Not only can you flash /install new roms, but with a little research you can mod the rom your self and theme it how you want. Also wireless tether is awesome and the Overclocking and Undervolting is making the phone better and faster.
Ok so I spent a few days trolling.
Looks like I'm going to have to flash the old RUU since I did the 2.1 update, then follow guide, then the custom ROM.
Question though, I'm stuck on picking one: Some are very nicely featured but I don't like the default look on any of them or the themes available in a 2nd/3rd post of the ROMs thread; generically speaking, is any themes compatible with any ROM? For instance, the Cyanogen mods you can Google to dark corners of the internet...
I found one on Craig's List and my girlfriend desperately needs a new phone. I plan on sticking to stock OS and not rooting or customizing it because it's for her and I don't want to risk bricking her.
I just want to know, how reliable is this phone?
Personally, this is my last Samsung phone. So... I wouldn't recommend it.

I got a Captivate for my gf and she loves it, but the stock OS pissed her off due to lagging and bloatware.
We installed Cognition 2.3b8 which was very easy and now she really loves it as her daily driver. All you do is put an update.zip for Clockwork on the root of SD. Reboot into oem recovery, reinstall packages twice to get to Clockwork, then wipe data and flash Cognition. Couldn't be easier.
Honestly, if you can find a Nexus One for AT&T (if you have AT&T the T-mobile version will be Edge only!! You need an AT&T Nexus One) I think that's your best bet, but with a little bit of modding and care the Captivate is a great phone. My gf LOVES the giant screen and beautiful display.
That said, the more I learn about it the more pissed off I am with Samsung. Different revisions, ODIN, Kies, Download Mode, etc. Rooting this thing is way more complicated than it needs to be. I'm running a MT4G and SOOOO glad I didn't buy the Vibrant. Shudder...
The only problem I've ever had with my cappy is the GPS, which, after reading the GPS fixes thread has been absolutely perfect.
To me this is the perfect phone. Fast, reliable, pretty. I don't even want anything faster anymore. If phones peaked in speed right now and started focusing strictly on battery life (I get about 1.5-2 days right now, I'd like to get 3-5), I'd be perfectly happy with that.
Craig's List? Buyer beware!
Here is where I am at:
This phone is probably not the best choice if you are planning on giving it to your wife without a custom ROM. If you plan on giving it to you wife with a ROM it is a good choice regardless of what ROM you choose however it is better if you use one that is as close to stock as possible: cognition, perception, or Andromeda (1.00).

I've got several great phones off CL. Do your due diligence as a buyer and you'll be just fine.
If you can get it for a decent price, then go for it.
Here's a simple pro & con list:
Pros
-Super AMOLED screen makes pictures and videos gorgeous
-1 GHz Processor that can be overclocked to 1.28GHz (stable) and undervolted to improve battery performance
-The xda devs are constantly providing the Captivate support that Samsung has failed to give us.
-Did i mention the Super AMOLED screen? Yes, yes I did.
-Swype makes texting a lot more fun to type on the phone once you get past the 1-minute learning curve
Cons
-Developed by Samsung and so the customer support for the phone is terrible
(see: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=913045)
-The stock AT&T Rom is filled with bloatware that takes up space and attempts to get you to spend more money on AT&T services.
-AT&T has disabled the ability to sideload apps (install apps from outside of the market) on the stock ROM, and so you won't be able to install third-party apps if/when you come across them.
-No official 2.2 froyo release from Samsung, despite promises from them as well as AT&T to have it released by the end of 2010 (this is when the store rep told me to expect the update when i bought my phone. derp).
-Some GPS Issues
Conclusion based on my personal opinion.
Overall, I love this phone and I'm glad I chose it over the iPhone 4 due to the ridiculous customization available. However, if not for the xda devs creating amazing custom ROMs, I would have probably returned it for the original Jesus phone.
My advice? Get the phone, pick out a launcher from the market (LauncherPro, ADW Launcher, or for the minimalist: Zeam) and grab handcent while you're at it. Then give her the phone and she should be happy with it.
More advice? Sure. Root the phone, flash Cog 3.02 onto it with the firebird 2/Glitterball kernel and JK4 modem.
Sorry if this post seems a bit jumbled and scattered. I'm currently doing about 4 different things at once and posting from my Computer Class at the local community college haha
Dont' buy it. GPS problems, shutdown issues, and, based on the general lack of reliability so far, probably more issues to come as the phone ages. If it weren't for the beautiful display and the custom ROMs here on xda I'd have little good to say about my phone. Since you don't plan on modifications the screen is really all you'd get. Does that screen outweigh the hardware problems I've noted?

Let me rephrase that. Custom ROMs are more complicated than they need to be. I've used SOC on my MT3G, works well. It's ODIN, Kies and manually flashing modems and kernels that annoys me. I've flashed radios and roms on my mt3g and I'm comfortable with fastboot and adb so I'm not a total noob. HTC just seems simpler to me, but maybe that's because I'm used to it.
The only beef I have had with this phone is the GPS issue. otherwise it's a great phone. Beautiful screen, sleek design and fast with a good ROM such as Cognition.
I've decided I'm either going to get her a Nokia N900 or an iPhone (some variation). I can't put a phone in her hands with such a gamble on the GPS (There's no guarantee the fix works and no way to identify which Captivates will work and won't work). Especially since this phone is purchased used and won't have a warranty on it.
I wish her sister would make up her mind about AT&T. If she decided to stay with AT&T I could just buy her something new. If she decided to leave AT&T, I could buy her a new Android device with another carrier.

I can tell you from experience, **** AT&T! T-mobile has buy one get one free for MT4G right now, I have no clue why on earth you would want to stay with AT&T.
Seriously, I have been with T-mobile for 5 years and I'm in love with their service. Every time I call I get an AMERICAN rep on the phone in 5 mins tops.

This is a very fair and accurate assessment.
Absolutely get this phone if you're comfortable rooting the phone and installing custom ROMs, launchers, etc. The phone will run markedly better than stock and will be a dream to use.
If you're not technically inclined, and need rely on $am$ung and AT$T for your firmware updates, get a different android phone. Updates are either never coming or will be over half a year behind and quite possibly bugged and broken even if you do get them.

I feel like I should mention that I'm now using Exists Suckerpunch kernel and it's... Well... Amazing. OC/UV support with speedmod's battery battery tweaks is pretty much the best thing ever. And exists (pretty cool guy, eh made my favorite kernel ever and doesn't afraid of anything) updates so often I barely have time to find and complain about any bugs that happen to slip past.
This phone is quite captivating indeed.

Me too. That said out of the box the Captivate is a very frustrating phone to use. The GPS is spotty and You won't have full access to it's super fast Gee Bees unless you install a custom ROM.
I ended up getting her an iPhone. I know guys, I know.
To be honest, I didn't feel comfortable giving her a phone with spotty GPS as this will be her primary GPS unit.
Reading the custom rod and GPS thread gave me no assurance that doing the fix and rooting with a custom rom would fix the issue.
I have enough problems dealing with my MyTouch 4g that you may see me on a Bionic or iPhone with Verizon anyway.
But thanks for the advice. I may root and mod her sisters Captivate to score points because I heard she has had for warranty replacements lol.

I've been keeping my eyes open for an iPhone4 for my gf as well for the same reasons you mentioned. There's also an AT&T iteration of the Evo coming soon. That might be a good device for her.
Phateless said:
Shudder...

Really??? Rooting this is as easy as switching off your phone and rebooting. With all the easy stuff available right here in this forum and tons on the net... it is a breeze to root and flash a custom ROM.
My samsung galaxy S is incredibly slow, I can't upgrade it via Kies, and I am scared to flash b/c of the faulty SD cards (my phone resets / freezes just when updating apps for god sakes)
Does anyone know if the Atrix will be able to be flashed and stuff? I heard about a locked bootloader
can anyone confirm ?
To get acquainted with the flashing process just start by reflashing the same rom as you're currently running now.
If you're afraid now while having a crappy sgs what makes you think you won't be while flashing your brand new atrix?
If I had the cash i would change phone every 6 months. I dig the atrix concept but i think it is to soon. Its still to weird.
I do a monthly flash of my sgs and am still happy with it. If you take the plunge and flash yours too i know you'll be happy too.
Have fun with the stock roms.
Motorola devices now have locked bootloaders and do not allow custom ROMs.
The Droid 1 and Droid 2 in Europe were subject to such locks and no homebrew roms have been made.
Also, you think samsung wont come out with a better handset than motorola? Samsung are going to relase their dual core orion and thats what im waiting for. Forget tegra.
This is kinda like cutting a whole leg because you have a log toe-nail and can't fit your shoe...
First, you should check out why Kies prevent you from upgrading. Issue with driver? Usb (Or usb Drivers)? Hardwaire issue with the computer you're using? if you can, try installing kies on a clean system and see if this resolve the issue.
As for custom rom, Odin only need the drivers for Download mode and then you'll be able to install clockworkmod recovery and flash from a zip file. Only need Recovery 2e prior to install it (or another compatible kernel flashed trough odin).
And motorola is known to be locked :|
The SGS is a very good phone, if you are having issues then you likely should look into following some of the advice on this thread.
That being said, i had a live demo of the atrix at my store and.... **** IS IT NICE! i am definately thinking of switching phones, it is a LOT faster, has a HUGE battery, better resolution on the screen (not LED tho) and you can REALLY multitask on it. Plus you can plug it into your TV and use it as a computer, multitasking with multiple videos running, games, you name it. the things a beast!
The one problem i found was it got pretty hot after only about 20 minutes of use. the rep said they were working on it, not sure how you can fix that other than turning down the power. Given the choice between either phone tho, the atrix wins. Its just got more power.
the only ones that really had faulty sd cards were the i9000m' is that your phone if not i would flash doc's js3 or jpy
and speedmod or vodoo kernel
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=883820
Seems if you are having problems then you should take the phone back, simple as that. My phone is superfast at everything and has no issues to speak of. Custom roms make it so much faster along with lagfixes and kernels.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Simple answer is no.
There are rumours that the Motorola Atrix suffers from a power management issue that is hardware related.
Long answer, as others have said, get to know the SGS and don't be scared of rooting it and using a custom ROM.
It is a very good phone, it's just a shame that developers have had to fix the problems Samsung couldn't be bothered with.
Motorola use what is known as an 'e-fuse' and that has to be disabled before the phone can use custom kernels & ROMs.
If you really want an Atrix, wait for it to hit the market and see what users report.
I get the feeling that Manufacturers are rushing phones to the market because the competition with Android phones is rapildy growing.
This will mean that more phones with issues will surface and I for one will not rush out to replace my SGS.

Well because of the faulty SD card issue on SGS -- mine is one of them. If I flash and stuff the re-writing to the SD card is what causes it, so I almost KNOW my phone will brick because it's faulty to begin with. I don't think the Motorolla phone will be like this (in fact most phones aren't)

Unfortunately I have an i9000m phone
which is why I want to switch
I'm thinking of selling it for like $400 then just paying the remainder in cash when the Atrix comes out
I KNOW the SGS is a good phone, don't get me wrong, but the i9000m is a piece of sh!t that will inevitably die on me ( i dont have the patience to wait months for a replacement )
I just need something that flies, I don't care about flashing roms because the Atrix will be faster than any SGS anyways. I only wanted to flash the SGS because mine is ridiculously slow, but if I flash it, I will destroy the phone probably because of the faulty SD card.
Have you tried to format the sd-cards? And i do mean the stock galaxy way. Backup all necessary files to your computer and just wipe them clean. I have had some instability problems in the past and this resolved it andb by the way the sgs is (in my opinion) as unbrickable as it gets. I have fcuked mine up

Hello everyone. I was planning to buy a used HTC Nexus One but I read about all the problems it has and had second thoughts. I had researched and found the following:
*To solve the broken power button- Download "Any unlock" from Google play
*To solve the inactive screen during calls- Download "Call Delay Patch" from Google play (can someone please verify this?)
I have also read about :
(i) camera not working(I saw a topic about clearing the camera's data which worked for some ppl and didn't work for other ppl)
(ii) X- screen problem(I have no knowledge about this) ,and
(iii) Wifi not connecting(I read about using "wifi fix" but not sure if it fixes this)
which are the problems that I couldn't find a solution to.
All of the above is considering it's on 2.3.6 official.
Basically I want to buy a N1 after selling my Samsung Galaxy Ace but I'll only do that if I have a solution to the major problems (such as the wifi and call problem) the N1 has. Is it worth it? Thank you

Well, you are kinda late on the N1 bandwagon aren't you mate? All things said and done, the N1 is a great, unique phone. I've had it for the past 3 years and it has never given me any problems. If you plan on sticking to the stock 2.3.6 ROM, you will not encounter any problems other than maybe the power button problem ( which if you are lucky/careful you might not have to face)
There are no problems with WiFi or Calls ( I think these are problems faced by users who have gone the Custom ROM route and have put a heavily modded JB or ICS ROM on their phones). If you were to flash, say stable CM 7.2, then you will rarely come across any such issues.
They don't make 'em like these anymore
Cheers

I have two N1.
One is stock (GB 2.3.6) The other (JB Rom) is my backup and toy for taking advantage of the great work of the dev.
None of them have the issues you mention.
I enjoyed very much this phone until I got the Galaxy Nexus.
I intend to keep my N1 backup for the foreseeable future (I mean my future).
Yes, for me, it is a keeper.

I have two N1 too. One is AOKP ICS as my daily driver and the other is JB CM 10. Indeed, I just bought a brand new N1 (got a good deal) and upgraded to AOKP ICS and gave to my father to use. I like the N1 because it fits nicely in the pocket and reasonable size.

Oh so you haven't had any of the problems I mentioned above? That's my only concern with buying the N1.
Again, as long as it's stock or a stable Custom ROM, no need to worry about any problems. It's a reliable phone.
Okay thanks. Btw on the N1 wiki it says super one click works only up till 2.3.3 . So if the android version is 2.3.6 i'll have to root it without using Super one click?
either u can downgrade it to 2.3.3 n root or else try www.unlockroot.com
but a simple solution is to unlock the bootloader...

Yea, actually, the simplest one is to unlock the boot loader and flash the su.zip file to gain root access. There are numerous tutorials on the web which let you do that.
To summarize, the steps would be:
a) Unlock bootloader
b) Flash the recovery image. (CWM or AmonRA)
c) Copy the su.zip onto the SD card.
d) Reboot into recovery to flash that zip file and voila, root access.
OKay thanks a lot !
I'm using a 3 year old nexus one I bought on these forums over 7 months ago. It looks really beat up but has never needed any repairs including the power button. I've had stock 2.3.6 then cm7 then 4.1 for a couple months then cm7 again. It's always been pretty good. Only issue is occasional digitizer going nuts which is common but only a minor annoyance.

My only experience with Android thus far has been with the Samsung Galaxy S and S2. I am extremely excited about the One, and I have two important questions that I have not been able to gain clarity on that are factoring into some decisions. I appreciate any owners of the One -- and any past or current HTC owners in general -- that can give me insight.
1. My GS2 has 16GB internal storage, and I have a 16GB external SD card. Both storage spaces are pretty much maxed out, with about 30 apps and pictures, video and music. My question is: What is the storage "footprint" of the base rom and apps of the One? How much space is available once basic rom/apps are installed? This will factor into my decision whether to go with the 32GB or 64 GB version (I'm with AT&T).
2. I've always been able to root and customize my Samsung phones fairly easily. Customs roms, themes, kernels, nandroid backups, titanium backups, etc., have always been smooth and simple. Is it the same experience on HTC and the One? I've been doing a lot of reading on the forums and online over the last few weeks, and it seems a bit more complicated. (I'm still not clear as to what can and cannot be done without S-OFF, for example.) As I'm on AT&T and would be getting an AT&T One, I'm wondering how easily this phone will be rooted. Does it need to go through HTCDev site? Are AT&T phones locked out of this process? If yes, is there typically a way around this? I really want the flexibility of custom roms/kernels, which have made an immense difference in my past experience with Samsung phones. Any and all clarity on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your help!

1. 26GB is available
2. I will let someone else answer this more accurately as I have zero experience with HTC devices.
I can tell u this much...I've owned the s2 and s3...I tried the one x last year when it came out and went back to the s3 because of the multitasking issues and the bootloader being locked...but I saw the one and fell in love...so I sold my s3 and bought a one x to "experiment" with so to speak...I will admit they are both very different phones the HTC vs samsungs...with the Samsung it was stupidly easy to go flash crazy right from the phone with roms and kernels etc...the HTC I noticed is a different story...things (at least on the att version) are more locked down...now mind u I myself am still learning how to work the developmental side of Htc but with the proper tutorials I've managed to root/unlock the bootloader and soff the one x.....but it will take time to learn one how to do this with the HTC one, but there are some programs that developers write that make it more noob proof...but short answer is no the HTC in my opinion is not as easy to flash about like the Samsung s series phone from my experience...
Plus from what I saw there are more Rom/kernel options for the Samsung...but the few I've tried on my one x are good solid roms...I'm using viper on my one x and I love it...really hope they make a Rom for the one

Hi mate it is very easy to root I've got htc one rooting was a easy but not as easy as galaxy s3 there's a tool on xda to root there's some nice roms already
Yeah as previousl stated there is around 26-27GB storage space. Personally, I found this easier than my Galaxy S2 to root, but that may have been because I was new to Android at the time and my computer always hated Odin... You'd have to unlock bootloader with HTC-Dev and void your warranty unless S-Off can be gained. With S-ON, you can still flash roms and everything, so it's no issue. It isn't like the Tegra HTC One X where the boot.img has to be flashed in fastboot after flashing the rom.
I had the S3 before and must say that was a bit easier to root than having to use the official HTCdev.com method. And it could be cleanly unrooted, which it not possible with the One (can only be re-locked). But at least the latter makes it more or less impossible to hard brick your One. When considering buying the AT&T version, keep an eye on the discussion whether it is possible to S-On the device at all: https://twitter.com/ste1164/status/321554709892694016
Being currently on renovate ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2202696) I am quite content already, though custom ROMs are still fresh at the moment. CyanogenMod however will still take awhile to be released.
Ok so that's one thing tha confuses me with the bootloader being locked...now if it's locked we can still root and flash roms? But not kernels? Or am I wrong?

1. I figure after the att bloat is added it'll have a little over 25gb of space on the 32.
2. I have very rarely been an early adopter of handsets. Either do to contracts or availability I usually buy a few months after release. If there's no root ability at that time I wait and use the phone till it happens, it always happens. This gives me time to see it there are any defects and need to swap it out. With the popularity of the One I'd surprised if it took till June to get s-off.
This is the 1st time I've preordered.

If your bootloader is locked, you can't flash anything. If you do wish to flash stuff, you have to unlock your bootloader using the official htc website (however, do check your phone on issues before doing that because unlocking MIGHT void your warranty).
Even if you've unlocked your bootloader, you still can't do a lot: you first have to flash a custom recovery using fastboot. After you've done that you are good to go.
However!! Boot images can't be flashed using recovery, those have to be done using fastboot. For me this is the only downside of not having s-off. S-off may come however, most snapdragon devices got it (not official ofcourse ) also, I've heard people say that there is a way to flash boot images without the need of a computer on the HTC One.. not sure if this is true though

I really want the flexibility of custom roms/kernels, which have made an immense difference in my past experience with Samsung phones. Any and all clarity on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Very very easy to do. HTC unlock, flash custom recovery, flash supersu, flash boot.img, flash custom rom. Done.
If you need a bit of help with this there is a thread dedicated to this in the development section.
We might have a problem since AT&T won't allow the bootloader to be unlocked through HTC Dev. But I'd imagine someone would get the bootloader unlocked within a month or two.
