Im planing to get incredible s but is locked to yes optus (australia).
I have done a quick research. But still couldnt find any tool to unlock it.
Does flashing custom rom unlock the sim? what about bootloader unlock? and s-off? hboot?
what about this radio thinggy ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1129014 )
Is there a free way to remove the sim lock?
thanks in advance
Nope, you can't unlock sim for free. Best bet is to look on ebay for sellers who will sell sim unlock for $4-5. Here is one for $5.99:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/HTC-SENSATION-4G-WILDFIRE-S-INCREDIBLE-S-VIRGIN-Canada-Unlock-Code-/320790616890?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ab09c5b3a
Otherwise the only way to get it is:
1) Buy the code from others who manged to get the algorithm from the OEM (that's the sellers you see on ebay and places like cellunlock.net)
2) you need to figure the algorithm for the unlock sequence that is dependent on the base IMEI, so you would have to spend hours and hours of hacking if you even want to try it.
3) buy an "unlock box" that some technicians/hackers use to unlock handsets, but this is much more expensive and costs several hundreds in US $.
You don't loose the sim unlock. Once you do it the first time, it's permanently unlocked forever unless you turn it in for a new one or something. Flashing RUU, roms won't make it lose it.
If your using the phone with a provider that uses the Optus network you don't need to worry about unlocking it, I'm using an Optus sourced phone on Live Connected and it works fine I have not unlocked anything.
I'm planning to flash a custom ROM, but am currently using the phone with the stock ROM that it came with from Optus.

Its locked to optus but the reason you can use the liveconnected sim is because they are an optus reseller, along with Amaysim, Apex, Boost, Dodo, Exetel, Pennysim, Primus, Savvytel, Soul, Startel and TPG. All of these companies sim cards should work in your phone. Virgin, although using the optus network is different I believe, as it is a wholesaler.

Let me try;
Root(ing) - (Gaining) Administrator / Full access of the Android Operating System
Unlock(ing) - (Enabling) phone to accept not just the SIM card from its original designated network (T-Mobile US - example).
Test Root by running su on term emulator.
Test Unlock by inserting a different SIM card

Thanks Guys,
So, Rooting does automatically unlock the G1?
I purchased a G1 on ebay, and apparently, it is unlocked, but it looks like the original 1.6 is still there. So I am wondering how that is done.
Doesn't really matter anyways, I am going to root it when it gets here.
Heeter
You can unlock G1 on 1.6, that is what I did with my G1 from T-Mobile. Once unlocked, it stay unlocked.
Unlocking has nothing to do with rooting your G1. Rooting give you administrative privilage so you can do what you want on the phone.
So, BA.
How did you unlock it?
Heeter
Got the unlock code FREE from T-Mobile. Basically, call them up and requested the unlock code. After a certain time T-Mobile will give you the unlock code (when you requested) if you needed to unlock your G1 when you go on a trip (that required you to use the other network) to different place (IE: other country). That is what I did.
In your case, if you are not the original owner of the G1 with the T-Mobile account, and the G1 is not unlocked. You'll probably have to pay for the unlock code. My brother pass me down the G1, so that what we did.
Awesome, thanks for explaination, BA

Rooting does not unlock your phone. Nor does it work the other way around, they are completely separate.
The only way to get the unlock code free is to get it from T-mobile, which they will really only give you if you got your phone from them. You can use virgin mobile without unlocking.
advice please

the phone belongs to my brother but he was told that he will have to pay £15 to get unlock code from tmobile.
if i buy unlock code from e.g. ebay will the phone stay sim unlocked even if i upgrade/downgrade operating system?
also - after sim unlock- will g1 be able to access data from other networks at registration stage (just after booting)?

They can give it free, but it depends on circumstances.

Yes & yes, the network lock has nothing to do with the OS.
I looked around for a bit when I first got my UK G1 a few days ago trying to figure out the same question.
Unlocking and rooting are completely separate. There is no way to unlock your phone by rooting it or installing software hacks or mods. Also, once you unlock your phone using a code from TMB or eBay, etc. it will ALWAYS stay unlocked, no matter what you do in terms of rooting, installing custom ROMs, etc.
I just paid £3.85 for an unlock code from eBay instead. I got it within a few minutes and it worked immediately. Now I'm using it with my Orange SIM card without any problems. I would have phoned T-Mobile up but I'm not the original owner of the phone and I didn't want to hassle the original owner with it, since he had already given me the phone for free. So paying a few quid for an unlock code didn't really bother me.
Wow, I went a bit off-topic there, lol

I've used cellunlock.net to unlock my Incredible S.
BTW, if you are interested - I am selling my unlocked (originally Bell branded) IS. I'm currently using it on Fido!
I realize it's not what you're asking, but just so everyone knows, if you buy a phone from the same carrier you have service with then legally they have to unlock the phone for you if you request it directly.
I have done so before with phones on ATT & TMobile and never had to pay or had any issues doing so. I just called them up and explained that I wanted my phone unlocked and they did so.

I'm not sure the legal implications are the same between US and Canada. Also, I'm not sure that carriers will give you the code immediately. Some of them will ask you to wait for some time or expect that you are a current customer before giving you the code.

Yes, Canadian carriers generally require a minimum of 30 days service before they will unlock a phone. Plus they charge $50 (or more) for the unlock.

Can someone tell me if I unlock a carrier Locked IS online and after Flashing custom Roms, will it ReLock again or it would remain like a factory unlocked set?

No flashing a custom Rom will not undo a SIM unlock.
I was wondering if someone could advise me on the ability to use a different sim chip while traveling to another country.
Is it true that while my phone is s–off through the use of the revolutionary tool, that I still won't be able to use a different sim chip with this phone until I unlock it with one of those xtc-clips?
I just want be sure before I think about purchasing one of those clips for +$80.
Thanks

You can also just ask your carrier for the unlock code if it is a branded phone. Otherwise ou could use one of the pay services and purchase an unlock code for less than the cost of the XTC Clip

Just want to be sure I'm understanding you correctly.
I am with Virgin mobile in Ottawa, Ontario. I plan to use a different sim chip now that I am in Peru for a couple of months. Once I put in this Sim it asks me for a PIN to unlock the sim. Who provides me with that pin? Virgin mobile of Ontario or the sim provider in Peru?
Sorry I usually just purchase a cheap prepaid phone whenever I travel abroad but would love to be able to use my htc here in Lima. I appreciate the help.

if you bought it branded from say virgin, it will most likely be locked so only their sim cards work in it. if you buy a cheap sim card and put it in it will say enter unlock code or some ****. that means its locked. usually carriers (australia anyway) say if you have recharged more then 80 dollars or been with them for like 6 months they can unlock it for free.

First I would check with Virgin Mobile and see if they will give you an unlock code. If not, then you would need to visit one of the pay for sites and purchase an unlock code.
Hey everyone,
I recently bought a HD2 for flashing fun, then I realized it was locked to one of the telcos that I don't use.
I just wondered if an app exists like on some other phones to remove the sim lock. Or flashing a file or debranded rom will do it.
Thanks so much

I don't believe there is a program or app that you can use you to SIM unlock your device.
You need a IMEI code to unlock it. Search the internet for a company that does it and compare prices, usually costs between $10 -$25
I used this company over a year ago to unlock a AT&T phone that I bought so I could switch it to TMobile, which was the service that I had.
They sell you the IMEI unlock code and then you insert the new carriers SIM card or one from an already activated device, restart the phone and enter the IMEI code. The new service has to be a GSM network for it to work. You might have to setup your APN to get internet working properly.
This is the company that I used and this is the link for the HD2.

Here's another one that does it.
