This is just a thought, since I dont know exactly how it works but here it goes. Since LTE users on the pta APN get throttled and then switch to HSPA+ speeds APN. Wouldnt it work the other way. When your billing cycle starts over, stay on the HSPA+ to get the text from at&t about reaching the top 5%. Once you are throttled, then you change to the pta APN or am I just way off?
They can't throttle hspa. Only LTE. Thus I use hspa most of the time and swap to LTE for big burst speeds.

Can you give a how-to for how to switch between LTE and hspa? is there a widget or toggle or do you have to go into the settings?
Have to manually swap the apn. LTE drops down to hspa easily, but going back to LTE always requires a reboot for me.

What APN do you use for HSPA?
There are 3-4 threads about it...

ATT can throttle on the HSPA+ APN
I live in a non LTE area and I got the threatening message about being in the top 5% of data users. But have yet to be throttled. And that while using an EVO 3d.
Sent from my HTC Vivid™, an 4G LTE smartphone using XDA premium
Yeah they can throttle HSPA+ now. My data just got throttled 3 days ago so I swapped the APN from LTE to HSPA+ and my speed is still 0.21 mbps

Not sure if this helps anyone.. But here is what i do.
I live in a Non-LTE area, but i run the LTE apn until i get the annoying warning message. After i get that then i switch to the MEdiaNet apn and use it till my billing cycle is up. I have used over 13gb this billing cycle and have 4 more days left. but no throttle.
The fun is over for us att people I just got throttled after 2gb of use and now matter what apn I use I am only getting .15 down. I am miserable.
I switch from the H+ the LTE and the PTA apn and usually one of them will give me normal speeds.

hello i have a question
im ordering a htc vivid. i currently have a htc inspire
when i recieve it can i just switch my inspire sim card and put it in the vivid and it will work while the vivid sim card would work in the inspire?
thanks
First of all what carrier are you with ? Any others, you are fine. (Vivid needs to be UNLOCK).
With ATT, you are better off getting a new SIM that is LTE ready (Regardless if your area has LTE signal or not) - In which will of course work on Inspire & Vivid - That's just my opinion - You can still use your old sim card if you decide to do nothing. You'll always get HSPA+ signal only.
Not to hate on the above post but you dont need a New sim I've been using the same sim since my inspire the only thing is you need to do is switch your plan to LTE that's the only thing that needs to be changed

I have att.I'm not trying to switch plans or anything.I'm fine with my network and signals I have now I just want to know if after I'm done setting up the HTC vivid with the sim card that comes with it it will work when I switch sim cards

The LTE similar is fancy though. But no you don't need one unless your in an LTE city.
I dont think LTE cost more. Just easier to go over your data cap. I don't know. Though. I've been on the same contract for years and years. So long I get an upgrade every year.

Retail stores will give you one. Corporate stores will probably charge you. All they do is convert your current data plan to an equivalent plan that's coded LTE in their system. As far as i know this is what gives you access to the pta APN that allows you to use LTE
Couldn't you just go to APN settings and create an APN?
Sent from my HTC Inspire 4G using xda premium
I did the same thing (switched from Inspire to Vivid). You will need to make sure you do have an LTE approved SIM. It shouldn't cost you a dime to do. If your SIM is recent odds are you are fine.
I did have to call and have them check the settings on their side. I was not getting LTE and I live in an LTE area. So a 10min phone call fixed it.

If you have unlimited data and want to keep it you are going to need to upgrade to the lte sim.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1455702&page=1
If you aren't on unlimited then I don't think it will matter. You can run with the sim from your inspire.
Dear lord quit trying to confuse the op, the hspa sim and the LTE sim are the same if you got a new sim when you got your inspire which you pretty much had to , if you aren't in an LTE area don't worry about switching your plan , if you are you can make a two min phone call and they will provision your current data to LTE it doesn't matter if its unlimited or not you will still keep unlimited
....and boom goes the dynamite....

Have any of you guys ever got LTE signal on your raiders?
Ive had this phone for 3 months and i still havent ever seen the LTE symbol next to the reception bar...just 4G at most.
I live in Markham and the rogers map says its LTE covered but still..
Before I switched to chatr I definitely was able to use LTE. Mega fast, too! Faster than my bell fibe home internet lol.. I'm wondering if u have an LTE sim or not..? Did you get the sim new with the raider or was it from another phone?

You also need an LTE-ready plan, i.e., not all their data plans are LTE capable.

I'm on Bell with my Raider and I get LTE signal in strange areas. The coverage maps lie, Bell or Rogers. I work on the east end of downtown (Regent Park area) and sometimes I get LTE signal but most of the time it's HSPDA+. The LTE speeds are nuts but it drains battery much faster.
I live in Markham and I've never gotten LTE signal anywhere north of the 401.
All Bell plans are eligible for LTE speeds but you need to have an LTE sim.
So I'm in LA inside where I'm at i get three bars of LTE and full bars of 3G since the 3G is stronger it keeps me in 3G for the most part unless i do a profile update then it puts me at 4G for 5 minutes before kicking me back down. So the question is, is there a way to force LTE?

The bars do not represent EVDO (3G) or LTE (4G), they represent 1X Voice on the HTC One. If you want to know the actual signal strength of your 3G and 4G go to settings/About Phone/Network.
My guess is that the LTE is borderline in the building and therefore it goes back and forth. Where I work I have strong LTE and EVDO but when I'm in the building it will switch to 3G once I start using data like Youtube or something. Once I stop and set the phone down it will reconnect to LTE. If I go towards the outer part of the building I will get a better LTE connection, or if I go outside it is really good. This is due to the poor penetration of the 1900mhz LTE.
The phone will connect to the higher priority signal, first 4G and then 3G.
As said above, it seems like your LTE connection is very weak, or else the phone would stick to that.
Ok so i did *#*#4636#*#* and changed it from CDMA + LTE to LTE, CDMA and it hasn't dropped from 4G

If you set it to "LTE only" then yes but if you set it to "LTE,CDMA" it will only connect to LTE and 1XRTT and bypasses EVDO. So you phone should stay on 4G a lot more since EVDO is disabled but if LTE drops you will drop to 1X

Correct. Hence CDMA/LTE vs CDMA/EvDO/LTE. You can also do LTE only if you're feeling bold.
I know this doesn't sound possible hell I Dont believe it myself but I am in LittleRock Arkansas where Sprint has NO 4g, I'm up here at work bored so I flash the 1000 Verizon prl, I unlock my SIM card (don't think that mattered , I didn't put a SIM card in). I forced roaming on my phone and I about had a heart attack when the 4g showed in my notification bar!! I thought it may be wrong but I ran some speed test with and without it. The catch is I lost voice. How is this possible?

Highly doubt it... Verizon is operating LTE on 700 mhz (the latest article I saw was that in 2015 they will plan to shift some EVDO to LTE on 1900). The Sprint HTC One only supports LTE on 1900.
Just because Sprint hasn't officially announced LTE in that area doesn't mean they haven't been doing the update. They have a ton of location that have spotty (and even complete) LTE coverage that aren't even officially on the LTE list.
The n.ispsn is something new also.

Force roaming causing 4G detection isn't anything new, actually. If you put the device into LTE mode only, it achieves something similar. The device would much rather stay on Sprint service if at all possible and will take a weak LTE signal if it can (even if it would normally prefer a nearby Sprint tower providing 3G coverage).
The speeds you've posted are in-line with a Sprint 4G test/slow rollout and would frankly be rather laughable on Verizon's 4G network-- if we get around the obvious hurtle that it is not physically possible for your phone to pick up Verizon's LTE, full stop.
Eliminate what's impossible (by hardware) and we have a series of at least possible alternatives.

Sprint 4G on initial release in an area or an a tower is very wonky. It's off and on, slow and only works at a short range. Just be patient and you will get it really soon. They just activated it in a couple areas where I live also. They tend to put them near Sprint Corp stores.

Why is it unbelievable that Sprint is bringing 4g to Arkansas... They HAVE TO do the NV update on every single tower that broadcasts Sprint Signal. It is cheap as dirt to just add the LTE hardware into the NV station once the NV upgrade is completed. This is a nation wide requirement since they are about to do some wonky ass things on the 1900 MHz PCS bands (when they start to reallocate their allowed bandwidth to different techs, it is an across the board FCC license).
I'm from Arkansas too and have been keeping up with the 4G there because that's where I travel to every chance I get. Jonesboro has sprint lte and it's been planned for little rock and Fayetteville to get it for months. It was only a matter of which day. I'm surprised it took them this long. But it was expected. I'm so happy to hear this wonderful news

I live outside of a city with LTE so my phone sometimes fluctuates between that and HSPA+. So, I downloaded the new FCC Speedtest app and decided to try it out today. On HSPA+, my downloads were about 10-11 Mbps, but when it switched to LTE, I could only pull about half that. Is there any way to manually toggle between the two connection types or any suggestions to speed up my LTE speeds? In town, my speeds on LTE are great, not so much where I live.
