I am very new to this forum. Recentely I have purchased GNote - Indian version. This is my first Android device.
Installed firmware / stocke ROM details as below:
Baseband Version: N7000DDKL1
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-N7000XXKL3-CL793489 [email protected]#2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.XXL3
I think above is the latest / updated firmware / stock ROM available for Indian GNote.
I want to update it to the latest / stable firmware / stock ROM version (I don't want rooting). Can someone please guide me by providing step by step details?
Thanks in advance

If you want custom rom then you need root, otherwise you hav to use pc odin, which will raise flash counter n you will lose warranty, n that needs JIG hardware to reset.
You have option to flash any stock ROM, above said link is best choice to download stock ROM. You will find installation guide on same thread, post #2 n 3.
Btw i m in india n using latest German ROM la4 n is much stable.

Hi Dr. Ketan. Thanks for your reply. I don't want to lose warranty and I don't want to rooting the device. I want to install latest stable samsung official stock ROM which may be available in another country. In that scenario what will be the recommended steps?

Install Latest version of Kies.
download the Stock ROM from the above link (i prefer LA4)
extract it and you ll find one .md5 file
download Odin from same link
attach downloaded .md5 file to PDA tab
in Odin make sure Re-Partition is UN-ticked and do not select any pit file. rest of them let it be.
now turn off your device
restart in download mode by pressing Volume down + home + Power after that just press volume up to confirm download mode
connect Device to PC via data cable (now you can see yellow block in Odin)
now press Start and wait for complete boot.
Thats it....
(Flashing this ROM will not erase any DATA)

In that case also, you can have XXLA4 german ROM, which counts as most stable stock ROM.
Ranjan.alva have gave you a link, just above this post, follow it, you can get installation guide, How to flash ROM with odin on same thread post#2
EDIT : Ranjan have already edited his post n made easy for you. just follow it. still you have any doubt, you will get image guide on same thread post # 2
Thanks a lot both of you. Now I have one question if I upgrade to XXLA4 German ROM weather I will get future update (like ICS) via OTA? Or every time I need to install updated firmware via KIES or Odin?
And after upgrading to XXLA4 german ROM if I want to go back to the earlier stock ROM (XXL3) which already installed how can I do that?

M posting new guide in evening about how to update rom, stay tuned to my development section thread ' how to root ....'
If you install LA4, you wont get update over OTA or even with Kies, you have to update it with odin.
The way which you will update la4, same way with odin you can revert back to xxkl3

Hi,
I installed RocketRom v.23 and so far it is great, aside from some minor issues.
However, as I need to return the phone back for some other reason, is there any way to find what was the original ROM on my phone before I install this custom ROM on top of it? Maybe from the IMEI or sth???
PLEASE ADVICE cause I know they will not accept it without the original ROM.
It is not possible to know
But you can find ROm for your country from here N flash it with PC Odin.
I think you can check the date of your purchase invoice of the device and find a rom released before that date and flash it. You can find the date adjacent to rom details in Dr. Ketans thread.

this is the answer. you dont need the exact rom on your phone before. you need to find any rom that you could have upgraded your phone over kies.
Dear folks
When Samsung released their ICS update I was so exited but it wouldn't update mine since mine has csc lux so I had to wait till they released it for my country.
So the German version came online and I used PC Odin to get my phone to ICS with the German release. (So I flashed it? New to this)
Now I'm assuming that ICS is out for my country OTA or with Kies. So I want to use one of both to upgrade my phone so I have the stock and don't risk anything.
So you've probably seen the question coming, how do I get back to stock GB so I can update it afterwards with Kies or OTA.
Please take note that I'm a complete newb in this.
Thanks in advance!
You will have to use PC Odin to go back to stock Gingerbread.
Go here to find your stock rom for your country and download it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
You probably had to Odin to the ICS version you are on now, so if you remember how you did that, it's the same thing in Odin.
After you have that stock Gingerbread you should be able to check for updates and get your official OTA or Kies ICS.

i'm tired of waiting and with the new asian builds i just wanna update but coming from ios (just had my note for 2 weeks) i don't wanna mess up.so just download stock india rom for example use pc odin to flash and follow dr ketan tutorial to root?how about the modem (baseband), kernel and my unlock?do i have to worry about losing the unlock?thanks
So country is what my csc says right? Cause I bought it in Belgium (where I live) but my csc says lux
You *must* flash a safe kernel first, reboot the phone again into download mode then you can flash your old GB ROM.
If you don't do that, you can trigger the emmc bug in your current ICS kernel and fry the internal memory, unless you're using a CM9-based kernel then you're safe.

Could you translate to noob friendly language? With a safe kernel you mean a safe rom or? I googled DL mode so got this and the last part to but the other piece of text is unclear

Basically I just want to upgrade my sister's Galaxy Note to 4.0.4 since the OTA is nowhere in sight (the device has a panama region code). Since I read that the superbrick bug is still present (how is this still not fixed for stock roms?) I want to ask if this procedure is correct:
Doing a factory reset from the current Rom (stock GB) and poweroff the device.
Flash a ICS Rom with odin. I am currently downloading a 4.0.4 Rom: N7000XEULP5_XEU. This Rom still has the bug?
I need to flash a safe kernel with the above Rom? What one I should use? I prefer one as closer to the stock one as possible. I see like 10+ different kernels in the dev subforum so I don't know what one to choose if I would need it.
Note: I don't have the need to root the device.
Sorry if the question is too noobish but all that I know is how to flash Sony firmwares (flashtool+fastboot).

Have you tried kies for update? and yes stock Kernels still have this bug.
For more info on stock ROMS and flash check drketan's thread... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
Since u dont need custom rom nor root there os no need for using Odin, entering download mode and so,just make a full factory reset from ur current GB rom, then connect ur device to kies,it will do all the works for u,very simple
↖(^▽^)↗ Sent from Rego Galaxy Note ↖(^▽^)↗
no need
ur abs rite
as ur on gb..wipe data..factory reset..
then go to download mode
and flash d stock 4.0.4 via pc odin
no need to be rooted or root later
u need not install any safe kernel (unless u plan to reset/wipe devie again)
and ul continue getin updates in future automatically..it being an unmodified stock rom
Yes, I have tried kies but it says that there are no updates for the device.
I don't have plans to install a custom Rom but I have read that a factory reset from the settings menu can brick the phone. Is this true? I don't want her phone bricked for what it seemed a harmless function.
If I flash a safe kernel can still receive OTA updates? I am deciding between warning her about the factory reset so she can receive updates or just flash a safe kernel and have to give her support for future updates xD
Thanks for your answers

Factory reset on stock ICS can still brick your phone, and you will not receive OTA on custom Kernels.
It is better you ask her not to factory reset until Samsung releases safe kernel.
Hope you may get help.from 'ROM.switching' on my signature.
