I have cognition rom and instead of having 3g I have this H internet. It sits on 3g for a milla second then switches to H. My buddy with iphone four is getting way higher speed tests than me, why can't I get 3g and get better speeds?

Since this has only been answered 100 times in the past three weeks...
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=H+instead+of+3g+XDA
AND as far as the better speeds for the Iphone go......you can Google that as well............ I'm guessing your on At&T?
I don't know why but my buddies 3g was consistently hitting 300-350 kbs. The max I was hitting was like 150. We were right next to each other when we were testing this, I guess that the iphone blows the captivate away in 3g reception and speed. Also in the spotty areas he was keeping his 3g and I was dropping down to edge. Kinda disappointed . Had anyone else noticed that the 3g reception isn't that good our is it just my area?

this is why i hate american cell providers, they want you to remain ignorant. it's not your fault but it is funny that people arent familiar with grps, edge, hspa, and hspa+ it is like they are telling you that you are too stupid to understand so you dont need to know.
the cdma providers are the worst. but att should be proud of having hspa, but i think they want to hide the fact that it is not available in all 3g areas. instead they advertise the hspa speeds as there 3g speeds as hspa works on there 3g network. they dont distinguish the two so you think there network is so much faster in so many places
meanwhile verizon advertises the hspa coverage for att as 3g coverage to make att's coverage look smaller. they say they have so much more coverage, if they showed a current 3g map for att instead of the hspa coverage you would not see a big difference at all. also cdma 3g is totally different from what att has and is not a fair comparison in the first place. how can you compare coverage if the speed is not comparable?
Comparing phones side by side with speed test is also not the best way to test which device is faster, especially if they are on the same network. I am annoyed by the input on this device or Id go in depth. Use some google-foo and read on cell phone signaling and theory and youll see what I mean.

Hey guys, I'm planning on buying this phone and I was just wondering if there was any signal issues. I currently have an S3, and I get fairly weak signals depending on what area i'm in and it really blows.
External antennas with active tuning and send/receive diversity.
It's better than the GS3 in reception.
Yes there is a specific problem with 4g signal experienced by me and others.
The 3g and gsm coverage are excellent but there is no doubt that 4g reception is terrible on this phone. It drops calls far to quickly when switching to 3g in low signal areas; whilst this does not happen when using other 4g devices.
The thread for signal is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2201898
The signal quality on this phone is excellent in my opinion and just as good as my old Lumia 920 can't vouch for 4G yet as it's not available where I live but cannot fault it.
Can those who have the device already comment on your reception strength compared to your previous devices?
I have a Moto X, and I used the have the M7. Signal strength of the X is a consistent 10-15 dBm better than on the M7.
Just wondering if anyone can chip in and comment on this. If signal strength is about the same as the M7, I may have to go with the S5. I tether for my home internet so every little bit matters.

I have a moto X as a test device. Its not activated, but sitting right next to the New One I get the following:
New One: -110 dbm
Moto X: - 108 dbm
Evo 4G LTE: -106 dbm
Hope that helps.

It does, thank you.
For me it makes the difference between hanging onto LTE and dropping down to 3G.

Hopefully some others will chime in with their results.. because being worse then the evo lte is not looking good.
That was my main complaint, it would always prefer 3g over lte. Switched to the One and it was much better. Although the fcc filings showed the M8 being even better then the M7. so this is weird.

Yeah from what I've read the Evo LTE had horribad reception.
Another big thing is that the M8 and S5 have Spark... And since I live in Houston, I'll be able to take advantage of that, which is huge.

Yeah, im in kc.. So i can't wait to see the difference between spark and their normal lte as well.
Unfortunately i have to wait until next week before they'll put in my order.. Something about only online and telesales until next week, which doesn't handle business accounts. Wait is killin me.

Was this on 3G? The Evo is notorious for having a subpar LTE radio, while the Moto X is known to have a good/strong LTE radio. Your numbers contradict those facts, unless these numbers represent 3G signal. Otherwise, it sounds like the M8 is bad in the RF field.

No this is in LTE. I have modified my back on my EVO LTE to make it have a great connection to the antenna every time. Guess I should have posted that.
My old HTC One here at home would connect to LTE and drop to 3G my new one is on LTE and has not dropped down.
Sitting in my living room and seeing the LTE and Spark icon on statusbar, only one bar but it nice to see. It spins as well.

I am on a Sprint business account and was able to order on launch day. I didn't order until about 5pm CST here in KC, so it won't arrive until Friday. It's in Lenexa right now and THAT is killing me!
Signal strength on my M8 is consistently 8-10 dBm higher than on my Jewel, sitting next to each other, as reported by SignalCheck Pro.

That's not good :/. Are you comparing the LTE dBm?

On my M7 I would bounce between 3g/4g all day at work...My M8 stayed on 4g all day at work today

Just got to work and LTE signal is 15dbm lower(better signal). I have never seen -82 dBm on the OG One. Pretty much had LTE/SPARK the whole 1.5 hours to work.

This is one of the things that I wanted to know the most. Do you mind setting the phone to CDMA only to compare 3G? LTE at my house is really poor, so I'm just hoping for a better 3G signal for the times when I'm in the area, but not indoors to use WiFi.

Me too. I am happy about that.
Higher dBm means the signal is weaker. Maybe I miss understood you and you meant higher as in the dBm was lower.

My new M8 definitely seems to hold onto LTE better than my EVO 4G LTE did, it's always saying LTE in parts of my house where the old phone would drop to EVDO. In fact, except for forcing it to EVDO once, I haven't seen it drop there at all.
I am seeing strange issues with Wi-Fi though. The 2.4GHz Wi-Fi radio seems to work fine, but at 5GHz things get lossy. Using Signal Check, I see the link speed up around 300-500Mbps and RSSI varies between -55 dBm to as high as -31 dBm, however, if I were to setup a ping between my laptop on the same network and the phone I see upwards of 50% packet loss. Moving the phone physically I can almost plot out what seem like signal nodes and antinodes. My AP here is an Asus RT-AC66U, and the M8 is the only 802.11ac capable device I believe I've ever tried connecting to it. My older phone and my laptop connect to it at 802.11n just fine.
I'm wondering if anybody else is seeing 5GHz issues, I'll continue to try diagnosing things to see if it's a problem other than with the phone.
Hello guys/girls !
I'm using JIO as service provider in India for my Nexus 6. I've recently noticed my speed gone down drastically. Wondering, I downloaded Signal Spy app and found that, when my mobile is locking to specific tower (Found using GCI code), speed is going down to 200 Kbps (transfer speeds of 20Kbps) but when it is locking to different tower speed is going way up (10 Mbps). Sadly as expected my mobile always locks to the poor tower. So just thinking is it possible to blacklist that specific tower? HELP !
People have been asking about blacklisting specific towers since at least 2013, and the answer for all of them has been the same: it can't be done. The hardware isn't designed to do what you want it to do. All the hardware does it find the strongest signal and connect using that. Unfortunately for you, the strongest signal has the lower bandwidth.
The only advice I can give you is this: you either need to switch to a carrier that has better throughput in your area, or you need to move closer to that other tower.
