[Q] Questions from a Noob - TouchPad Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

With cm9 they released the source. I dont have the first idea about what that means but I want to find out. So my question is if I screw my touchpad up can I completly start from scratch with webos dr. What should I absolutly not do when screwing with the source? Thanks.

You'll get fresh start with the Dr. I did it and I only had to reinstall moboot with acmeinstaller, all my other Android were left.
As for tweaking the source, I have no idea......

The fact that "they released the source" has no bearing on your installing CM9. The "source code" is used by developers to do more to improve and tweak the the ROMs they create. What you download are the "compiled" images. Not the "source code".

Exactly what I'm talking about. I have not the first idea. But as long as I can use the dr. to get me back to normal I wanna play with all that stuff.

Go to you tube and look up ACMEUNINSTALLER, it will show you how to bring your touchpad back to stock so you can restart or leave stock

2.0 AOSP?

So, at the risk of being flamed, I still have to ask (since I did a half-assed search) what exactly this means? Does it mean the source of the ROM has been made availible to the public? Becuase I thought it already was.. or was that just for application developers to have the 2.0 environment to make/test their programs with..? I think that was the ADP..? Does this mean now that ROM modifiers such as Cyanogen have their hands on the source now to manipluate and develope it?
Go ahead and flame on if you must.. I would just like to get this cleared up becuase it is knowledge to be attained.

This means that the 2.0 version of Android (or at least partially as of writing) has gone open source and people may begin building 2.0 from source.
i have the feeling 3.0 isnt so far away

2.0 going "ASOP" means that the 2.0 source is officially released to the Android Open Source Project

Required knowledge for building and mod Samsung GT-i9000 kernel

Hi, I would like to know what I have to learn in order to mod the stock kernel of GT-i9000, which last version (linux version 2.6.35) was written for the use in Gingerbread 2.3.6. My intention is to make it work in ICS or Jelly Bean Custom Roms, and then start tweaking and experimenting, but I need the basics first
I'm talking about knowledge specific to the kernel since I know how to make C programs and the structure of the android stack (Watched this someone? It's great!). Where I have to go? Websites specialized in the matter, ebooks to read, docs... By the moment I have downloaded and installed the CodeSourcery toolkit Samsung tells to install in the README file.
I expect to not completely brick my only sgs phone, but anyway I would like to know how to do it
EDIT: I edited a bit my question since I though it wasn't clear enough what I already know.
No one can help me? I don't expect to have the whole story, just to know what I have to learn :/ May be I'm not in the right subforum for this question. Full noob here at XDA xD

Yup but is not because I though there was no kernel. I know there are a lot, Devil's, Semaphore... I just want to do it by myself
No,Good work.:banghead:
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda app-developers app
If you want to create a kernel for ics/jb, you should start with the default kernel of CM9/CM10, as most kernels for ics/jb are based on it. Then you could compare it to Semaphore, devil, ..., to see what they do differently.

CM10 for 4X HD

Sorry my ignorance but... he needed to flash that phone right?
If that is possible, why we still having people here with bricked devP880's ???
If he can put that phone running on CM10, why we can't even flash a regular .kdz file?
I have no idea

can you atleast tweak the stock 4x rom?
not libraries but atleast porn some other apps?
especially LS and contacts?
Dexter, how far is your progress on the jb Rom? Can you release it here (as alpha/beta), so we can test it?

i would rather not. having too many posts saying not working or similar, is not fun, ive been around too long to find that interesting or positive.
and personally i find it less worth testing in public, since its basically stock jb and hardly nothing works.

many define a custom rom by the option to compile a kernel from source.
we cannot include a modified kernel, without semi-bricking our devices.
but we can change startup and we can init kernel parameters a second time, to allow loading of different services and libraries, which for some is enough to load a customized kernel for graphics mod, removing adware, loading modules and porting cm10,aokp and other roms, like sense or similar miui roms.
i personally believe a port of highly modified rom, is custom. other believe its not a real rom
anyways with the clockworkmod i made its possible, as long as you do the same hijack when needed to change kernel init services or libraries to load.

lack of support from more developers i guess, seems other hardware devices are more popular, and propably much easier to get donations on that on a device with locked bootloaders where development stops at the locked device. today, donations is very popular and driving many towards popular devices.

Find devs for 2nd boot cm10 romw

i had a motorola defy with locked bootloader. There were no hope for updates and for custom roms. Till dev (quarx) did it. Now defy has jelly bean (cm10). Lets search for devs and make a donation app, so they can buy our phone add develop one great rom.
Great idea, but do we have enough people? No one will buy the phone if we can donate only ~100€
well, not to develop ROM, but better to sacrifice their/his phone to try unlocking bootloader..

Yes it will...well at least for a custom kernel i think. Still, drivers have to come from Nvidia. And everyone knows about their reputation when it comes providing open source codes and such.

incorrect, i made the Sense custom for Defy way before even CM9 was invented, but correct 2nd-init was working already then and no none really spend much investigating how to use it early on, but that was probably 1yr+ ago.

i did mine in feb.2011 , Quarx did his first post of cm7 in april 2011, i do not know if that helps your memory. (i did check all his post on the topic) . I strongely believe i was utilizing 2ndinit on defy on a customrom, and i was introducing it here on o4x for now.
but to stay on topic, no one seems to have faith in a CM10 for O4X here, i tried to port, but that never went well, and compiling only helps so far as the ril driver is documented by LG here.
but the rest should be straight forward, since we share chipset with OneX which got quite far now.
btw,
i did post my CM10 rom as nandroid backup using 2nd init , so your request is already existing on o4x, just not with a phone functionality.

I have downloaded the file and it is .zip file .. It has two files that are kernel and platform files >> Good news
Now, I can see all the files for our O4X and everything is clear . We can make modification for it and install it by CWM
I hope you guys all the best with development . The kernel file has the drivers for our O4X

Please, look at the information of tegra 3 and open your eyes as much as you can at the official website

Maybe you need it sooner or later ..
Best regards,
IMHO
As long as the kernel is not signed u cant really use it. i dont remember anyone using 2nd init on milestone for a custom kernel.
they actually just adapted CM for the old kernels wich is a lot of work i think... And that could be done for our 4xHD as well the problem is
actually that u need the devs for it.
And i think no dev really wants 2 work on a standart phone unless he has it and really wants to keep it and mod on it.

[REQUEST] GB kernel

I'll try to do what I suggested at this post -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2142591 .
But I need to know where I need to start. (Ok, I know where, but don't know HOW). Here it goes what I think, but I need help.
I have ideas, but don't know how to do all of them. So I need help, I need somebody there can help me. Give me some light. C_C
As I said, I wanna "split" gb kernel + cm9. Simple. But, how?
I need the droid 3 gb kernel, and I need a cm9 rom without the kexec kernel.
OR, (and I would very much appreciate) if some of our brilliant minds could expend just about 30 mins to explain to me how could I do it by myself.
ie:
Where I can extract, get, download the kernel. Or how I remove it from other place;
If the cm9 than i've downloaded came with kexec kernel, and how I remove it;
What I should do when I complete these steps;
*if there is a file (look how i'm losted! I even know if is a file, or a folder, .. buh ): ..).
pls. ):

Im kinda lost at what your trying to do, you dont need a kernel to compile just cm9 really.
but if u want to try booting cm9 without the new kexec kernel3 just delete /system/etc/kexec folder and it will boot into 'stock' gb kexec kernel2 as long as you have safestrap installed
If you need the source for complete stock kernel hashcode has it hosted
https://github.com/Hashcode/solana_kernel
if you need the compiled kexec GB kernel im sure its in safestrap somewhere
You would probly need to make edits to cm9 though to make it work with gb stock kernel, it would be easier to use cm7 probly.
I wonder if Hash's old work on it is around?

exaplaining, i wanna try to use cm9 without kexec kernel, 'cause still with bugs. i saw this post, and after read it all, i thinked if it's not possible do it again. at this post, was posted a cm9 rom, working fine, without bugs. BECAUSE it wasn't with kexec kernel, but with gb kernel.
but the links is off, and ill try to do it by myself. and looking your simple explanation, i'll try and post results, being good or not. but i still have some questions.
1 - as you said, i need to make what kind of edits?
2 - at cm7, what & how i suppose to act?

I hate to break it to you, but that cm9 is not fully functional and without bugs. Just off the top of my head I know it has no camcorder, and no HW codecs and while the photo camera works, it's a hack and takes forever to open and can't be used for secondary functions like scanning QR codes. Also I'm pretty sure battery life is ****. And I believe it has the mediaserver battery drain bug, where if you listen to music it will drain your phones in 2-3 hours, tops
And this is just what I can think of, it's been quite some time since I've ran it. If you're determined, I can check to see if I have it kicking around in my Linux files later, but i wouldn't hold your breath.
I don't want to discourage you from trying to learn more about android hacking and dev, but based on your posts I don't think you have the knowledge to fix cm9, I know I don't.
I know it would be great to have a fully functional better than gingerbread rom, but I'm afraid it's GB or beta.

Cm7 was mostly functional, and I'm pretty sure I have that, but it never worked for the xt860 properly, mobile connection issues. Personally I think it's the libmoto_ril.so, or something in the build.prop, or both. Look into what other moto devices use the same radio as the xt860 and if they have cm7
