sorry if this is a stupid question
but i've just bought a nexus one from a friend which has a custom rom (MoDaCo Rom R22)
i take it is rooted,but my question is i would like to put it back to standard or another good rom u would recommend
so which rom do i get and how do i install it

If you want to switch to a new custom ROM:
First doublecheck that you're really rooted, check your apps and see if you have one called Superuser. If so, you are.
Second, see what custom recovery you're using. Turn off your phone. Once it's off, press the Volume Down button and then press the power button simultaneously. A white screen will show up, hit down a few times and let it run a quick little check and then select Recovery and hit your power button.
You should see either ClockworkMod Recovery or Amon_Ra. Next turn your phone on and hit the menu button and go to settings. Then scroll down to About Phone and then look at Baseband Version.
If the last numbers are 4.06.00.12_7 then go to

and work your way down for the recovery version that you have on your phone, otherwise start at

. This will install CyanogenMod 6.0, which is generally considered one of the better stable mods and a great first mod for someone who doesn't know a whole lot about custom ROMs.
If you want to completely reset your phone to its initial factory settings you can use a simple process suggested to me last night:

Note: I'm too much of a noobcake to post URLs, so hopefully someone can repost it or edit this to make the links easier.
I suggest just opening Nexus One Wiki (the topmost thread with the same name links to it), reading, and executing either the "Flashing custom ROMs" guide or "Unroot/Restore your Nexus" guide.
About custom ROMs - I suggest looking in Developer section, checking out a few, and settling on something you like.
And I don't suggest using ROM Manager.

Why not ROM Manager? It would allow you to flash to a stock prerooted Froyo firmware. From there you can decide what you want to do next.
That being said, if you want to do anything more advanced, I suggest you become comfortable with navigating the custom recovery yourself, nandroid backups, adb, and all that jazz. Also you will want to verify if the bootloader is unlocked, or if the previous owner used a root exploit that didn't require unlocking.

Lets get this out of the way first. I am not responsible if you screw up your phone, but you are probably here because you already screwed up your phone. I have now been through this several times over the last few days. Some will say this process is overkill, but there is no denying that it always works, so please refrain from stating the obvious.
If you have installed or updated CM7/MIUI and lost your baseband, IMEI, or both, this should help you. Due to the amount of people currently having this problem, I would recommend this be stickied at least temporarily until things are straightened out, so people can find it easily.
For Windows only, I do not have a Mac.
Step 1 - Read the entire post and understand everything involved before you attempt this. This is a long ride, probably 30-40 minutes from start to end. This is not for new people, and will assume you have a certain amount of knowledge because you attempted to flash CM7/MIUI.
DO NOT SKIP OR SHORTCUT ANY STEP IN THIS PROCESS, UNLESS I SPECIFICALLY STATED YOU MET THE CRITERIA TO DO SO. DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT TRYING THIS UNLESS YOU CAN REACH DOWNLOAD MODE AND RECOVERY USING BUTTONS WITH THE PHONE OFF!
Step 2 - Gather what you need...
1 - The AIO Vibrant Toolbox : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=954509
Install according to directions in the post. Donate to this guy. He spent alot of time making this easy for you to do.
2 - The old CM7 install files : http://www.mediafire.com/?gn4qoonoe3cjyp6
Unzip to a location that is easy to get to.
3 - The new version of CM7/MIUI you want to install, from the thread of your choice. Donate to the developer you are using, they spend alot of their free time making your phone better. They don't get paid for it, and they dont charge you for it.
4 - Your phone, with a full battery.
Step 3 - Odin to JFD and install Clockwork 2.x
1 - Fire up the AIO Toolbox. Do not connect your phone yet, but power it down and pull your battery. See that sticker under it that says IMEI? Write it down! You will be referencing it a few times throughout the process. Start Odin and select your pit and pda files, they should automatically come up if you are using the toolbox. Hold down your volume up and down buttons, and insert your USB cable, then insert your battery. You should go to download mode, and see Odin connect. Hit start and let it fly. Once it reboots, unplug your phone. Go to settings/about phone and you should have a JFD baseband. Hit status, and check your IMEI. See how it matches the one you wrote down? Yay! Move on to the next item. If it does not, you have some reading to do because you really screwed something up, and it is beyond my power to help you...
2 - Mount phone and put the following files on the root of the sd card:
vibrant-efsbackup.zip (if you already have a backup/efs folder on your sd card you do not need this)
cm7-vibrant-initial-20110224.zip
The zip file of the new CM7/MIUI rom you want to flash.
3 - Download ROM Manager and install clockwork recovery 2.x (if you already have the update.zip on your sd card, which you should, you can also skip this) and power down your phone.
4 - Boot into recovery using the 3 button method (holding volume up and down and power, releasing power when the word VIbrant appears on your screen), hit reinstall packages, you may have to hit it twice to get to clockwork recovery. Choose to install zip from sd card, and select vibrant-efsbackup.zip. Let it do its thing. Then select reboot, and when it does, check your sd card for a backup/efs folder. Got it? Good. Power down the phone. (Obviously, if you already have the efs backup completed, you could have skipped this step.)
Step 4 - Install Clockwork 3.x and Old CM7
1 - Fire up the AIO Toolbox. Do not connect your phone yet, but pull your battery. Start Odin and hit the pda button, select the file cm7-vibrant-initial-kernel.tar from the CM7 package you unzipped (Remember, in a place that is easy to find). THIS IS IMPORTANT - UNCHECK AUTO REBOOT!!! Hold down your volume up and down buttons, and insert your USB cable, then insert your battery. You should enter download mode, and see Odin connect. Hit start and let it fly. Once it is finished, pull the usb cable. With the download mode screen still on your phone, boot into recovery using the 3 button method. You should now be in clockwork recovery 3.x. Move on to the next item! If you did not get in, you can try to pull your battery, replace it and boot into recovery from there. If you still can't get there, you get to go where the people who do not properly follow instructions go... back to Step 1.
2 - In clockwork 3.x, choose factory reset, and let it do it's thing. Then go to mounts and storage, and format system, data, and cache. Choose install zip from sd card and choose cm7-vibrant-initial -20110224.zip. As it is installing, one of the last things you see should be "restoring efs". Hit reboot when finished, and boot into CM7. When it boots, make sure you toggle the lockscreen a couple times so it connects to service. Check baseband and IMEI again. Baseband should have changed to KB1. IMEI still the same right? Awesome! Power down the phone, move to the next step! It's not? You my friend, get to meet all your other friends back at Step 1.
Step 5 - Installing what you really want...
1 - Boot into recovery using the 3 button combo. Do a factory reset, wipe cache partition, go to advanced and wipe Dalvik cache. Choose install zip from sd card, and pick that shiny new version of CM7/MIUI you picked out. You are almost there. Flash it! Reboot, and when it comes back up, take note of what time it is and DO NOT TOUCH THE PHONE FOR 15 MINUTES. You have no idea the amount of bugs this squashes. After that, check the baseband, it will be KB1 unless the rom you just flashed changed it. Check the IMEI, even though you already know it is right anyway. If it is not, do i have to say it again? You know where you are going...
2 - Destroy the paper you wrote your IMEI on, you would not want that info in the wrong hands...
3 - Enjoy your new rom
FAQ:

A: Once you are on CM7 or MIUI with the proper IMEI and a good baseband, you should be able to update via the rom posting instructions. If you decided to switch from CM7 to MIUI or vice versa, I would go back to this process to get your initial installation.
Q: I installed CM7.1 and then tried to go to MIUI, and lost everything again, what happened?
A: There are changes betweeen CM7 to 7.1 that have made this difficult due to compatability issues, which is why I recommend doing this process again if you want to switch between the two.

i thought the baseband loss was due to kernel compatibility with the newer versions of CM7/Miui? Good post nonetheless hope it helps people out.

That is the first paragraph of my post. And it has already been stated that people are losing IMEI/Baseband anyway. This always works, period. Thanks for the input.
I did the steps properly and now my phone only boots to recovery...
yup i do this every time - the last few attempts with the quick two file flash method is causing all sorts of crap to go wrong on my phone even from a fresh odin - i am pdy05 and i approve this message

I've done this twice now, and yet again I end up in a situation where my phone will only boot to Clockwork Recovery.
If it helps, Clockword always says E:no misc partition at the bottom. Never seen that before with all of my flashing endeavors.

The e: thing means nothing, it is a old CM7 thing. At exactly what point are you getting stuck booting into recovery?
Is this your first time flashing CM7/MIUI?

Nope, I was previously running CM7.1. I said **** it and installed 7.1 from CWM2 and it worked perfectly. IMEI is correct and everything.
It seemed to **** up when ODINing the initial kernel.

Glad it worked out for you anyway, may have been a bad download. Those are the exact files I use to do it... and I am on CM7.1 using this method after losing my IMEI trying to go from clockwork 2...
Was it when you tried to boot into clockwork 3 for the first time, or after you wiped and flashed the initial rom?

Completely clueless, but that is why I put this up, so after I had a definite way to fix mine, others could fix theirs. The problem itself seems to be more with MIUI than CM7, but it is happening with both. I would not be surprised if it happened to more people who have simply not checked their IMEI, and are working off a generic one because they have service.

My external sd card is not recognized after successfully booting MIUI. This has been bother me for days now... I see sd card icon in the status bar and it says "sd card safe to remove" I tried mounting/unmounting/formating - I only see the main partition when i plug usb cable to windows. EMMC folder is empty as well.
Does anyone else experience this?!
what i dont understand is Rom manager premium made it so easy a baby could install it! download rom off rom manager premium CM7 nightlies make sure u flash clockwork recovery vibrant mtd and 3x and not 2x! install download and wait......way too easy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Make sure u wipe data, wipe dalvik and backup rom when it asks its pretty simple.
I've got a better way, install Rom manager, select rom, click flash. TADA!!!!
Okay guys, I thought what the hell, I'll try the LGE Black option in ROM manager and see what happens.
IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Use the volume keys to move and the search button to select.
The first boot into it, you will get all kinds of errors saying it can't mount certain files.
Go to "Mounts and Storage" and select "mount /cache". The errors will go away.
Everything seems to work as it should.
A quirk that I found was that until you "Wipe cache partition" you will be stuck in recovery and you cannot get out. Once done, "Reboot System Now" and everything works great.
One last thing, I cannot figure out how to key combo into recovery. I have to use ROM manager to access it.
NOTE:CWM messes up turning off the phone. Pressing the power button and selecting OK to turn off will now reset the phone and then boot it back up. Now only way to power off phone (besides pulling battery) is to use ROM Manager to boot into recovery, wipe the cache, then select power off.

I have tried and you do not get a complete backup. You do get the boot and recovery img files but not much else.
I have tried (without luck) via twitter to contact Koushik Dutta, the man responsible for CWM. We really need his assistance for this to move forward.
well, I know its possible to use the Android Terminal Emulator to flash a custom recovery image from your sd card;

I wonder if it can be used to generate an image of your phones current state to create your own back up and file it on your sd card.
Haven't tried to do any type of restore yet. I have managed to get the boot and recovery IMG files and used adb to get a copy of the system files.
(The LG-Black Dev's are using these files to develop their Gingerbread version.)
I might try to figure out how to do this from the link you gave. If I do, I will post what I find out.
Honestly though, after guinea pigging the root and CWM without total bricking the phone, I'm afraid of pushing my luck too far.
It would be nice if some more people would jump in and help with some of this but I guess the phone is to new to have very many users. Seems like I see the same few names on the three Marquee forums I know of.

Hang in there... I think once all the chaos from the iphone settles down, more people will have the Marquee. Most stores in my area are saying they don't even have it. They don't even have them on display.

so, I've done some digging...apparently the marquee isn't the only LG phone not supported by the ROM manager app.

Dang, that key combo should be implemented on Optimus Black as well. Marquee has the goodies.

wait...this works for CWM and gets you into recovery...but the recovery itself is still temperamental correct? still no way to create a nandroid backup?

hey guys, I have done a backup of my stock rom from cwm, I think it worked, but I have no reason to flash it back yet, I'm as geeked as everyone else for roms on this thing, but I still miss my captivate, firefly was awesome
well then, THAT's interesting. So everything appears to be working in CWM for you? Just using the OPBlack version?

But I honestly haven't had enough time to delve into this much. I had the Marquee for about 2 weeks or so, but had to temporarily switch for work-related reasons. Will probably switch back to it as my personal phone, so I would love to see / hear some progress on this.
Didn't work quit as well for me... When I tried to mount the cache I got an error. The only way I could get out of the recovery screen was to 'Wipe Cache Partition'
By the way THANK YOU for posting that. I could not figure out how to get out of that screen. My phone is rooted and I have been waiting for people to develop... but it looks like there are not many people developing on the Marquee

Hey all,
I'm looking since over a week for a solution but without luck. I tried quite everything, I ended up in purchasing ROM Manager Premium. My problem is that I cannot boot into the clockword recovery mode, so I can perform a Nandroid Full Backup of my existing ROM. I am running stock firmware, nothing special. I just rooted my device and I also installed ROM Manager Premium. I clicked on "Flash Recovery" and of course I assigned superuser rights with the "remember" option checked. I tried:
- open the application ROM Manager and choose the second function called "reboot into recovery". result--> my device do a normal boot, nothing happens.
- I tried powering on the phone by first turn it off, then push simultanously Powerbutton+VolumeDownButton+HomeButton. Nothing --> it still boots on normal way.
- When I slide/open my droid3, and powering on my phone using the powerbutton+X-button then I am getting this explanation mark. Then I have to push simulatenously volup+voldown buttons and I see the stock boot mode of Motorola, where I can reset to factory defaults, and so on. This is the stock boot mode, isn't it?
- When I slide/open my droid3, and powering on my phone using the powerbutton+M-button on the keyboard, I am getting a menu with following lines:
Boot Mode Selection Menu (0A.53)
Vol Up Selects, Vol Down scrolls
Available Boot Modes:
Normal Powerup
Recovery
AP Fastboot
BP SBF Flash
BP Only
BP HW Diag & Boot AP
BP Tools
I can use the VolDown key to scroll and I scrolled to BP Tools and pushed the VolUp Button. But my device still boots up normally, I don't see any clockwork mod recovery menu or something like that. Damn it!
What am I doin' wrong? How can I access this Recovery Menu, so I will be able to perform a Nandroid Backup ???

Droid 3 has a locked bootloader. Which bootstrap do you have installed?
Rom manager is kinda useless for the d3, most roms aren't on it. Safestrap is the bootstrap of choice for d3. Il find a link

I downloaded this Safestrap version for my Droid 3 (Droid 3 :: v1.08 [ 2011-12-16 ]) and transferred it into my Droid3. Within my phone I open ES file explorer and tapped on this safestrap.apk and installed it.
I am using this how-to-instructions link for Safestrap by Hash Code. So far so good, I was able to perform a backup although I get a notice similar to "skipping /android.blabla no applications found". Hope this is ok. I verified the backup and md5 checksums seem to be ok.
I hope a have a valid backup of my stock ROM now

I am using this how-to-instructions link for Safestrap by Hash Code. So far so good, I was able to perform a backup although I get a notice similar to "skipping /android.blabla no applications found". Hope this is ok. I verified the backup and md5 checksums seem to be ok.

Yes you do, however the idea is that you should never need it, as you can't flash when safe mode is disabled, you have to activate safe mode. Because of this its pretty hard to mess your phone, as the stock rom never gets overwritten

I didnt understand perfectly yet how this safestrap/boot stuff works. I installed safestrap recovery, so far so good. I can access this boot menu as described in HashCodes HowTo. What happens if I enable safeboot in the menu? I am getting a warning that it cannot be undone.Why am I getting warned?I canceled it because I was not sure what to choose. Do I have something like a dual-boot menu when installing a custom ROM? That means I can install CM7 and also boot my stock Motoblur with all my actual settings and apps installed? And if I reboot the device I can boot for example CM7 and have a strict different system running with the apps and settings installed only on my CM7 portion?

Dualbooting is one (slightly inaccurate) way to look at it. I'm not sure which warning you are talking about, but i can explain a bit better. Safestrap is designed to keep a perfect copy of your original system at all times. As in better than a nandroid. So perfect that it is ALWAYS there. It is not modified in any way. Even if you flash something that you know will brick your phone, you can simply boot up safestrap and switch back to your original safe system.
This is different than dualbooting because it is not quite as easy to switch between systems as dualbooting is. As in you don't select one on start up and boot into the one of your choice at the same speed.

I have a LG Thrill that is stock ICS. If I boot the phone and check all the buttons the buttons work, however when I try to boot into recovery the phone just boots or turns off. I hold the 3d and volume down button then push the power button until a vibration and lg logo then release the power button. I've tried to go thru adb to reboot into recovery but I cannot see the device in adb.
Have you actually installed cwm recovery?

No, I'd love to be able to install CMW or TWRP but the guides I have found all say that I need to be able to boot into recovery.
You can install CWM (or TWRP) by flashing it with Fastboot, but you will need to place a recovery image file named "cwm.img" in the CWM folder in the Fastboot pack. Some available packs (check the Optimus 3D dev section, same device, Euro flavor) have the image files already included, I think.
The method I have mostly used is to flash xbsall's rooted ICS with recovery.

His rooted ICS uses a type of recovery that is in system partition (not recovery partition). So if you want that, or you do not want to flash your device, use Fastboot (or one of the customized variants)
First, thanks for the help. I now have superuser available and couldn't be happier. The reason I decided to do this was that I couldn't get the wifi to switch on and even with the super user access it won't. Should I assume that this is a problem with the phone or is this something that would work if I were to roll back to gingerbread?
It's most likely a problem with the ROM/kernel you're using. I'd switch to another.

I can't say thanks enough for holding my hand so far. Is there a good guide that you would recommend for me to look at. Some of the ones I've viewed here have different information for each of them. Is the reason that thus phone is so different from what I'm used to due to the omap processor?

I had the wifi problem a while back; it was due to me installing a custom ROM without doing required wipes in recovery before installing it. Not sure how you got to ICS, but if you follow the guide I linked above it should solve your problem. You don't have to install the custom ROM if you don't want. Just stop after installing rooted ICS. Be advised that driver install for pc is fiddly, hence the detailed install instructions.
Can anyonne throw me a line here. When I install the omap drivers for the phone (step f4.1-4.5) the phone still keeps disappearing from the device drivers. Even disconnecting and reconnecting with the volume up button pressed isn't helping. Any ideas? I've tried uninstalling all of the drivers, using system restore to roll back, different cables. It used to work, now it doesn't any ideas?
If you mean the way it keeps blinking on and off, be ready with the mouse. Watch for when it appears and quickly right click on it, you kind of have to catch it. Then point it to the driver in the Fastboot folder (not the one in the omap4flash installer folder) as described. Once that is done you unplug phone, then replug, volume up, and let the two LG drivers install. All LG stuff on pc should be uninstalled and pc rebooted before beginning with all this. Also, some antivirus software can mistake the driver as being malicious and delete it when unraring the Fastboot folder, without it notifying you. And if you have a custom bootloader on your phone you may need to skip running omap4flash installer; they seem to not agree somehow.
