Here's the story:
A while back, I rooted my Nexus One without unlocking using the bait and switch method, and had been using various custom ROMs.
Recently, the power button hasn't been working well, so I called HTC to get a swap. Obviously, before sending my phone back, I need to unroot it.
I tried to restore my phone using the method in the XDA guides, but it hung on each step, and it didn't actually do anything. So, I flashed the non-rooted stock ERE27 through ROM Manager (this, I suspect was a huge mistake.)
Now, I have an rooted phone, that fails on any update attempt and so is stuck on 2.1, and worse, Clockwork Recovery is still on there. I've tried to unroot my phone again using both the bait and switch method, and the freenexus method, but both have run into errors. I've also tried installing Universal Androot and clicking Unroot, but it just tells me my phone isn't rooted.
So, I can't root my phone to attempt to flash the recovery, and I can't find a way to remove Clockwork Recovery, but I need to send this phone back to HTC within the next 7 days, or else I'm gonna be out $530.
Any ideas?
First: hate to be a douche, but someone's gotta say it: this is the wrong subforum for a question thread. Take a quick glance over the rules stickied at the top of the forum. There's a Q&A forum for things like this.
Second: HTC has typically honored the warranty for known hardware problems (of which the power button is probably the biggest) even for unlocked/rooted devices. They find for me, no problems. So relax.
Last, try using ClockworkMod recovery to flash CM 6 stable, then from that ROM, try flashing back to stock recovery. After that you should be able to flash a stock OTA ROM. You can't change recovery without root access, which you can't get on a stock ROM. So you have to change recovery first. And on your new phone, you should really just fastboot OEM unlock. Trying to deceive HTC makes them not want to give us this option anymore.
Yup no worries I had to send mine in because the trackball got stuck and they got it under warranty ... I had my phone running a custom recovery and rom and they didn't even ask about it.
I think its a hard brick, absolutely nothing happens to my phone. No Power, no nothing. Basically, i flashed back to stock eclair, and everythign was running smoothly. I used titanium backup to delete all user apps, and then restore them (from my other backup). Then i got rom manager, installed CWM, and rebooted into it. I then installed the 3 button fix. Went back into eclair, and transferred the cm7 file into the internal sd. Then i rebooted again into recovery... But this time, i realized i had to go out, so i pressed reboot phone. And now nothing works at all.
Any ideas?
try to build jig first, or go to ebay, search for "micro usb jig" and buy one.

You tried button all the button combos and ADB? Also did you try plugging the phone in to give it a source of power? ... pull battery and try again.
Have you tried to hold volume down + power for DL mode?
How did you flash back to eclair and what from?
@Mengbo, my jig should be arriving in a few days. But i do have a bunch of resistors, il give that a shot.
@Coreym, Its been charging for hours (well im not sure, because it shows no signs) ADB doesnt work unless its connecting in debugging mode i believe, and the button combos dont work
@Studacris, its the method you told me because my phone is a 1012 build. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=979133
Any other suggestions? :S
EDIT : Just tried it with a jig, nothing happened.
may need to be JTAG'd. Couple guys doing that. Connexion2005 is debricking captivates and could probably help you as a last resort.
Hmm this is weird ... You used the rogers stock rom package first only right? That doesn't have bootloaders, then you flashed the 3 button fix with three gb bootloaders which should've bricked you right there ... But here is the weird part unless I've misread the sequence of events, you were able to boot into the OS after that, then booted into stock 2e recovery rebooted and thats where are now?
Yep, exactly. Also, how does the 3 button combo have GB bootloaders? I used to flash it to stock eclair all the time...
Oh wait I thought I read that you came from gingerbread at first, when you flashed to stock the first time. What were rom were you on when you first started?
Yeah, when i flashed back to stock, i was on GR-12 which is GB.
But then i successfully went back to stock, and eclair booted up just fine. Its after doing the whole CWM thing (on eclair) that this brick happened.
Ok that's what I thought. That's why this series of events is really weird. The way you flashed back to stock didn't contain bootloaders, so you still had the gb ones which is fine to run on eclair, but the 3 button fix contains only a eclair/froyo secondary bootloader no primary at all so it didn't overwrite the gb one, so a mix of a gb primary and eclair secondary should have bricked you right there no question. I have no idea how it booted after you flashed the 3 button fix.
Well that sucks. Any ideas on how to fix it? Is the JTAG fix the only option?
For the hell of it I've only heard this working once with a bootloader mix up:
remove battery
replace battery
DON'T PRESS ANY BUTTONS
insert jig
Now hold the volume buttons.
if that gets you to download mode use odin one click right away to restore both stock bootloaders, when that causes a bootloop because of your phone not liking one click, use the stock package you used before. But you need to use one click IF you ever get it in download mode. IF being the operative word, don't get your hopes up with this one.
Probably won't work but if it does, WIN!
Get a warranty replacement
(hint) kies
Otherwise if you don't have a warranty because it's used or whatnot jtag is the only thing that can fix it at this point.
haha, il give that a shot then. However, i sent my phone in (saying kies was the problem) about 2 weeks ago. Should i do the same thing again? Or would they catch on?
LOOOOL!
That's a good question ... They can't prove it wasn't kies, and to out right refuse a customer his warranty based on just speculation does not make good business sense.
Haha! I guess that's true. So i guess now my dilemna is, should i send it to Samsung and wait 2 weeks, or should i send it to mobiletechvideos, pay 50 bucks and recieve it back faster.
Do you know if the jtag would void the warranty for sure? (in a way that they would know its been voided)
Not sure, but if you're worried about that use the warranty while you still can cause the clock is ticking on that time limit...
^^ he's not kidding. Warrenty for all of us is almost up :/
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
That's funny, now I have a question: is the year warranty based on the initial release of the captivates so all of the warranties expire at the same time, is it based on build date of the phone, or is it based on original purchase date?
I'm guessing the first, which blows, but I'm not 100%
I would like to know what is the safest way to unroot because I want to root my phone but I want to have the best chances in case I need to send my phone to warranty.
Can you please show me the best way to do that?
(sorry if this question has been asked before but I needed to be completely sure)
Best regards.
if you flash your original rom via smartflash or kdz update it will be unrooted.
Trolling in the deep
I am no expert, but I think there is no "safest" way. I recommend you know how to unbrick your phone if something goes wrong. Once your phone is rooted and you have a harware failure, there will be no way to unroot it or to flash it, so LG will know it has been rooted. Now, if they will care that you rooted the phone but sent it in because their battery started leaking: I don't know.
If there is a hardware failure, they wont know, that you rooted it. Cause then you probably wont get further, as to the LG screen. They wont be able to boot any further, except he is unable to unbrick it... Otherwise, if you flash the stock ROM and do a factory reset, they will never know
Thank you all for the help you gave me.

Hi All,
Before I ask my question, I just wanted to clear up that I've searched the forums (both on the s3 i9300 and i9305 sub forums,) and there's so much info that I got a little more confused and lost my confidence, which is why I'm asking here before I start the procedure.
I've just realized that my power button is starting to wear causing a 'bootloop' when I press it 7 times out of 10, and I have the opportunity to get it fixed under warranty.
Now, I've been running custom software since June 2013 and my phone is an Australian Telstra i9305T, and I have made a backup on the ROM pre-rooted when I installed CWM (although I'm not sure that it may work, as the bootloop have corrupted my SD card, there's a few backups that didn't have the same MD5 and can't be run.)
I wanted to make sure that the steps I unroot and reset counter to 0 for warranty would be:
1) Go to CWM
2) Wipe the cache/memory.(factory reset.)
3) Install the rom I backed up in May 2013
4) Triangle Away to set counter to 0.
5) Use the Unified Android tookit's unroot function.
Does that sound right? Or have I missed any steps.
FYI I had the phone inspected at the Samsung Experience store but the lady had threw a tantrum as she noticed I was running custom software, and pretty much refused to talk to me, (she wasn't even a tech, but I guess got upset on tampering principle,) so I want to make sure when it goes back to the techs it's ok to get fixed.
Any help I can get here would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance folks.

the steps are quite in good order. you dont have the new bootloader with knox i guess.. cause that would be a problem if the knox counter is triggered you cant set it back to 0, there is still no way found to restore knox counter for devices with new bootloader. everyone who has void knox warranty status can forget about sending device to samsung for repair for any reason!
if you havent flashed recently a new 4.3 firmware from sammobile or samsung-updates.com, you probably have the old bootloader which is good.
if you were not rooted when you made the backup in may 2013, then you will automatically be unrooted when restoring backup otherwise you would need to unroot after the backup restore. the backup will restore it to its state exactly how it was in may 2013. after the restore of backup go in odin downloadmode and check what info does it give in the left upper corner about system and binary status, should be both showing official and for the flash counter use triangle away indeed but keep in mind that it does not always restore to 0, sometimes it restores to 1 and thats no good.

Yeah.. I think I rooted the phone before the knox bootloader came out for my phone, although I can't remember as it was a year ago.
So I guess at this stage the steps I'd take here would be:
1) Triangle away to reset counter to 0
2) Go into CWM clear the memory, and put in the unrooted image.
I've now got another question on the steps:
1) Currently using Triangle away, the counter only stays at 1, and every time I boots it shows the red '!' on the top left corner. That's not knox is it? And if it isn't, when I flash the unrooted image, will it get rid of it?
2) How do to revert to the regular stock recovery, as I've installed CWM. Or will the unrooted image handle that... if I recall the steps to rooting is installing custom recovery (CWM in my case) then taking the image with CWM then rooting then installing custom software.....
Again thanks for you help, I hope you can see where I get confused, I love this forums it's got so much help but sometimes it's hard to work out what to filter to make things go smoother.

1. i dont know about the ''red !'' but it seems like you have done something wrong, it shouldnt show something like that..
the backup img might solve it, but dont now for sure
2. to revert back to stock recovery you could do this: flash official firmware with odin OR find a flashable stock recovery .img or .tar md5 file to flash in recovery. easiest way is to flash official firmware, that will restore everything to ''out of the box state'' and for the counter using triangle away (only thing is it restore's it to 1 instead of 0 )
if you ask me how i would make this whole thing ready and steady for sending to samsung, i would do this:
assuming here that i have old bootloader without knox, the steps would be for me in this order:
- put every personal stuff in internal or external sd to my pc temporary
- reset flash counter with triangle away
- go in cwm recovery and wipe everything, i mean really EVERYTHING. after that put phone off and go in downloadmode
- download the official firmware that my phone came with (for me that was android 4.1.2 no KNOX!) when first bought, and flash that with odin. now i have installed official firmware with stock recovery and device status is official and counter reset to 0 or 1
everything restored back to normal except the counter that stays on 1 unfortunately ready to send for repair, but i doubt they will accept it
i do understand your confusion about what to do, as in many threads people telling their own way of handling and taking steps to get things done and that can be very confusing as there are many things one could do. when trying to help people, i always try to provide the most common solutions and most easy one, but no matter how i tell and explain if you are someone who does not know much about android development kind of things, you will have always difficulties. the key for understanding is lots of READING and RESEARCH followed finally by executing what you have learned with proper tools. im just a member for couple of months now but i have followed these forums for many years and im glad i did..

Okay, so now what you're telling me, which is contrary to what I've been reading previous to this is that there is no way to get the phone back to stock for warranty repair as they won't accept it due to the counter being at 1.
(Would this be knox?)
Thanks for your answers tho', I really appreciate them usually my posts get ignored, prolly filed under the "another noob" section.
The thing is I'm not that much of a noob, I just have a hard time trying to put all the info together so I can take the most optimal and risk adverse solution. As for reading and research, xda is a great forum but I can keep reading 8 hours a day for 3 months and keep going because as you said everyone has their own way of doing things and explaining things.
Maybe it's not worth for me to send my phone under warranty if they're going to reject it anywaysy... *sigh*
Despite not being able to help a lot, I would just like to chime in that I have the little red exclamation mark aswell, and I have never installed the Oficcial 4.3 with Knox. So at least its not related to that.
I do have a custom Recovery and I am running a Rooted stock image.
The exclamation mark has not caused me any issues though..

Well it definitely does help, so thanks.
Can I ask if you've sent your phone in for warranty repairs?
I think it has to do with having custom recovery.

Unfortunately not (for you, fortunately for me).. My first i9305 actually had a defective power button which died the day after I got it. I had rooted it already, but was able to roll the original image back on the phone before handing it in. The store swapped it right away for a new one though, so it never turned into a repair case.
Hi all,
I have a redmi 2 and planning to buy the Mi5. I dont like using miui. I know that rooting doesnt void the warranty but does flashing custom roms affect warranty? Like if something happens to the phone while its on a custom rom and am not able to revert back to the stock rom before giving it to service centre?
You can unlock the bootloader and root your phone, no problem with it.
If install some custom rom, brick your phone and you can not revert to stock... you may have some issues while claiming warranty.

Rooting doesn't affect warranty, but as far as I know, your warranty is voided if you install other ROMs than custom MIUI builds. But today is nearly impossible to completely hard brick your device if you know what your doing. My advice is that you do a backup of your sensitive information (efs for instance) and flash only ROMs that you can trust works well. There's a lot of choices now that MI5 kernel is out in the wild

I was actually thinking about hardware issues. Like display not working. It happened to my redmi while it was in warranty. But luckily i was using miui rom at the time.
I faced problems about reboot on Mi5. while having power off to the set, a mi recovery ( 1. Reboot 2. Wipe data 3.Connect with Mi assistant) option has been notified on the black screen and takes a long time to back in the screen option). volume key (up) and power button also sometimes inactive. How can these issue be recover as earlier?
