Whats the easiest way to backup the S-Memo data. Using it for meetings and with the new ROM's I would like to backup the data. Where is the data held?

Google sync does not work properly. If there are no memos on the phone and you try to sync back from google docs then it inserts the notes as pictures within notes. After a couple of such syncs the original note becomes a picture in a picture in a note. Needless to say the loss in resolution makes it impossible to read them.
A friend has the same problem so it is not just me. Does anyone know of a solution? The best would have been a folder that could simply be on the sdcard. I love using the S Memo application and just wish they had given some thought to the storage issue.

for me syncing with "evernote" works fine, it also gives me the option to edit notes on the pc and sync it back to my phone, it is quite nice as my secretary shares a folder with me and she can send me in real time notes.
Unlike to Google evernote is really syncing, but this means if you delete a not or Snote then it is going to be deleted on the phone as well.

I have found a method of backing up the drawings / text from S-Memo exactly as they are (as in you are still able to draw and erase on them) but the backup process isn't exactly "easy".
NB: Now I am just going to assume that users who are reading this have never heard of Titanium Backup or are not familiar with the program.

To backup S-Memo data:
1. Go into your app drawer and open the file explorer program My files (or any other file management program you have like Astro or ES etc).
2. Navigate to your external SD storage (/sdcard/External_SD) and create a folder there called Titanium (or any other name you desire). Once that's done you can exit.
3. Then you need to download the app Titanium Backup Free or Pro (Free version from Google Play here), Install.
4. Open Titanium Backup > click your phone's menu button > Preferences.
5. Select Backup folder location. Now, using your phone's back button to (suprise!) go back, navigate to the folder you created in step 1 of this guide (if you followed the guide it will be in /sdcard/External_SD/Titanium. After you are inside the folder you created, select Use the current folder. Now hit your phone's back button.
6. Still in Titanium Backup app, select the Backup / Restore tab from the top.
7. Scroll down and find the S-Memo app (screenshot 1 attached below). Single-tap it, then press the Backup ! button (screenshot 2).
8. Done!
p.s. Just a quick explanation of what we did, essentially we created a folder for Titanium Backup to store its backup files in a place that is not on the internal SD. Therefore if we decide to do a full system wipe which included the internal SD (whether deliberately or accidentally) our backup data would not be wiped with it (I think the default Titanium Backup location is /sdcard/TitaniumBackup i.e. on the internal SD for our phone).

To restore S-Memo data:
1. Install Titanium Backup again (remember we wiped our phones, so the app is gone?).
2. Same process as steps 4 and 5 from above: Open Titanium Backup > phone's menu button > Preferences > Backup folder location > navigate to /sdcard/External_SD/Titanium (or wherever you saved it) > Use the current folder.
3. Now hit your phone's back button > then press the Backup / Restore tab.
4. Find the S-Memo app > select it > press Restore (screenshot 3). When you're done you can exit Titanium Backup.
Now here is where it gets interesting...
5. Open S-Memo... and you may notice the drawings / text you have created have been restored, but have one of the following problems:
- Image missing from the note preview.
- Only part of the image is visible in the note preview.
- The image preview is displaying something random.
This is what has happened: The drawings / text you have created from before have been restored, but the preview of the drawing / text has not been updated on your new system (I have no idea where S-Memo stores that). So if you select the drawing / text, it is an exact copy of the original, but you just can't see it in the S-Memo preview.
6. To get that preview back, do the following:
For drawings: Open the drawing > draw something (like a dot) > then you can erase it during the same drawing session > click Save.
For text: Open the text > type a letter or something > delete it during the same drawing session > click Save.
7. Now the preview of the note should accurately reflect the contents of the note!

I'm not sure if there is another easier method than this, but I have been using this method successfully through multiple wipes (I should really stop messing around with system files ) to restore my S-Memos perfectly. A very long, but (I'm pretty sure!) a garuanteed method to work. If anyone else has another method do let us know.

You could try to search on the file system for the folder where the files are stored by the app.
Then use a file restore program to try and undelete the files.
ANd oh yeah, make BACKUPS! then you would not be in this situation (yes it is stating the obvious).
I have some additional info for users who update there Note app to the newer version.
You can use the same procedure as above to restore data + app.
Just rename the Smemo.apk, do a restore of app+data, remove the restored app, rename the newer Snote app to it's normal name and start it.
You will see some conversion, then it works (at least it did for me).
To restore the preview images, back up the /Sd Card/S-memo folder before you flash, then overwrite with your backup afterwards. The thumbnails / Previews are stored as ordinary JPGs.
Now if only I can manage to extract that folder from my nandroid backup... :silly:
why not use Titanium backup pro's cloud sync option - you can password protect all files too.
Even if my phone dropped to the bottom of the sea, i will always have my contacts, cal, apps and selected folders backed up and password protected online.
I have not tried restoring S memo data, but im sure TB pro will restore it fine.

Ok I keep seeing people sayiing to backup apps+data but be careful about system data. Well every time I do an upgrd to the new sre and restore my titbu and I am constantly having to redo my gmail stuff and isp email stuff. I have accounts checked in the backup section.
Can someone that does stuff like this regularly post like a nice simple howto with good steps as to what to check in titbu so that doing something in titbu doesn't bork something when we flash the new sre. Its getting old having to put my gmail info and isp info in every flash to get that stuff back.
So a 104 views and not one offer of help. Well guess I take that as noone knows much about titanium backup to help a poor soul

Tips & Suggestions for using Titanium Backup:
When you start Titanium Backup on a new ROM, if you have any doubt about your busybox version, it is highly recommended that you click the "Problems?" button before doing any backup or restore !
Don't forget to verify your backups (Click MENU - Batch) to ensure that your backups are OK.
You need to reboot after restoring system items (eg: Contacts, SMS, Settings, etc) for the changes to take effect. If you backup/restore across very different ROMs, I advise to be cautious and only include the system items you really need to preserve.
You can easily create a custom apps list by creating a Label in Apps Organizer, then going back to Titanium Backup, clicking "MENU" and then "Filters" and finally, selecting the Label you want. Your apps list will then be filtered just the way you want
If you backup the same app several times, Titanium Backup will save SD card space by storing each apk version only once.
After restoring your apps, you can run the Market Doctor to verify their Market links. If Market Doctor reports everything as okay, yet your apps are still not listed in "My Downloads", try to search for them in the Market. If they show as "Installed", it confirms that the links are okay, but your Market needs a refresh: just install any app from the Market, and the "My Downloads" section will be refreshed !
If you want to remove a system app, first you can try to freeze it and see if everything still works fine. Once you've gained more confidence that you don't need it, just go ahead and un-install that system app.
How to make your first backup:

Verify that Titanium Backup has started without warning and that your busybox is OK
Click the Backup/Restore tab
Click Menu (the button), Batch
Click "Backup all user apps"
Let it run, then go back
Individually backup the system data you want. That is most green-colored items. This will be bookmarks, call log, calendar, launcher, WiFi, etc.
Now your backups are in the "TitaniumBackup" directory on your SD card.
How to restore your backups after installing a ROM (if you wiped your phone):
Download Titanium Backup from Market
Click the Backup/Restore tab
Click Menu (the button), Batch
Click "Restore all missing apps + system data
Reboot your phone
It's done ! The only thing you may have to adjust is usually your wallpaper/widgets.
How does this work? I have a full Titanium Backup and I remove a few Apps if I do Full backup again will my Removed Apps be totally gone in the Backup Folder or are they still there from Original Backup? If they are still in the Backup is there a way to get them out so if I need to restore the Removed Apps don't reappear on my phone?

They will remain there.
To remove them you can either scroll to the bottom in Backup/Restore and select each one then hit "Delete" or Menu->Batch->"Delete backups for un-installed apps" then Menu->Refresh apps list
To batch restore apps without restoring specific ones Menu->Batch->"Restore all apps with data" then uncheck the apps you don't want to restore, and begin.

To MAKE SURE they are still there you need to HIT the menu button once you have opened up Titanium Backup, then HIT Preferences, scroll down to MAX BACKUP and change it from the default (1) to whatever hou want/need. I have mine set to three. This way it can save older versions of the appear. I have found that on occasion the newer version of apps sometimes have an issue so I go and use the previous version saved. This will also keep your uninstalled appear at the bottom with a line through them. You can usually just click on the lined through app and hit restore. Then choose either app or app+data. Also I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND the paid version. It will do the batch restore with one click of the restore appear+data. The free version will also batch restore them all but it goes through each app and you have to say okay each time for each app. Specially if you start trying out different rims every couple days like a lot of us do. Also the paid version (not sure.of the free version) let's you back it up to the external sd card. You just go to preferences, backup folder name, then type in external_sd/ in front of the TitaniumBackup that is already there and it will automatically change it to mnt/sdcard/external_sd/TitaniumBackup.
JUST MAKE SURE whenever you restore NEVER choose to restore system app and data. ONLY restore app+data or you will end up with force closes.

I do not have the paid version but I have a question about the free version. After I backup all the apps and system data, I removed a system application such as "My Files" which didn't cause any problems. If I try to click on the backed up (crossed off in TB) to restore it, I do not have the option to restore.
Is this normal or should I be able to restore a system application that I have backed up?
I've never restored a system app, and maybe that's a paid feature. If there isn't a simpler method, it's pretty easy to copy back in if you're running a custom rom.
Open the customrom.zip, copy system/apps/MyFiles.apk from it and put it in /system/app on the phone.
There are around 50 way to do that. Via USB copy the file to the phone and then use Root Explorer to copy it from /sdcard to /system/apps for example. If you don't see it again in the apps folder, reboot.
I never thought to open the custom rom zip file. thank you!

I've done the TiBu backup but don't see quickoffice in the backup file. Does anyone know why?
Hey guys whats the best way or is there a way to restore all your contacts and text messages after rom flash. After every flash I have to redo all my contacts with photos and lose all texts, I use titanium back up for the apps but they say not to restore system data with tibu. thanks
The green system settings should be ok to restore, [sms/mms/apn] dialer storage will have your texts,.and contact storage will have your contacts.
Just restore those individually. Works for me.
i keep all my contacts in google so i never have to restore those, and for sms/mms/call log backup and restores i use

I use My Backup Root. When you back up Data (not apk data), you are given a choice of what you want to back up. When you restore data, you are also given a choice of what to restore.
When you restore APK+ Data, you are restoring data from the apks, not system data (with My Backup, TiBu may be different).
The only downside to my backup is most roms don't preload it like tibu. You gave to download from market after every flash.

Android Manager for me. No Google cloud needed. Also, you can export your contacts to a .vcf file before you flash and restore from it after. Do this within the Contacts app.

It backs up your home screen, minus widgets. But I think it only works on touchwiz launchers.
And you can back up almost everything, contacts sms, apps, etc.for a detailed list, look on the market page.
If I'm wrong, those with more knowledge please clarify.

today as a first step I have successfully rooted my Phone (Froyo 2.2.1) with CF-Root Kernel and Odin, yay! Thanks to all the Developers, Guides and Refs on this page!!
In order to fix my ongoing battery issues,next thing I want to try is to flash a new ROM; I think for stability and for practice the latest Froyo Build JS8! I have downloaded Titanium Backup and have successfully backed up all my system and user apps and settings.
Now when I flash the new ROM, the phone will be wiped, or at least the Wipe-method is recommended (hard-reset AFTER the flashing?).
Can I restore at least some settings and apps with my Titanium Backup Files (I read restoring system apps/settings is not recommended)?
How would I do that (where does Titanium save the backup files?)
How do you guys usually perform the steps to a new ROM without losing all system settings, apps, app-settings etc...?

I would recomend you, restore user apps only. It will restore your apps and their settings. You could do it in batch mode.
Also is recomended to copy your TitaniumBackup folder to PC
Last but not least, do not forget copy your EFS folder too.

1) Get titanium backup PRO.
2) Batch backup your whole system (while you're at it, create a schedule so your phone automatically gets backed up at least once/week). The files will go on your sd card in a TitaniumBackup folder (actually you can specify where they go).
3) Go and nuke your phone with whatever.
4) Re-install Titanium backup, then batch restore your USER apps & settings. Leave the system settings alone for now.
5) Okay for system settings, be a bit more selective:
6) Go to Backup/Restore tab, select menu, then filters, then apply a Filter by Type: System.
7) Anything in GREEN is system settings (red=system applications).
8) I typically restore the following: Contacts/Call-logs; SMS/MMS/APN; Bookmarks; SMS/MMS Preferences; Wifi Access Points; Calendar Storage (think that includes your alarm clock settings).
Note that you may need to reboot before you see the restore take effect - e.g. you can't see your restored sms till after reboot.
Also it's safest to grab a copy of your titanium backup folder and put it on your computer. Lookup how to get a copy of your /efs too.

Okay, I figured out how to backup the /efs folder via ADB shell.

You could convert it technically. But generally it's not advised as it may mess up settings or so on a different ROM. I backed up my system stuff but I doubt I'll restore it on any ROM, the hassle isn't worth it if any issue shows up and you have to check everything out to fix it. Maybe some individual system thingies can be restored safely but keep in mind lots of system stuff changes on each ROM and could be incompatible.
Just like others did here, I also recommend the PRO version as you have to click every single restoration on a batch restoration otherwise (and it's probably slower anyway).
Freezing means just that, it freezes the app. It "deactivates it", so it's not there/usable but it's not uninstalled. Can't think of a scenario right now where this would be useful except for testing purposes, maybe if an app causes an issue and you want it to be gone temporarily or so.
If you don't want an app to continue running simply use the task manager to kill it which comes along with the SGS (Samsung app afaik, usually pre installed).
Btw Titanium has a nice wiki website which is really helpful but can't link it as a new user here. Google Titanium Backup wiki and the first link should be the correct one.
Correct me if I'm wrong but if you do a app+data restore the app doesnt show up in the market under installed which means that any updates to the app wont get rolled out.
What I did was install each of my apps from the market then did only a data restore. This worked for most of my apps BUT last night I noticed a few of my apps missing, in fact launching my angry birds from simi folder caused a FC. BUT I know that angry birds was working earlier in the day.
So I simply went back to the market and reinstalled and all seems well again.
So now I'm wondering what is the best method to restore, my method or maybe do a app+data restore then go to the market and install the app again.
Afaik, normally Titanium also backs up the links for the markets so the entries won't get lost and should be restored as well. There was an issue mentioned which can happen if that data gets corrupted. The Titanium wiki lists it.
Generally, installing the app from the market and then restoring it should work just fine.

You can restore your apps once on ICS using Titanium, but never system stuff. However, you might run into problems if you do that, depending on your ICS Rom. It's better to do a clean app install instead. Here's what you could do to make the process quick and painless:
1. download and install any explorer with root permissions if you don't have it already
2. create a folder called 'Apps' (or 'My Apps' or whatever) on your SD card
3. go back to /data/app folder (this is where all user apps are located)
4. multi select everything you plan to use on ICS, then 'copy'
5. browse to the /Apps folder on your SD card, then 'paste' - now you have backed up everything you need
6. flash ICS Rom of your choice
7. download and install Android Assistant from Playstore, run it
8. AA has 'Batch Install' option, tap it; AA will automagically find all your backup apps and install them in one go

After you do the above, you can then restore data only (not apps) from TB.
That way all your app content, saved games etc. should be as they were on GB.

You can do it with titanium too.
After flashing ICS, just install titanium and select batch option - Restore missing application.
Now check the list manually, if any application that was part of system application on GB, just un tick that.
Now this will restore only user appl safely.
PS : I have marked that If you restore Opera browser with app+data option, it getting crash. in that case just wipe data for opera, and will work fine.
Does this procedure works the other way.
