Hi. I have a newly purchased SGS which runs android 2.1. When I connect it to my laptop via the usb cable and run Kies, I get a message in bold letters saying "This version of the device cannot be updated", in the firmware information tab.
It shows "Current firmware version: PDA:JG8 / PHONE:JG2 / CSC:JG9 (DBT)"
I want to upgrade to 2.2 and 2.3, or directly to 2.3 (if possible), without rooting my phone.
This phone is purchased from Saudi Arabia and did not have the Market app, Youtube app, Maps app and Navigation app initially. But when I selected restore factory settings from settings menu, I got all of the above apps installed automatically.
I have latest version of Kies installed.
Please, please help me how to upgrade without rooting my device.
If you want, you can download the latest UK Gingerbread XXJVT ROM from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1289875
then follow the steps to manually flash a new ROM from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723596
Thanks for the reply. I found the "how to install guide" in the first link itself. Gotta take some time though to get it installed as I have a pretty slow connection.
Just make sure you back up you data before flashing!
I Swyped this on my Galaxy S
I have downloaded the following files:
i9000XXJVT.zip (android 2.3.5) &
Semaphore_kernel_JVT_1.8.2bm.tar
I have read the how to guide and want to instal the new firmware!
Am I good to go?
waiting for reply !
How about Odin? I see that you chose the BM version of Semaphore, just take note that it'll screw up your 720p video recording.
I Swyped this on my Galaxy S
Hi sorry about replying so late. Busy in exams! Well I downloaded odin 1.83 from a website (don't remember the name). And I downloaded the normal version of semaphore too.
Hey.... Thanx for being patient with me! I was quite upset to see that my phone would not be upgraded but now I believe that the latest firmware for my device is only a few clicks away! Thanx alot.
So am I ready? To flash?
It's our carriers fault for not providing the latest firmware, UK usually gets the latest firmwares first.
Yes you are ready to flash. Just take note that by installing the semaphore kernel, your phone will be immediately rooted, just reminded you because of what you've written in your first post.
Just follow the steps on flashing a firmware then after that, flash Semaphore kernel.
Good luck! I hope you'll love your new firmware. The performance improvement will be very noticeable compared your current Eclaire FW.

Hi... I just flashed my SGS!! Everything looking good!!
Wanted to ask, do I have to "wipe Cache partition" and "wipe data/factory reset"? Its given in the how to install guide.
And i have downloaded the JVT phone fix But I dont know how to install it.

Don't bother with the phone fix unless you really have constant phone force closes, because it might make the problem worse. If you had wiped everything before flashing, you don't have to wipe again.
Also, I noticed that you downloaded semaphore's kernel. But you said you didn't want to root your device. Well, semaphore's kernel, as well as all custom kernels here, are rooted. So, if you don't want root, just flash only the files from that JVT.zip which you downloaded.
Yes. I understood that. And I still don't want to root but a member of the forum said I should make an efs-backup since I'm flashing for the first time. Thats why I downloaded the semaphore kernel. Have not yet touched that though.
Is it okay without the efs-backup? I have flashed my phone and its working almost fine. Only thing is Boot up is pretty slow and after start-up, I get a message about some service (related to samsung) has stopped working.
Rest of it, I'm loving it! Its fast!!
Hi All, I've had this Samsung Galaxy Note for a few weeks now and have read over the rooting posts several times. Firstly I am 2.3.6, I realised I cannot directly root this phone and will need to downgrade, I've found the links with info and stock roms... however what I am not sure about is the specific version.
I really don't want to brick the phone!!!
Baseband Version: N7000XXLA4
Kernel Version: 2.6.35-7-N7000XXLA6-CL907341
[email protected]#2
I did find an LA6 rom but could not find one with the same modem version. Also going back to the old directly rootable roms, there is a huge choice, none of which match what I have so far... so really just wanting to know to work out which one to pick while keeping root and getting to version I have now??
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
Is there a specific reason for keeping the reason you have?
The reason am asking is because you can use the pre rooted ROMs in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025
And you will end up with a newer ROM and root..
Modem is not an issue, you can flash the type you want and suits you best after accomplishing root..
No I guess not... just all is working well as it is but was just concerned about general compatibility but will give the europe one a go. Thanks
Aztec_Uk,
Did you manage to root your Note ?
I'm on the same build as you and would like to get rid of all my bloat ?

Hi, have to say I haven't worked up the courage to do it yet... I wish I could root and do a backup before playing... but the only way is to either downgrade as in other post or use these pre-rooted roms... this debating what to do... I really don't want to brick it or goto something I cannot roll back, as it works great at the moment but obviously bloatey and no root.....
Take courage!
@Aztec_UK and DblCng, just over a week ago I was where you are. Take heart, if you encounter problems and post them here clearly, there are some really expert and generous XDA members here who will help you. I will even try myself if I see you encountering something I ran into.
I opted for the Chainfire method and in this thread. starting at post #1170 you can read an almost blow-by-blow account of what I encountered and the help I got. Thanks list in post #1220. I didn't expect it to be all plain sailing and it wasn't. I do advise you to make sure you have enough time before you start - in the end it took me most of 3 days (and nights). Another tip I haven't found anywhere (though it's almost certainly here somewhere) is to forward your calls to somewhere else before you start. You don't want people ringing you on the phone when you're in the middle of rooting it.
My Note is now rooted and running just fine, and I'm having a great time zapping bloatware and foiling phone-homers.

Hi syncopath, thanks for replying... seems like a very friendly and helpful place.
I have a work colleague who was also like you and like I am now... then to get proxy support he rooted.... Then he took a while to eventually take the plunge and go for ICS 4.04... It was this week he came into my office and said... I've done it... sat there for 10 mins crossing fingers.
He had a slightly older stock rom on his note, it meant he could do a direct root without flashing and he also was able to do a good backup via root method...
I think the thing holding me back is that fact I can't make that solid back... I have to flash first... believe me I have hacked about with lots of phones and firmwares in my time, HTCs, Blackberrys, Nokia and done a jailbreak on an iPhone 4S... somehow this time around it's taking me longer to work the courage up, I've read a few posts on here.. of people ending up with a brick and no warranty... I just dread this situation... or if something should go wrong later I'd want to un-root so I had warranty... Any advice what any of you guys would do in my situation.. believe me I want root and to try ICS... I am twitchy! - just a bloated stock rom with no root is better than a brick/paper weight!!

I have the same model with LA4 modem and LA6 kernel. Use the XEU file from the pre rooted thread here as posted above, works perfect. The modem in that file is indeed an LA4, but like matius44 says you can flash any modem. For no wipe only flash the PDA file with PC Odin.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025
After that you can download mobile odin pro from the market and flash the ICS repack leak. Make sure to select the 3 root options in mobile odin before going to the repack or you will lose your root. The LA4 modem seems fine in ICS, but i did try the newest modem as well.
I followed the instructions for a clean install in the ICStunner thread. Make sure to read down to post #4.Stick with 1.4.19 if you choose stunner. Awsome smooth stable rom.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1552554
It's safe to flash back to that GB pre rooted rom from ICStunner as well.
Go for it, my phone has never been better and ICStunner is amazing.

Hi Kushracer
Your post was well put out and friend, will tick thanks button in a minute... ok, I followed step one.. put into download mode, already downlodeaded the rom you suggested before a few days ago... and PC Odin too... So, I did as you suggested and flashed just the PDA part... crossed fingers, it rebooted and I can confirm thanks to you I am rooted!!!
Before I go for next step I am going to ensure I do backup everything as much as possible and will be trying ICS tomorrow!!!
Your right I feel so much better... that was not that bad... and just the PDA section is replaced the same with Rooted!... Your advice did help me get the confidence to hit the button... Well pleased
Will keep you posted tomorrow on my next step... for me this is enough for the minute, got more time tomorrow so will have a long backup/ICS session then
Thanks
Aztec_UK... now with rooted Note!
Well this time yesterday I had a rooted Samsung Galaxy Note.... Now... not only do I have full Root, I now have CWM, ICS 4.04 and LP6 kernel... phew!! thanks to all for your help
Cool
Sweeeet! Hope you enjoy it as much as me. Just waiting on the official release so I can run a modded version of that now
On another note--- Backup your EFS partition! The stunner thread had the info so I hope you did that just in case.

Ok first of all I did follow the part of bodivas reply to me (thanks again!) I used one of the Stock Odex Pre Rooted ROMs..
found here:- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025
I chose:- 3*Files No-Wipe N7000XXLA6_N7000OXEULA1_XEU Europe (03/02/2012)
downloaded and flashed via PC Odin... Crossed fingers and it worked, I had FULL root!
Then I Followed part of the second link as:- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1552554 I followed the part about backing up my EFS (highly recommended!!) - that was as far as I went that night..
The following day I spoke to a work collegue... and went a different root to flash ICS.. I downloaded ICS Stunner 1.4.19 then used this method:- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1614443 You must follow it step by step and I had to do a CF-Root to get CWM and then after that flashed Abyss to get RedPill... from there I flashed ICS and LP6 rooted kernel..
However I have noticed I do have root but I cannot write or mouse system for write access... so I have not got full root... I have re-read what to do about this and may need to reflash a different rom, however I already tested re-flashing first link with PC Odin which gives me GB Full root after ICS, so I am gonna play for a bit and retry this later... but you do have a quite safe roll back..
I was scared as hell to do any of this and a few days ago had a stock Samsung and did not want to root or reflash... I think as long as you follow instructions, check other users posts on how they get on, make sure your battery is charged, use a UPS or laptop with good battery (incase of power cut) then you should be ok, but you do take a risk of ending up with a brick, my biggest fear... so far trying to get full root I've re-done this 3 times!
Happy I did and think it's worth it as this rom is nice, thinking of trying 1.4.26 soon...
Hope this helps and good luck...
Same procedure... with ICS 1.26.1 .... now full root! - But nice safe way of trying ICS...... Looks like I gottta get the hang of Mobile Odin....
2 days ago I was scared but now I have the confidence to flash the rom on SGN
thanks for your info, i was very flash happy when on desire z i have flashed almost all the roms. but galaxy note seems slight different, but glad to see at least you get root work, i might just root and remove bloatware first and see how smooth it is, will think about flashing rom later might even just wait for ota ics
Aztec that was good of you but as long as u know how i feel that i have galaxy note and i cant do anything no root no ics can u help me about it by controlin my pc or tellin me what to do i need to root it so bad and i have kernal that doesn't let me root so i have to downgrade thats all the info that i have so if u have anytime free to help me i would be really thankfull because am sure u know how i feel or anyhelp on msn or skype chat that would be great

Ok, Guys my first post here in XDA, Forgive me For any Liable Mistakes I do!
So, here's the story , There's this friend of mine Who has A Galaxy Tab GT-P1000 , OS version Was Froyo 2.2. So he wanted get all the glory by upgrading it to 2.3.3 gingerbread, And He screwed it up. I dunno to what extent , he used odin to upgrade. . and the problem here is he did it more than 6 or 7 times, now it doesn't even boot up, white screen while switching it on , and yes it is able to go to the download mode so i guess its a softbrick. .and now him getting all scared he asked me to Get it all back to normal, so i used odin 1.7 saw the How to's here at XDA followed every procedure to upgrade it to 2.3.3. And it was a Big PASS. but when it rebooted it always loops at the boot where Samsung logo appears.
now we both do not know the exact version of the PDA files to download from Sammobile firmwares as the thing is bricked! from the first place!
now , all i wanna do is either just get it back to stock 2.2 and then Follow every step correctly to upgrade it to 2.3.3 or better or Directly go to a Newer version!
without any hassle. Please do let me know if a similar thread is Availaible , cause i searched a few and i couldn't find one which legitimizes with my problem
Help is delightfully Appreciated!
Thanks In Advance Guys
My recommendation, since you can still reach Download mode.
restock using Overcome Method:
Go to overcome site
Http://www.teamovercome.net
Read the guide,
Missing pictures can be seen here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20974872
Follow the picture step by step.
Basically to restock:
Download GB-stock-safe-v5.zip, unzip it and and flash with ODIN according to the guide.
Stop there and you will have Gingerbread JQ1
You can continue with the rest, and you will get Overcome 4.1 and you won't regret.
From there you can then try ICS AOKP or CM9, all requires you to have Overcome Kernel with its CWM recovery to flash.
priyana!
I will follow that. And Update about it Alright!
And thanks a Ton For the help!
Hi guys,
First of all, I apologize in advance if this isn't the correct place and/or thread title for my question. I've rarely posted in this forum as I'm usually able to find what I'm looking for.
I'll try to describe the issue fully so bear with me. If you're not patient, skip the next two paragraphs and go to the problem.
I bought my Galaxy S more than two years ago; back then it had Android 2.1 and I believe I also flashed to 2.1.1 via Samsung Kies.
I later flashed Froyo via Odin, rooted with 1ClickLagFix and installed a ton of apps. I haven't updated anything for more than a year, perhaps year and a half. I recently uninstalled many applications I wasn't using, including the lag fix, unrooted and began preparing to flash something newer. I didn't have the time though, so I dropped the project, and besides, the phone is working much smoother without all the unnecessary crap I had before.
Yesterday I decided to finish the job and flash DarkyROM 11 Black Edition. I rooted the phone again using Z4root, installed CWM ROM Manager and flashed CW recovery. I need the recovery in order to flash CM9 and then the ROM per the installation instructions for DarkyROM.
At this point I might as well wait for v.12, but I'll still need the CW recovery I guess. Or I may flash v.11 as planned; I still haven't decided.
The problem: CW recovery is flashed, but when I reboot I go to 3e recovery instead (tried with the 3 buttons or boot to recovery from ROM Manager, same result). I then copied the CW recovery file directly on the SD card and renamed it update.zip (it was recovery-update.zip) and tried to apply it. Didn't work. As far as I remember it said it couldn't verify file integrity or something. I can check for sure if you'd like.
Here's what I'm running (I'll put what I see, let me know if you need more):
GT-I9000
Firmware: 2.2
Baseband version: I9000XXJPP
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9
[email protected] #1
Build number: FROYO.XFJP7
ROM Manager (installed v. 5.5.1.4 yesterday) says current recovery is ClockworkMod 2.5.1.2.
I'd appreciate any insight. I don't have much experience flashing my phone, so if you have a solution, it would be best to include not only links to relevant threads but also an explanation as to what steps I should follow in my specific case.
Thanks in advance!

Can't do... Kies cannot upgrade the firmware since I'm on a custom ROM (or because it didn't match my country, I don't quite remember the reason).
I was following the installation instructions for DarkyROM for Froyo; it says I should have it rooted with CWM and use the recovery to flash CM9 and the ROM itself afterwards, so I believe Froyo isn't the issue. The kernel perhaps? Have no idea, I'm a novice more or less. I do know how to follow instructions though, so I'm not a complete idiot
Besides geting a newer ROM with newer Adnroid version I'd also like to clean up the mess I've been creating for the past year and a half. Maybe flashing a stock ROM and then DarkyROM would be easier. I'm looking for the most time-efficient method.
hey guys just grabbed this samsung galaxy s captivate from a friend whos dad found in las vegas sooo i guess its mine now, i have no plan on using it as my phone just for developement but i see that this is the rogers version (i896 while the at&t is the i897) and the forum only has it for the at&t version so im guessing they can use same root methods and use same roms correct? i see that a 2.3 update rolled out for it via kies but this one is still on 2.1 and i saw you can only root it on 2.1 and 2.2 so im staying here for now, i was guessing that superoneclick or gingerbreak could root this phone so ill try them both. one last question is there a better version of touchwiz ported to it? like galaxy s2-s3 look and feel? if now i was hopeing to get CM 10.1 on it, ccan somone point me in the right direction please?
Edit: i rooted it with z4root and was successful, i tried to get CWM on it but it seems that Rom manager dosent support andrid 2.1, and if i do get rom manager on here is there one for my i896? or do i just use the at&t cwm?

Yes, same device, different branding, better modem/radio. You can flash anything found here, and some from the Galaxy S i9000 section. As for rooting:
1. Grab a kernel for your current ROM version. I think the latest Rogers ROM is KH2, but you'll have to check on that. If you're not on it yet, grab this http://hotfile.com/dl/130585492/8ca639c/SGH-I896_RWC_I896UXKH2.rar.html (pass:sampro.pl), and flash it through Odin(I'm not sure if its included. If its not, google for it. Odin 1.83 or 1.85)
2. Flash it through Odin
3. Reboot into recovery, flash http://downloads.noshufou.netdna-cdn.com/superuser/Superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.zip
4. You now have root. Mod all you want, and proceed to flash yourself to JB 4.3, or any other version you want

If you're not on it yet, grab this http://hotfile.com/dl/130585492/8ca639c/SGH-I896_RWC_I896UXKH2.rar.html (pass:sampro.pl), and flash it through Odin(I'm not sure if its included. If its not, google for it. Odin 1.83 or 1.85)
2. Flash it through Odin
3. Reboot into recovery, flash http://downloads.noshufou.netdna-cdn.com/superuser/Superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.zip
4. You now have root. Mod all you want, and proceed to flash yourself to JB 4.3, or any other version you want

This method works for any and everything. Once you installed it, you can downgrade to Bootloader-less Froyo and Eclair ROM with no issue

I'll do this after school, and so I don't understand this fryo and eclair boot loader thing. Also can you show me the stable cm10.1/10.2 ROM please? I looked on cm and it was messed up for some reason
Careful with flashing ROMs with bootloaders!
Bad flash may brick your phone with no DIY solution.
- Update to 2.3.3 via Kies (install correct Samsung drivers first, follow the instructions)
- Reboot to make sure all is OK
- Go to Download mode, Flash Corn kernel to get CWM (find it in attached guide, read carefully and install correct drivers)
- Reboot to make sure all is OK
- Download CM10.1.2 Stable + Gapps, copy to your Internal storage (not SD card)
- In Recovery, do Factory Reset, Clear cache, Clear Dalvik
- Flash CM10.1.2. stable + Gapps (follow the instructions in the guide, no root needed to flash custom ROM)
- Enjoy rooted Android 4.2.2

Best use Windows 7 computer, Apple users report issues.

thanks for this! going to update it to gingerbread when I get home, I see that I have to flash a kernel in order to get root and CWM, this would have to be my first time so I hope I don't screw up xD I still don't quite know what kernels are even though I have been rooting/flashing for a long time. I have Hard bricked soooo many of my Samsung devices, like 2 or 3 and I wanted to cry when I bought my GS2 xD.
The good news is that Captivate is hard to brick. The only critical part is bootloaders update. Leave this task to Kies, millions of phones got updated this way (including mine). Yes, there are reports for bricked Captivate after Kies, but hope everything will go smoothly. Just follow Samsung's update instructions. Google what Kies version is recommended for Captivate update (i don't remember, sorry). To update to latest stable CyanogenMod read the guide and follow the instructions closely. You'll find inside the links to one-click Corn kernel update. Careful with Heimdall drivers, they are for a specific USB port (it is explained in the guide). Again, no root is needed for upgrade process, only CWM. CyanogenMod comes rooted. Good luck!

It's a hardware modification. No use to do it now on a 3y old phone. Just update your phone to a stable Android 4.2.2 build and go light on apps and data. Don't expect much from a single core CPU and limited RAM phone. Nobody ever expected that Captivate Android development will go so far. Use what you got and upgrade the phone when you need more muscle.

CM10.1.2 Android 4.2.2. is the latest Stable release. Don't get confused with CM10.2 Android 4.3 Beta.

Yay it worked thank you so much I'm enjoying every bit of it, one last question though xD I noticed this even without it being rooted and its doing it now, the WiFi signal on the status bar is always on the bottom two signals, this doesn't happen with my tablets, I don't see it taking a bit for stuff to load.

Different levels for each indication bar, probably. Is the WIFI working correctly? If yes, then nothing to fix here.
