[Q] LA4 CF Kernel & CWM Manager Stock ROM Improvements - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I just got my Gnote a few days ago, rooted it using Zergrush exploit, installed a stock LA4 CF Kernel & Rom.
I wanted to know if I want to stay mostly stock, while keeping the CF Kernel/CWM Manager, but also improve the speed (scrolling/homescreen/animations etc) of my device, what would be the best way of doing that?
I guess the major issue is that I like the idea of keeping CWM manager because it seems so easy to flash newer stock roms (without triangle & increased flash counter.) But a lot of custom roms change out the kernel too, which means that I will lose CWM capabilities, right? Is there a simple mod that I can flash on top of this stock ROM to keep everything as is, but with the speed benefits of a custom ROM?

Flash abyss note 3.3, It will come with the current version of CWM, and it will allow you to speed up your phone by overclocking it. You can also download spare parts app on the phone which has a setting to speed up window transitions and animations. I too enjoy the stock configuration but also wanted things a little faster without all the tweaks that custom roms have. So I use mobile odin to flash my stock firmwares because it gives you an option to flash them with root, cwm, and odin. Once its flashed the version of CWM will be old and not allow you to access CWM, so you will need t ouse odin to flash abyss note 3.3. This will give you stock firmware with just custom kernal to overclock and ise current cwm.

From Stock Froyo to a RomKitchen Gingerbread ROM

Hi, So I have a Australian Galaxy S i9000 with stock 2.2 DTJP5.
I have finally decided to try a RomKitchen Gingerbread ROM, but I am not sure exactly what the entire process is.
Do I:
-Root the phone
-Install ClockworkMod
-Flash Gingerbread Bootloaders with Odin
-Install the produced RomKitchen ROM with clockworkmod.
or perhaps:
-Flash a Gingerbread stock ROM with bootloaders using Odin
-Root the phone
-Install ClockworkMod
-Install the produced RomKitchen ROM with clockworkmod.
I cant find instructions that go into enough detail for the current Base ROM's on the RomKitchen Generator though, like,
-Which Base ROM should I choose- JV5, JV9 or JVO?
-Exactly what bootloaders and where from, do I get to flash first?
Also, is it easy to get back to my current stock, so I can update when Gingerbread is released officially?
Hoping someone has had some success and can help me out, Thanks!
Ok, now you have Froyo and you want to have GB.
So you'll need GB bootloaders. I would do it like this:
- wipe/format your internal sd
- Put the Kitchen-ROM on your internal sd
- Flash the Gingerbread-bootloader: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1089989
- Go into recovery and flash the Kitchen-ROM
I've used the bootloader to install CM7, works very fine and downloading only the bootloader goes much faster than a ~200MB complete firmware from samfirmware.com or out of the XDA-forum here.
go with installing the stock gingerbread rom first..it is always safe. better safe than sorry
what i usually do...its a lengthy one...flash stock gingerbread, select a kernel with CWM, place the ROM in SD or EX-SD and install thru update.zip option.
which base are you looking for? JVO has got many themes now. and so does JVP.
its always a good option to check whether you have 3e recovery enabled!
Thanks!
What I ended up doing:
1) Flashed a Gingerbread stock ROM with bootloaders (JVP from samfirmware.com) using Odin
2) Flashed this kernel [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044519] with Odin
3) Used ClockworkMod to install the RomKitchen ROM
4) Did ext4 conversion, root, etc from ClockworkMod
5) Also managed to get a custom boot animation working
Good, and if everything went fine, you won't have any problems.
Is it OK to flash a new non-wipe RomKitchen ROM with a different kernel to the current kernel?

yes definitely, but remember to disable any lagfix if the new kernel does not support lagfix

[Q] Vodoo-Froyo Kernel+ROM to GB Kernel+ROM?

Hello professionals!
I am currently on a vodoo kernel, the bootmenu shows it has ClockWork Recovery 2.5.1. and vodoo lagfix.
Ontop of that I use the stock Samsung ROM with Vodoo Sound.
Root is enabled.
Now I want to upgrade to Gingerbread.
The problem: I don't quite remeber what I did half a year ago and what was important. I followed some guide on here.
Do I have to revert anything?
And how would I go flashing GB? Just use the update.zip on the SD to flash a new Kernel out of recovery mode through CWM and then flash the ROM the same way?
I'd recommend reverting ext4 to rfs filesystem, then flash a complete stock GB firmware /with/ GB bootloaders, after that you can grab any rom/kernel you want if you don't like stock.
GB and froyo bootloaders are different, so if you just try to flash a new gb rom with CWM directly you'd probably softbrick the phone or something
i think the best way is flash newest gingbread rom( JVS 2.3.5) with odin, in odin you need to tick "repartition" and "update bootloader" ! <=this is very important if you used lagfix and froyo rom.
wouldn't a stock GB firmware/bootloader kind of crash with most kernels/roms out there?
Just to be sure, the order is:
-firmware
-then bootloader
-then kernel
-then rom
??
All that after reverting the lagfix and all that via ODIN?

Question about EXACTLY process to flash roms

First of all, HI guys and sorry for my irregular english.
I read since a long time XDA Forums to prepare me in flash and root methods for my galaxy note.
At now, i'm using this stock rom:
[ICS][4.0.3][Stock][OpenGermany]N7000XXLPY_N7000OXALPY_N7000XXLPT_HOME.tar.md5
+
CF-Root-SGN_XX_OXA_LPY-v5.6-CWM5.tar + SuperSU
but i came from a stock rom: N7000UBKK2 with default kernel KK1 from Samsung and Movistar. and i have only a nandroid backup of my default Samsung/Movistar rom.
I have another gingerbread samsung stock rom, for emergency cases:
N7000UBKK8_N7000WEKK1_N7000PETKK1_HOME.tar.md5
But my point is:
I wish test some roms, before to decide which one use in dual boot system:
- Stock 4.0.4 (LRG or you suggest me LRK or another more recent ?)
- AOKP
- Criskelo
- Chrack
- Paranoid
- Cyanogen 9
And i have ready to use: Odin 1.87, Odin Mobile, SuperSU (if is necesary), Abyss 4.2 (CW/Red) for recovery, Abyss 4.2 CW for odin and CF-Root for LRG (if is necesary i can find one for LRK or another recent)
But i'm confused about how exactly do that. Yes i know there are many... MANY topics about that but, I only need a bit of help guys to understand the exactly process and avoid EMMC BUG...
If i understant correctly, i must follow this method, please correct me if i'm grong:
01 - Check if i'm root and settings are in depuration + unkown sources
02 - Because i'm using an ICS Kernel i need first downgrade to Abyss for continue
03 - Reboot in Recovery and flash Abyss4.2 CW/Red, after "reboot recovery" and make wipes
Which one should i use for this CW or Red Version?
...
But after this i have problems, because i have ever red: before flash a custom rom you need a same base. Then ok i think for use for example CM9, or Paranoid, or Criskelo, I need a 4.0.4 rom then i have a:
[ICS][4.0.4][Stock][OpenGermany]N7000XXLRG_N7000DBTLRG_N7000XXLRB_HOME.tar.md5
Ready to flash but...
If a this moment following the previous steps, i'm in recovery of Abyss CW/Red:
Should i reboot using this Abyss kernel in download mode to flash a stock LRG ?
...
Or in another reality, is not needed flash Abyss to flash a stock rom using Odin ?
I wish first test the Stock 4.0.4 before any other custom to make a base point of comparison
...
And after, using 4.0.4 LRG + CF-Root, is safe use install from zip file in recovery to flash any other rom like CM9 for example ? or i need use abyss recovery (before flash it using CR-Root recovery) to flash any other rom (ICS) ?
Again i hope you can help me with these questions, and really sorry is the text is so long but i prefeer to know rightly how to procced before brick my phone, because i still waiting for a JIG (you know, for emergency...)
Tnks to all.
First of All You need to know that there is no need for the same base to flash the ROM.
Second thing You have to use Abyss Redpill 4.2 Original Logo Recovery(It uses GB Kernel) If you are not going to downgrade to GB and want to flash on top of your current ROM
Third Whenever you want to flash CM9/AOKP/AOSP first downgrade to GB(Pre rooted Rom) OR GB then Root it and then flash the rom by going it to CWM recovery.
Fourth thing is Never flash Abyss using PC Odin.
Proper Way to Flash CM9/AOSP/AOKP for a clean install (You will lose data)
Download a prerooted GB Rom from here ===> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
Reboot your phone is Download Mode. (Vol Down+Home+Power)
Open Pc Odin on your Pc/Laptop
Connect your phone to PC via USB Cable
A Small Box in Left Upper turns Yellow. It means your phone is recognized by Odin
Now Select GB File under PDA Tab (Do not change any settings)
Start Flash
YOU WILL HAVE A GB ROM ON YOUR PHONE WITH ROOT
Now Go to Recovery
Install Zip from SD Card
Flash Rom
Flash Gapps
Do All 3 Wipes (Cache/Dalvik/Data)
Reboot System.
you might wanna root first and backup efs before jumping to any rom that is different csc then you previous one.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
Tnks to all, at now i'm testing some roms and kernels, looking for a "perfect" mate for my paranoid android (tableted rom), and in my tests i still looking for a decent kernel because (may this is my imagination but...) CF-Root LRG kernel in LRK Rom (Chrack's Rom) consume excessively batery but i will test in an ordinary day because may is not problem from rom, this should be a problem from kernel...
I read before: SpeedMod kernel was developed just for this situation: low batery comsumption + high perfomance...

Installing custom ROM

Its been sometime since I have bought the note. I was wary of installing custom ROM's due to the various hardbrick issues. I have installed custom ROM's on other android devices (Galaxy S, Dell Venue) hence do have some basic knowledge. I am on stock rooted Indian ICS ROM :silly:
Two questions before I start:
1. I am sitting on a potential dangerous ROM, and I know it. Has there been any light on EMMC hardbrick bug by Samsung, (I have not tried any OTA updates in fear of bricking the phone). I am on Android version 4.0.3 (baseband version N7000DDLP4).
2. Is the CWM hardbrick bug sorted?
So I intended to follow the steps mentioned below:
1. Flash stock GB ROM through ODIN.
2. Root and install CWM (Is CWM the only method of installing custom ROM's)
3. Install the custom ROM (I was looking at Liquid Black ROM based on CM9)
sounds ok
use pc odin to flash GB tar file
CWM is the only way to install/flash zip files of custom roms that are available here.

1. No rom is dangerous, it is just the Kernel, change stock kernel with some safe kernel and you will be okay.
2. Yes, use safe kernel like Speedmod or Notecore, they have safe cwm too.
Maximum of custom roms can be installed using cwm recovery only, but look for Alliance rom, it can be flashed with odin too.

Wouldnt the custom ROM packages include the kernel too? If I am installing from stock GB ROM, are you infering the kernel will be what Samsung released when it came out with the GB update?

It does, that's why I said flash safe custom kernel and you will be good on stock rom too!, so basically its just the kernel which is faulty and no issue with rom as long as you use with safe kernel. You can also flash stock firmware using mobile odin and can inject custom kernel at same time.

Yep you are good to go as GB kernels are safe. You can also
1.If you are on stock ICS : Root it and install abyss kernel (Its a GB kernel so your phone wont boot).
2.Reboot recovery & Wipe data
3.Install your CM9 ROM.
Best of luck

Well referring to my given procedure (If you follow it) after flashing Liquid Smooth you will have its kernel (CM9 kernels are safe for wiping) as far as in case you consider flashing TW custom ROMS just make sure it has a safe kernel (Speedmod or notecore) before wiping.
Thanks, the inputs are appreciated.
A final question, I read that stock ICS rooted through CWM.zip is unsafe. Unfortunately I had rooted my stock ICS installation the same way, phone is working fine till now. Anything I should be wary of before proceeding (yeah am nervous about bricking the device).
I am planning to install a pre-rooted GB ROM as mentioned here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20963718&postcount=2
I am planning to download the N7000XXKKA ------ 2.3.6 2011 November------- N7000CPWKK3 -----------United Kingdom (Carphone Warehouse)----- Download version, and flash it as posted by Dr Ketan.
I will follow the method to root here:

basic Kernel question

I am extracting this specific question from my other thread at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1855867&referrerid=1918103
1. how can I tell exactly what kernel I am running? does any part of the code "-N7000XXKK9-CL725676 [email protected]#2"
translate into one of the kernel names that is being tossed about here? (speedmod, abyss et al)
2. and wanting to follow flashing instructions (from 2.36 to stock current ics) to a "t", can I flash any recommended kernel over the one I currently have (see above, which is also no longer stock since I already flashed that but forgot its moniker, btw rooted phone) or is there a one-way caveat?
voila, dumb questions I suppose but at least I hope they're precise;
thx

Go to phone setting, about phone, and then you will see kernel version, the last three letters is the kernel your device is running. For example if it is ics kernel lq3 then it is compatible with cf root 5.6 lq3, if you want to root your phone with CWM recovery. For ics you can use custom kernel regardless what version of kernel it is, meaning it is compatible to any kernel version if it is a custom kernel, by flasing a custom kernel using the pc odin you will root your phone and get CWM recovery also at the same time safe from so called ICS SUPER BRICK BUG.

could you address my question if the kernel KK9 (shich appears on my settings readout) translates to any of the known kernels ie abyss, speedmod or other?
can I keep this very kernel (N7000XXKK9-CL725676 [email protected]#2) and flash a custom ICS via CVM recovery?

KK9 is a gb rom and has a stock gb kernel. Abyss is a gb custom kernel. Speedmod is a custom kernel also. To get a custom kernel must flash first in pc odin.
To root and get CWM recovery read this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
Yes you can flash custom ics rom over it using the CWM recovery, pls read the op in the custom rom for the procedure before flashing any custom rom. By flashing a custom ics rom you will get ics kernel, you will not retain the kk9 which is a gb kernel.
