It's a partition on your device that the system use when the RAM is full.
so if its grater in size.... that means its good... right??
and if so.. then y do devs prefer to keep it as 0mb??

Its because there is no need for swap and it can reduce the life of your sd card, according to most ppl

But remember, swap partition will never be fast like device ram chip.
And if u want to achieve good performance witch swap partition, buy microsd card class 6 (not 4)

ok... how do i check the class of by card?? coz here in India they dont provide class info along eith the card... also there is nothing written on it.... my card gives me a decent transfer rate of 4-5 mbps while copying to the card...

Either u have been fooled, or its a problem with ur Pc(coz my class2 card gives me 4MBPS),
or the number of files is too large
Example :- 1 file of 100MB will copy faster than 100 files of 1MB each...

Yes, faster SD cards do help quite a bit. I used a class 4 for a while and it was noticeably improved for apps2sd on eclair. I got a class 10 for Christmas and the improvement over class 4 was definitely noticeable but not as dramatic. I've read that there isn't much of an improvement between class 6 and class 10 due to hardware limitations inside the phone. For HD video recording I've seen recommendations for class 6+.
Khalpower's optimization script is amazing for eclair. I recommend the JIT, optimized build.prop, overclock and apps2sd. There is also a newer JIT, but I'm not sure if khal incorporated it into his script yet. I think we're still struggling to get the froyo builds to measure up to the optimized eclairs.
Not sure though, I find my XT720 is more compatible with class2 SD cards. I've got one 4GB Class2 Card, one 8GB class2 Card and one 8GB Class6 card which all made by SansDisk. all of these, the most compatible one is the 4GB class2 Card. Although the Class6 card is faster and perform better, there's an issue with stability, where the phone frequently cannot mount the card when the phone is booted.

there are class 10 micro SD but the prices are outrageous at the moment.
class 6 16GB is the best bang for the buck right now
the 32GB are still stuck on class 4
looking forward to get some 32GB class 6 when they come out

32GB microSD are also still pretty expensive (above $100).
Been using the Class 6 for a day now and I can feel speed improvements in loading apps or data from the sd card. I also cleared the factory settings to start fresh.
I've got a class 10 16 GB microSD card for 30 € in Germany, which is about 40 $. I think that's a fair price. I haven't used it yet, so I can't tell you if it is faster or not.

I'm always hessitant to buy something with that odd of a price/speed ratio. I was actually reading the reviews and found something VERY interesting. There was one person who was mentioning an app called SD Speed Boost that was described as being able to adjust the sd card cache, thus speeding up the read/write speed to the card. It was only a dollar, so I tried it.

I was skeptical at first, but I realized that if I run SD Tools from the market to test the speed before and after, it shows a significant increase in read/write speed. Obviously, those of us who have apps and cache on our sd card are constantly hitting it and the card's performance will affect performance.
Does anyone else want to tackle this $1 app and confirm my findings? If this is the answer to our slowness problems, maybe the settings that this app changes can somehow be added to our ROMs for everyone to benefit!

Is this the app your'e referring to? My write speed stayed about the same @10.7MB/s but the read speed went from @16 to 23 with a 1MB cache. I don't have any apps on the sd card to verify that aspect of any performance boost but Media Gallery loaded pretty quick.

Yes, this is the app i'm using. I've been "field testing" this all day, and I must say that I have never had this type of responsiveness and speed from this phone EVER. I am loving this $1 addition to my phone. I have a class 4 card that seems to be giving me 6mb write/33mb read and that is substantially better. I've tinkered with the different settings and found arount 3000 giving me the best numbers with my specific card. I can only imagine that a different class card would need different settings.

I think the app is just changing the value in /sys/devices/virtual/bdi/179:0/read_ahead_kb
The default value seems to be 128. You can set the value using e.g.

I have a 16GB Kingston "class 10" (see also complaints about this card throughout XDA--I got it as a gift and I believe it was on sale for $40 at the time).
I've been testing read and write speeds with "SD tools" (free). SD tools writes and reads 190 MB and displays a dial as it goes so I can see that the initial write speed starts pretty high (10 MB/s) and then quickly falls significantly within a few seconds (probably after an on SD card buffer gets filled) eventually stabilizing at 3.3 MB/s. So, clearly this card is not really class 10 at all as it cannot sustain 10 MB/s except for what seems to be a 1 sec burst. As far as read and read_ahead_kb goes:
128 -- 14.1 MB/s read (avg of 3)
1024 -- 22.4 MB/s read (avg of 3)
2048 -- 43.2 MB/s read (avg of 3)
4096 -- 38.2 MB/s read (avg of 3)
Optimal also seems to be 2MB for me.

I was hoping that someone would figure out a way to just add this as a default into our ROMs. It was worth a dollar to get this conversation started.
i upgraded to a new SD card and run antutu to see how fast it is but to my surprise this new class 10 card is not faster than my old class 2 card.
so is there like a hardware limit or why could that be?
both cards have about

15mb/s read.

For example, my Sandisk class 2 is faster than a Kingston class 4.

its a kingston class 10 vs sandisk class 2.
with a class 4 vs 2 i could underatand it but this is supposed to be a class 10 which should have about 10mb/s write speed according to wikipedia. that would almost be double the speed that i get...

I have a Samsung Plus 16GB Class 10 and get:
According to SD Tools: 12.4MB/s write and 17.2 MB/s read.
According to AnTuTu: 11.3 MB/s write and 14.7 MB/s read.
16GB Sandisk Class 10 (Antutu 2.3.1, 2nd run.)
10.4 MB/s Read
10.0 MB/s Write
The card has 12.4 GB on it of real data before testing.
This is on GR3, which I don't think has any "SD-Card optimization". (Too lazy to check.)
Keep in mind that we don't know, at least I don't, how Antutu tests. If it's testing with a lot of independent reads/writes, the speed will invariably go down. (If copying a single large file from my computer, I get a much higher throughput.)
"Class 10" should only mean that your card is able to sustain 10MB/s of continuous writes, it doesn't say anything about access times/block erase speed (which can influence any benchmark.)
Hi TrymHansen, there is a free app called SD Tools which does nothing but test SD card speeds.

The class rating of a card indicates the minimum speed the card will write at. Class 10 = 10 MB/s write speed. Read speeds are usually higher than write speeds.

My post wasn't only for you. The first part about SD Tools pertains to you. And anyway your post is incorrect, the Class rating indicates the MINIMUM speed the card will write at. Which isn't the same as a sustained speed.

Hi grognaz, from your stated speeds it would seem you have a class 6 SD card. My card has no brand on it but it reads and writes at the speeds stated by the eBay seller.

I can confirm the quality of Kingston SD cards. My 16GB "Class 10" gets the following in SD Tools:
Writing Speed: 7.2MM/s
Reading Speed 13.5MB/s
It's good enough for me as I was considering just getting a Class 6 as I don't exactly do much HD video recording, but if you need the speed - avoid this card!
I am using Sandisk 32gb class 4 card.

SD card read: 8.9 MB/s
Your SD Cache size matters when u perform SD Speed test in your phone. If you are using CM7 ROM, the default is a mere 128kb cache.
Cache size of SD can be from 128kb to 4096kb and different sd cards will perform better/worst with different cache sizes.
Just thought it would be a good info to share.

This is sort of true, but if it was a mere cache it would always be a good idea to set it as large as you can afford RAM-wize. This is not the case.
It is a read-ahead cache. In short that means that whenever a read is requested, it first checks the cache to see if the data is already there, if not it reads the amount of bytes specified no matter what.
Increasing the read-ahead cache will help when reading large files, since it leads to fewer (actual) io-commands being executed.
However, if you're reading a lot of small files it will hurt performance, since for every read issued it will read a lot of unnecessary data before it can go on to the next request.
(I also think this is at a block-level, which means that it merely reads the next blocks, not knowing if they actually belong to the file you're reading at the moment, but not sure about that.)

If use 8G↓ , then set cluster to 32K.
If use 16G↑, then set cluster to 64K.
Test it!
Apparently these new 64gb SDXC cards work in some, if not many SDHC devices that do not officially support SDXC. I'd love to put my whole mp3 collection (40gb) and still have room for a handful of movies.
Probably going to get one for my Bionic, but if I know it'll work on the Nook as well I'd get two right off the bat.

It only documents compatability with up to 32 GB... but that does not mean it is not capable of using the 64... this has been common in "computer" technology... they will advertise compatability with the largest drive available at the time.. but along comes something bigger... sometimes it works... sometimes it don't.
Bottom line is... we won't know if the nook color can use the 64 GB sdxc until someone tries.
To the OP.... if I were you I'd try it in the nook first... if it works then you can get another (and let us know either way)... either way you can reformat it to work in your Bionic anyway.
Doesn't it depend on the number of address lines that the uProcessor has (or at least has enabled/available)? A look at the device specifications may actually tell for certain how much memory can be addressed by the NC.

The SD card is a block device, which means it's not directly addressable. It's not a matter of the number of address lines on the uProcessor. It's a matter of if the software driver can issue the correct commands to get to all the data since the bus interface hasn't changed. See here

As I said, it seems many phones that do not "support" SDXC still will mount and use the full capacity of these new 64gb cards if you format them on the phone.
So there is a good chance they will work, but not for sure, especially on a low end hardware spec like the Nook Color. But it seems even the original Nexus and early Motorola Droid phones will use them, so the Nook might too.

Anyway, couldn't quite get myself to spend $220, so I got the Kingmax for $178. Hopefully it'll work as well as the Sandisk. I'll report back once I get it.
Sorry for resurrecting but do we have any updates on this? I've been seeing some pretty good deals on 64GB microSDXC lately and it would be great if they can be used on the Nook Color.
Someone is going to just have to bite the bullet and try it out. Until then all we can do is speculate really.

I bought two Sandisk 64GB microSDXC cards a while ago and can confirm that they work for me. The card has to be reformatted with FAT32 but works flawless afterwards. I've formatted the cards in the devices.
I've used it with a Nook Color, Nook Tablet, Motorola Defy+, Huawei Ideos X3, and even in a Samsung Galaxy i7500. I've used it both with the stock rom as well as with cyanogenmod. Currently I'm using one of the cards to boot cyanogenmod 7.2RC1 from SD on my Nook Color.
My main use is in my Nook Color and Motoraly Defy+. I've experienced no problems so far.
Formating the card in the device takes a while and it looks like nothing is happening. You just have to wait. Once it's finished it mounts the card and you get a notificiation.
What class are they? Do you know the Sandisk part no.?
My cards are class 6 cards, the item# is SDSQY-064G-U46A. I don't know if the item numbers or cards vary in different countries. I bought mine in Germany.
There seems to be a newer version of the card with class 10. I haven't tested it since I currently don't need any more 64 cards but I wouldn't worry about compatibility.

You can download an app from the playstore called "SD booster" to help the read/write speeds if you experience lag on the larger 64 GB microSD card. It helps me out. There is links on google too where it has been bench-tested.

I used these tools to find the right cache size for my 64 GB card and have it performing as good as a stock 16 GB card with no modifications.
I did the benchmark with both cards. The first card was tested with my old notebooks internal card reader:

Hi all, I have a couple of questions before I get my new sd-card.
1. I got my eyes on the SanDisk Ultra UHS-1 8gb class 10 sdcard with a write speed of 30mb/s(advertised). I was just wondering if there would be a noticeable speed difference (i.e. App loading time) if I partitioned that sdcard, as compared to my current class 4 Kingston sdcard.
2. Also, I've read from many forums that some devices don't see noticeable increase in speed from class 6 onwards... Is that true for our device too? (SGM)
3. Is ext4 partition better or ext3 partition better?

1. Well u surely won't get the advertised mb/s, but it will be a reasonably fast speed, as speed depends on your cable too (for trasnfer). I'm not sure, but yes u will notice that apps load faster (im basing this on what michie said in the swapping section of the performance thread, so its probably the same for loading from external partition)
2. Yes probably little difference between a class 6, 8 and 10. Maybe because most devices can't read beyond a certain speed or even if they do, that threshold speed is enough and lies in the range of class 6 upwards.
3. I don't really know, but i would suggest ext 4 as i see it recommended in many app to sd apps. Someone could clarify this.

Alright, I don't really care about what michie said (no offence), i just want to know if it really works as michie said (personal experiences). I don't wanna buy a new sdcard, just to realise there's not much difference...

I don't guarantee anything though Just hope it does the trick!
Try Sd tools free on playstore to test your sd speed write/read before partition
(I try Speed Write true normal like sd class : 10Mb/s (class 10)
and test again after partition.
(I Test it & The Result Sd speed write reduce to 8Mb/s after partition but sd read Increase, test on my sd class 10)
If you want to boost more speed you can try free app called sd booster on playstore.
Good app to gain more speed.

So buying a class10 sdcard does help increase the apploading speed in a2sd?

but Read Speed Increase from 23Mb/s to 28Mb/s
if I use sd booster and set it on 6Mb. my sd write reduce to 6.8 mb but Read speed increase to 32,1 Mb/s
and I got more speed read to gain more smooth performance to play game and more.
also speed up booting on your phone.
but decrease performace make a file like recording and take a photo.
but speed app is awesome.

You didn't get my point. I'm talking about app-reading speeds in app2sd in an ext4 partition. As in app-loading time. Would it decrease?
Yes off course Increase If you boost your memory... more speed you have but low write.
I'm use ext4 partition too as my Internal memory with Internal HACK memory and OC.
Take a look.
Iam using sd class 10 transcend 16GB.
and use ext partition as default memory and now all of my app in ext4.
app speed & booting is great after I use sd class 10 then my old sd card sandisk 4GB class 4.
