[GUIDE] : Flashing a baseband and why you should do it - Xperia Arc Android Development

Hello All.
I had a small talk with DoomLord about flashing base-bands over the phone and the difference it would make for your phone so have decided to make the information that I got available for the public here so that no one else has to go to the same hassle I did Googling for all the stuff.
I am a power user of Android. But completely unbeknownst to the development side of the OS. So if I make any mistakes, I request you to point them out to me and I will make the necessary corrections.
So what exactly is a baseband ?!
Inside of your cellphone, there is a chip embedded that enables it to communicate with your carrier's transmission towers. This chip is known as a "baseband processor" and it is responsible for signal processing and realtime radio transmission operation. (Got that bit from WikiPedia)
The baseband is actually a piece of software that instructs that processor on what frequencies to operate on.
Kind of like a driver for any hardware that you might install on your computer.
So any gain in the level of harmony between the hardware and software that make data transmission happen on your phone (GSM/DATA) is only going to benefit the phone's performance. ( READ battery life, signal reception, etc.)
Also, each baseband has it's corresponding libraries which also need to be provided for it to be working optimally.
So that's that for the theory part.
I'm open to corrections. If anyone can point them out, I will be happy to edit the post. But I had a lot of trouble trying to understand WHY I should flash a particular baseband and what difference it will make.
Currently, at XDA we have baseband patches for baseband -36 and -64 available.
So as per your ROM requirements, it would be better to flash any of these base-bands onto your phone with their corresponding libraries.
Which brings us to the next part.
ACTUALLY flashing the baseband.
Pretty simple process actually.
But from what I know, you will need a rooted phone with an unlocked bootloader to do this. (!! Not sure !! )
And a custom recovery (Clockwork MOD) that can allow you flash .zip to NAND.
EDIT : You just "NEED" root. (Thanks Flo95)
Please follow post 2 for further info on how to do it without root.
My ARC S is rooted and has an unlocked bootloader.
So all that you need to do now is download the following :
1.Flashtool.
2.Baseband that you require.
3.Corresponsing baseband libraries
I will be posting more on this with screenshots so that everyone can enjoy the same benefits that I have currently after using my phone on -36 baseband and using the corresponding patches.
Credits to DoomLord (For awesome DOOM Kernel) and Iridaki (For baseband patches). If there is anyone else to credit, please do point and I will acknowledge the same here.
I invite inputs from other experienced XDA members to provide more technical Know-how on why this is necessary. Sadly, there is insufficient material right now on this topic here.
Thanks.
EDIT :
Lets share a list of working Basebands in various areas :
For eg. :
Gujarat, India : 36 works fine on Vodafone 3G
64 works fine on Vodafone 3G and Airtel.
NSW Australia (on the Optus network) : Baseband 36 tested to be working great
Finland:
-64 works great for Sonera / Saunalahti / Elisa / DNA
-36 drops connection alot for Saunalahti / Elisa
Croatia
baseband 56 works great in Croatia
You can point to the baseband working for you and your location and I will update the post accordingly.
Thanks
Please click the "THANKS" button if you feel you've benefited from the info !

You can flash basebands without an unlocked bootloader, as it happens when "normal" users update their devices the official way without need of an unlocked bl.
You can get recovery with SE Extreme Tweaker on locked bootloader, too.
Only thing you need is root.
But for kernel awesomeness I'd definitly recommend to unlock the device.

Thanks for this topic!! ok I attach here the post I published in the other thread with no answer :
" @Iridaki: Sorry for my stupid question... But is there a way to flash another baseband directly from recovery?? Or I don't know, with root explorer... I'm on firmware. 42 rooted, with locked bootloader and with recovery. Thanks!

I think this is a great idea to discuss what basebands work best in what areas, it will certainly help a lot of people make the right (and informed decision).
To start off, I am in NSW Australia (on the Optus network) and I have found that the ideal baseband for me is .36 - All the other ones work fine of course but the .36 offers best/optimum battery and radio output for everyday use (with the latest DooMKernel of course!)

Hi, Im from the Philippines and wondering what baseband suits for my Arc S?

Yes there is a way to flash the baseband without Flashtool, but we wont publish it for now, since it's not working reliable on me. For theorie its working like an SE fota update. Which uses binary diff and flashes the diffs to the corresponding areas. This way you could flash all partitions. But this is only theory for now, because with flashtool we have a better way which is very very safe. Even if flashtool fails the phone can be restored everytime. Via FOTA you can really brick it forever
@All asking for which baseband fits best:
Please please DON'T start flashing basebands without thinking about now.
Normally ALWAYS use the baseband which comes with the ROM! For example SE always has the corresponding baseband included. This baseband fits the android libs it comes with.
On custom Roms please read what the developer of the customRom telly you. If he/she has developed the Rom for specific baseband libs.
All other things like baseband patches are tested and developed by other developers which know what they are doing. So if you use such a patch ALWAYS read the manual and the requirements. Because it CAN happen that it is NOT possible to use a GB baseband on a ICS rom and vice versa. The is a little more than "just" libs and firmware. Also the java part framework/base/com/java/internal/telephony....
has to fit the baseband (SE is very special here).
So i hope now you all understand. Please please please leave the decision which baseband is best and which is working to the devs who know what they are doing!!!!!! Don't come here and tell "i tried baeband xxxxx now my phone randomly disconnects data/voice/..."
Thanks

I'm in Victoria, Australia on the Telstra network. Does anyone know which is the optimal baseband for me to use?
Cheers.

[Q] E15 Modem/AMSS UMTS Bands

First of all I want to salute everyone in the XDA comunity, impresive people.
Well, my question is on the Xperia X8 modem, so it can be modified to work on any UMTS (WCDMA), I far as I know it is possible, some other devices that uses the same SoC can do it even in a service menu [Samsung]. So, why not Xperia X8?
I'm an Engineer, and I have few experience on embedded devices, but there's few information on the Qualcomm MSM7227 so it's hard to tell; it is known that the amss.sin is the microkernel running the radio on the device, wich is in charge of the GSM, GPRS... UMTS, on a ARM9. I did flash the amss file from a E15a on my device, and though the service menu (on 2.1 Stock) I've found that the working bands were the same as the E15a and not E15i (My phone is a E15i I'm in Colombia Carrier uses 1900Mhz) BUT there was not response in WCDMA mode Only. I hope E15a and E15i are the same in harware. Maybe it is also possible that SEUS can flash the firmwares for the device we need/want but I'm not acquainted withs SEUS. So maybe it is needed to change something else, it is possible to have access to all the memory map, everything is men made, can be hacked/mod.
So, hopefully there is chance to do this.
[I did search on XDA for the Xperia X8 related topics, but did not found specific information, that's why I started this thread.]
Thak you people.

The E15a / E15i Xperia X8 is exactly the same hardware (same goes for the E16's (W8) ... they are of the same hardware but ship with a slightly different ROM (known as "Walkman")).
You can actually turn a E15i into a E15a by simply flashing the E15a baseband (and the other way around). Inside the baseband are the required files who configure the GSM/UMTS radio for the correct frequencies used to communicate with the mobile network (read: the towers).
So far no one actually ever tried to patch-up a "generic" baseband which would work on all supported mobile networks ... if you feel fancy enough you can try.
Thank you for your answer, I did flash the E15a Baseband so I did get the "Working Bands" on the Service Menu UMTS_BC1, UMTS_BC2, UMTS_BC5 (E15a) (Stock Kernel) but, still nothing on the actual signal, nothing working with WCDMA only, and the phone still says "Model E15i" on the device information. I was looking at my build.prop file, and there is something about Model and hsxpa:
[I'm using now nAa Kernel 10, but can not find a way to see if I still have the correct E15a modem firmware]
ro.product.model=E15i
ro.product.name=E15i
something about LT15i
ro.ril.hsxpa=2
ro.ril.gprsclass=10
ro.ril.hsupa.category=5
It is good news to hear that all of them are the same, in hardware, so we all still have the chance to use the bands we need.
I hope someone could figure out how to make this work, I'm not an expert on Android, but still curious.
Thanks again.
I only know that switching the baseband and getting a GSM/2G/3G signal works at least with the Stock 2.1 ROMs. I can't speak for custom Kernels and/or custom ROMs (since you at least flashed a custom Kernel).
Looking at the 3G settings you can select GSM, WCMA and WCDMA; so the three are supported in both basebands.
Anyhow ... flashing the custom Kernel should only replace the Kernel binary - it doesn't change anything else of the the baseband (Stock Kernel+Baseband FTF == ~26MB, custom Kernel FTF == ~7MB, naked Stock Kernel == ~7MB).
As for the hardware ... allow me to correct myself as I wasn't accurate ...
While the devices are all of the same hardware there are two minor differences (applies to W8/X8 i/a):
1. Depending on the region where you bought the phone you may either get a touchscreen with a Synaptics digitizer or a Cypress digitizer. That's just a suble difference.
2. Devices built at 11W29 and later have a revised chipset where the security holes the boot loader unlock uses are closed - trying to unlock the boot loader on the affected devices will cause a hard brick at a 99% probability (I only know of 3-4 post 11W29 devices that still worked after a boot loader unlock).
That's about it ...
I think your best bet would be to try and talk with nobodyAtall by PM or to conduct your test by using the Stock baseband/Kernel to work out that you get a signal/connection.

Which Baseband Works Best For You?

I think the Baseband is much important in a Rom. I tried Lots of Baseband for me the best XXKPK. Someone telling XXKPG and the other one XXKPM etc. For example my phone connect with 11 Mpbs with KPM , 36 Mpbs with KPK in my garden same position.
Is there any app or something to try and get real results?
This should not be something relatively or the Baseband is not personel for me good and for other bad.
Lets make something with this Subject together.
Regards.
battery drain is also very dependent on baseband. so do you want the one with best battery drain, best reception or best balance?
the baseband of the latest firmware which is via kies available in you region should be the best
for me the lastest XXKPM it has not changed to a lot in the several signals, the only obvious change is the 2G that now it goes very faster also in the switch

I can confirm that, esp. for 2G
also battery drain is bit better now (before stock and KPK)
and call quality is better and that is what I like most of the new baseband. Less noise.

My matter is, There is no firmware for Turkey. Im searching for 3 days but couldnt find anything.

Mate, if you go onto the android dev forum for this handset you can get a full write up on how to root, backup your efs/nv data, and then how to flash a new rom (eg pandoriam, ripper, rxtreme, wanam etc) if you can't find something then search the forum for the answer. It should all be thsre , good luck!!

Yes the "T" in the name is just the Telstra branding, if you follow ausdims rooting thread you will be fine

The 'T' in the model number isn't branding. The phone is actually slightly different.
I have a friend who works for Telecom here in NZ and they also sell the I9305T.
He said it is optimised for use on Telecom's network (and obviously Telstra's too) it uses different modems and the antenna is different inside the phone.
They do however use the same ROMs and firmware. Anything intended for the I9305 will also work the same on the I9305T, except modems.

Hello everyone!
New to this forum and new to Android phone. I have searched the whole forum and read through the dev-sections. Also did searches on multiple sites and through searchengines to find out what device model to use in the ToolKit...didn't find any confirming answer to my question.
As I have no posts from before, I couldn't write this in the dev-section, so I chose the thread that was closest to what I was looking for.
Question: What is the correct device model to choose in the ToolKit (I have version 7.0.0).
Information from my "about section"...
Phone: Samsung Galaxy SIII 4G
Model: GT-I9305
Android-version: 4.1.1
Build: JRO03C.I9305XXALK5
Operator: Telenor (Norway)
The options I lean towards since the only choice showing 4G, is number 21 (International 4G).
Problem is that it says it's GT-I9305N and not GT-I9305. It also says (Build JRO03C ALIA) and that does not match to my build either.
Then I look at the (International LTE), which says (GT-I9305)...which is ok.
And then number 14, which says (Build JRO03C ALK5), which is the same as mine...but it doesn't say 4G, which I have.
It might sound silly, but I really dont want to make the wrong choice here and end up having a phone that either "does not work at all"
or "does not work as it should". And before anyone says that I then should just leave it alone, my only intention at this point is to let
my anti-virus get root-access, so that the firewall works and the anti-theft works.
Hope anyone can be of help and thanks in advance.

Ok, so I rooted my device yesterday after reading through like 10 more threads...just took a chance, thought to myself "guts and glory" and went for it..went well =) I chose option 14 the build was the same as mine and it worked like a charm.
I am still left with a few quesitons though...might not be relevant to the thread anymore...
Does the rooting share the same build-match requirement as the flashing of a new operatingsystem?
How do I uninstall apps that were preinstalled on an operatorlocked phone?
Anders - Norway
I think you should look for app in app store, Root App delete or something like that. Then search for you operator apps/files and remove.

1. Bootloader is allready unlocked
2.For how to root look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2255190&highlight=how+to+root
3. Flash custom recovery, would advice this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxZf39vI0Lc. Download the .tar.md5 and flash with Odin in PDA.
4. Go to the CM thread and download the latest nightly and Gapps (Google apps) and place on the sdcard.
5. Go in recovery and wipe cache, dalvik cache, format system and data factory reset and then flash the CM rom and Gapps right after another without rebooting, reboot and you`re done.

[Q] Upgrading S4 Active I9295 to 4.4 Kitkat

First of all, hi.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 Active I9295 with android 4.2.2 and I've seen on internet that 4.4 is out, but not for all devices.
I didn't received any notification through wi-fi, i checked for updates even using kies but no result.
I just want to ask.. can I update using another 4.4 version ? (from nordic countries or germany or etc).. without carrier-locking my phone ?
Do you recommend me any official 4.4. rom that would be compatible with my phone ?
And, not at least, are there any improvements in battery on Kit Kat ? (that's the reason I want to update, my battery sucks).
Right now I have baseband I9295XXUBML3; VERSION NUMBER JDQ39.I9295XXUBML3, KERNEL VERSION [email protected] #1.
Please answer as soon as possible.

It is safe to flash any other i9295 firmware. When the firmware for your country is released you can just reflash.
I'm still not sure.. are there any reasons to take the risk ?
I've seen a lot of people complaining about wi-fi and having to flash modem separately.. and so on.
So, it is 100% safe ? and are there any improvements which deserve the risk ?i
Hi,
i got this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2764500
works like a charm, for me.
I'm still on 4.2.2 as well as there has been no official update for me yet. Yay for Eastern Europe.
From what I've heard 4.4 should handle the battery a little better and microSD cards a lot worse. Apparendly Android 5 (Lollipop?) will fix the SD card trouble, look a lot more like Ubuntu Touch (rumoured Q4 2013 :silly: ) and will only take a few months until it is out (rumoured Q4 2014). So you can flash twice or wait and flash once. It depends on how you use your phone, though I doubt S4A will be getting Android 5 as an official Samsung update.
The flashing guides are good enough to minimize the risk either way.
Official OTA came for this firmware.. Kies didn't find any update btw.
I'll come with an edit or something else after it finishes.
// So far so good.
Everything works like a charm, battery looks promising, can't tell until a full charge.
Love white battery indicator.
Not big modifications btw, i'd have loved if they put S5 UI...
i have a device with basically the exact kernel, baseband version and build number, but i have no OTA update, and kies don't find any update, any idea why ?
baseband > I9295XXUBML3
kernel > 3.4.0-2015525 [email protected]#1
build > JDQ39.I9295XXUBML3

It is safe to flash any other i9295 firmware. When the firmware for your country is released you can just reflash.

if i flash it with any other i9295 firmware, will my phone be carrier-locked or something?

No. The firmwares ate optimized for specific regions, but they do not lock you in to a carrier. The major difference between the different versions will be the modems and the APN settings, so you may find that you get better signal with one version as opposed to another.
Hopefully somebody else can chime in and share their experience.
I want to download an update i saw on the sam mobile website.
So i can download and install any official firmware for i9295 on my phone, regardless the baseband, version number, etc? Right?!
My current carrier will still be working right?

[Q] Upgrading Baseband to 20C

There has been a fuzz lately about the new Baseband the LG has to offer us. Some people argue that by upgrading their baseband to 20C, the annoying problem with the RIL gets finally fixed, while others say that it's the same.
I am currently on CM11 M10, and my question is as follows:
Since I have RIL problems with my device and want to test out the new Baseband to see if it actually makes a difference, how can I (safely) do it?
From what I found out, 20C is only out for Italy and Germany. I live in Greece and I don't know if flashing a different country's Baseband would hurt my device. If someone would clarify that for me, that'd be great!
Also, the safest way to do it (as far as I know), is by flashing the kdz of 20C, and then re-flashing the ROM I was on previously (on my case CM11). Is that actually the way to do it? Are there any incompatibilities with 20C and CM11 M10?
Thank you in advance!
Some might find this questing a bit obvious, but since I've seen a lot of people complaining about RIL problems, while they haven't tried out 20C, I guess this will help them!

OK, first thing is that I don't know if it fixes the issues, I haven't had it before (I'm not using pin protection) so I just can't say if it's fixed.
Anyway there are no compatilility issues since Greece is in European Union and Germany too. (I think there are some certificates that prooves frequecy compatibility for EU so I think that must be same for all countries in EU - like me in Czech Republic, next to Germany)
CM runs same as on my stock baseband 20B but you can easily flash your old baseband back if you encounter any issues
I hope I helped you a bit, try and report yourself.
also you can backup your current data and rom in recovery and flash 20C + recovery (it will be wiped). Then you can restore your backup. Bootloader remains unlocked.

Thank you for your response. So if I got this right, flashing a ROM (like CM) most of the times does not change my Baseband. My baseband remains the same from whichever I had from the KDZ, unless I flash a ROM that changes my Baseband (CM is not one of those). Is this correct?

nope baseband is not related to rom, it's related to kdz (firmware from lg) you flash

I get it now. Thank you very much for your help! I'll test out 20C and I'll report back!
