Replace ringtones: Impossible unless you root? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Apparently, unless I am missing something, I can't put in alternate ringtones unless I root. It seems you can for individuals under "contacts" but under main ringtones, unless I am missing something, you can't. This is SO FREAKIN BACKWARDS; I could on symbian 4 years ago! Am I missing something?

OR you can open up the music app, find a song you want to use as a ringtone, press "menu" and choose "use as ringtone".
You can also install MP3 Ringtone Maker or something from the market and shorten the song(s) that you have on your phone, so it starts playing where you want it to play.

Ok, thanks! I was trying to set it from the "ringtones" menu. Just couldn't believe that this couldn't be done; don't know why you can't choose from the ringtone menu, though. Would seem logical. I can make ringtones through reaper DAW.

Yeah i don' know. I think it's possible to do it on my Desire HD with Sense, so it might be a TouchWiz thing.

Just download Zedge in the market. If they don't have the tones you want, you can upload one yourself and then set it as one in your phone.

Can't set my own custom ringtones anymore?

I recently upgraded to JH7, and realized that I can no longer use my own specific audio files as ringtones anymore...its only letting me use the stock ringtones.
When I go to Settings > Sound and Display > Voice call ringtone , the only ringtones I can choose from are the ones that came with the phone. It's the only thing that pops up. Theres nothing for me to click anymore that lets me search my android system for audio files.
Anyone know how to fix this?

I never noticed a way to browse for ringtones. What I did was create two folders on the internal storage.... one called ringtones and one called notifications. I placed my sound files in those folders, disconnect USB then I can see them in the list of choices when selecting a ringtone or notification sound.

Did you maybe apply the GPS fix that results in media scanner FC'ng? From what I can work out that is the kind of thing media scanner does on boot or remounting of the sdcard, it scans for media to add to the various areas so if it isn't running that would explain why the custom ringtones aren't showing up in the list.
Alternatively you could use My Files to browse your sdcard and set the ringtone that way.

Can you plug your phone into the computer, choose mass storage, then pull the notifications down to choose "mount" then use Windows explorer to see internal storage?

When viewing internal storage in Windows Explorer, Do you have a notifications and ringtones folder at the root? If not, create them and drop sound files in there, unplug and try again. If you already have them, see if you are able to rename the existing files or drop new ones in the folers, unplug and try again. Also try restarting the phone. If that doesn't work, I am not sure what else to do, sorry.
under /sdcard/ there should be media folder
create the following directories if they don't exist:
Code:
/sdcard/media/audio/notifications/
/sdcard/media/audio/alarms/
/sdcard/media/audio/ringtones/
Drop the audio files you want into those specific directories and they will appear in the chooser when you're in settings.
I'm having a problem with ringtones in contacts. Not able to set custom ones for contacts. Well I can set em, they just aren't used. The general ringtone is used. Idk, bout to wipe again. Any suggestion?

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think there was ever an option under "Settings > Sound and Display > Voice call ringtone" for custom sounds. I vaguely remember not being able to find it there either when I first got my phone in July. So I'm assuming the update from last week didn't "remove" this. I think the only way to set a custom ringtone is to apply it to individual contacts in the Contacts app.

I had thought the same thing a few times because I simply forgot to click Save after I chose the actual ringtone on my SD card. What happened was that I went to my contact, then I set a custom ringtone and I assumed by choosing it that I was good. But then I mistakenly hadn't clicked Save before I backed out of the Contacts app so it defaulted back to the default ringtone.
Not sure if you did the same thing as I did. Just wanted to put it out there.

Thanks, but I have saved many times with many different ringtones. In t their contact info, I can se the ringtone is set for phone, google, ect, but when they call, I get to ear the standard ringtone. They are all f ringtones I got with the zedge app. Idk.
Uhh, this thread is really old, but I found out how to bypass this problem.
If you use a the app Ringdroid (free) you can use it to set ringtones. Apparently it actually adds them to your ringtone folder because the show up in the settings menu afterwards.
Yeah. Ringdroid is all you need...

My problem was with the first rooting process saving all of your settings as they were and not letting you change them. Wifi, ringtones, gps, everything.

[Q] Notification alerts

How do i get custom notification sounds to list? I have a few sounds in a folder i'd like to use, but when i go to pick the notification sounds for email or SMS, i cannot pick my sound. there are just the normal stock sounds to choose from.
I have also tried Ringdroid but i always get a FC.

You don't need Ringdroid.
Setup the following folders at the root of your memory card: alarms, notifications, ringtones
The tones held in these folders will list in the corresponding settings.
And there you have it. I knew it was simple. Thanks!

how to make sure all your apps are closed

How do you know when an app is completely closed since there's no task manager. Cause I've noticed that even if you hit the home key if you hit the back key afterwards it will still go to your open apps. Is there a key you can hold that will close down all applications.
WP7 doesn't multitask, so you will only have one app running at a time -- except, perhaps, if you're playing music via Zune.
When you hit back, what you're seeing is a recovery from something MS call 'tombstoning', which is saving the state of an app before shutting it down, and restoring the app back to where it was once you restart it.
If you run a game, you'll probably notice a delay after you hit 'back', while it reloads.
thanks for the info. I see what you mean.
How are you multitaskign Zune? If I leave zune in any way whetehr back, home or clickign on a text it shuts it down
Well atleast we don't have to worry about apps draining battery in the back ground.... Just trying to look at the bright side
So far the only things I'm disappointed is by the bad quality videos on YouTube, no multitask, and I can't use a regular mp3 song as a ringtone

Music should continue to play no matter how you quit Zune, even if you put the phone in standby. Then you can access the music via the toast window that appears when you hit vol-up/vol-down.

You can't, no. There was talk about being able to buy ringtones from the marketplace, but I don't think the users would accept that. I'd probably expect it to come with the update in January.
hopefully in january we will get most of the missing features we want

NOt sure that this will come in Jan. I think it's a legal thing to do with the way Zune Pass is licensed (which is only to play music - not use it as a ringtone)...
this is just from word of mouth - but seems to make sense....
I don't mind if it won't let me use Pass music as a ringtone, I'd like to put my own custom sound in there, so WP7 doesn't end up like iPhone where almost everyone has the same ringer, and when a phone goes off everyone reaches for their phone.
Even the iPhone allows for custom ringtones, you just have to load them through iTunes. I really hope Microsoft implements custom ringtones soon. I also hope that they, unlike the iPhone, allow for custom notification tones as well. On the iPhone you have to SSH in and replace the files manually.

[Q] A lot of general questions on how to use android/note3

First time android user, ive had my note 3 for barely a day. Just switched from the iPhone 4s, so my switch to android has been surprising to say the least.
The spoiler below summarizes my first struggle/rant with how "amazing" android customization is.
They say android is very customizable, and it is, but what they don't tell you is that there are no good apps to do what you want to do. For example, I tried syncing my iTunes library to my android phone. Doubletwist wouldnt work because my library is in a different place than where iTunes installs normally, and it seems that iTunes only updates iTunes Library.xml instead of the iTunes Music Library.xml, so not all my music is transferred to my phone anyway. Good interface, bad performance. Right now im using the free trial of iSyncr, which works great, but has a ****ty icon/interface, with the free trial of playerpro for a music player with a good interface and the ability to change play counts and ratings so it reflects in my iTunes library. Once those free trials end, I'll have to dish out 10 bucks just to do what was native on iPhone. I understand you can drag and drop music, but im not gonna go through my entire music library every time i have to transfer over a new song (so I avoid duplicates of songs already on there), or wait 30 minutes each time to transfer my whole library over every time I want to sync (replacing my old library). Google Play is nice and all, but it doesnt keep track of play counts, and I just hate the fact that its streaming. What if I was stuck in a class that was in a brick classroom that just killed my network connectivity and provided no wifi? (I do encounter this at my university some times). Does that mean I cant listen to music?
1. What are the LED notifications? What does red mean? what is blue? what is green? My note 3 didnt come with a manual... I think my phone told me when i was setting it up, but it was a lot to take in, so i forgot some parts.
2. Are the apps with a blue circle with a white arrow on the lower bottom left corner of the apps free? or just shortcuts to buy the app in the app store? I hope they are free apps that come bundled with it, since I would love to use the sketchbook app, but I dont wanna pay for it when I can use the mobile free version.
3. I want to get rid of the bloatware on my phone, but I have no clue which apps are bloatware and which ones are actually useful (besides the obvious ones that are branded with AT&T and samsung(are the samsung apps useful?). What ROM should I flash to get to stock android (and rooted since it seems like some of these roms come with root). I dont want any fancy themes or whatever, since most of the time, they suck.
4. Can I set lockscreen notifications? Or do i have to unlock my device, pull down the notifications bar, and go from there?
5. Can I customize the icons on the status bar? Like their location on the status bar (id like to have my 4g and at&t signal on the left, instead of the 4g in the middle of nowhere) or what shows up on the status bar?
6. What is the best themeing app called?
7. uhh thats all the questions I can think of now, but its only been a day. Once i start using it more, i'll have more questions, but im sure I can figure those out myself unless its a stumper.
edit:
7. How do I set my mail to automatically load images?

no, its actually not helpful at all. i can google the manual for myself, thank you very much. If i needed someone to google it for me, I wouldnt have posted.
The manual does not answer any of my questions. If you disagree, show me what page actually answers any of my questions.
Instead of just sending me to google.com, is it really that hard to take 1 minute of your time, and post your own opinion? I would only be okay with this if there was a stick or something that actually answered my questions, but theres not, so stop trying to be a smartass.

thank you for your help now lol. However, some of your answers dont make sense to me. To change the icon locations in the status bar, you said hold down the icons. However when I do it, notification center gets pulled down. Im guessing I need root for this?
and I tried using the gmail app, and I do like it, I would just prefer if I could change the default inbox to be set to all mail. Any way I can do this?

Sorry was thinking of too many things at the same time, updated answer > 5A) Check Wanam/Xposed. This needs root.
In regards to default inbox > all mail, I haven't tried to do that but let me see if I can figure it out. Will let you know.

It doesn't help that you're coming from a platform that doesn't want to make it easy for you to move...
I feel the same way about the streaming music services, and I tried to explain this to my roommate who works at google, and has drunk the koolaid. The impression I got from him was that we shouldn't be in places that don't have internet - and I'm all for avoiding those, but those times when I can't, I really want to be able to listen to music! At least the note 3 has a microSD card slot, so you can store lots of music on a 64GB micro SD card.
I just put all my music onto a MicroSD card and pointed Music Folder Player at it. I don't know if this will work on an iTunes library though.

What ROM should I flash to get to stock android (and rooted since it seems like some of these roms come with root). I dont want any fancy themes or whatever, since most of the time, they suck.

I don't think anyone said this already... You can't flash roms on an AT&T note3, the bootloader is locked. All we can do is root the stock rom (until someone comes up with a bootloader exploit). But you can do a lot with "just" root.
As for samsung apps being useful, probably all you want is the S-Pen related ones.
If you use the Email app (not just GMail), do not disable MyMagazine, however annoying it is; it breaks the basic email app if you do.
The apps with the circle and arrow are shortcuts to download the apps. I just checked on a few of mine, though, and they look to be free. It looks like Samsung had the courtesy not to install all of the bloatware they wanted to? Or maybe they have to pay royalties based on how many people actually install it...? (at least some of them are not samsung products)

Thats very true, but theres also no music manager for android either. Okay well, i'll give you winamp, but honestly, i hate the look of winamp, and most of the themes/skins for it are also terrible. I tried googling for themes for the android app, and I couldnt even find any (then again, i didnt look too hard. just a simple google search).
say what you want, iTunes is a pretty good music manager for those who like to manage their music, but arnt anal about tagging. Ive found that using iSyncr and PlayerPro together have been a great substitution for the same experience as on an iPhone. Except that you CANT SET PlayerPro as your default music app. Apparently people have had issues with the same thing, and theres just no solution on how to set PlayerPro as your default app. I might try finding another music app soon if I cant figure it out, since I play my music through bluetooth in my car, and if I cant choose the songs through my cars system, theres no point.
What do you mean change songs through your car's system? Is it really too much trouble to pick up your phone and press the skip button on whatever music player is running.
And what do you mean by "default music app"? If you want to run something different than what you have, just put that icon on your home screen and open it instead.
I don't know why former iOS sheep have to make things so complicated, like" how do I get this to look/act/do the same as my iPhone "? Something sent you this side of the Isle, just embrace android for a few day whilst you learn the basics of the platform and your device.

Were you able to select the music before on your iPhone through Bluetooth? Because I would love to find what ever head unit/car you have, because my wife would love that. Only place I've ever seen seen that is if you plug in the iPhone, never though Bluetooth.

Is there any way to choose custom sounds for notifications?

I accidentally selected the phone storage for the location to search for sounds before I changed to settings to always ask and even though I hit cancel at the time I'm stuck with this selection. I made the choice in the Android messages app and tried settings>apps>messages>clear defaults but it didn't change and now I noticed that it's my only choice for other notification sound in other apps too! What am I missing? How do I get it to let me pick the path every time now?
I use Google's messages so I never saw anything that let me choose (also unrooted), but any sounds placed in to notifications folder on the root of the phone and sdcard can be choosen. Just note that it would use the meta tag info, if there are none then it just shows up on list as an entry called 'sound' (possible to have multiple sound entry)

Hmmm... Android message? or the Built in message? Anyway, you could try installing Zedge (ringtones app) and then from within the app try to change the sound. Maybe it will prompt you to reselect the location?

Both apps actually, all notification sounds go to the stick sounds. I can set a sound from Zedge but not to a specific contact or app. I'm looking to get the options back when I click on notification sound in an app.
As a long shot you could try resetting the sound picker app

I don't know which app that is
I ended up just clearing all defaults. It sucks but I couldn't pin point the app.

Well. At least you got it. But for future reference... Maybe look in Settings...Apps... then click on the top right 3 dots.
I found some interesting default apps options.
You can select different ringtones for different contacts. Select a contact you want to change the ringtone for (make sure you've previously downloaded the ringtone you want) and then edit. Scroll down to more then at the bottom of the options you can choose a custom ringtone and message tone.

Ok. Settings...Apps...3 Dots top right corner...Default Apps....Default App Selection....Ask before setting default apps.
You're going to need to clear the default for the app first...then redo it....it will ask, Just once...or Always.

This is what I did after I made my selection. The problem was I couldn't locate the app that kept me from selecting it in notifications do I cleared all defaults. Not a complete loss but mildly inconvenient.

Yeah, unfortunately that would be the only way (since you don't remember the app)...that way, when you select...the option should pop up everytime, as long as you select Just Once everytime.
I'm having the same issue but that options to change message tone is not available on the Oreo Beta, hope the include it in the final build.

Possibly. Although the Contacts app is made by Samsung and isn't included in Android stock (as far as I know). So you might just have the most stable version available whilst they tweak it to work with Oreo.
I personally don't use it as no one ever messages me/calls me.

And yet you still paid a large amount of money for this phone...
Bet you'd also have a panic attack if you realised you'd left it at home too...
