Hi I've been flashing different ROMs for some time now and it's quite irritating that I have to redownload all the apps that I've installed with the previous ROM after flashing the new one. So I would like to know if there is anyway that I can just flash a new rom and do a restore of the apps I downloaded? And if I can, how? or you can direct me to another link, I'll be very much appreciative.

Use Titanium Backup or My Backup Root to backup your apps and restore them.
Try the appbrain market app https://market.android.com/details?id=com.appspot.swisscodemonkeys.apps
Rerware's MyBackupPro seems to be the best solution for doing exactly what you are looking for, in a very simple way.
It goes to the extent of even backing up your home screen layout, app settings etc in one click.
If you need a little more complicity, Titanium backup would help.
My money is always on MyBackupPro, give it a shot am sure you''ll find it easy and convenient
Thanks for the replies! I'll definitely try them out!

u can make a backup of your rom, then flash a new one and if u dont like it, u can flash back to your first rom and restore the backup.
What u mean by servise settings? Like provider settings for mms, internet, ....? If so, then almost every rom has app called connection setup that will automatically detect your provider and setup your settings.
lol i was about to post the same question as well. now that i know this i have one question, would it be better to get a start a new rom when i get a microsd memory or is it enough with the phone memory?

the rom is stored in phone memory, but when u want to install new apps, its better to install them to sd.

More info on the back up side of things would be great.. i have found some old thread on dumping.. but at the time of writing there was no way to compile the parts of the dump and re flash the ROM
Is there an easy way to do this now?

U can use "sprite backup" or another software to backup your settings and other stuff.
check this:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=386336
I could search through the whole forum but maybe is a guide on it's place here.
Is there a way to backup all things except the installed Rom and Kernel, and maybe the launcher?
So smsses, applications and it's settings, keyboards etc.
Purpose: being able to install clean CM and applying a kernel and after that restoring all my applications, smss's etc...
Thanks for taking the time to explain this!

Why don't you just reflash new ROM without wipe? All you data you want stays and you have new rom.
I want to make sure nothing old remains. Why do they advise to do a wipe anyway?
wrong section but titanium backup should do the trick

To ensure that no remnants of the previous Rom/kernel remain. If you notice weird behavior wipe is advisable
With other words it is unclear. That is why I want to do that.
Now I have Tit. backup on my device, however never really used it. (I bet 90% of the people don't). So my question remains. A little guide to be fool proof to do this.

It's very easy. If you are using Titanium (the paid version) go into the app and press the backup all apps + data option. This will copy everything. Once you wipe and reinstall a ROM go back into Titanium and press restore all apps +data. Pretty much simple as that
Thanks man!!! That indeed is not to difficult!
I am fairly new to all of this but feel I have a firm grasp of things. Having said that, I have lost the ability go install apps from any source. My backups are just files and the market is juat for window shopping. Please help me... Oh yeah, already flashed 2 different ROMs to try to start fresh with no luck.

Could you be more specific what isn't working now that was working before? How are you trying to install apps? from .apks on the phone or by sideloading? Can you load apps from the market? What did you use to create backups?
Best way to start fresh is to flash to stock, and start over. Whats ROMs have you been running?
what isn't working
First off I'm on ROM 3 and I flashed to stock first. Anyways it asks if I want to install an app I click ok and get the action bar bug it never finishes. I've tried from the market and from my SD card. My backups were made with Titanium Backup.
Thank you for your time.

What is ROM 3?
You didn't explain which way you are trying to install an app before the bug happens. All ways?
To be 1000% honest, you're starting to sound like a customer... I'm phone support for a major cable/internet company, and when I ask what's wrong, and it can't be articulated, I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S WRONG.
Feel free to PM me for help or ask in this thread.
If your phone is not right, then flash to stock and start over. What is ROM 3?

Hi, when i try to send a text to multiple people with one text message, I'm only allowed to send to 10 people max, is there a way to get rid of this?
Cheers.

I believe this could be a limitation of the ROM or the service you are using. Search the developer forum for a ROM that gets past this limit and check with your phone service provider (I read somewhere that Verizon has this limit, but can't vouch for that as I am in different country)
thanks, but I am new to this whole android world, this is my first android coming from a nokia n900.
I have been reading, but it seems I need to root my phone which is now difficult because as soon as I received the phone i updated it and now have the kernel LA6 instead of original LA4 which is more difficult to root.
As for the thread you provided matius44, does the .apk file only work with ics roms or can one install it with just a rooted GB rom.
----
Just so I can be sure, I do want to root, but I'm slightly confused, is it correct in saying that I need to downgrade the fw and kernel to an older stock rootable rom then root the phone? or is this wrong?
Yes- have a look at the developer forum - there are details here...

That used to be the case, but there is now an easier way which flashing pre rooted ROMs directly and you're good to go, here is the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025
As for the .apk mod, I never tried myself honestly but there are versions for GB and for ICS, any .apk with ZCLP in it's name is for ICS you don't need that, take the other ones
I've tried dr. ketan's way and it didnt work for me, maybe i didnt know what I was doing,
Ill try these pre rooted roms, I just basically flash them to the phone, does all my data in my phone get wiped off clean? if so, what do i use to make a backup.
btw sorry for all these questions.
and thanks in advance.
It's been that long since I rooted my phone I've forgotten how to do a backup without rooting! Titanium backup needs root.
Have you tried booting into recovery mode then doing a backup from the menu that appears (vol up+home then press power until Galaxy Note boot screen appears then let go of all buttons) I'm pretty sure you can backup from there.

You can have it either ways, wiped clean or not, up to you..
At the pre rooted ROMs thread there is a screen shot showing the three file you will find in the zips and the places they should be put at in Odin, if you do NOT want to wipe your data do NOT choose the CSC file, only flash PDA and phone (modem)
Or you can use Titanium Backup to backup your user apps only, do NOT backup system apps but your settings will be lost of course
Your preference
EDIT: Sorry forgot you don't have root lol! Sorry have no idea how to backup without root, try the poster above me suggested
Congrats Matius! 1000 posts! That is great work!
no you can't backup using that method, it just give me options to reboot, wipe everything off and some other things. all i need to backup is mainly my contacts and some data, ill try kies.
Kies should work. I wish I could remember what I did to create the backup - I've done a quick google and only found using adb and a terminal prompt, which I have never used. A quick search of Google Play shows some that may be worth a try and are free.
Wish I could be more help but for the life of me can't remember what I did that first night with my Note and got it to backup.
Good luck with Kies and enjoy flashing ROMs!
even kies doesnt work. i think astro backup will backup my files, as for settings ill just have to deal with it.
OK - good luck!
BTW - If you get heat issues after flashing - don't panic! Leave the phone off for five to ten minutes to cool down then charge it for an hour with the screen off. I found this was my biggest worry when I started flashing. Got really hot - thought the screen would melt. Now I just use the above process and never have problem.
All the best!

am i rooted? if so... thanks all. now to read through forum to see what the best gingerbread rom is or if ics rom is worth using now.

To make sure you are rooted use a file explorer app (root explorer or ES file explorer)and try to copy a file (pic, video or anything) to /system folder
If it's saved then congrats you're rooted
Hi there!
I have a bit of a problem... I'm fairly new to the Android environment having only just joined the 21st Century a couple of weeks ago with the purchase of my first fancy phone. After rooting and deleting a load of .apk's to shed some of the unnecessary Samsung, et al, programs I have found that the Google Calendar app is not working on my phone. It simply closes itself as soon as I start it up.
I have tried installing a couple of other calendar apps, and they will run but when it comes to syncing the programs seem to crash when I get to the add account pages...
I suspect that the problem is due to having deleted the files SecCalendar.apk and SecCalendarProvider.apk.
Does anyone have any ideas? And can anyone please suggest where I might be able to get copies of the calendar files which come installed on the phone from the factory install?
I certainly should of backed everything up before I went ahead and deleted these files! But you live and you learn... Whoops
This is my first post here, so thanks for taking the time to read.
Cheers,
Ollie.

p.s. I've found a few different versions of the SecCalendarProvider.apk on various other threads but can not seem to install any of them.
Also, my system details are: GT-I9305 - JB - 4.1.2

a sure way to fix this would be to reinstall the rom . if you flash it with mobile odin you can retain root and the flash counter will not be affected. alternatively you can flash with kies or odin , if you flash the stock rom you will have to reroot, good luck
Factory reset first .
jje
Thanks for the responses guys
I'm happy to do a full reset but the one thing that I'd like to retain are my contacts: I spent a lot of time going through and creating links between my contacts and their various accounts (fb/skype/email/etc...). Is there a way to do this?

Great, thanks for that suggestion. I already have Titanium installed so I am thinking that I'll backup everything then do a full factory reset, then root, backup the calendar files that I'm missing and restore my backup and copy the missing calendar files into system/apps.
Do you reckon that will work?
Cheers
you don't need to factory reset, jje is wrong. just reinstall the exact rom you had and you'll have no issues
I was under the impression that the OP did not have the rom as he had already been given that solution .
jje
Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I ended up downloading Kies and restoring from there. It backed everything up and then reinstalled everything. Would of been nice to roll my sleeves up and get my hands dirty with the nuts and bolts of it all, but this solution has worked well so I'm chuffed I don't have to start from scratch
Cheers!
you're welcome
