OK....I got my Dell back to stock, did Update to HC (Not ROM flash) using NVFlash, and now I am having trouble rooting. I can't use Gingerbreak, tried 2 versions of SuperOneClick, it keeps hanging up on "Waiting For Device" and I can't install CWM unless the thing is rooted but i can't root unless I have it installed? I did download CMV off the market and when I go to FLASH RECOVERY, it tells me its unsupported......now what do I do?

so I recently screwed up while flashing Doc's latest ROM. Bricked my phone and had to go to the service center to get it fixed. Did not have the 3 button mode enabled.
Got it fixed on the spot and I want to get the ROMs installed again.
But now i have a new series of issues. I cant seem to get CWM installed.
ROM Manager give me a "an error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!"
When i startup ROM Manager, it states "Superuser was not found at "/system/xbin/su"."
Installed Superuser and no diff. i get the above message in ROM Manager.
And I get a "failed" message when i boot into recovery to flash update.zip taken from here. http://www.mmus.us/forum/showthread.php?t=13957
What's wrong?

If it helps, I got it from the Samsung Service Center @ PS(singapore)
update.
Managed to get root access thru this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
but still cant get CWM installed. placed the file in the phone, changed it to update.zip. and it "failed" to install.
Try getting the free Rom manager from market and patch up the update.zip from there.
I deleted the update.zip. then reboot into recovery thru Quickboot. then ran the update.zip with errors again.
3e is a *****.
Can't install CWM on Android 4.0.3 Evo 3D
I had updated my HTC Evo 3D OTA then unlocked it using HTC Method. Unlock success than I flashed recovery with CWM Shooter. Flash success but when I load recovery, the phone just boot up normally. When I open ROM Manager it says:
You must root your phone for ROM Manager to function. Superuser was not found at "/system/bin/su" or "/system/xbin/su". Use Google Search on your computer to find instruction to root your phone.

You prolly fixed this already but in case someone else has this issue. Try installing Busybox from the market.
Same issue and won't boot into clockworkmod recovery

I rooted my phone with eclair installed and used clockworkmod recovery with no issues until I one day wanted to go back to stock and attempted a restore of the backup I made right before flashing the OverStock ROM. The phone wouldn't boot, so finally got the Overstock to go back. Phone worked fine for the most part, but from then on to get into recovery mode, required shutting down and using button presses (Up/down vol/PWR button) and it would go in fine. Could never get Clockworkmod to go into recovery mode with a click. Saw that (finally) Samsung has published a Froyo update, so took back to stock eclair using ODIN3 so I could use Kies mini to update. Did a factory reset to remove all old info directories and data. Update went perfect, but want the option to use the rooted apps (Titanium backup and ClockworkMod--purchased apps) to play with my phone as I see fit. Used SuperOneClick to root phone and verified I can get superuser with using terminal emulator, successfully executing "su" command. Problem is I can't get into CWM recovery. Only get "Android system recovery <3e>". Tried uninstalling CWM and reinstalling. Re-Flashed CWM recovery and it lists version 2.5.1.2 as current and latest.
I obviously need CWM recovery to flash different ROMS, but wanted a current backup before starting. Can't get any further until I figure this out. Any help would be appreciated. I was a noob, just a month ago, but was feeling pretty confident until this happened. Guess I'm still a noob, but just a little more dangerous now. Thanks in advance.
Just noticed that I wasn't in a phone specific thread, so here's my phone details... Samsung Vibrant (T-Mobile).
CWM issues with Milestone
In the last update of the RomManager was added support for version ClockWorkMod 3.x for Milestone - but still unable to use the CWM as standard recovery.
Using another recovery as OR1.4 you can start CMW from the SD card - but that does not solve the problem of RomManager stay with completely limited functions.
The Rom Manager is having updates constantly and I think we have a working version for Milestone soon - but in part I'm upset to see that the Milestone is listed as a supported device - when in fact it is not.
I bought the full version of Rom Manager because I believe it is a great tool and I hope someday I can use all its functions.
I have the same problem. I use OpenRecovery for Sholes to do those things. I hope we can use those tools like a normal user even a day.
I am trying to install cyanogenmod 7 but rom manager just doesn't seem to be installing the flash clockworkmod recovery option, it takes a second to finish and it says "sucsessfully downloaded clockworkmod" not "succsessfully installed clockworkmod" so when i try to open recovery mode it keeps going to the defualt android recovery mode and i can't install CM7 because the install fails at verification.
I tried using an older version of the clockworkmod flash file but it says "an error occured while downloading your recovery", so i don't know what im doing wrong it could be because i am installing this on a motorola flipout which is identicle internally to the droid so i have been using that ROM but i think this is unlikley the problem.
Please help.
thanks!

Even if it's identical on the inside, there might be firmware differences that you are not noticing. Try flashing a ROM for the Flipout instead.
Hi there, after rooting my phone with the "DoomLord's via Zergrush Exploit" , and after installing rom manager and flashing clockworkmod. I just can't access it.
If I load into the bootloader and click recovery, I get an image with a ! sign and a picture of an android, the same happens when I load recovery through rom manager. I have flashed the recovery twice now and my phone's just not having it. My phone works no problem, I just dont understand it
All I want to do is to make a backup and install a custom rom
Am I doing somthing wrong?
(Yes, my bootloader is locked BTW)
Very simple - you didn't flash the recovery properly, so you're getting to stock recovery.
Yup like Jack_R1 stated, the flash didn't stick or you didn't do it right.
Open Rom Manager, at the top it will tell you what recovery you have.
Does it show anything?
You could also try adb if you have that setup
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Nexus_One:_Full_Update_Guide#Installing_a_Custom_Recovery_Image
You could even install it via terminal on your phone
Heck try this recovery, it's good
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1291970
Try THIS. Install the application and it will install the best recovery
Rom manager tells me that i have clockworkmod 5.0.2.0
I'll try installing the recovery through terminal when i get back to my pc
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
EDIT: Having seen the other recovery you've stated, i'll try and install that.
Also, does it matter about which version of android i'm running? could that result of a bad install of the recovery through clockworkmod?
Its 2.3.4 stock rom if anyone's intrested
FINAL EDIT:
Thank you!
4EXT flashed perfectly, after using the app to reboot into the bootloader, it loaded up that. Many thanks!
I just traded in my Infuse for a Captivate (I originally traded my old Captivate for the Infuse). I remember very well how to root, install custom ROM's, use Odin, etc. and still have all the needed files.
But nothing works. The Captivate is running stock UCKB1 Froyo 2.2. I cannot root the phone using SuperOneClick or z4root: the former just says that the adb server is out of date, kills it and then nothing after giving an error saying that automatic failed; the latter just force closes after I select either root option. I've already tried factory resetting the phone and making sure I have the proper drivers, USB debugging is enabled, using different computer and cables, etc.
I used Odin to flash a CWM kernel, but when I load up CWM, I get "E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/command" and I'm unable to do anything except scroll through the options. I can't actually activate any of the options. I also tried using Odin to flash GB bootloaders and reflashing a kernel, but nothing has changed.
Can anyone help me out here?
Edit: Solved by Odin-flashing a rooted GB ROM.
What kernel did you try to use that gives you that error? If your end goal is flash a rom, then 1 click to something and flash a gb kernel with cwm and flash rom (get everything in your phone before starting). I would 1 click to GB.
Use my guide to start fresh from
rooted GB
and maybe you can go to ICS from there

Thanks for the responses. Odin to a rooted Gingerbread ROM allowed me to flash custom ROM's.
