that the User: Rick#2 suggested using paid programs to which I've found free alternatives. I'd have posted as a direct reply there, but as "noob", I'm unable.
Anyways:
First thing that I noticed was this comment: "Unzip the attachment from the first post to the root of your sdcard, ie: don't unzip it into any folders after browsing to your phone on your PC, just put them in the root of the drive." <==Suggesting that users unzip and then stating to not unzip becomes a contradiction. I think what you meant to say was more along the lines of "Unzip the files directly into your SDCard, as there's no need to do it on you PC".
It would also be wise to state that some "NooB" users might not realize that there's more than one version of an SDCard for this phone, the Droid 3, available to be putting the files into. Standard transfer methods go to the EXTERNAL SDCard, not the internal one, so this alone could cause some users to fail at being able to do this procedure. Since this is likely the case to happen, a suggestion to verify that it's in the /sdcard and not the /external/sdcard might be of note, and those users reading this attempting this mod with the "no file in this area" problem simply need to use a file manager like File Expert (free) to do move the files from the External SDCard to the SDCard.
Next up, the apps needed to do this:
You suggested SetCPU (not free)
I suggest AnTuTu CPU Master Free
You suggest Root Explorer (not free)
I suggest Mount /system (rw / ro) (free, does the same thing, with a lot more ease than Root Explorer's way)
You suggested Better Terminal Emulator (not free)
Don't know the how much benefit of this might be over the free Terminal Emulator you thankfully suggested might be, but I can't imagine it'd be worth paying for.
Otherwise, I'd like to thank you for your post. Very nice work, and happy to say that I personally got mine to work without error the first time via your instructions.
There's a new method to overclock on rootzwiki I would suggest using. It uses a kernel module rather than a binary. Although it's in a boinic forum it is availabe for many other devices including the droid 3. It's not that difficult to accomplish and can also be done with free apps. Antutu will show the correct frequency and the min frequency does not have to be maxed out.

There's a few extra steps if you unzip on a pc, you have to push more, usually have to set permissions.
Honestly, if you wanted to tell this to Rick#2 you could have done it in a pm, there's no guarantee he'll even read this here...

I recently downloaded droid explorer and a loving it. But one problem i have been encountering is that i can copy from my phone to my PC but copying from my PC to the phone on anything but the sd card doesn't work. Also deleting doesn't work either on all but the sd card.
Now i know i could use adb in cmd but droid explorer is so much easier.
I don't think he ever made it change the folders to read/write. I would ask this question in the Droid explorer in the apps and games section.

This is coming, honest. I have been working on a "side project" that is basically ADB for .net. It is a modified port of the original java version of the Android Debug Bridge, for .net. Actually it is the DDMS library.
I am going to start the change over to that library in Droid Explorer, and when I do, it has the stuff built in to it to make a partition RW/RO, and check the current state of the partition. Also, once it is implemented in Droid Explorer, the "Root + busybox" will be dropped, unless you want to do things that would require root. But you will be able to browse and copy from the device and such with out the need for root, or busybox...
If you have any questions, honestly, your best bet is to ask them in the Apps thread. I very rarely visit the Q&A forum.

I like (as I'm sure others do) to install apps2sd, something I'm able to do thanks to the actively-rooted and cyanogen-modded N1 that I use.
Unfortunately, the actual *install* files *themselves* from all Market-downloaded apps seem to remain in the phone's internal memory, clogging up preciously limited space. How do I get rid of these install files? I tried using a file manager to go into the mnt/asec directory to get rid of *.pkg's, but these seem to be uninstall-protected (I'm not even sure if I'm making a mistake from the get-go in trying to purge the *.pkg's), so I'm kind of back to the drawing board on this one.
Any help on this would be pretty invaluable folks.

If you've installed a lot, your dalvik cache will grow pretty big. That's found in /data/dalvik-cache.

You need SU access to view /data, make sure what you're using to browse it supports that.

Your DATA folder is inaccessible, unless you use Root Explorer or other file explorer with root privileges (ES Explorer, for example - but it doesn't work with all ROMs).
There are no PKGs. There are APKs. And you're wrong in your assumption that they aren't used. This is no PC, this is Android, forget what you used to know, you need to learn again. APKs are the actual applications being ran, without them you can't execute anything, and using old Apps2SD, AKA Apps2EXT, you can move your /data/data to SD (EXT partition) and /data/dalvik-cache to /cache. CM doesn't support Apps2EXT, but it can be easily installed and used, following the guide in DarkTremor's thread. Read Wiki in my sig, it'll point you in the right direction. You can start by reading FAQ, question 9.

1) The .apk isn't the install file it _is_ the application. The are no "install only" parts to an android app
2) Anything on /mnt/asec is already on your sdcard using froyo-style a2sd
3) .so files in /data/data/xxx/lib and /data/dalvik-cache are the primary causes of full /data partitions
Ok so there's alot of info. regarding Internal SD card failure and Froyo.
My question is will this occur with a natural Froyo update instead of a flash ?
I have a stock i9000m - never even rooted, no lag fix, nothing.
I heard Froyo will be coming soon (im guessing via Kies?)
Will the Froyo update mess up my Internal SD as appears to be happening with Froyo Flashs ?
Also, will I lose my apps when I update via Kies to Froyo ?

From what I've seen on here there is no direct link to sd failure from flashing. I think just as many have failed that were not flashed. Always possible though that a botched flash could spell doom.
An official update should not damage your phone. If it does, you should return it to bell for repair or replacement.
Many on here recommend a factory reset after update, I'm planning to do that myself. Reinstalling apps is no big deal. Takes only minutes and because they are linked to your google account you don't have to buy paid apps again.

However, the linking to the Market account does not restore unpaid apps. These you will have to install again, and of course, you have to remember which ones these are. This could be time consuming.
In my case it took about 2 hours. I had many apps, and in some I could not remember the names: A fair amount of time was lost searching for the names.
Any easy solution to this is to back up this directory on your phone afore you reset:-
Directory: /data/app
It contains all the .apk of your apps.
use the ADB to get a shell on your phone - There are a few guides around on how to set this up. Once set-up, please use this command to get a shell:
adb shell, and then su to root:
adb shell
su
* How to backup.
Change into the directory
cd /data/app
Archive the files to a file on your SD card. In this case the archive tar file is called /sdcard/apps.tar. You can put it anywhere you want with any filename you like.
tar cvf /sdcard/apps.tar .
* Perform a factory reset.
* Restore the files.
Here you should extract the archive into a tempory directory and use a file manager like Astro to click on and then install the apk files:
Create a temp directory for the files:
mkdir /sdcard/apkrestore
Change to the directory:
cd /sdcard/apkrestore
Extract the files from the archive:
tar xvf /sdcard/apps.tar
List the file files in the dir - you will see many files with .apk extensions.
ls /sdcard/apkrestore
Install the apks
Start ASTRO file manager and navigate to /sdcard/apkrestore
Click on the apk you wish to install.
Its funny how people seem to omit this information: as if they think people only ever buy apps and never use the free ones ;P

Awesome info. I guess I will try this.
Questions. I obviously have to have a root to use these ADB commands ? I haven't rooted phone yet.
Other question, is there an easier way to back up all apps? Like what if I root ? I can get Titanium Backup Pro -- will this work? would this back up apps to my sdcard ? I have a 32gb external card too -- can I back up apps to this or no ?

Issue 1: I'm trying to install ClockPackage.apk, Gallery3D.apk, MyFiles.apk in order to have the stock clock. I keep getting the error "Failure [INSTALL_PARSE_FAILED_NO_CERTIFICATES]" when i try to use the command adb install (any of the 3).apk. I have also tried "adb push" which doesn't seem like a valid command. I tried moving the 3 apk files to my sd card on the phone and using "installer" and "eoeAppinstaller" from the market and these fail as well. Any more suggestions? I really like this di11igaf's ROM, but I cannot stand the new alarm ( i like the gradual volume increase of the stock). I have tried a couple of market clocks, but they just didn't work for me. Thank you very much in advance.

At this point I can use the volume buttons to scroll up and down, but the power button will not select anything. The only thing I can do is remove the battery and boot the phone back up, which then takes me into CWM recovery v2.5.1.0. I was able to install the di11i add on, but I don't think that I'm supposed to be pulling the battery to get to this point.

Im no expert on this type of stuff but I use di11i roms and I just transfer apk's to the root of the phone through the regular mass storage mode and use root explorer for the rest.Havent had any problems yet.
As for issue 2 is the package a .zip file? If not that may or may not be the problem.
From my own personal experience the 3dapp isn't sign so I can't install it too

It is a zip file and it installed. What concerned me was the process. Should it have frozen up like that and forced a battery pull? Nothing I've read leads me to believe that was proper behavior of the CWM.

I don't have that directory. Are you creating it on the phone and then putting the files into it? I may have not been clear on what I am trying to do. I just looked into exactly what you were talking about and I got it figured out.It wasnt installing for me either but this is what I did and it works now.
Through mass storage mode I copied the 3 files to the root of the card.
Then I moved the files to the app folder which is inside the system folder.
I use root explorer for the moving.
When you move them into the app folder its gonna ask to overwrite say yes.
After you get everything moved it will work if you go to the app in the drawer.I never actually installed anything but did an overwrite.

u cannot see it in my files. u need to have root access, and something like root explorer.
So it looks like I could have just copied and pasted the files from the sdcard/Clock folder I placed them in to the /system/app folder using Super Manager. I swear I tried that and it failed before I went through all the crappy steps below. Oh well.
Ok this is going to sound pretty cheap, but I didn't want to pay the ~$4.02 for an ap that I was going to use three times. I did find another way. I used Super Manager and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877316&highlight=installing+apk post #3.
So for any other cheapskates out there.
1. Install Super Manager on phone
2. Install ADB on pc
3. Connect phone to pc and copy the three files ClockPackage.apk, Gallery3D.apk, and MyFiles.apk to the sd card. (I just drag and dropped in windows explorer)
4. Use Super Manager to move to /system/app/ and rename the existing file Gallery3D.apk (I renamed it to Gallery3D.old)
5. Use adb to copy the 3 files from the directory in which you originally placed them on the phone to /system/app/
in adb type:
adb shell
su
(accept the prompt on your screen)
cd /sdcard/whereveryoustuckfile
cp blahblahblah.apk /system/app/ (the red from Pirateghost).
6. Reboot
The clock and alarm work fine, but I cannot get Daily briefing option in alarm to work. I get a FC. I did install the "apk add on pack for 5.6" post 3 of http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897416 , but I dont think Daily Briefing was included in that. Any suggestions? And one last thing - what is the di11iBrowserfix.zip from post 3 of the thread above for? Thanks again to all who contributed.
I got the daily briefing working. Everything is almost perfect, but I would like two things still.
1. Is there anyway to change the tune that is played when you have smart alarm selected? I have a different tone selected, but I think once you select smart alarm it defaults to that new age tone.
2. My alarm goes off, I stop it, but then I have to unlock it before I see the daily briefing. Can anyone think of a way to have the phone unlock when I turn off the alarm. I know it is so insignificant, but it used to do that when it was stock and it was pretty cool.
Come one guys and gals - don't make me figure this one out by myself j/k but seriously I have surprised myself already by getting this far and I really don't have skill or knowledge for the last two things. I'm learning though....slowly.

Will I have too much trouble on flashing another kernel over the di11picKle? I was happy with speedmod + jk4... that was the best working config for me so far...

you can flash any kernel/modem using CWM, just make sure it is i9000's.

Nope. Get the CWM flashable zip, and copy to ur sdcard. Then go to CWM recovery console, and install this zip. Reboot.
But, please take a nandroid backup, and try to avoid OC kernels if u r unsure ur phone can handle it. Phones freeze when tried to oc beyond their capability.

I'm considering buying a HTC Vivid from AT&T, from what I've read, the bootloader for the AT&T Vivid is locked, but it is possible to temporarily unlock it. I also plan to overclock my phone, I've found custom kernels that can overclock the vivid, they say that the phone needs to be rooted. But is a temp root going to give me enough access to install the overclocking kernel? I have jailbroken consoles and HP Touchpad, but I haven't really played with Android or Linux. So if please excuse me if my terminology is used incorrectly. Thanks.
You can unlock the bootloader through HTC'S dev site and get perm root. Just follow the superguide in the development section and you will be good to go.

Thanks for the info. I'm new to this, after I rooted the phone, how do I install the app? I have an apk file and I tried using the Android Central SWM, but it doesn't work with my phone. I have also enabled the Applications from Unknown sources. But there's no way for me to install.
Edit: I saw that it installed an app called Superuser, but I can't install any apps through Superuser, do I need to put the apk file in a specific folder in order for Superuser to recognize it? Thanks.

That was helpful. I was just looking for a way to install apps to my phone. So far it seems like maybe I can modify the .bat script from the temp root method to install .apk files that way, but that seems risky and I don't want to mess up my brand new phone.

no, you just need to use some logic, and this little thing called SEARCHING
you want to install apps on your phone?
you just put them on your sdcard or download them from the phone itself, open a file manager, browse to the apk file and click on it. it will ask to install..... you are making this out to be way harder than it is. and you did not need root for that to take place. its a function of the OS, you dont need the computer in order to install apps.....this is all basic android stuff you could learn by using GOOGLE....
and you are right, this is a developers site, it is not a hold-my-hand site for noobs.....

No need to ask anywhere, google is your friend. Installing apps is very easy, and rooting isn't even necessary. As PG already said, it's as easy as using a file explorer, and also checking that box in the settings about unknown sources.

dude, all you have to do is plug in your phone and when it asks you set it to disk mode...it shows up as another drive on your computer...you dont need to use any kind of bat file....this is all seriously generic and basic android usage. as i stated before:
you have some reading to do......
its not to be mean, but seriously, you are asking stuff like this in the same breath as ROOTING your phone. this type of stuff isnt meant to be taken lightly or without some READING and comprehension. know what you are doing to your phone before you royally screw it up....
at this rate, i have a feeling it wont be long before we see a help thread....
I don't understand either. Why not do it the apk way? That is the easiest method. It takes like twenty second to allow unknown sources, go to file manager, click on the apk and install it.
