I'm running Gingerbread ROMs right now and hesitant to move to ICS. When are ICS ROMs good enough for daily use? I'm looking for stability and speed that is comparable to Apex and Mosaic. Prefer to use Apex right now because it's the most up to date and most stable.
You could read through the threads to see what others are saying. But I installed it on my Dads cappy a few weeks ago, and he hasn't had a single issue with it so far. Before that he was on Mosaic and was having a ton of issues. I used it for a couple of days when I put it on his phone, and it was probably the fastest, smoothest rom that I had ever run while I had the cappy. I would go for it.

Ya I'm taking a brief look, but not sure which to choose if I do move to ICS.
Basic AOSP (clean untouched googgle android) is Onecosmic's. The soon to be CM9 is team Hacksung. There is a themed modded one based of Team Hacksung's work. Wich one is more stable or not depends on the user, up to you to read and try.
I use teamhacksung's every day as my main ROM, and it works fantastically. I'm still running build 12, so there are some improvements since then, but I don't have any issues with it at all. It is significantly faster than all the other ROMS I have tried (I used to use Mosaic...). The only thing that is slightly worse is the battery life. If I use my phone a lot (more than texting...like, web browsing, youtube, etc), my phone dies before an entire day of usage. Granted, I did get my captivate the first day it came out, so there might be a hardware issue there too.
I highly recommend it. It was the best jump I have made, and it stopped me from getting the GS2. Now I can wait for the GC3

The 'best' ROM is whatever you find suits you. Best to just try a few out and make your own decision.

Any one with miui(GSM) experience?
Ok so check this out last night i went thru flashing 3 roms on my Tab, i flashed both of the MIUIs and the Boca Rom.
I must admit that within the next hours or so I was so determined to flash the kratos back.
So In my opinion the most practical and stable Rom is Kratos, MIUIS are not stable and not for tablets. Where as the Boca was by far the worst ROM ive ever seen or used. Its just so horrible, my tab felt and looked so cheap with Boca running on it.
So Imm stick to Kratos for now, its the best on the block so far.
P.S: I have nothing personal against BOCA's dev as I know its a work of alot of dedication and time but I also have to criticise on the build because it was just horrible and the look of it was really cheap. So no offense to the dev, I hope the dev takes it as a constructive criticism. Thanks.
I'll add in a voice for Overcome (running Kratos here). I started by trying to use the stock 2.3.3 ROM, and after having a number of problems with it took a chance on Overcome, and to my surprise it was actually substantially more stable and bug-free, though the startup splash screen is a tad overdone.
I'm afraid I just put an end to that bugless streak, though. I just posted a bug report to the Kratos thread about a problem with the VPN icon (namely, it doesn't change if the VPN gets disconnected).
I tried Overcome for a few weeks, tonight i installed MIUI, so we'll se...
I always used to have the overcome rom on the tab(great Roms), but I've had mssmison's miui rom installed the last few week, and its the smoothest its ever been, and quite stable.but then I always restock before I install an update/different rom.
There are some quirks, but nothing that hinders my use of the tab as a tablet.

it depends on which ROM you prefer.
every ROM is different, they need perfection. And custom ROMs are far from it. Anyway i prefer the official 2.3 Firmware

i tried MIUI, and...
Battery usage is wrongly displayed, camera app has a mind of it's own (blocks when i try to switch to front camera), no auto rotation (except browser), battery consuption is not better then overcome...
Back to overcome for me
(i have GT-P1000, GSM version, T-Mobile)
task650 rom all the way
Another vote for Overcome Kratos for me. Runs awesome!
I know that a lot here don't appreciate the "what's the Best ROM" threads but mine raises some important points and genuine questions that I believe the devs here need to take in consideration.
I've went through so many ICS ROMs and found that most don't even include a bugs list to know what works and what doesn't. So I'm directing these questions to you and hope to hear your opinion based on your experience as well as your knowledge of ROMs:
Which ICS based ROM is the most mature among the currently stable ones? Please post any bugs or point to what's not working if you refer to a ROM as a response.
Is it easy to get back to a Gingerbread ROM after flashing an ICS based ROM? Are there any caveats that i should know about before flashing any ICS ROM?
Thank you for your time and I appreciate your help and your opinions about this.
there are threads in the general section. please have a look

I've been using Team Rocket 1.5 and find it surprisingly stable (although, of course, there are problems. Just for a heads up, I would NEVER go back to Gingerbread. The girlfriend has Gingerbread on it and it's just so much snappier, not to mention the compatibility with ICS Applications (like Photoshop!). I'll name the few I have:
1. Toggle wifi via the 15 toggle addon and it will just kind of freeze, can't turn it on or off for a little while
2. Sometimes apps just kind of hang, when that happens just let it sort itself out and usually the phone will respond in about 15 seconds. No biggie to me.
3. I've had a SOD (Sleep of death) where the phone screen won't turn on and you end up powering down the phone; but honestly it only happened when I left Sync on in the background. Whether a coincidence or not. Haven't had it happen since turning that off during the day.
4. When trying to restore a backup I've had to restore the boot of the stock GB rom, then restore the ICS backup. Otherwise you really can't flash anything as the system isn't writable I don't believe.
Coming from the AT&T SGSII ICS ROM, this is BEYOND daily use. I just ordered this device off of Amazon and pretty much opened the package, rooted, and flashed this rom. It's fast, nearly everything works. Just have to deal with a few bugs. I'll let you decide whether or not to try it out, but I'm positive when I say I would NEVER go back. Good luck man!
None yet but for minimal bug disturbance, I'd say team rocket 1.5 is quite usable for daily use.

+1 I've been only on Rocket ROM v1.5, fast, stable and like ranger said, this is beyond daily use... really... no going back to GB as well...
It's so stable that I'm so reluctant to test anything else... no SOD, actually got it once and found out setcpu profile is causing it, uninstall and never had it for the past 5 days....
One thing that is bugging me is that the battery drain for the chinese ICS leak is unpredictable as the kernel is not so "refined" yet, you know what i mean
Now awaiting rocket v1,6 or midnote 2.1 if ever maxicet can get the N7000 kernel leak to work properly...
Should be getting my note tomorrow.
First thing I do is flash ICS after rooting etc...been running it on my nexus s since December and its beautiful.
Just got it on my transformer last week as well and its equally as good.
Any of you guys used midnote 2.0? I seen some vids on YouTube. It seems quite stable.
Any opinions in comparison to other ICS roms out?

I think its the criskelo ics v2 its very smooth without much fc! And telephoning and smsing work!
I have been using Midnote and I love it. I flashed all of the other ICS and they had too much battery drain for my tastes.
Midnote is perfect imo. It flashed perfectly, everything worked from the very start. The battery is amazing. Heavy usage and i charge only overnight. I wiped everything during each part of the process of flashing AND wiped after i let it boot the first time. No sod.no freezing.no nothing but smoothness. It is perfect to me.

+ 1
Though I have had the odd freeze which lasts about 15 seconds then all works well again. Maybe once a day.
Ummm...
I'm using Midnote for 4 or 5 days
working good, charging it overnight, very view FC's.
Check the time on battery (attached)
* "Viber" doesn't work on it (free calls application), other than this everything is perfect
Also using Midnote and it's working fine. My SMS notifications sound sometimes doesn't work but other than that no complaints. Battery life is amazing and I haven't had any major problems. I had Rocket Rom 1.5 on it but that was giving me a lot of issues. To each his own I suppose might try out some other ones as well still praying that ICS comes out soon
I've had my SGS for almost 2 years now, I had a gingerbread rom on it, that was working great, then started getting buggy on me. Even after starting from scratch and putting the rom on it, I was still having the same issues.
Last night I decided to put the teamhacksungs ICS port on it. I had issues with the bugs in CM7, which was actually the reason why i used gingerbread (Superclean milestone).
I was a little worried that those issues i had were not fixed, but i have to say.
ICS runs awesome on this phone, I haven't even come across any bugs yet.
I'm very happy with it. For any of you that have a SGS and are reluctant to go to ICS, do it. Its very snappy, and a lot of cool new features.
Don't get me wrong... I think I might still get the SGS III when that comes out for verizon anyway, but at least i'm not ripping my hair out when i use my currrent SGS.
since I put on my SGS ICS seem to have a new device
I tried for a couple of days using ICS....it was 4.0.1 if I recall but I didn't like it. Not stable, bugs, etc. Now I am using Dmore ... very nice looking (ICS themes and icons)and fast battery ok, still no bugs after 2 weeks of using.
Yup. On my current Vibrant phone: I'm using AOKP and it does everything I need it to do plus voodoo. Except GPS of course.
Try rem ics ux it is a very stable awesome ROM! If you undervolt it you can expect as good as or maybe a little better battery life than gingerbread with a sgs 3 theme

I just put serendipity 6 on my buddys captivate. I don't know anything about the development for this phone so I kinda had to wing it to pick which rom to put on. He was on eclair . He loves it the new.but my question is, any reason to put serendipity 7 on it instead or any other ROM for that matter? I want to give him the best stability and battery with customization. Any help is.appreciated
I do have to say this was a fun phone to mess around with for the first time

Sorry, there is no quick answer. ROM selection is a personal preference thing.
However there is a thread on xda comparing roms battery performance. If I remember correctly serendipity was among the top. Fasty was up there too.
I'll look for the link when I get home and edit my post.
Thanks for the reply. I just want to leave him with something that it's stable and if serendipity I'd up there.my job is done.thanks man

I found the thread I had mentioned, but it's old. It has been almost a year since there were any constructive posts. It was full of squabbling, so I won't bring it back to life by posting a link to it. Too bad though, cause the guy who started it had good intentions.
Probably best to let this thread die also. Battery / performance comparison threads seem to get ugly after a while.

this phone is almost three + years old. so many ppl have moved to newer versions. those who still has this phone are moved on to ICS (Ice cream Sand-witch (4.0.4) based ROMs. ICS is fast, stable and good on battery as well.
that's why there is no action on GB based ROMS.
I am on Slim ICS and highly recommend it.
until they get the encryption unsuccessful bug worked out that is a pretty good reason to recommend staying with the gingerbread roms
i suggest you go with gingerbread because it was tested that it has a better battery performance plus the graphics drivers upgraded.
Legend 4 is the most active GB ROM with current and helpful developers still active. I run it with no problems.

I'll second that!
I'm thinking about getting this ROM. It's kind of overwhelming considering there seem to be SOO many JB Roms. But are there any that work 100%? They don't outright say in the OPs what works/doesn't work.
100% of what? jb is still evolving, as there is now a second edition/version of jellybean.
my oinion: If you want a good reliable jb rom, then try cm10.0 stable. it is android 4.1.2 and totally good for day to day use.
If you want the later, jb 4.2.1, you can try cm10.1 monthly or nightly build. it is mostly stable.
Well, the AOSP one (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2013285) is considered the purest JB, but I don't think you'll get any dev to claim that his or her ROM is 100% working. It's intrinsic to the development of ROMs. Developer creates a ROM, tests it as best he can, posts it, users find issues, developer(s) fix issues, test again, post again etc. etc. It is really advisable to read around in the respective threads to see which issues have been found and delt with. I think that all current JB ROMs will cover basic functionality an average user would want, together with a zillion tweaks to stretch the hardware to the limit, be it good battery life, 3d gaming and other features devs and users come up with.
so I say: read around and try some of the different flavours, stick with the one that you prefer..
Works great.

It is as Perfect as stable, Get CM10.1 Nightly 20130208 with gapps 121212, And really Its awesome..
So far Sephi's ROM is the one I keep going back to. I was on Aosp by Ace of spades but that project is no longer being updated. It still runs really well but I'm a flasher.

I have used CM7, CM9 and CM10 on the captivate and all worked well, but recently switched to SlimBean 4.2.1 and it is much smoother. With CM10 my battery drained quicker and the phone was often warm when used for a long period(playing games, etc), but I don't have this problem with Slim
