Well, I have an ATT 8.9 LTE (SGH-i957) that I flashed with the rooted ROM using Odin.
All seemed OK..UNTiL the auto restart at which point the gTab powered down, showed the "Samsung" name/logo for about a second...and then just went a "glowing" black.
I can still get to download mode, and subsequently have reflashed with the ATT stock ROM from samfirmware.com. Same result. No obvious problems during flash...but no boot up after a brief presentation of the Samsung logo.
Any ideas??
Thanks....p
Get into recovery mode to delete cache and factory reset.
The "stock" ROM that's floating around is a "no-wipe" version.
I didn't know that was a no wipe version. Good to know.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
I appreciate the advise.
However, unfortunately the tablet will only go into download mode....no recovery mode regardless of the combination of "power" and "volume up"...or "power" and "volume down"...or "power" and BOTH volume up AND down.
Any other way to clear cache/etc??
p
If you can get it into download mode, plug it into your PC and try using ADB (assuming you've installed the Android SDK).
Code:
ADB Reboot Recovery
Also, when you say you flashed "root ROM", what file did you use? The Da_G root for the i957, or something else?
Yes...the Da_G is the root file that I flashed.
Well, despite the fact that Odin "sees" the device...I get "device not found" with adb?!
Thanks for the continuing help!
have you ever had the device recognized in ADB before?
You can also flash the custom recovery via odin and see if they key combo works with that.
When you flash via odin, you are using the PDA slot, correct?
Hi....
I only had the tab about 10 minutes before I soft bricked it....so I had not tried with adb before.
Yes...flashed with file in PDA and all default Odin option per instructions.
I'm not sure about the "custom recovery" that you suggest I flash?! Can you point me to it?
Thanks much.
Oh...realize on there is no CWM for the 8.9 LTE.
Is that the "custom recovery" to which you referred??
Thanks
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1462770
That is the custom recovery for the LTE
I am still surprised you cant get into recovery through a key combo.
I am also surprised you are having this issue in the first place. Just flashing that root kernel shouldn't cause it not to boot.
I know...just lucky I guess
Well, I successfully flashed that recover....no changes.
Still can only boot into download mode.
When I try the key combo for recovery, I DO feel the tablet HD moving...but won't boot.
Very disappointing.
Do you know of any un-brick service that works with the 8.9???
Thanks...p
Adb is really your best bet here. Do you have an Android phone you can detect with adb?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
Yes...I can detect my phone (with USB debug set, of course).
Given I can't SET the usb mode on the tablet....I am not optimistic about adb detecting it.
Woe is me, I'm afraid!
Try flashing this kernel in odin.
http://ponack.net/TPC/dagnarf/stock-kernel-odin-image-for-sgh-i957.tar
I'm trying to think of anything you can do. When you try volume up + power, keep holding the volume up, but let go of power as soon as you feel the device vibrate after being off.
Man...frustrating....
Same results.
eeeeeesh
I'll keep thinking

So....no "unbricker" come to mind to which I might have to resort?

You could try reflashing KJ7 again, and checking "Phone Bootloader Update" this time.
Interesting...
What is the "KJ7" to which you refer?

I'll preface this thread by saying that I've look all over to help me remedy my problem, but I have not found anything that has resolved my issue. I've tried all the combinations of the the manual buttons to bootloader mode and download mode, and it will not work as my firmware is not the current Bell hardware burron fix (I have the old JH2 firmware, w/o the updated SPL)
What prompted this is that I was trying to reinstall the default android clock app that I deleted on accident. I had downloaded some default apps that were pulled from the Samsung Epic 4G (can't post URLs properly due to my user limitations, thread here: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773142) thinking that the apks in there are the same. I tried installing but that failed. That should have been a red flag, but I wanted to have the clock app back. So what I did next is what I regret. I copied and pasted the AlarmClock.apk and AlarmClock.odex to the systems\app folder using Root Explorer. It wasn't until I rebooted my phone that this problem occurred.
I know that my phone isn't completely bricked as I can still see the battery icon when I plug it in to charge...and the phone does load the start up screen, but it won't get past that and will black out and the capacitive LED buttons (menu and back) will stay lit.
I've been diligent in backing up my information on my home computer (I'm at work now), so data loss is no problem for me. What I would really want is to fix this. My last resort is to return tot the store and get an exchange, which I really don't want to do.
Help is greatly appreciated.
you cannot install/copy (which have .odex file) apps from other firmware versions becuase the .odex is encrypted for a particular version.. if you pasted to system/app and it is a critical app from wrong version you will hang/freeze phone.. try to get into download mode and reflash the firmware..
Do you have access to the phone over adb?

I've read about the ADB Reboot Recovery, but it mentions that my phone has to be on USB debugging mode to work, which I believe is not on =/
Is there a link where I can download to try anyways? I've searched fro it, but I'm not sure if what i searched is the right thing.
I cannot get the download mode to work as the combinations I've been using do not even register...the phone just keeps looping the Samsung Galaxy i9000M screen when I hold the buttons...like it's in perpetual reboot mode. Like I stated earlier, the hardware buttons do not seem to work. I have the old JH2 firmware that was updated from Keis that does not have the hardware button fix.

this should work if you take battery out hold down all three buttons and when you first see logo release power button for 1 sec. then repress.
also try it with and without usb plugged in.
For adb u need the android software development kit (sdk). Its available at developers.android.com. Simply run sdksetup and choose sdk tools.

I gave adb (great tool btw) a try, got it to run in command prompt, but I get an error saying device not found. Unfortunately, I did not have USB debugging mode on prior to my phone's screen blacking out on me. I should mention that I have a Bell Mobility Galaxy S I9000M, and hardware button attempts for any mode (volume up and/or down + home + power on, in a multitude of combinations, e.g. USB connected/disconnected) , be it recovery or download, have been futile as that method is not in the firmware I have one my phone. I'll have to use my last resort and get an exchange for the phone at the store I got it from. With any luck, hopefully someone who works there will have the magic touch and revive my phone. *crosses fingers*
Thanks for all the helpful suggestions. I'll keep them in mind to not let this happen again. Thank goodness for my constant backups instilled in me during my Windows Mobile days.
When the phone is ON firmly press volume up + home + power. It will reboot. Keep holding them! Wait a half a second after the gti9000 logo appears then let go of the power button. Keep holding volume up and home! This should boot you into recovery. Try it a few times. I found it is all in the timing of letting go of the power button.
Hope this helps!

Also, I had an i9000 in your state and even after I had it previously working with Android SDK and the Samsung USB driver (essential in Windows but not included the SDK) but after I messed up the ROM (trying to lagfix it) it stopped responding to adb commands on either OSX or Windows. Boot recovery from the aforementioned hotkey combination seemed to be the only way to fix it. But I am a n00b. I'm only passing on what I experienced.

Had a similar problem after flashing a new rom, managed to egt past it by reflashing using Odin.
One of my friends has just given me his i9000 in the same state to see if I can fix it, he has been quoted $300NZ to repair!
He says he did it trying to flash a rom after successful root.
I get the galaxy splash screen but no matter how i hold and release the aforementioned keys I just dont get anything all.
ADB returns no device found and not seen by ODIN.
Tried many battery pulls, reboot + three keys and releasing/releasing-reapplying power button at various times during the splash screen. And with/without USB connected.
Pretty sure the device did have USB debugging enabled before this.
I am watching this thread closely, if I fix it I get a box of beer!
when i plugged my phone into kies it offered me an update from 2.2 to 2.2.1 (PDA:JS5 / PHONE:JPY / CSC: JS4). i have rooted my phone before the update using Z4root and also installed voodoo lagfix using a one click installer which was on the market. after the update the phone went into recovery mode and on kies it said something like "disconnect and reconnect usb". i didnt do this and just clicked the reboot now option on recovery mode. and now my phone boots up but the OS does not start. the tmobile boot animation is no longer played, instead it is the (i am guessing) original galaxy s boot animation. after this animation the phone vibrates once, pauses and the vibrates 3 times. if i leave it on then it will do this continously. it used to do this while the phone worked on 2.2 and it ended up force closing whatever app i was using at that time. is it force closing the OS? i can no longer get into 3 button recovery mode even though i could before. i am going to try the ADK which i am new too and if it works and i get into recovery mode what should i do? factory reset? and if doesnt how can i get it to recovery mode?
i really want to get it working again thank you in advance to everyone.
UPDATE: i have tried the adk reboot recovery but it says device not found :S

Your woes are probably because you didn't disable lagfix.
But don't worry - JS5 does not disable the 3-button modes or anything. Maybe you are just releasing the buttons at a wrong time (too early / too late)? See if you can get to download mode (Vol Dn - Power - Home). If yes, you can flash JS5 (or any other stock firmware) via Odin.
Try download mode never make customication without haveing them working!
If 3btn doesn't work built a jig then flash a FULL rom(3files +pit) using odin +repartition
Or if you want it super easy just flash darky resurrection (one file+ good rom)

So let me summarize what i have done so far. I have a samsung captivate. THe power button has stopped functioning and am out of warranty and stuff. Last week I thought I would root my phone and flash a Rom. But unfortunately I needed the power button to navigate through the recovery menu. So I looked at a lot of forums for ways around it, but nothing worked. I tried cwm too but that dint work either. Eventually I reset my phones to factory setting and formatted everything. But sadly, not my phone keeps restarting every 5 seconds or so unless its plugged in a charger. I tried resetting multiple times and tried looking online for solutions, but nothing seems to work. Any help would be highly appreciated it. And on a side note, will it be possible to flash a custom Rom with my power button not working?
Thanks a lot in advance

Buy or make yourself a jig - that will get you into download mode, and you can flash a kernel with CWM baked in. You can get to recovery mode via ADB if you need to (command is ADB REBOOT RECOVERY), and once you're there, quite a few of the versions of CWM will allow up/down with the menu/home keys and selection with the search key.
As for your power button, if you haven't tried cleaning it, look around the forum - there are some options for trying to get it cleaned and working that way first. If that doesn't do it, the member connexion2005 (Josh at mobiletechvideos.com) offers a power button replacement service (as far as I know) for a nominal fee.
Thanks a lot for the quick reply. I think I will just get a jig, its much easier. So if I get the phone in download mode, I can flash any Rom I want?
Uhhh nope...

I had one more quick question. I finally figured out how to use adb. So when i try to go into the bootloader using adb bootloader. My phone just restarts. Also when i tried going into adb shell it said system/bin/sh not found. So i went into my root explrorer and checked out system/bin. The sh and bootloader files were not there. I am not sure if they are supposed to be there or not. If they are missing. How do I get them back?
Here is what i was doing
adb reboot bootloader - phone restarts
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img to flash a custom recovery-the cmd promt jus says waiting for device and doesnt do anything
PS: Is there any way to control the recovery menu using adb/cmd promt?
Thanks a lot guys for helping me out. I really appreciate it.
Thanks
Sounds like you killed your system partition with the reformat. Try putting it into download mode and then using a one-click Odin package to flash your phone back to life. You're going to have an issue with flashing things through CWM without a power button.

Thank you so much for your help. I was finally able to flash my phone back to stock Froyo. I realized that I can put my phone
in download mode and flash a rom using odin. My last question is that is there a rom for ICS that I can flash using odin.
I tried googling and searching xda for "flash ics captivate odin" but could not find anything. So do u guys know any Rom that I can flash using odin. All the ones that i found were zip files which does not work for odin.
I am looking for some serious help, I rooted my Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 4G LTE (SGH-i957) through the instructions that I found on this site by first installing Clockworkmode Recovery and then installing Jelly Bean 4.1.1 using Odin. Everything seemed to work fine with this, but then I decided to go one step further and load a over clocking kernel via Odin to increase my Processing speed. This process went fine through Odin and then after the auto reboot it all fell apart... the tablet will now only periodically display the first and second samsung logos and then just go blank or will display the battery icon with power off and plugged into the PC. Either way I have been unable to access the Boot screen or the Download screen...
IS THERE A FIX TO THIS? or am I just finished?
I have tried the "One Click Unbrick" program with no results and Odin intermittently recognizes the device is connected to the PC as the Tablet cycles through what appears to be an 1 second long boot up attempt.
Looking for someones brilliant idea haha...
Any and all help is greatly appreciated!!
Wrong section, but here goes. I'm no expert but Samsung devices are notoriously hard to eff up beyond fixing.
Can you get back into your recovery? I would do that, do all your normal wipes and reinstall a rom with its stock kernel.
If that doesn't work well then, I'd say Odin back to stock. If it's just a soft brick fixing it shouldn't be a problem.
Of course someone else who knows what they are doing could chime in here lol.

Do you have any suggestions on how to re-access the download mode in my current situation. Thank you for you suggestions thus far!
If you have a complete TWRP backup from before you flashed the OC kernel, just reboot into recovery and restore boot. That'll replace the HC kernel with what you were running before. That'll save you the effort of going through the entire process again to get back to JB.

Thank you for your response, so far Odin only picks up the device for a second before it disappears again and keeps repeating the cycle over and over agian. It is as if the Tablet keeps attempting a reboot cycle but fails to initialize the booting process? I don't know if I am making any sense to all of you that are much smarter than I at the stuff.
I am trying to time the start of Odin to the point that when it connects to the device that it is also recognizing the device at the same time... Kinda poking in the dark here as I am out of solutions...
The tablet attempts a reboot every 45 SECS and it recognized for only 3 SECS... Thoughts??
You need to get it to stop rebooting and into download or recovery mode. Try every button combo possible. If you hold power down for ten seconds it should shut off

Hold down the volume button near the power button as it boots to get into download mode... the other volume button will take you to recovery.

I have tried every key combination possible with no results the only thing the tablet does is do a quick single vibrate just like it does when you power it on and it boots up just without the actual booting process... and when the tablet is plugged into the PC it displays the battery symbol with the star bright icon over it like its thinking about charging but to my knowledge does nothing beyond that as far as charging is concerned. But it does do the single vibrate once every 45 secs as if it was booting up and is recognized on the PC through Odin for only 3 secs... not sure where to go from here now??
Hold the volume buttons down don't just press them. Also try button combos but instead of hitting power plug your charger in and out to get it to reboot.

Hello XDA peeps,
So here is my situation, some days ago (like 3-4 months ago) I installed CM 10.1 on my Captivate. Everything went well and I can even open my phone and use it. But the problem was, after installing that ROM, I no longer can get into recovery mode or download mode. I tried everything possible, the button combo method, button combo and battery pull in method, button combo and USB pull in method and also tried ADB "restart recovery / reboot download" I think, (does not remember because it was 3-4 months ago). Tried everything correctly and stopped trying when I could not get into download mode or recovery mode. The last option I have is a USB jig, but the thing is I don't have it and I will need to buy it from abroad if I want it.
Some more information: When I try to put it in download mode, it gets in a boot loop (I see the AT&T logo and then reboots), the boot loop stops when I leave the buttons. And also when I switch on the phone, it does display the battery charging animation.
And also I've heard some people saying that it might be because I flashed some incompatible kernal or something. (This might be true, because I also don't remember what I did to flash the ROM )
So, I want to fix this now because I want to update my phone to the CyanFox 4.3 ROM which seems very cool . Is there anyway I can fix this recovery mode or download mode on this phone so that I could flash a new ROM to my phone (without the jig if possible)
Thank you lots peeps.

Download and recovery mode aren't affected by ROM flashing. If you can run your phone just fine, then your kernel is fine.
Now my guess is that one of your button isn't working properly, or that you're using the wrong combo. That being said, when you hold the power button (while phone is powered on), you should have an extended menu that gives you the option of booting in recovery or download mode, have you tried those?
As for a jig, you can make one if you don't wanna order one. It's fairly simple and we have a guide in here on how to for just a couple bucks.

Thank you for your reply. Yes I did try that also. But it just does a normal restart. I tried the the ADB "reboot recovery" also. It also didn't help. I even downloaded an app to reboot into recovery, but no help.
And yesterday I got a jig from my friend, it worked on his infuse but did not work on my Captivate. He said that it might be because he is using a 330K resistor. So I ordered a jig from ebay. It will take some time to reach here.
Is there anything else I can try? maybe push a recovery or something using ADB? Sorry if I am being noob here
Once again, thanks for your support.
At this point i would just wait for the jig. And yes, Samsung galaxy jig requires 301k.

Ok, I will wait for the jig and when I get it, I will post the result.
Once again Thank you for your help
Aaaand all of a sudden I was wondering, can this be a bootloader problem? Maybe my bootloader got locked somehow or something?
The best thing is still to wait for the Jig or make one, as BWolf56 suggested.
Once ya have the Jig and If u can get into Download Mode with it, I suggest that u flash the One Click Odin or Heimdall Stock Android 2.3.5 i897uckk4 that includes the Bootloaders. (See the stickied One Click thread in the Dev forum, Post #3). If that is successful, do not flash any Bootloaders again. U can then proceed to flash the KK4 Corn Kernel, the .tar version of the kernel v7.0A, through Odin and then use that CWM Recovery that is baked into that kernel to go on flashin other Roms, etc.
If u cannot get into Download Mode with the Jig, then ur micro usb port of ur phone may be the fault. (But still an app should work from the play store to reboot to download or recovery)...anyway that is all i got for now.
Keep us posted.
