1) you need Root and modified recovery to put a custom ROM.
2) the one that you prefer. I use Emanon V4 but Cyanogen is great too.
3) Yes if you do something wrong...
4) nearly impossible... but never say never
5) That I don't know
good luck

Hello,
I have a Galaxy S and I was just wondering, is there much point updating to a custom ROM as it's on the latest firmware from OTA (2.2) & if so what's the best custom rom available at the moment?
cheers,
Kevin.
Hi...
Im new in the SGS rooting too, but I guess my answer goes for any brand of mobile, when regarding to running a custom ROM.
With a custom ROM you get a "cleaner" ROM. you can choose which one suites you best, and often, the ROM is deoxed e.g. and is running much smother, than any stock ROM.
Regarding my choice, Im going for Darky's ROM.
I often look at which ROM people use the most, but also, if its build on stoc ROM og stock android ROM. If it is stock android ROM and you are planning on using a custom UI (ADW launcher e.g.) hte phone wont take up place with Touch Wiz UI
okay, so I've decided to use Darky's ROM - but on the tutorial it says to install Recovery2e (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108) I downloaded it and extracted it but it's a zImage file as opposed to a .tar file
Hi guys restored my phone and realized that themes are rom specific. Soooo i know i dont have any custom rom on my phone, but i know i backup and am running my stock rom that came with the fascinate (im guessing touchwiz). My question is are there any themes that work on this rom,so i dont end up installing a custom rom for it. Also can you please link a guide to install custom rom with CWM for this phone? Thanks
Hi,
Just got my beautiful Note, installed Root and CWM using this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
One thing is not totally clear in my head and I would you to clarify it because I don't want to make a mistake.
According to the rooting topic, I have a KKA kernel on my Note.
If I want to install a custom ROM, should I install a KKA ROM or can I install any custom ROM I want? For example XXLA6 or LA1 or anything else in ROM titles, so I'm not sure I can take any of these ROMs.
If anybody could guide me, it would be great.
Thanks for your help.

you can install whatever rom you want, because most (if not all) custom roms bring their "own" kernel with them (whatever kernel the dev choose for his build)!

Hi guys, i have looked but cant find.
what i want do try and achieve is to pull the rom from my ace with all installed apps/settings that i have installed.
basicly i have AOSP Beta 1 over XWKS2 stock,
launcherpro
cyanogenmod setings
cm7.x gps patch
i have a backup made via cwm5 but this is just a retore folder.
i would like to create a fully flashable rom of my current rom/settings/patches.that can be used via Odin.
the purpose of this is so i can have my rom backed up and flashable, just like a stock rom, and so i can try other roms without having to flash back to stock then flash AOSP and then flash patches and cyanogenmod setting, wich is a bit of a nightmare "trying new roms on daily basis and having to flash back due to bugs or poor performance"
if someone can help me create a flashable backup in a noob friendly way i would be very greatfull.
i love my ace as it is at the moment, its perfect for me. it would just be nice if i could flash back to my custom rom in 1 flash rather than many + having to add all patches after,
this would be amazing if anyone can help.
Yes I'm still interesting to do that also from my S5830i
Odin is only for stock roms. You cant flash custom roms using Odin.

You have posted in the Wrong Section. Questions go in the Q & A Section. Read the Sections before you post or just understand it, buddy. Answering your question, first root your Phone. Second, flash CWM Recovery. This will allow you to install ROM's. Third, choose the ROM of your choice. It can be any Versions starting from 2.2 to 4.4(CM 9 to CM11). CM7 is the best and lag free for our Phones with Good Battery Backup when compared to CM9 & CM10
I guess u can easily to install custom rom, no need to update your software...
