Hello everyone,
I have some questions about my current setup for the Galaxy Note. First of all, I have the stock firmware installed with Android 2.3.6 (if I'm correct that that;'s the latest version). Together with the latest AbyssNote 3.5 as my kernel.
I have updated the kernel with the Mobile ODIN app, since I have a MacBook and no Windows installation... Anyways, my questions are this:
1) Will I be able to update to ICS as soon as it gets released by Samsung with the current custom kernel, or do I have to flash it back yo stock by then? And if so, how?
2) When updating to a custom rom, for example, RocketROM inside Mobile ODIN, will I lose all my data/apps and such? Or will it be as a upgrade so I don't have to reinstall anything?
3) When ICS would come out and I would have a custom rom + kernel, how do I proceed further? Do I need to wait for a custom ICS version to update to? Or do I have to revert everything to stock and such before I could update to the stock ICS?
$) And at last, when I would decide to flash my Note back to stock from a custom ROM/kernel, how do I do this without losing all my data/apps?
Thanks for your answers!
Regards,
berserkrico

I recently upgraded my Note to official ICS (OTA) and I'm not liking it AT ALL! Now I really want to get far away from this update as possible and I'd like to switch to a CM9 nightly Rom. I've that now that I have upgraded to the official ICS Rom, I run the risk of super bricking my device. So now I ask you to help me make sure the following is correct so that I may move on from this wretched update:
DO NOT perform wipes if you are on original Samsung ICS
DO NOT perform wipes if you are on a original Samsung kernel??
Flash back to original Gingerbread Rom using odin BEFORE flashing to CM9
Flash to different kernel??
I've flashed millions of Roms but this one is scary and I just want to make sure haven't missed anything... Have I?
Thanks for you help!!

Just flash a stock directly rootable GB rom, root and put CM9 on it. Then do a factory reset and you're good to go. Went that way few times already.

So is the super-brick BUG on the official ICS OTA?? OMG
And yeah go back to gingerbrear via odin, get root then flash any CM9 tru CWM no problems...
I'd like to do something similar to what the OP wants to do however I have rooted and installed CWM on an official/stock ICS rom. So if I wanted to flash back to a stock gingerbread rom would I need to remove CWM and/or un-root?

There is no need to unroot first. You can flash stock GB rom directly via Odin.
I've now flashed to GB but before I move on to a CM9 nightly, do you recommend I flash the CM9 kernel as well? Seems like it is not a prerequisite but I would like to make sure. Thanks.
John J
afaik, when flashing a CM9 Nightly, the eligible kernel is built in, so no need to flash anything but the ROM.
i'm on one of imilkas first CM9 port and it says [email protected] #1 under Kernel version in settings.
Yes. The correct kernel is included in the nightly.
Hi,
well ICS has finally landed in my corner of the globe.
Unfortunately, the Samsung idiots have decided to roll it out even if it still bricks phones, sometimes even at startup...
So, my phone hasn't yet heard Samsung's call for an upgrade and I'd prefer not to do anything stupid.
Formerly, I was on a GB rooted rom that I updated to the last GB (unroot, then update via KIES).
The fact is, I want to know if there is any possibility for me to flash to an ICS rom directly ?
So far I understood that I can possibly make it even with an unrootable GB thanks to Odin. But I'd prefer not to mess up with my precious...
Thanks in advance for you help.
You have to go back to a rooted GB...i prefer KL3 and only then flash the custom ICS roms..its the safest method...you can know more in the videos. ..links are in ky sig.
Yes you can flash directly with odin
Here is thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
You may find installation and rooting guide link at starting of ICS listing.
Just to add, if you want best performance then take backup(there is limited scope on non rooted) and wipe cache and wipe data from recovery before flashing ICS.
Edit : oh sorry just i read header you need custom ics, i wrote above is for stock ics.
Thanks a lot for your quick answers!
Actually I wanted to switch directly to RocketRom, but it seems that I need first to have a stock rooted phone. :/
So if I get it well:
If unrootable GB ROM:
1/ Flash to stock ICS using Odin
2/ Flash safe custom kernel such as speedmod
My question there is, can I do both at once using Odin?
1/ Flash to stock ICS using Odin
(Still with the french one? It's deemed as being unsafe, any particular recommendation?)
2/ Root the phone with the third post on dr.ketan's amazing thread
3/ Flash to safe custom kernel such as speedmod using CWM
Right?
So if I understand well, the issue is because of the "erase rom" method present on ICS stock kernel is not supported properly by the faulty emmcs ?
So unless on a "safe" kernel: No wipe/full wipe/reset. right?
Sorry for my messy post...
I know most / all ROM's provide info on how to install etc.
My query is -
Are ICS based Custom ROM's flashable via CWM on a rooted GB ROM? Or do i need to upgrade to ICS again, Apply CF-ROOT (Or use Abyss) and install from there.
Given I have rooted GB with SpeedMod Kernel, In the even I need to upgrade to ICS to root etc - Is it as simple as just applying ICS via OTA / Or that god awful KIES Software... Or has it gotta be done in ODIN..
Sure hope they sort this big out soon..
Any help / advice is appreciated as always..
Oh no its you again
It depends on the ROM in question, If you want to upgrade to say, Paranoid Android, Or any CM / AOSP / AOKP ROM,Then you upgrade from GB, Just flash the ROM in CWM.
However, if you want to use a Samsung based ICS ROM, Such as Rocket ROM, you will need to flash ICS via ODIN. Like what we did last night
but you will lose root if you use ODIN, But there are many ways to get that back, Such as flashing a rooted kernel, Like speedmod.
Dont use OTA updates on a custom ROM, You will need stock kernel too i believe, You will also lose root when using OTA.
Hope this helps
Oh yes, I am back
Cheers - I gain confidence with each passing minute.. I think I'll probably mess around with PA - but CleaNote OP advised possible to flash over GB Rooted - we'll see haha
PA is awesome, Wait till you see it, I dont think you'll be wanting to try anything else.
EDIT: CleaNote requires you to flash ICS before installation, Not GB
Hi Guys
Sorry if this question has been answered before, but i did try and look for an answer but had no luck. Unfortunely I do have abit of a strange situation.
I updated to an offical Australian vodafone (my provider) ICS rom (GT-N7000B version) through mobile odin a while back from a XSA (AUS) GT-N7000 GB rom. Since i used mobile odin i was able to pass root through to the new rom which was great.
Since the release of JB has come out I am wondering since I know about the brickbug etc, how will I update my phone to JB since i am on a stock ICS kernel? As it was to my understanding I cannot flash anything on a stock ICS kernel due to the flash bug?
Can i actually use pc odin on a stock ICS kernel and flash over the top to JB or will I have to re-flash GB or ICS GT-N7000 model rom and then use a safe kernel to flash to get clockwork mod and then go over that to get to JB?
Any advice?
If you want just stock, i.e. no root or anything, just go back to gb and flash official JB through PC Odin.
Alternatively, you could also straightaway flash official JB through PC Odin.(Not recommended)
Hi
The wife's Note is presently on stock rooted ICS running a custom kernel (can't remember which one of the top of my head). I want to update it to JB, but want to go down the path of least resistance (i.e. avoiding having to reinstall all the apps, etc).
I guess the first question is, can I update via OTA or KIES?
I presume if I update via OTA or KIES (I have an updated rom notification on OTA) I will loose root (even if I use OTA Rootkeeper?) and the custom kernel (reverting back to stock kernel).
FYI - not really fussed about re-rooting as wife doesn't really need to seem to need a rooted phone.
Thanks in advance!
If rooted with a custom kernel the OTA updates won't work.
Make a complete backup in recovery of the note
and
download one of the no-wipe, rooted Custom Roms and install it.
Thanks. I think I may do a total unrooted of stock JB.

Not really necessary. I repeat. Make a backup and use a no-wipe JB Custom Rom (like my own) and try with this.
Hi
Just a quick follow up, can I flash stock JB via Odin rather than Kies and avoid a wipe?
Thinking Odin, as am having problems with Kies recognising the phone (MTP error).
Flash the JB with PC Odin.
