I'm a bit annoyed by the lag ever since I compared it with the S2. Is it the higher resolution that's the problem?
Are there any ways to remove the lag? Custom rom? Overclocking?

I guess any custom rom is better than stock. Have tried rocketrom and checkrom so far, and they are both a flight to remember. We Swedes don't seem to get very rescent uppdates through Kies or OTA updater either. Im guessing checkrom is the best way to go right now, but thats mainly because it seems to me that 4 persons are developing that and rocketrom is being developed by one person. May be wrong but that my impression. Checkroms hardware accelerated UI and browser are a real treat as well.
If you wish to overclock then just get the XDA-member-free version of set-cpu and use it with a custom ROM of choise, but you won't need to in order to get rid of the lag. It will be quite gone anyway.

Robbie's DarkyRom is the way to go in my opinion. Well worth a try.
when saying hardware accelerated UI, it only applies to TW, right, and not 3rd party launchers? ADW, specifically.
Is there a custom rom that has no issues?

If you haven't already check out the latest stock ROM LA4. That is the fastest of the stock ROMS. If that doesn't solve it you can try out custom ROMS. I like Cassie's Lite ROM v6. It is very close to stock but with performance tweaks and most junk removed. After A LOT of testing I found it runs the best with FM 2.0 kernel. Hope this helps.

Well, I've tried to get the latest stock rom but I'm not sure what I'm doing. I have been flashing roms since forever (Windows Mobile and Galaxy S) but I have obviously forgotten everything.
Right now I'm rooted on KK4 and I've bought Odin Mobile Pro. Not sure I really need OMP, but oh well.
Can I use N7000XXLA4 Germany from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997 even though I have a swedish phone? I've read somewhere that swedish is included in the german version IIRC.
And I just need to follow the steps starting with 1.Easy way is Mobie Odin Pro.?
Flash a better stock rom, or wait for ICS with root?
Someone tell me how long until a good version of ICS comes.

Actually, I recommend staying away from Odin.
Read this article it should help a lot.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331784
I'm using KK4 stock ROM from Hong Kong. No lag whatsoever. My Note really flies now.
I have rooted using Chainfire's method using the exploit mentioned in the above quoted article (without using Odin). Then used Titanium Backup Pro to freeze all stock apps that are memory hogs in Touchwiz, e.g. Media Hub, Social Hub, etc.
Then also used Rom Toolbox to change the SD boost settings (in performance) to 2048kb. I still use the SGN in power saving mode and have Juice Defender Ultimate set to "balanced" to extend battery, nevertheless my SGN is fast, smooth and has no lag at all.

You are wrong.. Using odin for flashing stock firmwares doesnt increase ur binary counter.. Just dont flash custom roms using odin... My suggestion is to use latest firmwares like kla4 or kla6 to reduce lag.. And yes you can use mobile odin for flashing them.. Binary counter wont get increased as it is stock.. But mind you, the latest firmwares cannot be rooted directly.. So you will lose rooting benefits.. So if u want a rooted latest kla4 or kla6,flash a custom rom using it using cwm recovery not odin.. I m using rocket v21 wid abyss 3.5 now
I'm using stock firmware/rom and getting no lag.
The only slight delay I ever get is the wakeup time or when opening sms messages/contacts, it may take several seconds to open.
As for menus/apps it is silky smooth for me thanks to a custom launcher & spareparts+

But OMP has an option like "root on flash". I thought that would root the new rom when flashing?
Now I have CF-Root 5.0 kernel and CWM Manager 3.0 installed.
Is it possible to flash LA4 (from the link I wrote in OP) and still keep root, kernel and CWM Manager? How?

Already flashed LA4 through CWM, worked great. No difference in lag though...
Can I flash N7000XXLA6 (Russia) and still keep the current language (swedish)?
Yeah you can flash, but there is not much difference between LA4 and LA6 except the Russian language i guess. The Lag free update LA4.
Ok, I'll skip LA6 then. I did notice a difference in the browser, it seems there's no horizontal scroll lock when scrolling vertical. I dont think it was like that before?
I dont like the feeling of it, hope they will change it back...

Hello Mods n Modders,
This is my 1st post and thanks to Admin for launching this website...
My SGS i9000 is currently on stock v2.3.4 JVR (rooted by flashing 'semaphore' kernel) and now I want to downgrade the current JVR to JVQ, in other words, I want to flash Darky's v2.2.2 ROM(w/o touchwiz), which is more stable I guess
So, is it possible to downgrade from JVR to JVQ without bricking my new Galaxy S??
Also answer.. is Darky's latest JVQ really stable than stock JVR (in terms of battery, speed and least buggs)??
Please help...
p.s: I can't post this question in Developer's section due to very less quantity of post
Yes u can downgrade by flashing JVQ from odin and download firmware from www.samfirmware.com
Sent From Galaxy S....using XDA App.
Creator Of Doctorz Rom.
I can't say that Darky's ROM is more stable, but it is faster, and obviously provides more functionality than the stock ROM.
If you're really set on speed, try Faryaab's F1 SGS2 ROM v6.
This is by far the fastest ROM I've tested, with all the stableness of most.
I've even tested the v7 released this week, but it is not nearly as fast, so I agree with the downgrading option because I've done the same.
I've tested 3 ROMs on JVS, and 3 on JVR, but this JVQ one is still my favourite.
Also note, that you can always flash the system apps you liked from the JVR version you were using previously, there should be some system apps around on here...I've flashed MMS, Camera, Email, and Phone from other ROMs I've liked.

hi ph03i!x_SA
I need a ROM to be very close to stock 2.4.3, - rooted, fast but not overclocked, and most important is the battery efficiency. Till now I have never been on Modded ROM. I liked the way you have customised SGS according to the stability and I wud really like to mod my SGS like that. I will try both of them
Custom ROMs don't always look different from stock

I think you mean 2.3.4?
You can still get the stock ROM, I think from samfirmware.com. Then, again, you can still flash custom apps, but you have to root the stock ROM.
Anything is possible, as long as someone has either released an app you like, or a version of the ROM you like.
I never thought I'd get so involved with this custom ROM stuff, I also like the stock firmware, but after I rooted, and the lag of updates from Samsung officially, the need arose. But the F1 ROM looks like the a cross between stock ROMs of SGS and SGS2, so it's still clean. None of that messy battery icons, custom notifications bar, etc. I don't like those.
Enjoy
Be careful, changing ROMs becomes addictive.

I Have Rooted my Note with Odin and are on kernel KK5.. Im thinking of install a new kernel and getting a custom rom for improve the speed, battery and hopefully no lag after reading different topics here, its pretty hard too choose? anyone know for sure whats the best out?
Look at them all, read the responses, then pick one. There is no such thing as "best".
Agreed!
Its what best suits your needs. CF-Root may be considered as the most stable and close to stock as possible with just Root.
That may be what you want to start with.
The best ones are: of your considering and best choice to fit your device
yes there is not a best rom (never ask about which is the best rom)
there are different roms
some uses some devices/cpu drivers/controllers/governors some not, some are lighter some are more heavy
some looks quite similar to stock and some others are completely different
some boost speed others boost battery usage
i think that for make a good choice 1st element is to see who made the rom: there are some devs who have been tweacking/writing roms for years on older devices and have a strong strong reputation
2nd element very important is to check the comments of the people who tried it on the threads: read 1st page of the post and then go to last page and read the 10/20 last replies
usually for noobs like you and me the best is to go for a well tested rom without 2 many problems
i wouldnt dare to install cyanogenmod 9 so far....
anyway if i were you i would try the rocket rom vers 20 and then upgrade to rocket rom 21
this rom has a long development and its quite reliable
being .21 version many bugs have been amended and the dev is very active and nice.
2 go for reliable rom as beginner is the most intelligent choice!
hope to have been helpful

Hi, my name is g4ndr1k and I'm a flash addict.
I've tried almost every ROM and now I am on DarkyROM. Hopefully it would be my last before ICS.
My other favorites are Cassie's, CheckROM, KingDroid and Romow.
For giving a precise answer (of course, only IMHO):
CheckRom v5 with either CF Root oder SpeedMod Kernel.
But, in general: use what suits your needs best. How? take a look at every ROM.
Honestly as of now the custom ROM's dont really stand out that much compared to the stock ones, on a day to day basis with a blind test no one can tell the difference.
I was looking for smoothness, stability and the minimum lag without changing a lot in UI, stock LA4 deodexed with fm 2.0 kernel was my best choice after trying several roms, I'm satisfied with what i have before the ICS comes out.

Im actually starting too wonder if id used Odin.. This is the package i used: DooMLoRD_v3_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su
but anyway, i dont think i have CWM recovery installed, i have downloaded Rom Manager, but when i push the Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. I can only choose between a few samsung choices like SII but no Galaxy Note?
Currently on rocket 21 but id highly recommend checkROM v5. Seems the most stable with superb performance and battery. Flash abyss kernel 3.5 and overclock and undervolt to 1600. Guarantee you'll love it. With checkrom you can install missing Samsung apps from kitchen and a variety of mods to suit your needs. Would recommend ics keyboard if you use fingers to type or swype if you use the pen a lot.

It seems like a question which may be answered somewhere, but while trying to research and find my way out of a bricked phone, I realized there are solutions that exist within this forum, but are not widely viewable and it helps to ask again.
I know the most popular way to root a GB ROM is to rollback to an older version and then root it. But I have bricked my phone once due to ICS and would really like to retain the stock GB configuration with my new phone. So, is there a way I can root my phone while keeping the same stock GB ROM that came installed on the phone and the modem?
Please do not suggest how easy it is to root by rolling back or installing a deodexed pre-rooted ROM - I have done that with my old phone and I know how easy it all is. I just want to retain my stock GB confirmation and root it. Thanks.

Sorry, I thought posting from the Note includes my signature, which has the info. about the ROM and kernel.
Anyway, I guess people on the Note do not see the signature in the xda app, so here are the details:
Stock GB ROM 2.3.6.7 XXLA6
Kernel: XXLA6
Modem: XXLA4
I am located in the US. By the way, I had XXKKA when I got the phone and then it got updated to the version above. I tried Google but didn't find where the firmware was originally from.

I have a rather complicated method in mind.
What I understand your requirement is : you want to retain your Stock GB ROM (most probably data as well, which could be the reason behind the reluctance to flash another GB ROM)
What if you:
1. flashed a CF-rooted GB kernel, and made a CWM backup(the ROM would still not be rooted);
2. carried out the roll-back procedure to get back to your current ROM with root but no data, and
3. restored just /data from CWM?
I believe stock GB ROMS are non-wipe, so you shouldn't have a problem. Since your current ROM is not directly rootable, I'd say there isn't any method to just root it.
Right, Chasmodo?
I have an even better idea: how about an upgrade while rooting?
Use this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25285584&postcount=3
Download LC1 Rom and follow the instructions from the above post.
P.S. Signature is pretty much invisible if you access XDA from your phone.
P.P.S. If you run into a bootloop after flashing follow this:

Thanks, but I want to stay away from CF kernels too, as they introduce the triangle and raise the binary flash counter.

Thanks, again. It seems like there is no way I can retain my stock GB ROM and modem. The concern with flashing any other version, such as LC1, is that I will go away from the originally installed ROM, and when there is an ICS update available for my version of GB (LA6), I may not be able to upgrade it using Kies or OTA. Is that true?
The first link you provided has a reference to CF kernel, which will introduce the the triangle and raise the binary counter. Is there any way around that?
And, is there anything I can do to avoid the bootloop?
How come LA6 is assigned to a ROM from Russia as well as Open Europe? I thought the characters "LA6" were assigned to merely one country/region.

Go to Chainfire's kernel thread and download CF-Root LA6. Extract the tar file, and flash it using Mobile Odin.
That way you don't get the triangle, and don't trigger the binary counter.

No specific benefit, it all comes down to user preference.
I never had much luck when testing Abyss, it kept draining my battery.
However, many users like it and report great battery life. Also, Abyss
can be overclocked.
CF-Root is closest to stock of all kernels. It's stable, just a tad slower
and easied on the battery.

Sorry for the delay. Chas is right. There's no specific benefit to using CF-Root. However, CF-Root is a completely stock kernel with only root and SuperSU added. So technically, it's just as stable as an unrooted stock kernel. When compared to elaborate kernels with overclocking, undervolting, boot scripts, added governors, etc., CF-Root can actually be a significantly more stable option for those in need of a rooted kernel. In addition to CF-Root, there are also kernels based on CF-Root. For example, although built from source instead of being a modified stock kernel, the new Franco kernel is largely based on CF-Root 5.3. As a matter of fact, they are so similar that even Chainfire's own CWM Manager app detects the new Franco kernel as CF-Root 5.3.
So you see, your options are vast. You're not limited to Abyss & CF-Root, but CF-Root is one of the best options available.

I am still confused whether the cf root causes the yellow triangle or not, as someone said in this thread that the triangleaway app removes the binary count, but I didn't get an impression the app removes the triangle, too.
Isn't there anyway I can flash the cf root kernel and not have the triangle and the increased binary count?

Hello, relatively new android user, and new (German) Galaxy Note owner here.
I've used one other android phone before (Galaxy W), but since that one is my business phone, I can't really toy with it much.
First thing I did after getting the Note was doing an OTA update, which of course netted me the hardlock-bugged LPY kernel, which I didn't know at the time.
There's quite the collection of safe Kernels around, but I'm not sure which one is the correct one for me.
I want to wait with flashing CM9, since I sorta like using the FM function, and afaik that doesn't work in CM9 yet.
I'm fairly content with the current stock ICS aside from the hardlock risk looming over my head like the sword of Damocles.
So, since the selection of Kernels overwhelms me a little, my actual question:
Is there a safe Kernel that just runs with the stock ICS ROM without any other changes that I can flash on and be done with? Or will any safe Kernel neccessiate a wipe/data restore/whatever?
Try franco kernel.Used to use it with GB but have since switched to CM9 kernel as I no longer use Samsung based ROMs.Read this, everything is here. Then reread. Then decide what to do.Do what you decided
Thanks for the response.
After reading through the most recent pages of the franco thread, that one seems to be unstable in recent builds, though. I use the alarm clock, so I don't want a phone that randomly reboots at night.
I guess I'll try going with Chainfire's Kernel instead. Wish me luck with my first kernel flashing on an android phone. D:
speedmod k3-3 for ICS. i tried franco's today and did not like it.

Agreed. Franco is buggy but speed mod is excellent.

Flashed speedmod k3-3 via CWM (since I don't have mobile odin and currently don't want to increment my flashcounter).
Seems to run so far.
Since I can't post on the speedmod thread yet (dev board~), I'll ask here: Will I have to factory reset if I want to avoid complications (I have titanium backups of everything), or can I just let it run like this?

shouldn't have to wipe data or anything for flashing a kernel.
Speedmod is the bomb. I tried franco but it messed up my wifi.
Part of what has me asking:
I flashed ICS from GB via OTA, but didn't do a reset back then (thank god), because I read about the hardbrick bug just in time.
Seems at least some stuff doesn't quite work right after that. The Software-Update widget that comes with stock ICS is an example of that. I'm not sure what else may be glitched.

Go to a CM9-based ROM. You won't regret it. Stable, smooth, solid.
I can recommend the Goku Kernel. It's based on Speedmod but comes with a few useful enhancements.

Hey, Sorry for the Noob question but I rooted my Note a couple of days ago (Still a Newbie) and was wondering which ROMs would be best to flash now.
I've been using the rooted phone but I couldn't find much of a difference in performance or anything. Actually, I don't even know how or what to remove to increase performance and battery life.
So if you guys could just help me out with this it would be real Helpful!
Question :
Which ROM is the easiest to work with? Since I'm a newbie I have a whole lot of chance that I might just do something stupid and end up with a Hard-bricked phone.
Any help is appreciated..!
Once again, I apologize for being a noob. I haven't really learned a lot about android phone since this is my first!
The first thing I'm going to ask you is, what is your current installed ROM? Stock GB or stock ICS?
If it's still in stock GB (2.3.6), I was using CheckRom Revo HD.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQGdSuJBgRA
This video gives you some overview on what that ROM is capable of. (Video courtesy of the original maker: aphroditelikesme)
It gives you some customization while giving you a boost in your battery life. Please read and read on the appropriate forums here in xda on how to install and use this ROM (if you want to)
Now if you want to upgrade to ICS stock 4.0, then can upgrade your ROM thru the standard way, OTA or thru PC KIES. Either way, your phone gets updated with the official firmware and remains rooted still. You may want to check www.samfirmware.com for new official ICS firmware of your region.
On my personal note, I reckon ICS gives me much better life than when I was using GB. Don't forget to install the indispensable tools like Titanium backup so that you can freeze or uninstall samsung's bloatwares there by releasing some needed rams on your phone's memory and also increasing some juices on it.
Hope that helps bud and wish all the best!
Cheers!
PS. Don't forget the 'Thank' button if I have helped you in some way or the other..

Firstly, Thanks! I could use all the help I get!
Now, coming to the point. I am running Rooted Stock ICS 4.0.3 XXLP8.
Yes, I have installed Titanium Backup and have freezed some of the unusable Samsung applications which always kept running and slowed down my phone..!
I might flash GB for some custom ROM but I would prefer keeping it on ICS cause flashing GB and then some ROM would put me at a higher risk of bricking the phone.
Could you suggest some ICS based ROMs which might be easy for a first timer to handle?
I can flash other ROMs later when I am confident enough not to brick my phone.

Well, sorry to break your bubble bud but I'm not an ardent fan of custom ICS ROMS. I prefer the stock one for now. Personally Touchwiz ain't that bad (in my opinion).
Since your still using 4.0.3, try to just consider upgrading it to 4.0.4. By the way I am already on 4.0.4.
There are tons of stock firmwares for 4.0.4, depending on where your from. Try to use a kernel that's pretty much close to stock itself. I'm currently using SpeedMod v3.9 for now and I must say, From the stock kernel that I was using before (CF root LRG 4.0.4), the battery life on my phone have increased tremendously.
Now if you really still want to try out some other custom ROMS, you can try to read and read on this development thread here or get some reviews from other users as well.
JellyBean is almost a working ROM but I still prefer the stock 4.0.4 ICS one..why? let's just say I prefer to use my Note's 'all' features working and using it as a daily driver.
Cheers!

I don't think 4.0.4 is out in India yet (It wasn't there the last time I checked). I'll still keep checking in from time to time though and upgrade as soon as possible.
If I were to stay on 4.0.3 can I still use the SpeedMod v3.9 kernel you're talking about? Also, I could really use a link on how to flash the new kernel as you might have figured out by now, I'm a Newbie
You can flash DXLRG (open germany) or the latest one (DXLRK) to just upgrade it to 4.0.4
For Asian release, I heard there's one already for SingTel but I'm not sure though if it comes with an Indian language pack on it.
Anyway, if you just want to stay on 4.0.3, YES you can still use SpeedMod kernel.** http://touristinparadise.blogspot.com/2012/05/samsung-galaxy-note-ics-download.html
Download the kernel to your SD card (internal or external)
Now since your rooted, download Mobile Odin, run it, grant access thru Superuser and go to the kernel section inside Mobile Odin pro and look for the kernel that you earlier saved from the download.
After that, just tap on flash firmware (inside Mobile Odin still) and that would restart your phone and once booted, you now have a new kernel already.
