MeDroid IA2SD not working - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I'm trying to install MeDroid ICS v6.1 with IA2SD, but I seem to be missing something.
Here's what I did:
- partitioned SD with GParted: first partition fat32, second one ext4 (2GB)
- full wipe
- installed the Rom (got random offset every time)
- on first boot I experienced an reboot before the Me Droid animation
- went through assistant, then rebooted phone
- looked in settings -> storage: 200 MB
- partitioned SD with recovery (CWM)
- according to gparted I now have first partition fat32, second one ext4 (2GB)
- full wipe and reinstall of the Rom
- assistant again, then rebooted the phone
- storage still shows only 200 MB internal memory
Sorry for my bad english, i hope i't understandable.
I would really appreciate any help on this
greets
gecko

Did you install the blackrose hboot (bootloader)?

Yes, of course, forgot to mention that. Blackrose is installed and the Rom itself is working fine.

Did you wipe, wipe, wipe before partitioning and install?

Last things I did before posting here were: "Wipe, wipe, wipe, repartition, reinstall" *me brave*

As long as everything seems to be working fine, I really do not know. The only difference between what I did and what you did is I partitioned my card with 4ext recovery. I do not think that should matter though, but as long as settings just see the 200 then it is obviously not working.
Here is a post from the medroid thread from someone who has a similar problem and how he fixed it. Hope it helps!

Thx. Unfortunately what's supposed there is exactly what I tried at first: deleting all partitions and making new ones from scratch.
Does it matter if the EXT partition is primary or logical?

good question on primary/logical--would assume primary
I partition inside phone and are not given a choice
Swap should be 0
If you want to experiment, backup card and repartition inside phone/ext4
Try sdformatter to format--full erase and size adjustment on
Then try a 1gb ext--have heard of some folks having issues with too large an ext, although that rarely happens till you get to like 3 or 4gb
or, try amon_ra recovery

Thx for your answer. Meanwhile i tried my old (8GB non SDHC) SD card with a 512MB ext4. Primary partition seems to be right since this is working. Now I have to determine if it's the new (16GB SDHC) card or the partition size. I'll give you feedback on this.

Update: with the old 8GB card every partition size seems to work. With the new one I can't find any working configuration. I can live with that and my little sister will be happy about the 16GB card. Thanks to you guys for your help

good luck gecko
you might the sdformatter method I mentioned on it, if you get time

Sluggish/unusable performance after apps2sd on Cyan 4.2.2

I got a shiny new class 6 16GB sd card. I partitioned it at about 15.5GB fat32 and 512 ext2, using the info in cyanogen's wiki: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Apps2SD_On_CyanogenMod
From there I did the ext3 and then the ext4 updates.
Although I've searched for answers for a few hours now, I've been unable to determine why the device slows to a crawl at each point of user interaction at this point. Even unlocking the screen can time out...
I backed out the changes and copied the apps back over to internal storage and everything is zippy again, so at this point I am looking for suggestions. One thing I noticed was that when I used parted to delete the ext partition so the apps wouldn't go back to the card on the next boot, it still listed the ext partition as ext2. Can someone running ext3 or 4 let me know whether parted lists their partitions as such or if they are always reported as ext2?
What other techniques should I try? I would very much like to make this work as I get constant low-space warnings in my current setup. Thanks.

just used parted to check and it says ext4 .... try using this guide .. worked really well for me to partition my sd ... also if you're having all these problems try wiping dalvik-cache and even data and your ext* partition if it comes down to it
What recovery image are you using?

amon ra's 1.2.3
EDIT: lol thought you were the OP
A more careful walk through the partitioning process and I can confirm that everything works as expected, as well as confirming that if upgrade_fs fails, then ext2 is a total dog. One particularly confusing thing was tracking down whether a swap partition was needed or not, but on the latest cyan roms it isn't so I skipped that one.

Problems after apps to SD EXT2 format

Hi
I have some problems with my Dream now after an format fore EXT2 so I can use apps to sd.
I have CyanogenMod 4.0.4
Iv'e used an guide and console for formating my SD card 8gb class 6.
I've made an 7.2gb fat32
700mb ext2
50mb linux swap
After that I converted the ext2 to ext4, checked everything with print and it was ok.
Than when I've rebootet my phone it woudnt start up, it came to the android in blue, and that blinked some and than the screen went black.
So my plan was to upgrade the 4.0.4 to 4.2.5 anyway so I did that.
My phone was an 32B so I used the HTC_ADP_1.6_DRC83_rooted_base.zip
Everything went great with that, but when I tried restarting the problem was still there...
Dont know what to do know?
Remove the ext4 partition?
Try restoring your memory card to original and then try to partition it again.
Ive tried to restore my memory card, no help.
Ive tried to boot the phone with no memorycard, still no go...
Dont know what to try anymore..
1) Format the entire card as fat32
2) add other partitions
3) Wipe from recovery
4) Flash your rom
Also this sub forum is for development, which this clearly isn't.
Ok sry i thought this was the place to ask with this.
I got the phone booting up with 4.2.5 and it worked great.
All my programs waws gone so I need to install them again, but no worry.
So I now tried to format the memorycard again, looks like it didnt work again and im at my problem again...
Now it hangs on the T-mobile screen, so I guess out with the battery and try an reboot before I start all over again...
Maby I'm not supposed to have programs on my SD?
make sure you partition properly.
fat>ext>swap
you can install amon_RA's recovery and let that partition your card for you
Hi.
Ive sendt my phone back to originale software, and than upgraded again, and it seems like it's 4.2.5 and the ext partition that is the problem.
If I change SD card to one without the ext partition it's no problem to start after an whipe..
I've tried reinstalling 4.2.5 but no luck, maby I shall trie an ext3 insted of ext4?
Yes have followed the guide on the pratition, and Fat32, EXT than swap

Keeps say "INSTALLING" but never completes and 16gb sd question, Thanks!

Happy Holidays, i'm using [ROM] RoDrIgUeZsTyLe™ 1.8, i've been using this rom for a couple weeks, i've been using his roms for a couple months. For some reason when i try to install apps from my sd card or market, it keeps saying "installing" but never completes. If I download from market it downloads 100% then says installing but never completes. I tried reinstalling some apps from sd card but it keeps saying installing. I wiped twice (factory reset). I went to [ROM] RoDrIgUeZsTyLe™ 1.9 back to 1.8 and same thing.
Also I just bought a 16gb sd card. I've read some say you don't have to partion anymore and i've read some say you need to. If you do, what settings should i use? I didn't know so i just set up 32mb, 512mb ext.2 and remainder ext. 3
But I go to settings and it says total space 14.32bg
Available 9.71gb
A2SD 457 mb

thanks for your response.
It claims 102mb available internal memory, i personally don't think that much is available.
As for Dalvik i don't know where it is or anything about it. The only time i've touched it was after rooting once i clicked clear dalvik cache. Should I move dalvik, if so how, how do i find out how much room is on it.?
Earlier after flashing the same rom again, it let me download about 20 apps then it went back to downloading 100% but not letting me install or uninstall anything from market or sdcard.
Not really sure on your problem, but--
Doesn't it say how much a2sd memory free?
How did you partition?
You want 512mb/ext3/no swap, not 32mb
If all worked ok before new card I would--
- backup SD Card
- Format SD Card with "SD Formatter" in a Card reader (FULL erase ON & NEW Size Adjustment ON). You can get it on web. It puts card to original condition.
- create ext3 with above specs. Amon will do that. Rom Mgr seems to do only ext2, however you can verify that with Mini Partition Tool Wizard from web.
-I did ext 2 thru Rom Mgr then used Amon to convert to ext3. Converting 2 to 3 did not wipe sdcard, but making partition will.
- put the backup back to SD
Of course you want USB Debugging enabled and Unknown Sources enable to do all this stuff. May not matter on just a Market app, but have them enabled anyway
Then follow instructions on OP page, if any, to move apps to sdcard. Or, see Dark Tremor web site.
I don't normally put Dalvik on sd, just cache.

sorry for late response Ken, so let me get this right, I downloaded sd formatter. So use this instead of the Amon recovery option Partition SD on my Nexus? I'm confused on the first partion you say should be 512mb then it ask about ext2 what should that be? then for ext 3 put NO SWAP?
And this Dalvik thing, so there's no need to move it to sd card? If so how? You said you just moved yours to cache or cleared the cache? if you moved it can you give me instructions.
Also the rom i'm using is Rod's

getting stuck on "installing" may be a problem with your google account. google still hasnt figured out why its happening. if it happens across different roms, that is probably the case

Partition SD card on Windows for people who can't be bothered to do it properly ;)

Firstly, BlaY0 has a great tutorial on how to do this properly, I suggest you do that to learn something.
Secondly, I cannot confirm that this is 100% safe. BlaY0's method should be 99% safe, I don't know about this as it is all automatic. BlaY0's method is tried and tested, this is not. I only used this method as I had a new SD card and I was in a hurry (exams coming up ) and I didn't have time to remind myself of BlaY0's method, and CWM only allows you to create up to 512mb partition. Also, I had a new computer, and I don't have time to set up ADB all over again.
Anyway, this is a method for people who don't want to use ADB to partition their SD card for A2EXT or DATA2EXT (a.k.a. apps2sd, etc etc), and are using Windows. If you're running linux, you could use something like gParted to partition it, not sure about OS X though. This method will allow a Windows user to create an EXT partition on their SD card alongside the FAT partition.
1) Download and install Minitool Partition Wizard, from here.
2) Open the program and delete all partitions from the SD card (which you will have inserted into the computer using an adapter or something). DO NOT DELETE THE PARTITIONS FROM THE HARD DISK! MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DELETING. Oh, and make sure the SD card is backed up
3) Create a FAT32 primary partition. You decide how big you want it, but I'd advise you leave 1024mb (1gb) for the EXT partition.
4) Create an EXT2/EXT3/EXT4 (you decide) primary partition. Use up the rest of the space on the SD card.
5) Click assign/OK/whatever and wait for it to complete
6) You now have your partitioned SD card ready for an A2SD ROM!
7) You need to assign a drive letter to the FAT32 partition. Not sure about the EXT partition. At first I forgot to do this and my card didn't show up in Windows, though Partition Magic can still see it.
Like I said, do yourself a favour and use BlaY0's method here, but if you're lazy or you don't have time or ADB doesn't work anymore, use this.
Nice one m8. You mentioned that CWM doesn't offer adding partitions bigger than 512 MB. Well, you're right but that's why I made a customized version of fake-flash that can do bigger... to 1 GB. It can even add second ext partition for some exotic types of data2ext. On top of that I added auto block alignment which is described in my guide (the manual one) so no more calculations and manual labour

Didn't know that, good to know, for those of us still using data2ext, this is important...
Wish this was up earlier, spent an hour repartitioning my card using parted.Couldn't upgrade to EXT3 and ended up using CWM 3.0.2.8 to do it instead lol
What CWM is using under the hood for partitioning is actually parted.

Tried it but it didnt work not sure what the problem is...
formatted my SD to FAT 32 and reserved 1G for EXT3 both as primary partition in the Mini Partition Tool
Plugged it in my phone,
Ran ADB shell
# a2sd --enabled, rebooted
on reboot nothing seemed to have changed... went back to ADB shell
tried a2sd --free it says A2Sd is not active ...
a2sd -- enabled again and it says it is enabled but not active
so im guessing it cant read or recognize the EXT3?!
Any clues... i didnt want to move my Dalvik to SD ... should I try EXT4 or even EXT2?

It has been mentioned here like a gazilion times, boot up your device with logcat and see the first few lines...there is your answer!
Google how to wait for the device with logcat
1) Downloaded and installed Minitool Partition Wizard from your link. I got the free home edition
2) backed up my SD card and Open the program and delete my SD card partition ( which is in a card reader)
3) Created a FAT32 primary partition of 69xx MB and left the rest 1024 MB for the other unallocated space
4) Right click on the Unallocated Space to create an EXT3 as primary partition with the default cluster size.
5) At this point, it showed 2 partition on my SD, one with the drive letter for windows FAT32, and the 2nd one Ext 3 with 1GB and Primary. Clicked OK and Apply and wait for it to complete.
6) once complete , put it in phone, plugged usb and ran adb shell
7) ran a2sd --enable, it said reboot phone.. i made a mistake to reboot by adb the first time but then did the whole process again a 2nd time using reboot from the phone....
Tried logcat using this command "adb -d logcat>mylogfile.txt"
couldnt find the file anywhere ... if i dont redirect to the txt , it goes too fast to read and there's soo much debug messages what do i need to look for?
I thought it would save me time to get it done through windows... but its taking me as much time it w0uld probably get me with the manual way...
i'll give it a try tomorrow...
8) rebooted fine, and i was still low on space.. so went back in adb sheel to check a2sd --free but this is where it says not active..

Tbh I'm really not sure. One thing I forgot to mention in the guide is that you should assign a drive letter to the FAT32 partition or it won't show up in Windows. I didn't assign one to my EXT4 partition though, and DATA2SD is working great for me. Try deleting all partitions from the SD card and start again. It'll only take 10 minutes, and if it still doesn't work just use the manual way.
Sorry.

Yeah i assigned a drive letter to FAT32...
Also the FAT32 , was my first block allocated partition, the 2nd partition was EXT3... i will redo the whole process and recreate EXT4 instead.
"DATA2SD is working great for me" ... you mean "A2SD working great for me" ... right? unless i'm missing something else that i needed to run..
ps: I recalled, after it was not working, i took out the sd and put it back in the reader to open MiniTool, it showed EXT2 instead of EXT3 ( which i was sure i chose )... and what's weird is it was reporting used space like 41MB... so obvisouly, the ROM wrote something on it...
Formatting it again to EXT3, didnt delete the 41 Used space, but it did convert it back to EXT3 ...probably nothing but mentioning as well

I suggest you start over, something seems to have gone wrong.
A2SD is where the apps are stored on the EXT partition.
DC2SD is where the dalvik cache is also stored on the EXT partition.
DATA2SD is where the entire /data partition on the phone is stored on the EXT partition of the memory card.
Partitioning the SD card with a FAT32 partition and EXT partition is done first, then you decide which one is for you. DATA2SD does have one or two issues, such as the risk of corruption - you'd then have to completely reinstall the ROM. A2SD and DC2SD are fine but I still found myself running out of internal memory.
i gave up and used ROM Manager to create my partition ...i couldnt set it to 1G because 512MB is maximum but it was painless to create.
it asked me to create a swap partition... i've read somewhere that swap partition is useless or barely used in newer android os? do you guys have any swap partition if so how big are they?
Also, did you move Dalvik cache to sd? isnt it slower on SD? i mean shouldnt dalvik cache be on RAM whihc i assume is faster than any external sd?
thanks for your insight

ok so sorry for a double post but im having an issue partitioning.

is there somthing im doin wrong? is used this guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/SD_card_partitioning

Acer Iconia Tab A110 rooted, Cwm, 4.1.2
Can you actually have a 22gb ext partition? This might be something to look into to see if you can do it.
Edit: this got me interested so I searched myself, yes you can but apparently it depends on the chosen block size and hardware limitations, so u may have an issue with either.

[Q] EXT2 cache partition a big fail for me !! :mad::mad::mad::mad:

Does anyone out there know what causes 4EXT CWM and Amon Ra all (with custom tools) all to fail in regards to seeing a formatted cache partition on EXT-2.
I have DONE EVERYTHING I can possibly think of, from using Gpart in Ubuntu, to the phone itself. Many times in the past I have made it would just leave my 2 Gig cache partition empty because NOTHING works EVER!...
Did I miss something, can you even have 4 separate functional partitions with the Nexus 1 ?
The closest I have come to something really functional is with 4EXT, it seems to go through all the stages but when I check alignment I only get the first 2 partitions (fat-32 and EXT-1) EXT-2 says it is unformatted for some odd reason! This has been performed using a full card wipe on an external source. Even still everything is seems to go as planned until I check the card. With 4EXT I attempt to force a ext3 or 4 format and it restarts the recovery ! When I check A2SDGUI it says I only have 15 megabytes for cache.
I have used black rose and set it to 220/15/201 (dla5244), tried the latest versions of 4EXT and wasted many hours before posting...
CAN ANYONE HELP !!
Download SD Formatter from here, run the program and choose under Options:
FORMAT TYPE: FULL (OverWrite)
FORMAT SIZE ADJUSTMENT: ON
This will format your µSD (be sure to backup your important stuff). When finished, try to make an ext4 partition with 4EXT recovery. You only need one ext4 partition (so no 2nd) and no swap.
Thank you for the fast response but I have tried that. Except I want this phone to work optimally and I have figured everything else out so it is hard to settle for mediocrity. I mean I know that 1 SD-EXT partition works... Even 1 + fat32 and SWAP but I can NEVER have the phone identify the SD-EXT2 partition... no matter what... In partition magic (terrabyte bootit) and of course Gpart in Ubuntu all indicate that everything is great. Except the phone doesn't use the partition and like I was saying before the 4EXT shows it as unformatted after it's format. When I force a format on the partition the software reboots !?!... And if I leave it claiming it's unformatted even though we may think it is, QND's MIUI can only see 15 megabyte cache partition !
But then why not just go back to stock roms and one partition? To your point it's hard to step back and use something less inclined for performance when it should work ? no ?
I know I am a NOOB BUT I also know that it seems like no one out there can offer CLOSURE on the matter. like "ohh that's because the N1 cannot identify a EXT2 partition" or "ohh... that's your SD card's fault it isn't aligned right etc."
I mean I can see others have had this problem and gave up, I don't want to give up unless it is a limitation of the hardware (?sd card?)
Another way to look at it is although beautiful and helpful for most... 4EXT should be focused on getting that to work, I would think... To your point everyone is confused and shouldn't have more than 2 partitions ? Doesn't seem right to me.
Anyways if you have any other ideas OR anyone else can think of a solution lets do it I want to invest time into this and make it work !!
Sincerely! !
Why should you have more than 2 partitions on your µSD? 1 fat32 for your pictures and videos and stuff, and if you don't have enough space for your apps, 1 ext4 for A2SD (maximum 1GB).
Swap is not necessary and in fact slows your system down. A thread about swap is somewere to be found here.
And why the 2GB cache partition? You already have a 15MB cache partition on your phone.. 220/15/201.
You really don't need more than 2 partitions on your µSD.
?
I am willing to accept that you are right that it isn't needed. But I am not using A2SD, I am using XPART. According to the guides I am read, the best way is with 3 or 4 partitions (Swap being the option). The Cache partition on the other hand makes sense because even with titanium backup I can see my 60 or so apps are storing a couple hundred megs in cache. So this way a dedicated partition for processing things once instead of multiple times would provide the fastest solution. Being that the n1 is not the top performer anymore (still my fave though ), any extra speed should help when I am using my phone day to day.
The QND MIUI mod by jbbandos has the following about XPART :
"You can use it with one FAT32 and one ext4 partition, as A2SD, which seems to be the more stable setup, but the recommended setup for speed is one FAT32, one large ext4 (for your data partition), one smaller ext4 (cache), and a swap partition. I'm not that much of a fan of a swap partition, as I am always afraid it will wear out the SD card precociously, but most people report it working well, and I prefer the single ext4 for stability, but YMMV. "

Anyways that is what I want, and I will invest the time to get it. I believe that 4EXT is primarily in development to perform this function. But I have a problem, with the results. I realize that it may not be necessary but I would like to know the WHY as to why this doesn't work.
AS ALWAYS thank you for you help none the less..
Never used XPART, I didn't know they recommend this. I never used apps to ext scripts longer than a few days.
This is because I'd rather install 10 crappy apps less, than having a slower system. Then again, if I would use an apps to ext script, I would definitely go for stability .
Unfortunately I don't know what you could do now..
I found my previous QND build with XPROT using blackrose was good for like 7 months !!! I just wanted to update and get it working properly. I would HIGHLY recommend it as you phone sees like 1 gig of internal mem so all apps that have widgets are useful and don't need to go to SD. In my opinion it was more stable than stock !!! Honestly, great tool.
OH yeah and it is also much faster I have found !
