Hello guys...
I'm new to this forum and new to Galaxy Tab. 8.9 and new to Android system.
The tab is at home and I didn’t even unpack it.
I'm kind of a person that likes to explore and change setting and stuff.
The first thing in my mind now is to boot the tab and update Android version, as I think it comes with 3.0 version and I guess there was an update came on after that.
But from your experience as 8.9 owners and once you were new to it.
What things should I do to it? update what? Disable what? Charging maybe? Tweak sensitivity? [if there is a feature like that!].
What not to change? not to delete? not to disable?
Any tip will be appreciated and it will definitely be new to me as a person never had an Android device and leaving iphone soon for a Samsung device
Which tab do you have?

It is Samsung Galaxy tab 8.9, Wi-Fi.
Where to start...
An OTA (Over the Air) update is a good start as 3.2 is the latest and 4.0 Ice cream sandwich is on the way.
Out of the box, the Galaxy tab is very good without customization. I'd spend my time getting used to the interface and putting my main info on Widgets and syncing everything. There is so much to customize. You will soon learn what you like and what annoys. From there, you can look at some of the things you don't like and tweak. I would leave rooting till a little later just till you get used to things and ics is coming soon. Good idea to see stock issues first but Xda is a great source of info if you want to go down that path.
Sent from my GT-P7300 using Tapatalk
1) root it (see the XDA forum, it's all perfectly explained there)
2) install cwm
3) backup stock rom
4) install Overcome, or one of the two ICS roms
5) setcpu, auto memory killer, voodoo screen utility
6) have fun

Fyi the wifi version is only Android 3.1. There is no OTA update for 3.2. I'm hoping we get ICS soon but I'm not holding my breath.

No need to be disappointed. Samsung's devs are running at full pace to roll out ICS for dozens of devices. I'm sure they're doing their best. ICS was just released a couple months ago!

I know it's not really quick and easy but don't forget manufacturers received early versions of the source around May (when it was officially announced). In all honestly I was mostly hoping for 3.2 since I've heard it helps performance but it would be really nice to get a date for ICS.
Strange. I am using a tab 8.9 wifi and I did get the 3.2 update OTA. Actually, it arrived instantly when I started using my device a few weeks ago.

Not actually strange. The US region (yes, Sammy releases ROMs in a region basis) hasn't received official 3.2 as of this day, but most of Europe has already, along with other regions (Asia for example). I really dislike how they manage updates. Thankfully we have devs on our side. I can't imagine being stuck with 3.1 firmware.

Does a changelog between 3.1 and 3.2 exist? I am also still on 3.1, and I have no real complaints... Plus I read some people had problems with 3.2, so I will wait for ICS.

If you are asking specifically for a Samsung changelog, then no. Good luck obtaining an answer from them apart from "improves stability and performance". Problems with 3.2 are mostly user error.

I received 3.2 two days ago (as a matter of fact when I bought and started the Tab) - I'm in New York and got it OTA. You have to be registered with Samsung in order to get it.
It makes a very large difference for the better in responsiveness and scrolling.

Why are samsung leaking these to test, The FroYo FW must be into a good stage of development by now, I am unsure why we are 'beta testing' this and hoping for FroYo to be released working well straight off the bat,
Do you guys think we will get FroYo releases before it is officially released? I mean all these firmwares we are testing will be made into one that gets officially released.

I fired up a google search and i found a lot of hits about a froyo alpha on a galaxy spica. Maybe some things got mixed up.
Yep, can't find anything about Froyo alphas or leaks for the Galaxy S, just for some of the older Galaxy phones.
I think we Android owners are a fairly impatient bunch.
In the time it's taken for the iPhone to go from 3.0 to 4.0, Android has had:
- 1.6 Donut
- 2.0 / 2.1 Eclair
- 2.2 Froyo
The phone manufacturers must have a heart attack every time a new version of Android is released and their handset owners immediately begin screaming for it...
Luckily the Galaxy S is the flagship of Samsung which they intend to sell 10 million of, so chances are we'll be seeing good support and the stream of beta firmwares shows they're not sitting still.
Froyo has been confirmed for August in Korea, and most likely September in international markets.
We've got to be patient and remember the Nexus One is still the ONLY Android phone that has received an official Froyo update as of yet. Even the Desire, EVO 4G, Droid, Incredible and Droid X are still on the waiting list.
From the sounds of it August-October will be the time the various handset manufacturers will be rolling out their Froyo updates.

Well they don't do themselves any favours by launching a new phone every couple of weeks and insisting on putting their own UI on top of Android.
Looking further afield: anyone think that Samsung will put Gingerbread on this baby?

Possibly but I think I have to go with the sceptic masses here that say samsung support isn't good in longterm and so I guess they won't do that. Unless ofc gingerbread is going to bring the massive UI update that vanilla android so desperately needs for usablity and samsung decides that touchwiy isnt necessary anymore.

There are developers assigned to port CyanogenMod to the Vibrant (T-Mobile US version):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=729364
Unfortunately, looking at Wes Garner's Twitter, he seems rather more keen on the Slide than the Vibrant:
I like the slide better
@wesgarner so does that mean your gonna keep developing for the slide?
@XJRodzx probably more for it than the vibrant

So don't know how that's necessarily going to work out. The intention is there, though, anyway - hope it's still in progress!
I have doubts with Gingerbread...from what we know so far, it's supposed to have a (MUCH NEEDED!) UI overhaul based around the Gallery's sexy look.
If a phone is launched with a certain interface, chances are the manufacturer probably wouldn't be keen on releasing an update that changes everything because of the issue with it being different to what the buyer paid for. Basically, it changes the product, and the picture on the box is no longer what you've bought. It's all well and good with something like Eclair to Froyo since it's largely just performance improvements and some new features rather than an overhaul.
If anything, I think Samsung would be more likely to release a new version of the Galaxy S at Gingerbread's launch. Much like it's doubtful the HTC Desire / Evo 4G / Incredible will get Gingerbread updates. Instead, HTC will probably have new devices ready for the new interface.
The Nexus One is the only current device I believe has a chance of Gingerbread, mainly because it's the 'official' Google phone and has been promoted and sold as a developer phone. They'll be wanting some nice apps ready for Gingerbread when it launches which will obviously need to be in development before Gingerbread-equipped phones launch.
Someone needs to put all these posts in order! and first of all establish a filing system! tags(well who puts tags?? maybe forced tick boxes) or brackets or something that will make it easier to find stuff!
That being said, can someone please point me to the official froyo for galaxy s? I cannot make kies work for some reason and I need to do it manually.
I have froyo but is either ****ed up, or beta, or something, cause it crashes like hell! Baseband version is I9000xxJP2
While you are at it, a guide on what is JPM, JP2, JP♥, etc is would be nice!
Thanks!
EDIT: I found one guide for installing 2.2 on the galaxy here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818556
Also try this website: http://www.samfirmware.com which has all the "official" firmware for Galaxy.
Still it would be nice to know about all the JP*versions...
There is no official froyo as yet. JPM and JP6 were briefly released earlier this month but they are by no means complete and still seem to have a number of issues. Samsung said that a new super fast official froyo release will be with us sometime in November. If you're brave enough you can try one of the releases available, I did recently, but I've gone back to JM1 that was supplied on my phone.
I know its an annoying and long wait but with any luck this will give Samsung the chance to get it right

it is VERY annoying, especially with all the good modders and coders that are around in xdadevs, and to be honest they prolly can build a froyo version much faster and cleaner than the "official" one....

Umm.. You do realise the modders here mostly take the Samsung code and enhance it right? Modding ROM's is a lot more difficult then writing/maintaining them (remember, the modders don't touch the drivers).
The situation does suck, but I actually respect many companies which delay releases more than those that don't. Because those that consistently deliver on schedule, often deliver their software with MAJOR issues (issues which may even require hardware to be returned for repair)
You can find here, on my PC:
c:\Users\Developer_007\.android\Froyo
FroYo for unbranded phones should be here early November. For carrier models Samsung have stated by the end of November. All we can do is play the waiting game. It gets delayed, delayed and delayed. Will probably get delayed till November, who knows?
Where you get information about november? Prooflink please!

So, another month of waiting. Fantastic.
I'm curious if this will be also the case for the rest of Europe?
They just replied to a customer asking when in November and they said
We're releasing Froyo from the beginning of November and we're expecting all networks to have it by the end of November. The key benefits of Froyo will include Google maps with navigation, as well as improved browser performance.
In Singapore too. Samsung Singapore has said that they are almost done with the froyo 2.2 and it should be release on schedule! =)

So I heard rumors that Samsung is not continuing production of the Captivate and will be phasing it out. Is it true??????? This would mean no Gingerbread for us. Anyone have any more info on this?
We most likely will not get Gingerbread anyway. Samsung only committed to one major release (that being froyo). There are leaks of it available on the i9000 but I would be very surprised if those ever shake down the tree to the Captivate. Especially with the Galaxy S 2 coming out in the coming weeks.
I'm a bit more optimistic about it. Perhaps we won't get an official 2.3 for the Captivate (from what I remember, Samsung doesn't build a firmware for a carrier branded device until the carrier asks for it, so you would have ATT to blame for that one), but I'm confident that the i9000 will get an official "Gingerbread". If they release an official 2.3 or 2.4 for the i9000, the source will follow soon after, and we can build a Captivate version from that.
if a cell phone is in your hand, it has been phased out already, in some regard.

Exactly. We will certainly get Gingerbread eventually, because the i9000 will get it. And what the i9000 gets, we get.
Also, while not entirely stable, CM7 is working on the Captivate, and that's gingerbread.
i doubt it going to be phased out that quick. Keep note, the phone is still less than a year old and a powerhouse in terms of performance.
Tegra 2 GPU performance is still just about on par with the GPU in the Galaxy S phones. Only thing is that it has dual-core for faster regular computing.
There are already leaked builds of the Galaxy S gingerbread.
And yes, CM7 has a fairly stable build of gingerbread AOSP for the Captivate. Im running it currently and its pretty darn good. Keep in mind its AOSP and built from the group up pretty much by the ppl over at Cyanogen and doesn't have a single trace of Touchwiz which is awesome.

Nice. Rig.
Well it makes sense... Why would they keep making new Captivates/Vibrants/Fascinates/Epic 4Gs/Nexus S' when they're just about to release their Galaxy S 2 phones which are MUCH better? They have tons of stock already out there, so I bet they've already stopped production on these phones awhile ago.
Also, they mentioned about a week ago or so that all Galaxy S phones will be getting Gingerbread... The update problem wasn't because of Samsung, it was the carriers holding them back, everyone else in the world got their Froyo update months ago, the US was the last to get it.

I recall reading somewhere that Samsung is planning on doing the same with the Galaxy S 2 as they did with the current Galaxy S phones, have them on all carriers with slight hardware differences and different names. So if that's the case, you'll have a version of the Galaxy S 2 available on AT&T... Trying to dig up the article where I read that, will update this post when I do.
That's makes sense that they'll do that. But on samsungs website it shows that the infuse is coming to att which I believe only has a single core processor the hummingbird. So that will be a little bit of a bummer.

Tmo stopped selling the Vibrant as soon as the 4g came out, so I bet the cappy will be done for when the infuse is out.

CM7 doesn't use the leaked i9000 version.. It's built from the official Nexus S sources, with tons of hand-crafting to get it to work properly on the Galaxy S line.
This guy may give me a 7' Samsung Galaxy Tab White today. Just wanted to know...can that one get Honeycomb 3.0 on it it without ROOTING? Will it OTA update to Honeycomb????
60 something looks...and no one knows. Guess the answer is no since i don't see it anywhere on google that it says yes. Even tho i saw some kind of Honeycomb Port its suppose to have. Think its for the bigger 8.9 and above tho.
I do not think anyone but Samsung knows the answer. From hardware there should not be any problem to get honeycomb or ics. But it up to Samsung to give an official update or not.

Then he goes "They cant say right now..because they may say one thing..and it may not happen". Not far to us they said. But if the 7 inch dont have 2.3 now..i doubt they will get any higher. Im not getting the 7inch from the dude after all. He doesnt want to trade.

I'm on my tab right now and it updated to gingerbread through kies without any issues. Even if samsung don't release on official honeycomb update, I'm sure someone will!

Samsung Kies is a software used to manage your device.
It handles the firmwares updates, backups and stuff like that.
You can download it from Samsung website.
As for the official honeycomb for the 7", if I were you, I wouldn't expect it...
Anyway, it's actually pretty easy to flash a rom, do some reading and you'll see it's really really easy...
I have the same issue. I dont mind rooting it. There are several confusing directions to upgrade to Honeycomb from Froyo. Can anyone point at the right link?
Has anyone heard anything new about us officially getting ICS? It is taking forever, i know our ROM's are stable enough without it but i miss the camera
no news yet.
it was supposed to be Q2 as far as i remember but time is running out.
im seriously pissed off at samsung who are being real d*cks about updating devices to ics.
even small sh*tty devices like huawei media pad have had official ics updates and we bought the most expensive tab thinking it would entail good support but so far nothing
basically i've given up waiting. when it comes ill be happy but im not counting the days / holding my breath
Totaly agree!, I am using ROM Stock (3.2) and I gave up about Sammy ICS, I'am waiting a net model with ICS in Brazil, but I feel so sorry because I think we will have no 8.9 new models
:\

For source that has been out since October? Take the Galaxian Soup AOSP and add the camera and touchwiz. Done.
This is an insane wait with so many other tegra 2 devices already having official ICS ROMs

According to this on Android Central it's going to be late July
July was confirmed by Samsung on Facebook Last Month
Waiting for warmer weather here in the UK before they start dishing out Ice cream Sandwiches

we all know how well they stick to what they promise...
Well Samsung is always late for updates because they always manage to release a new device where there are new android versions coming up. :S
I can understand why they wouldn't want to update, I tried the galaxy tab 2 and it's much smoother and really working very well with ICS considering is the same hardware it just doesn't make sense to update when you can buy the same thing again just for the software update.
Honestly I would even pay some dollars to Samsung if they allow me to update next month.

Well - the P7300 isn't mentioned in there at all :-(
Am I right in assuming that the SGH-i957 and the P7300 are completely different (the custom ROMs would suggest so)

yes completely different!
they use different hardware thats why the roms aren't compatible from one to another!

Yeah, but that argument doesn't hold because most of their new devices are still released with Gingerbread. The Galaxy IIIS is actually an exception and not the rule. Go to gsmarena.com and look at all the newly released and announced Samsung phones--most on Gingerbread

Why would you say that? They don't even make an 8.9 Wi-Fi only anymore if what I'm getting on their website is correct. Unless that is you are not talking about the Wi-Fi one.
For Wi-Fi only people there is no new device.
