Question about Rooting in the US - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello there! I apologize for being a twit, but I just received my shiny white Note today and am super excited; coming from an Atrix this is a huge upgrade! I did have a question about rooting though. My phone has the N7000XXKKA (2.6.35) kernal, and I've seen the specific rooting tools in the Development section, but I noticed some of the files have the same name but different countries attached to them. Do I need to know where my phone was made? Or can I use any of the files that match the kernel version I currently have? Thanks!

The original firmware on my phone was for Brazil (UBKK1) and I put on checkRom (which uses XXLA4.) Everything works fine.

For Rooting, you need not to care about your region, You have kernel KKA, then you go to this tread, find 'I have kernel KKA'(lower part of OP) download required file, extract n run I am unrooted script.

Thanks! Your thread was incredibly helpful and did the trick. I have a question that's not really related, but you might know: If I install one of the custom roms, will it break the pressure sensitivity of the S-Pen? I do a lot of sketching with it so I don't want it to stop functioning.

[HOWTO] root Koodo version of Optimus One P500h 10v

!!ATTENTION!!
THIS INFORMATION HAS BECOME OUTDATED.
There are probably newer and easier ways of accomplishing your goals that are now available. Read the entire thread for tips from other people about how to get your phone rooted - their suggestions are likely to be better options for your needs. I will not be maintaining this thread, but I will leave it up as a record for others to read. Good luck!

Original Post:
Hi. I had trouble getting my Optimus One from Koodo Mobile rooted. So, here is some info that I hope will help others get through the process a bit faster. I mainly followed the instructions in various threads from XDA, but I needed to do things differently.
!!! REMEMBER, THIS IS INFORMATION FROM A BIT OF A NOOB. I'M JUST TRYING TO HELP.
!!! ALSO, I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILTY FOR ANYTHING GOOD OR BAD THAT COMES FROM APPLYING WHAT IS SAID IN THIS THREAD.
!!! THIS INFORMATION IS ONLY INTENDED FOR USE ON THE OPTIMUS ONE FROM KOODO MOBILE RUNNING FIRMWARE VERSION 10v.
It is probably not worth asking me any questions, since I barely got through the process properly myself.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Drivers
So, first I installed the LG PC Suite software because I think that gets you the USB drivers needed for this phone. I think LG calls it "Download LG Mobile Support Tool to PC" on their support site at:
http://www.lg.com/sg/support/product/support-product-profile-mobile-redux.jsp?customerModelCode=Optimus%20One%20P500&initialTab=drivers&targetPage=support-product-profile-mobile-redux
Telus 2.2 firmware version V10G_00
So, since android 2.2.1 is not rootable on Optimus One, I had to downgrade to android 2.2. I found a link to a Telus version of P500h that is android 2.2 at the following link (make sure you download the one that ends in "V10G_00.kdz"):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12253960#post12253960
Installing Telus firmware using KDZ
I followed steps #2 through #8 from the following link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=875881
KDZ worked well, just so you know.
Rooting
Now I used "z4root" to permanently root. It was super easy (way easier than rooting my MT3G Slide). z4root is NOT in the market anymore so you need to sideload it onto your SD storage, then install it with any apk manager.
This site:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=901247
led me to this site, where I downloaded z4root from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
After that, I was all rooted up... finally.
So, I obviously am NOT trying to take any credit for the real efforts made by others. I want to say thank you to all people involved with the links and programs I referred to. I really appreciate what people do for others here at XDA. My phones would not be rooted or other kinds of fun without those people.
THANKS!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
On a bit of a side note, you might want to unlock you phone too... so you could use it with FIDO, etc. So, I used a site called "mobileincanada". It was $20 and took less than 24 hrs to get the code. I was happy with that.
Nice write-up, I had to follow a similar path. The most trouble I had was finding a firmware that worked.. I ended up using the same TELUS firmware. It works great, much faster than the original Koodo firmware.
Sorry for my question: what is the difference between your P500h and the other P500 devices? is it a branded device with special firmware?
I thought, all P500 can be flashed with every P500 *.kdz (for country) or XDA ROMs
for P500
I wished you wrote this yesterday but thanks. I figured it out yesterday . This is the sickest 150$ phone I have ever had. I get 1100 quadrant score :O
If you want a stock, rooted 2.2.1 (Telus V10S - same as Koodo's stock V10v)
You'll need a custom recovery to flash it: [DEV] Custom Recovery P500/Thunderg

Thanks Kwen! This is very useful - now no need for the kdz updater.
Edit: or now we can keep the Koodo version of 2.2.1 and just root it using Gingerbreak (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765) - no KDZ needed, no recovery needed (prior to root). Obviously, recovery is still recommended after root.
the only question that i have is where can i GET the stock 2.2.1 for my provider? i'm with Koodo, and i live the custom roms, but i need to flash back to stock to see if i can get my mms working correctly again. and i apologize in advance if this is the wrong thread.

Each ROM is customised differently with different features. Basically stay stock if you do not know what features you want.
DO NOT flash a any ROM until you have backed up your EFS folder (google hint = IMEI).
If you ask what is your EFS folder you are not ready for a non stock ROM.
On most proper instructions for flashing a rom, EFS backup step is compulsory.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
If you really need a reason to stay on stock:
1. You need to get used to the phone.
2. You never flashed SGS until now.
3. You have not read anything the other forum colleagues gave you.
4. You did not even tried to search the forums before posting this.
5. You might brick the device and then get back here and complain.
Need more? Sorry, but before posting you, and others that want everything on a plate, should use search and read everything posted here.
The "Galaxy S I9000 General" section clearly says: Discussion about the Samsung Galaxy S I9000 (tips & tricks, etc)
Every custom rom has a "How To" section in the OP. Also, every rom has a "What to do in case of" section. So you can try it on your own. There were cases in which the owner hardbricked the device in the first 45 minutes after he received it. So be careful.
i don't know what EFS even mean.
i'm just lazy to read all of it and there's not much i can understand.
so maybe you're all right that i stay with the stock firmware.
my phone still hasn't arrived, i'll just post here again what firmware it has and how should i update it.
btw, one more thing, so custom ROM's acts like a customized Android firmware, is that right?
and thanks for everyone who replies here and gives me their advices.

Again many this has been covered on many threads relating to flashing ICS ROMS in particular. Flashing can result in the IMEI number being over written Your IMEI is stored encripted in a file contained in the EFS folder (IMEI = unique number that identifies your handset on the mobile networks) and then not being able to make or recieve phone calls in extreme examples to random apps downloading from google play or not able to access google play at all.
For more info on this i strongly suggest that you google "backing up EFS folder" and "backing up IMEI"

but there's a custom ROM that has been leaked that looks like Android 4 (ICS).
will there be a Android 2.4?
i never knew that Android needs a lot of work compared to iOS where it just needs to be jailbreak for you to have the freebies and to be open source.
Iphones run on a common HARDWARE
Android have many different versions of hardware ie Samsung, HTC etc etc etc
Each android phone requires the base code of Android to be customised with device specific drivers etc hence the difference between Android and Iphones.
Your wording is exactly that "CUSTOM" meaning not a Samsung ROM.
As stated before Samsungs stance with the SGS 1 is that they will not release ICS for the handset as there is not enough available RAM (memory) for ICS and their Touchwiz apps
i think i want to install a ROM if i get my Galaxy S by tomorrow.

ICS Repack Problems
Hi all,
I managed to flash ICS Repack by Chainfire on my galaxy note today. It is pretty cool and really fast. But I've few questions to ask regarding this new ROM. Please be kind enough to direct me to a appropriate thread if these questions are already been asked and solved.
After I flash ICS Repack, I cannot find CWM anymore. What happened to it ? and how I can get it back ?
How I can go back to my old GB rooted ROM (I've CW backup of that rooted LB2 GB ROM) ?
By now, this ICS version cannot render South Asian languages. but LB2 rendered it very well. Are there any option to get that language support on this ICS ?
I need to change this Keyboard (Chinese) to English. Any other method to change it (Instead of installing GO Keyboard) ?
In our county phone numbers have two formats (our numbers are start with "0" but receiving calls don't have that starting "0" ). But in this ICS ROM, those 2 numbers are Identifying as two different numbers. Any method to fix that issue ?
Can I get my CPU speed to 1.4GHz again ?
Please be kind enough to help me on these matters.
Thank You.
This is why users should study BEFORE they flash. Anyways. Flash CWM, boot it, resrore backup. Cant help you much. Just got my Note happy studying

Stick with GB for now...people working with ICS around here like to make you jump through hoops just to get your phone to work...so if you're not will to spend the time on it, then stick with GB...no fuss, no muss.

Root is easy to obtain on this device.
You could flash a pre- rooted stock rom with Odin or depending on your rom you could flash a kernel that gives you the ability to use cwm and then flash supersu.zip.
Take a look at the development forum or search for rooting in it. YouTube offers video guides to root your device.

You could flash a pre- rooted stock rom with Odin or depending on your rom you could flash a kernel that gives you the ability to use cwm and then flash supersu.zip.

Thanks. Sorry I am not an expert on this so I might need a bit more help. To root in the phone as you say I need Odin. WOuld any version of Odin be ok or should I get one that supports my phone?
About tutorial on youtube, fine I will have a look. For the zip file to become root, are you saying I can get it straight from odin?
Finally, the development forum: I can't find the one for my phone on xda, could you possibly point me there please?
thanks

This is the general section for the i9000, the international version of the galaxy s1. On the left upper side, about the thread name, are links, click on the i9000. It should direct you to the overview of all i9000& 9001 relevant sub forums.
There are two Odin version that work with this phone, they are mostly included in the Odin packages or kernels.
Zip files can be flashed in the cwm/ twrp recovery, Odin can't flash zip files.
Here are some sample guides: http://m.youtube.com/user/totallydubbedHD. There are a lot of more tutorials out there, but that's a user I would recommend you. Written tutorials are in the q&a are and the development forum.

Thanks I had a look at the videos you sent me. I have managed to root and unlock my sim card, so now I have to flash the rom. I had a look around in the gt-i9000 forum, found interesting posts, but I don't understand what ROM version I should get. Ideally I would like to have the latest bug free one. I seem to understand that there are stock roms and custom roms: not entirely sure what the difference is, but as long as I can get a stable (ideally the newest) version I am happy. I had a look around but couldn't find what I need...perhaps because I am not entirely sure myself what I need. Could I ask for some more help please?
thanks

There are modified stock roms, based on the official Samsung releases but with a moded theme and some tweaks, they are also called custom roms. The development section contains also pure AOSP roms, based on the android open source project with the AOSP look and speed without OEM content.
It's up to you what you choose, both versions can be stable. The AOSP is based on the latest google release, named jellybean 4.2.1. Samsung stopped the development at 2.3.6, named gingerbread.
Take a closer look at the rom threads and try to build your own opinion with the users feedback.
