[REQ] MTD based touchwiz kernel - Vibrant Android Development

Is there any way for someone to cook up an MTD kernel for touchwiz?
I've seen kernels like this built in the Epic 4G forums and I think a kernel like this would be very beneficial to our vibrants.
1. No lagfix required
2. seamless switching between touchwiz and CM7/MIUI (No odin, EVER)
3. Possibly dual OS kernels (like how siyah kernel on the SGS2 can work on samsung and AOSP)
I believe we would only need a kernel, flashing a BML rom over MTD then flashing the MTD kernel to let the thing work.

[Q] Kernel Question. Speedmod vs Voodoo.

I have been out of the scene for a couple of weeks and now I am noticing that most custom ROMs are no longer using the speedmod kernels. What have I missed? Why are ROM cookers flocking back to VOODOO?
i'd also like to know what the advantages of one over the other are
me too. they all in general have the same tweaks
From what I understand the speedmod is just a kernel upgrade, voodoo changes the partitions to ext4 which is faster.....
I think both using ext4...but voodoo sounds cooler

[Q] kernel flashing for what reason?

Hi,
for what reason do I a kernel flash? Are the rom included kernels better then a lonestanding once? can I flash any kernal to any rom?
what is the benifit of flashing an other kernel then the once ued in the rom?
thanks
When you change the kernel you choose a better kernel then stock.
They are more tweaked and habeas more support fir different things.
**Using my own JPX kernel, z4mod, 345MB Ram and ext2 filesystem**
- Different file system (better battery life) (I'm still experimenting with finding the right one)
- Access to the kernel allows you to use the led backlights on the buttons for notifications.
Those are currently the main reasons why I flash diff kernels.
You can have direct acces to one of the most advance lag fixes around(voodoo) better performance ,overclocking ,color correction for ur display, more user accessable ram and so on

Good question.
Samsung open-sources their released ROMs from time to time and many of the "kernel-hackers" (I'd call them plain hackers, what's with the prefix?) here utilize it to add/provide features and fix bugs (bugs are overlooked by people, its normal).
For instance, SpeedMods' kernel provides an Overclocking support for your Phone's CPU, if you want that extra juice. Likewise, Voodoo provides a set of visual enhancements among other things.
HTH
Another important reason is to regain 2e recovery if you lost it after flashing a stock firmware. This assumes the kernel you choose includes this feature
Fine, thank you all!

[Q] Kernels and Modems

I am in the process of developing a ROM, and I would like to know what kernel options I have if I am using a 2.3.5 Gingerbread (JVT) based ROM
If you're building a ROM you should know what you're doing, including what is compatible with what base your building from...
Kernels (in no particular order):
Xcal
Talon
Darkcore
Sephamore
Any I9000 modem will work, jk4 is the "go to" as it seems to work the best for the most users.
now, go play and enjoy your bootloop
Thank you, I just had some confusion with which kernels and modems were compatible with each other.
I will enjoy every bootloop until my ROM is done!

[Q] Kernel Compatibility Question GB KK1

I recently flashed my Captivate (I897) to stock leaked 2.3.5 I897UCKK1
I am trying to understand what my options are for rooting to regain wifi tethering capability. Unfortunately, I really don't understand the kernel interaction and the potential compatibility issues. Normally, I understand I just need to stay on a kernel that was sourced from the same version (in this case KK1).
Anyway, I am hoping for some information on what kernels might be OK to use with my current ROM. My wish list in a kernel at this point would be BLN, EXT4 Lagfix (Voodoo or new CWM) and Root. From reading, it sounds like there is a lot more support for KK4.. Maybe I need to move to a KK4 ROM as well?
Thank in advance for not flaming the noob (I hope)

I suspect you're right. KK4 does have a good following since it is the newest leak, and there are several KK4 based ROMs out there in active development that support lagfix.
You won't find BLN on any i897 ROMs, though. There's no source code from Samsung so there is no way for the devs to add it in. For that, you would need to use an i9000 ROM or a 2.2 i897 ROM.
Thank you!

I9000 ICS Kernel and Modem

I'm considering switching to ICS, but I'm wondering is there an ICS kernel that is based on I9000 sources? Like how we have JVU, JW1, etc. I9000 kernels? It seems that the most popular is Glitch, but Glitch is I897.
I also need a modem for ICS that doesn't give me the roaming message since I'm on Fido. Since modem works with the kernel, this means that if there are no I9000 based ICS kernels, then I can't use a I9000 modem.
glitch (and all cm kernels) are reoriented from the I9000 to work properly with the I897, they aren't based off of captivate anything, so you HAVE to use an I9000 modem, if you look all the modems posted in an aosp format are I9000
I'm on glitch with jk4
And also your phone wouldn't work quite normally if you flashed a real i9000 kernel
Sent from my CM9 ICS i897 Captivate
And you have to use the ones made for cm7. The cwm package has a different install script.
