Heyo N1 community!
So, after much deliberation, I dropped some cash on newegg for the first nexus experience...I also just needed a good backup phone.
That said, I'm probably going to be spending a lot more time here than in the Atrix forums as I'm REALLY liking the N1...and MIUI (...I'm kind of in love).
All this said, I had a couple questions about things I should be wary of...and just am not familiar with.
1. Blackrose
-From what I understand, due to the small ROM capacity, this is used to repartition the N1 to accommodate larger ROMs. I also see something about a custom HBOOT being involved. I don't really know what that is, though. Do most ROMs need this now? I was lucky enough to flash MIUI which apparently doesn't require blackrose. Granted, I don't know any of the implications of Blackrose. Is it reversible? Does it limit you in any way if you're on it?
2. Kernels
-Back on the Captivate, I feel like it was the roaring '50s with kernels. You could flash whichever kernel you wanted on whatever ROM you wanted...it was all about preference. With the Atrix, it's the opposite...doesn't help that there's basically only 1 stable kernel either. That said, I flashed the latest (non-ICS) MIUI and it looks like it comes with a slightly dated CM7 kernel- is this a big deal? Should I look to update it to something more recent/stable/etc? Or are kernels pretty specific as to ROM compatibility?
3. Radios
-Pretty much same situation with the kernels. I want to be careful because I know the N1 shipped for a couple different carriers, T-Mo and AT&T at the forefront. Now, I'm on AT&T, but the box my N1 came in is marked for Vodafone UK. As I understand it, Vodafone's freq's are the same as T-Mo's, right? Is there any difference between my "vodafone" N1 and one designed to work with T-Mo, AT&T, or any others?
4. Hardware issues/life expectancy/replacement options
-First and foremost, I'm still confused as to whether Nexus 1's are even still being manufactured. I heard somewhere that some UK carriers still sell them (obviously Google stopped doing it direct awhile ago). To me, it's the kinda thing where, in all honesty, I'd love to use the N1 as my EDC forever- the screen size is perfect for me, the Dev community is MASSIVE and very experienced, and the phone is simply iconic. That said, though, I'm wondering how long it'll be until things start to bite it and I have to look for a replacement...and if I'll even be able to find one. Alternatively, I've seen a lot of people say that HTC has been pretty forgiving about replacing busted power buttons and the like. Besides the power button, though, is there anything else I should be keeping an eye on?
Lastly, I want to thank all the Devs who've contributed. Poking around through the dev section gave me an overwhelming sense sense of options, and the conversation here seems a bit more mature than over in the Atrix forums ("WHEN WILL WE HAVE CM7/CM9?!" was almost every other thread...and the poor devs got TORN UP trying to contribute what they could).
Sorry if I blinded anybody with all the writing, but I appreciate any advice or input you can give me.
1. You don't need Blackrose for MIUI. Use A2SD and partition your SD card. How? Search. Help - Wiki link is in my signature.
2. You don't need to switch from default MIUI kernel, unless you want to overclock.
3. Doesn't matter, as long as you're on one of the Gingerbread radios. Any of the latest will be good enough. No difference in baseband builds between different N1 models.
4. You're going to eat a lot of pain with screen touch craziness, which is the most painful part of this phone. The second most painful part is sub-par GPU, but unless you game a lot, you won't notice it - MIUI is smooth. So I'm really in doubt you'll want to keep this phone for a long time. In any case, press the power button gently and closer to the inside of the phone, and avoid pressing it as much as you can (use ROMs with trackball wake and screen lock widget).

Thanks for the tip. It occurs to me that I jumped the gun and flashed a ROM before I should have- not that anything bad has happened. Just thinking I'll probably go round two here shortly once I learn all the ins and outs (like Apps2SD...and popping in an SD that bigger than the included 4GB one to make it worthwhile). Thanks for the tips bro.

Not worried about OCing. UVing might be nice...but I'm thinking unnecessary for battery life- First discharge gave me 1 day 12 hours after WHALE-HEAVY use...and even then I still had 20% left.
This is something I'm actually in awe regarding.

Awesome. Now, real quick- did MIUI include a GB radio upon flashing it? I haven't flashed one specifically yet...should I head over to the Kernel/Radio thread and pick one out? Also, just to clarify/double-check, you're saying that a T-Mo N1 = Vodafone UK N1 etc etc? Same hardware and everything? (Obviously excluding N1's designed for AT&T's freq's?)

Ha! Yep, I've definitely gotten some odd touches from the screen even after my little time with it. I've found I am ALWAYS hitting the home button...or the area that REGISTERS as the home button...whenever I go to press the space bar when typing. Quite possible it's due to having only used Android phones w/ larger, 4" screens...so I'm used to "reaching down farther" for the space bar, so to speak. And about trackball/volume wake & screenlock widget- already on it, ha! Not only is it a lot more convenient, but I figured it's something I should get used to in light of the power button's frailty.
It occurs to me- how wiggly is the trackball supposed to be? When I got my phone and started playing with it, I noticed a slight amount of give before it'd click (to select). Is this normal? While it always returns to it's normal amount of...portruding (sp?)/portrusion, should there be NO give before it clicks? Thanks for the input.
Also...about the screen...are there any mods/hacks to make it more accurate/less glitchy? Fix multitouch snapping? Etc?
Lastly, I'd always rock the V6 supercharger script on my Atrix. Now that I'm on MIUI, do they have it baked in? If not, is it compatible? Does it make a difference?
Thanks for the info/input so far bro I really appreciate it.

No rom should include a radio, and as a general rule you should always flash radios from fastboot to avoid any problems.

Hmm...gotcha. Just wondering (as I didn't mess w/ fastboot until the Atrix- all Captivate radios were just flashed in recovery), what problems could arise from non-fastboot flashes? And how likely is this? Thanks for the info btw.
Update:
Well so I quickly checked the Radio thread, specifically the newest one (from a Korean update?).
Read and read and read and read before doing anything...then went and checked my phone only to find out the baseband version in my setting>about phone matches that of the newest one: 5.12.00.08. Don't know what difference it makes, but I have a "U" halfway through instead of an "H." So, two possibilities: Either my phone shipped with it (Odd as it's a Korea update?), or it was included in the ROM. Either way, I haven't noticed any issues, and I figure I'll leave it be.
Thanks again for the info though fellas.
I know your questions probably have been answered but I'll give it a shot:
1 - Blackrose will repartition the N1's partitions regarding cache, data, and such. If you want MIUI or pretty much any Gingerbread ROM you most likely 99.9% don't need Blackrose or a custom partition layout. Only certain ICS ROMs require Blackrose. The custom HBOOT you are referring to is Blackrose and the custom partition sizes. There are no limits if you are on Blackrose, and you can always get rid of it just as easy as installing it. Getting rid of Blackrose HBOOT will also refer you back to the stock partition layouts, if you made any changes while on Blackrose.
2 - There are a rather great deal of kernels for the N1 out there. I can think of at least 5 main ones, such as Wilmonds, IR's, and many more. Most will work with any ROM, such as CM or MIUI. But as always, backup before you flash. As for need, you don't really need to flash a custom kernel yet it can help. Some kernels boast improving animations and performance while others try to boast battery saving. Just check out the comments of each kernel's thread for a true evaluation.
3 - As for radios, flashing is not really that important. Most N1's are on 5.08 version which is the latest release for the US; all be it that is is a year or so old. There is a newer 5.12 radio released in Korea but there is no need to flash/install it. Some say connection is better but there is no difference if you are in the US. No ROM requires a certain radio.
4 - I had my N1 for almost 2 years with absolutely no issue with any buttons. I do hear that some have issues with the power button however. I guess it depends how well you take care of your device. I have dropped my phone very rarely and I take pretty good care of it. No complaints here.
Hope this helped you. And welcome to the N1 community! Any other questions feel free to ask!

Awesome info bro! Your explanation of Blackrose was especially concise, simple, and informative. Thanks for the kernel advice too! I appreciate it man!
Hey fellas, I hate to double post in the interest of bumping, but there are still a couple questions I'm still wondering about, and I'd rather bumprez than make another/2/3 different threads about each question.
The info you've given me so far has been AWESOME, and I'd appreciate any more input you might have.
Thanks in advance fellas.
What are the remaining questions?
Can't go wrong with Nexus One. Any weakness in memory can be dealt with through blackrose and a2sd. Hardware issues are minimal and even potential power switch problem is easily repaired.

Also, I'm wondering about the AMOLED vs SLCD differences- something I don't think I've asked about yet.
Basically, regarding any and all facets of a screen- what are the differences between the AMOLED and the SLCD hardware?
And to reiterate- I'm talking about any kind of difference regarding anything, whether it's vibrancy, clarity, powerdraw, touch-sensitivity/accuracy...anything at all.
Lastly, regarding Blackrose:
So, Androidity3000 gave me a great cliff's notes on Blackrose, but I want to make sure- If I flash Blackrose (which is a custom HBOOT that reconfigures the partition sizes so as to avoid space-constraint issues?) can I just keep that all the time? Can certain ROMs NOT be flashed if I'm running Blackrose? Also, does Blackrose automatically decide the sizes of the new partitions, or do I have to configure the sizes myself? If so, are different configurations better, and why?
Thanks for all the good info and patience so far, breauxs. I appreciate it.
Trackball has some free movement, what you describe seems normal.
I've expressed my opinion on all kinds of "magical" scripts at some other point in time. Look at the free memory you have (which is probably >100MB at any given point in time), and think - do you need anything?
SLCD and AMOLED look a bit different. If you search the forum and Google, I bet you find enough examples and explanations. The question seems way too lazy.
Read the Blackrose thread to understand more, what it is and what it does. Also too lazy of a question.
I just picked up a N1 off ebay. It is in almost new condition got it for $155.00. I moving over from a mytouch 3g fender so the n1 is much better, i love it. This post helped me out alot. I've always wanted the n1 I've had my mytouch since it came out

I know this question has been asked like a bajabber 2395293 millions times.
But my point is, is losing official OTA updates from Google worth the rooting?
EG: When Flash 10.xx arrives and the Nexus lands some major updates, what are the chances that rooted users get screwed over?
Considering that OTA updates get incorporated into custom ROMs anyway (and usually before they're officially out), it's not like you will be missing out on anything.
This is best asked in Q&A. It all comes down to personal preference. We can't tell you what you should do.

maybe you should first post in the correct sub-forum?
and we dont lose any good things that come from those updates. Our beloved chefs will cook them right in along with their own nice extras.
All OTA updates will be in our custom ROMS.

Heh. Oops. My bad. Sorry for posting in the wrong section. 2am and I've been boggling it over and over bout rooting vs official ota updates. And also about security issues. Not sure if rooting makes the N1 more vulnerable or not...
Mod: Please move this to appropriate section, thanks. =)

I'm sure you've done all your research, considering this is your first post and you joined this month....
Rooting opens you up to Undervolting to save battery, Tethering, Apps unavailable to non-rooted devices, some really great themes, and more... To say that A2SD is the only benefit is rather insulting to our faithful Devs...
Heck... My main reason to root was to leave behind the look of the stock N1. It's a great device and all, but the UI certainly looks better w/ a lil' NexTheme 1.9 action.
Oh yeah... And Rooting lets you show off your phone via SS's. That's always quite enjoyable imo.

What exactly will you see as a "point".. honestly trackball colors, and Desire ROMs are enough to convince me to root. Along with unlocking the extra RAM.. and then other benefits that are included with root access. Such as themes, overclocking, and what not, there already seems to be enough reasons to become a superuser.
Just root it already, unless it's above you tech level; then don't. My nexus is a beast running Cyanogen's latest mod, you may be skeptical about claims that the phone can perform snappier, but it's all true and after experiencing the light I will and can never go back to a stock rom. Not to mention the added functionality, trackball colors and frequent new updates and modifications. You know what to do .
Do it....... Dooooooo ittttttttt!!!!!!!!!!

Good call! Forgot all about the Trackball... Can't use Desire due to fail Bluetooth in the car... But I'm happy enough on Stock Launcher w/ CM5041. Extra RAM as well..
People who don't root, seriously don't know what they're missing. And it'll only get better.
And heck... What's the negative? Oh no?!!? Warranty issues. I'll take the extra fun n games for that risk.
Hehe. I already rooted like 10 mins after asking this question. But everyone who rooted is right.
There's so much more monsterifficness beneath the stock. Almost as if Google already knew how extreme it would be and deliberately tempted us to root by setting it below maximum potential.
Can't wait to see what the Nexus can continue to do with awesome the awesome modders here!! =)
I'm waiting for the next OTA update before I start playing around with root and ROMS. Customization looks fun but I want to see what performance increases Google can bring after updating to the new kernel for full RAM (hopefully they do this next update anyway). Probably won't be any different than what's out now, but the only thing that I'd really want is HTC music and Modaco's mod is still in the alpha stages.
Rooting is definately a good move, but it is not for everyone, i would suggest against people egging others on to root. Rather, direct them to the available information on the benefits and dangers of rooting, and let them decide.

Uh... most custom ROMs now run on .32 or .33 kernels. As in, more RAM. Loooots of RAM. (I have about 191 MB free on a fresh boot, etc.) Paul's Desire ROM is only still in alpha because bluetooth doesn't quite work, but otherwise it's very functional and pretty well-optimized.

I know that current custom ROMs already have a big performance boost (RAM) from the current stock. I believe that ROMs also have .apks that are optimized and probably a bit zippier than unmodified ones. I only meant that if the next OTA with the new kernel gives enough of a performance boost, then custom ROMs won't be for me (until much later in the game anyway).
Whats stopping me are the touchscreen issues,,, no one can still definitively say if it's HW or SW. I need to retain the option to send it in for a warranty swap if it gets worse.

I would consider pointless and a waste of the warranty. There aren't a lot of mods in the dev section that will work on a stock (non-custom rom), so you wouldn't really be gaining anything there.

Sorry man, just saw that I said would work, what I meant was wouldn't work. A lot of the mods are built from source code that isn't compatible with stock ROMs.
Themes, Trackball Notification colors, Trackball Wake, Updated Launcher... Those are a few I can think of, off the top of my head.
Oh oh, you can install "WaveSecure" as a System application. Thus making it more difficult to remove from the phone. (Can't just go visit the market to remove )
Edit:
Screenshots via ShootMe, N1 Torch (Hey... I did have to use this when my workplace hallways were lacking power... Otherwise I'd consider it a novelty)
Why do you not want a custom ROM? if you are worried about the UI, cyanogen mod is identical to the stock UI (minus a few colour changes), but adds a whole lot more functionality and memory. The only advantage i can see having a rooted phone with stock over cyanogen is that you will still recieve OTA updates.

... of which are usually leaked well beforehand and integrated into a ROM, before the official OTA goes out.
Personally, it was the CyanogenROM that made the risk of rooting worth it. There's plenty of great apps and utils out there that require root, but none (even cumulatively) worth risking $530 to get.
If you're not interested in the ROMs, then take the blue pill.
being able to push the track ball to turn the phone on was plenty reason for me ;o
The decision to root was a hard one for me also, but let me go down the reasons why I loved that I did it.
1) Auto-Rotating launcher. Landscape view is pretty friggin sweet. Plus all my iphone friends get so jelous when I want to show them something so i just flip my phone and my screen rotates 180 degrees. Coolest thing ever...
2) Colored trackball notifications. I don't know about you, but i like that i know what a notification is before i ever take the time to turn the screen on.
3) SetCPU. I made a profile so that when my screen is off, my processor runs slower, thus giving me more battery life.
4) N1 Torch. Turns the N1 into a great flash light.
5) Launcher with shortcuts. I didn't really have a problem with the dots, but having 4 shortcuts to apps there so that they are on every homescreen is very nice.
6) I now have a black notification bar at the top rather than a grey one. This makes the phone alot sexier...
7) Modifcations to HTC_IME. I love the transparent background. This only words if clicker.apk and htc_ime.apk are in the system/app/ folder which you can only modifiy with root access.
8) nandroid backup. very nice.
9) Wake screen on trackball push. Good little shortcut which makes things a little easier.
10) *most important reason* The overall speed of my phone is so much faster... On the stock rom is was plenty fast and i had no complaints, but now it is even more so. The bakedgoods rom is like putting a supercharger in your phone.
The decision to root was a hard one for me, but looking back, I have only 1 regret. Not doing it sooner

only reason 10 requires a custom rom.
WiFi TETHERING!!!!!!!
apps on the sd. I still ran out if memory installing the apps I use regularly. That is the main reason for me. Enabling all the phones memory was a big reason too. Plus who needs a warranty with insurance?
if you have no interest in custom ROMS, i think it would be a waste of warranty... unless you want to install any apps which require root access (like N1 Torch)... or the several modded/developed system apps that require rw access to the system partition which you can only get using insecure boot... so make ur choice... the N1 stock is great... the N1 cooked... wayyy better than the best!!!
Its in my sig now
I think its funny how people complained that the MT3g, cliq...yadda yadda didnt have enough speed..SO they put in a snapdragon...and people are still not happy. Voiding your warranty is certainly good enough to keep me from rooting my phone for a flashlight, or a trackball color change...Whoop dee doo. When we rooted the mytouch...etc, they had legit reasons. Mutli touch, speed, space saver, cool themes, and tether. They only thing that the nexus doesnt have now is tether. So In due time I will def go back to the rooting field, but not at the cost of voiding my warranty.
But then again the HTC warranty is a joke. I am not sending you my phone and waiting for you to fix a problem that shouldn't have been there in the first place, then wait for you to send it back. Screw that, I would rather pay my deductible and get a refurb.
Contradicting..
But everyone has their own opionon. Oh and just an FYI, from experience HTC can tell if its been rooted

Yes, HTC is smart and like any other company, would like to avoid warranty claims. So I believe they do check every phone to make sure it's not rooted.
I see you point, but I just don't quite agreed with it... but hey, that's my opinion vs. yours and no one's gonna win this battle ;-p).0 But quite frankly, I don't think I'd enjoy my N1 half as much if it was not rooted... I like the stuff Cyanogen ,Enomther, Paul & the other amazing devs have done... I like to fiddle around with the phone... try out new stuff... experiment... the same thing I would do with any linux box... even did it on the Motorola Linux phone I previously had...
So it all boils down to opinion... if you like to fiddle around, root it... if you like the mods, root it... else stick with stock...

I love to expiriment and root just not this early.
just purchased a sprint htc hero im wondering what are the advantages or disadvantages on changing the roms and can someone help me in chosing and installing a new rom
Themes. Tethering. Improve battery life and signal. Improve overall speed. New 2.1 features. And VARIETY! Just to name a few...
The advantages are many...it's fun to see what other people come up with, exciting to find new features, cool to check out many different awesome themes....
Disavantages....on occasion you have to wipe going from one rom to the next (but that can be fun too)
.....what ROM to choose, that is going to be up to you and what you like in a ROM....from all the ones you test out on your HERO!!!!
Do some reading and ROM searches my friend, you'll be surprised at all the good stuff you find
And all the info you'll need is at the top of the forum.
Here -http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=618874
And here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=618867
No one can help you chose a rom, it's a personal choice and frankly there are so many to chose from you'll get at least 5 different answers from 10 people.
The advantages are you will get much better performance out of your device and unlock potential that the average person would never know exists. Sprint bogs the thing down with so much crap you would be AMAZED at how much better it will operate when it's all cleaned up Also you can do things like wifi tether (true) and enable the built in light saber (false)
The disadvantage is learning about this stuff and doing it for yourself is so fascinating and fun if you're not careful it will quickly take over every aspect of your life (true)
There are plenty of guides from getting started for total noobs to things like compiling kernel from source code. Check out the guides wiki at the top of the forum, it' one of the stickies. First thing you will do is "root" and backup your phone, then you're pretty much good to do whatever you want and as long as you don't flash a GSM rom on your CDMA hero anything you do after you make a nandroid backup is reversible.
Welcome to xda, have fun!
*edit- LOL, there's a few of us up late tonight I see!
I finally decided to use custom ROM because I got sick of waiting for Sprint to release 2.1 update. There is all sorts of software out now that just runs on 2.1, Google Navigate was the big one for me.
Since I upgraded, there has been other things, speed, the ability to install a virtually unlimited set of apps, live wallpapers, swype keyboard, these are the big things i Like. Edit: Oh and wifi tethering is huge!!
There are some problems right now, you cant have everything at once. and it will take some time playing around to get what works best for you.
One other thing to consider is that when Sprint rolls out the 2.1 update over the air, you may lose the ability to root your phone. You can root now, and when the update comes out, someone here will make a rom from it and that way you will guarantee the ability to have root and still have latest stock sprint/htc software.

Agreed, there are several methods to rooting but you cant go wrong doing it the old fashioned way. You get some great exposure to the inside of your phone and TTG wrote a very good guide. Just follow the steps.
Also in that guide he has a link to the 1.5.2 recovery image, thats a little outdated, you want RA's 1.6.2 found HERE, scroll about 2/3 down the page and choose one of the 4, doesn't matter which, the only difference in them is cosmetic.

I have my HTC Vogue Touch flashed to android... Just foud out I have a free upgrade from Sprint and thinking about the HTC Hero..
doing some research before I get it as I love customizing this stuff and there looks to be plenty of ROMs here...
my first question being: aside from apps2sd what is the main reason for booting these ROMs? It even looks like the camera doesn't work in many of them. (which surprised me considering the phone is droid - stock)..
second question: I can see the rooting guides but not how to flash the HERo to any of these ROMs.. or am I missing something here?
Thanks..

get the evo or wait for the galaxy s pro
The Hero is still a worthy phone.
thanks for the advice..
an explanation as to why would be nice
and an answer to my other inquiries as well if possible..
i do love my hero but if i had an upgrade right now i wouldnt go to a "last gen" phone
evo is a step up from the hero in every spec and is 4G!!!!!
the samsung galaxy will be very comparable to the evo but seems a little faster on the processing side
most of these roms are 2.1 which is complete exept for a couple bugs here and there. The roms that are dev'ing are the 2.2 roms which needs to be made from the ground up.

the custom roms are faster/better than the sprint rom.
the camera works in all the roms as far as i know? there was a time when the camera didn't work because HTC were being Dbags and withholding the kernel source, but toast solved that problem. the only rom atm without camera AFAIK is the froyo dev build.

question 1. besides apps2sd the main reason for booting roms is looks and customization in my oppinion. you can change around the keyboard the lock screen the menu options even remove the terrible bloatware included on the phone. plus an upside is speed - remove the files eating all your battery life and take that battery life and put it to overclocking the cpu.
as for the camera i don't know what you are talking about. almost every rom i've installed has the camera working correctly. sometimes a file is removed to make the phone run faster and the camera doesn't work but most of the times the camera is fixed pretty fast.
question 2. rooting your phone gives you access to files on your phone otherwise not able to delete. i.e. bloatware. by rooting your phone you can remove these files or adjust them how you want. now the ROM is a customization of android x.x that you flash to your hero that otherpeople have customized themselves. like removing the bloatware for you or using a custom kernel to make your phone run faster. or just changing around the entire look of android.
The Hero is a fantastic phone and can do many things. i would say upgrade and don't look back. but if you want a snapdragon CPU get the Evo. which is also an awesome phone. (but quite a bit more expensive)

totally ignore the last part. Samsung is terrible also am I crazy or doesn't need to be in a different section?
I see someone else posted about the camera..
Every single current rom we have, has a working camera. Aside from froyo 2.2, that hasnt been publicly released yet (it will soon though).
And rom currently up-to-date within the past month, should have everything working. You might run in to a few bugs, but most are user errors or can be simply fixed.
The hero is still a great phone with many months left in it. The Evo though is still the #1 choice, and i would get one if i could.
And person above me.. No you are not crazy. Should be in general section or Q & A

both of these statements are completely true.
the Hero is actually quite awesome, lots of potential in it still, and my guess is the 2.2 will run on it just swimmingly.
that being said... if you can get one cheap, do it! But frankly, if you have upgrade credit coming to you, use it on a newer gen phone... or I would anyway. sadly, there will be less ROMs/mods/community/whathaveyou for it, balanced by a sense of adventure exploring new territory with other ROMflash addicts and ROMcookers!

still a bit confused. probably will make more sense once I get the phone.
for instance i'm looking at this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583291
point me to another one if there is something better...
I assume I put the ROMs on the SD card (andboot folder maybe? thats what it was on my vogue) and going into recovery console to select the "flash update.zip" will wipe the phone and install the custom ROM?
also, where can I gain clarification on these new acronyms to me such as JIT?
I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually.. Afterall, I am a certified MS Server Admin and CCNA network admin.. hhaha
thanks for your help. great community here. hopefully i'll be sticking around.

that guide is old.
THIS ONE
will work for 2.1 which is what the hero has now.
you can google JIT. google google google. all the questions have been answered at some point or another, its better to read someone's post than make a new post about the same thing thousands of other people have already asked about.
Ok found it. At first all I got were links to roms with JIT on it.
So after rooting, I basically get back into the recovery console and select flash from zip sdcard? Heck of alot easier than the Vogue I tell you that...
Thanks for the link
Another edit: Do the custom roms have multiple home page screens you can scroll to? On my vogue 1.6 droid I have like 5 home screens I can put shortcuts on. I just watched a HTC hero video on sprint and on the customizing video it didn't look like that was there.
I'm not saying the Hero isn't a good phone.. I'm saying if you have an upgrade, get the Evo or you'll be upset later. The phone is so much faster... 4g.. double cameras..big screen...
Bad better life, and it's a brick. I wouldn't use an upgrade on an old gen phone.
I just become a Sprint Preferred or whatever.. by having a plan over $70 and paying on time for 6 months.. I get my free upgrade in February. I definitely won't even consider the Evo.. I'll be looking at the next big thing.

there are 7 screens you can put apps and widgets on. 1 home then 3 to the left and right.
Remember the movie Mad Max? Or was it the Road Warrior? It doesn't matter. The quote is still valid.
Speed is a question of money. How fast can you afford to go?
If you can afford it, get the Evo. If you want a cheaper, yet still awe phone, get the Hero. Then use your savings for a bigger SDHC card and Bluetooth headphones and other coolness.
I agree that the phone has a lot left in it, but a lot of devs from several phones have jumped shipped to the Evo. I'm sticking with my Hero for another year atleast, unless a real good deal comes up.
If you want to save money I would get ther Hero as it it a lot cheaper than the Evo and you will also save the $10 extra a month. That and the Evo is too damn big. To me it was uncomfortable to hold and use with one hand.
Not only can you flash /install new roms, but with a little research you can mod the rom your self and theme it how you want. Also wireless tether is awesome and the Overclocking and Undervolting is making the phone better and faster.
Ok so I spent a few days trolling.
Looks like I'm going to have to flash the old RUU since I did the 2.1 update, then follow guide, then the custom ROM.
Question though, I'm stuck on picking one: Some are very nicely featured but I don't like the default look on any of them or the themes available in a 2nd/3rd post of the ROMs thread; generically speaking, is any themes compatible with any ROM? For instance, the Cyanogen mods you can Google to dark corners of the internet...
Hi,
I have an ASUS TF701T (K00C) Tablet, with Jelly Bean v4.3.
It is Rooted and has CWM Recovery installed.
The SETTINGS >> ABOUT screen reads as follows:
Kernel Version:
3.4.57-g15e4406
[email protected] #1
Build Number:
JSS1SJ.US_epad-1.0.26.1.7.20131108020115_2013.10210002
I am not a developer, nor a programmer, so I need like a file (Zip, or whatever) and a method to install it.
Pershoot gave me this link:
https://github.com/pershoot/android_kernel_asus_tf701t
...but I can't make any sense of it. I don't know what all of those files are.
I can follow instructions. I've Rooted and installed Recovery on a number of devices and Kernels on a couple of them as well. But there was always a file and instructions. Like "Install from Zip" in Recovery, or sideloading with ADB (command line provided).
Can anyone please help me? I would really love to get this done!
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!!

I don't want to build my own kernel. That was the point of my post.
Not everyone wants to build everything they use from scratch. That's why Dominos & Dell are both so succesful.
There are only 3 custom roms out there for this device and they use the CM11 kernel or repacked stock kernel.
Nobody has released a custom kernel for this tablet, so if you want an OC kernel, you will HAVE to build it yourself.
Or be patient....
BTW, before you install any custom software you should upgrade to the .18 bootloader. Each of the 3 custom Roms requires it and if somebody builds a custom kernel it will most likely be designed to run with the latest bootloader and those roms.

Tbh I don't think this device needs much OC right now and there is no way of doing it without rebuilding the kernel. I have no idea how to add OC to the source other than look at how _that did it using clemsyn's hack. That may not even work.
I wouldn't count on it soon. It's not high priority right now.

Okay, I don't know what a ".18 Bootloader" means, but like I said, I am not a programmer by any means. I can follow instructions, ya know?
Let me tell you my experience...
I have overclocked four devices in the past. In each instance, it was a very simple procedure, laid out step by step by whomever made it available. I had used both Pershoots Kernels and one called an "A1", for my old Glxy Tab 10.1".
It was only a few steps. And I didn't do it as part of a ROM or anything. In fact, in every case (except with my Note 2), I ran the Factory ROM on each device, Rooted.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking anyones efforts in creating ROMs. Everyone likes what they like. For me, I like TouchWiz and I like the Asus unterface (whatever it's called) and I do not want to change them. Besides having to wipe my device every time I update a custom ROM, which I don't have to do with the Factory ROM, as it will always upgrade without wiping my data, it's a lot of work to to the next Android, without using another custom ROM. With the Factory ROM, I can unroot and even get the factory recovery back in place if I need to and away I go!
Besides this, if I use a cutom ROM and let's say then KitKat is available for my device, what if only one developer(s) has put out a custom ROM with KitKat for me and I do not like their ROM? With the Factory ROM, I can update and then I can teak this and that, to get the experience I want, without cutting off the factory update channel.
Anyway, that's my take and my experience. You may completely disagree with all of it. <lol>
So the bottom line is, I was hoping to get just a flashable Kernel to add to my Factory ROM (Rooted) and a way to install it and that's it.
To the next fellow that responded, to me, it does need overclocking. Mine runs very slow quite often. Slower than my old Galaxy Tab 10.1" a lot of the time. The TF700T I had a while back would blow this thing's doors off!
But I blame the Jelly Bean 4.3 version of Android, because I know what this thing should be able to do and I have read a lot of speed complaints across devices with JB 4.3.
And don't you dare disagree! I choose to believe this, because if you burst that bubble on me, I'll be running down the street screaming, while pulling my hair out! Hahaha!
Thanks to both of you for responding to my post and letting me know what the current situation is. I appreciate you taking the time to do that for me.

I am going to disagree and also say you have something wrong with your device. Out of the box the TF701 is one of the fastest android devices out there. Once you put a custom ROM on it it is even faster. And that is with out over clocking. Right now the CPU is not the bottle neck trust me.
The fact that you said your TF700 blows it out of the water indicates there is something seriously wrong. Go and run some benchmarks and give us some evidence where it is slow and maybe we can help you.
BTW I made a stock rooted ROM if you want to try messing.
Also are you using a microsd card. Maybe that is causing your issues. It's happened to a lot of others. Try removing it.
If I'm not mistaken, even if u unlock and install custom ROM, u can STILL return to stock and apply ota updates from Asus as they are released. So ur not cutting ur channel to getting latest stock updates. U just need to install stock firmware, and then place latest Asus firmware (ex: KitKat) in root of SD and reboot. U will update to the latest stock firmware. The only difference is that u won't receive the ota AUTOMATICALLY to us device rather u manually install it. Which is good as u won't have to WAIT for Asus to push the ota to ur device.
As for speeds, don't even compare the tf700 to tf701. If ur is running slow than ur tf700, then u SERIOUSLY have problems with ur device. Best way to find out is try running benchmarks and compare scores to tf700.

What benchmark do you use? I have the Pay version of that one that starts with a "Q"? Quadrant, or something like that.
I do have an External SD Card installed, but I always do, so it's apples and apples, ya know?
I do have a very fast SD Card, one of those UHC-10's, or something to that effect. I think it's supposed to be the fastest one out there right now.
I've actually been pretty fortunate when it comes to SD Cards. My devices have always run exactly the same, with or without them installed.
As for this device, I was originally running it without one. Had to wait for them to arrive. But again, I noticed no difference in how it performs.
My biggest slowdowns are waiting for the screen to draw and for a file operation to start, etc., et al. And I have even installed an SD booster, which did smooth it out pretty well, compared to what it was, but it's still not so fast.
But I get what you're saying. I ran it ithout modifications at first and it had JB 4.1.2 at first (mine did not come with 4.3) and it ran great! But once I installed JB 4.3, well, that pretty much ended my daily cherring that I was doin in the direction of my Tablet.
As for speed, I know that you're right about custom ROMs, especially with the CM ROMs. I know they're wicked fast!
But remember my friend, I didn't mention speed when I discussed custom ROMs.
My choice to stay with the Factory ROM, has nothing to do with speed. I stay with it only for the reason that I mentioned.
I appreciate your offer of help. I really do! And I would have provided a benchmark, but I wasn't sure which one you'd find acceptable.
Oh, I remember the name now! Quadrant!
Will that one do? I personally do not think it will reflect what I'm seeing though. Plus, it's not just me. As I said, I read about this across devices and specifically regarding the TF701T, so I don't think I'm crazy.
Also, with no disrespect intended, if you're running a "really fast" custm ROM, then you can't really tell me how mine's doing, because it would be apples and oranges, ya know?
But I am certainly willing to try stuff with you, no problem! And thanks a bunch for wanting to do so!!!

I would bet you are mixing up reports about the TF700 with the TF701. I am following quite a few forums and threads on both devices and nobody, ever complained about the 701 being slow - except you of course
I was running it on stock until about 2 months ago and even then it was blazingly fast in everything: Downloads, browsing, file transfers, switching between apps - no hesitations whatsoever.
Face it: It's something YOU did. [emoji12][emoji56][emoji33]
Flash sbadgs's rooted Asus stock rom. It's pure stock - just cleaned up with few optimazations. You won't even notice the difference to pure stock - except exceptionally better performance of course.
And if you don't, it's time to wipe your data partition, re-install your apps slowly and find what's causing this beautiful machine to bog down.

Trust me I know how the stock ROM runs. In quadrant you should get 15,000+ which isn't slow. You'll also see from the breakdown that the CPU is not the bottle neck. Tweaked and customised you'll see 18,000
Do me a favour get rid of that SD software and remove the sdcard, reboot. Run quadrant. What do you get....?
Time for a factory reset?

Not confusing the two. I know what I'm typing on, my friend.
I personally do not even like custom ROMs based on the Factory ROM. You still have to wipe and install again when the new version comes out (if it does) and since that takes me 2-3 days of setup, I don't want to do that. And when, as I said, on my Note 2, I installed a custom ROM, it was also based on the Factory ROM and was v4.1.2, but when v4.3 came out, guess what? There would be no new ROM versions to replace the one I had, because the developer got rid of his Note 2, so that meant a wipe/reset and starting from scratch!
No with a straight Factory ROM, that would not be necessary when an update came out.
Again, I'm not knocking custom ROMs. In fact, the developer did one heck of a nice job with the one I installed on my Note 2! But I just do not wish to go through that and so, I left my Note 2 at v4.1.2 and even sold it with that custom ROM still installd on it (they knew everything, I didn't hide anything from the buyer and they liked it as it was).
You have to understand, that with settin up folders, installing my apps, which is about 375 of them and tweaking the settings in each and every one of them, as I'm going through them, Install/Tweak, Install/Tweak, etc., et al, it can easily take me 2-3 days of work to set up my device again, so Factory Resets do not get done to my devices! I fix problems, I don't erase them!
Anyway, I have been a "Computer/Electronics Tech" for 30 years and taught the stuff as well, so while I'm not a programmer and I'm not an Android "exoert", I do know what my eyes are looking at and I can follow instructions.
So I approached it logically, when it felt sluggish to me and before setting everything up on my Tablet, I did run benchmarks. And I did not have the SD Card installed in the slot yet, being well aware that they can cause performance issues.
And what I did to minimize any possible impact, was to buy the fastest performing Micro-SD Card out there and ran benchmarked both before and after it's installation and saw no impact from it, which surpised me a bit, but never-the-less, there was no impact on my device.
But here's teh thing that I must not have made clear; When I'm running a game or something, it runs great! It's the average little "always doing those things" sort of stuff that's sluggish. Like when you flip an app to the background and you're expecting the screen to redraw and show your icons/shortcuts/whatever you want to call them. Me? That's when I sit and wait. That's just one example.
As for custom ROMs, like I said, not knocking them at all. KJust not a fan of them, because putting the new one on (after OS update has come out) involves wiping and starting from scratch and when you have almost 400 apps installed, it's a 2-3 days job! And I simply do not believe people that claim that they do it a couple of hours and that's it. It takes a lot longer than that, just to !tap "Install" for each one and get the apps on your device
As I said, I had a custom ROM on my Note 2 and like the one you mentioned, it was based on the Factory ROM.
But guess wat happened? The developer got rid of his Note 2, which meant (as he said), no update and so anyone who wanted to go up in their OS version now had to wipe and start from scratch!
As a side note, personally, I do not like it when people are so quick to say; "Just perform a Factory Reset", because they do not know what's involved in that for a number o people. Plus, to me, no offense to anyone, it just seems to me like giving up. I'd much rather figure out how to make it work. But I find lots of people always saying "Factory Reset!", for every little problem and to me, that just doesn't make sense (I'm not saying that it wouldnt, or wouldn't in this case)! I'd much rather have the Factory ROM, Rooted, with an OC Kernel. Then get rid of all of those apps that they know we don't want, but wish to annoy us for a while with them.
So I'm looking to stay with the Factory ROM, without bloat and an OC Kernel. But I have to admit, the ROM that you mentioned does sound intriguing to me! Any links to it?
I guess I'm a bit worried that 4.4.3 will come out right after I install the ROM you mentioned, but I do want to check it out! Who knows? Maybe I'll stick with it and just never change out the ROM.
What ver of Android is it again and did you provide a link for it? I'm in "Reply" mode hereand cannot see your post. right now.
THANKS FOR YOUR TIME!!!
Btw, Quadrant ht 18 thousand. But like I said, it's not the running of apps/games once they've started up. It's the basic stuff and starting up of big apps (star apps, games, etc.) that's not fun!

Read my other reply that I just finished, but go thru it carefully, please.
As for this ROM, I wish you had pasted in a link. I might have even tried it. But I just spent 3 days setting this thing up two weeks ago and that's a lot to go thru again! Especially so soon after doing it!
And no, I won't believe you if you claim I should be able to do it in a couple of hours. You do not know my setup.
As for it being something I did, that's quite rude and you do have an attitude. You do not even know me and I'm sorry, but you're not going to convince me that I am the only person in the world that waits for a screen to draw, just because it's a 701. That's a ridiculous claim! And you should ask yourself why your ego tells you that if YOU can't find it in the whole minutes that you spent looking for it, that means that it doesn't exist. Apparently you feel that it should all come to you. That's ego.
But hey, maybe I'm just deluded, or on drugs. Or maybe I hit my head falling out of a tree. Or maybe I just don't know anything about electronic devices. I mean after all, YOU could not find it, which MUST mean that it does NOT exist! But let me quote something to you regarding this Tab and 4.3, which is what I said slowed mine down;
"4.3 for the TF701T is on Asus's web site... The I/O has slowed it down to a crawl."
Since you don't like to paste in links and prefer to slam me instead, I won't paste the link in for you either.
I have openly stated that I am not a programmer. I am also not an Android "expert". I do know a lot about the subject, but I am by no means an expert.
What I do have for qualifications, is being a compluter/electronics technician (a real one,) for 30 years and an instructor of everything from sub-atomic teory (which is involved, believe it or not), all the way up to Global Wireless Networking, including satellite technology (and by that, I mean anything involved). And when I say all of this, I mean going anywhere from the overview, down to the board and chip level of every device involved.
I'm not saying any of this to brag. I'm simply showing you what an idiot you are for assuming that you know what I know and what I don't know. And for just assuming that I did something wrong, stating it as an incontrovertable fact!
The bottom line is, it ran nice and smooth in all operations, until I performed the system update to JB v4.3 and then, while games/large apps run beautifully, starting them up is very sluggish! And o is waiting for the screen to redraw after a simple operation like throwing an app to the background.
As for the ROM, like I said, I might have even tried it, even not being a fan of custom ROMs, because it's based on the Factory ROM and if it's a KitKat v4.4.2 for the TF701T, ten I would probably go for it and just leave it at that OS level for as long as I owned the Tablet.
But if it's a JB v4.3 ROM, whether based on the Factory ROM or not, then I'm simply not interested at all, no way, period. I see no point in redoing my entire setup, just so that I can go from v4.3, to v4.3.
I'm sorry to be so blunt in this reply, but you didn't exactly leave a lot of room for friendliness. Especially not with your "Face it! YOU did something wrong!". In truth, that was a comment that was just plain silly! And one that was not based on any facts that you gathered, but rather, just your assumptions about me. And that, my "friend", whether you want to hear it or not, is pure ego!
I'll take a look for that ROM. But as we both know, if I can't find it, that means that it was never written, right? And of course, as we all know, that would also mean that YOU did something WRONG when you mentioned it, right?
Update: I just searched XDA for "TF701T" "ROM" "sbadgs" and it responded with zero results. Guess that means that YOU did something WRONG! <lol!>

I believe you do, my friend! I was not doubting you on that at all!
I did just notice that you are the guy making the custom ROM being discussed here. That's cool. To talk to the source, I mean.
I am not interested though. Not because of the quality of your work or anything. From the discussion here, it seems like a great product! I'm just not interested in spending days setting up again, just to go from v4.3, to JB v4.3, that's all.
But if I were to install a ROM, I'm quite sure that it would be yours, as I do very much appreciate retaining the factory experience and getting rid of as much bloatware as possible!
Just FYI, I did strip out at least 2/3 of the bloatware that comes with the ASUS Factory ROM.
Just as a note; If your ROM was KitKat v4.4.2 and you did what you did to this v4.3 ROM, then in all truth, I probably would install it and just leave it at that forever and enjoy your ROM!
Unless you can tell me that I could install your ROM over the Factory ROM and I won't lose my apps? I know that can be done in certain circumstances and of course, when the factory puts out a ROM update, it does do exactly that and you do not lose your apps, nor any of your own data.
If I cannot do that with your ROM, could you please tell me why I should change my mind and install yours anyway?
Please understand, I'm not asking that out of vanity, nor am I intending to be demanding.
Instead, I am genuinely asking a sincere question. I am actually going for humility, not vanity here, in that I recognize that no one is going to know your ROM better than you and I'm thinking that due to your superior knowledge (that's not meant to be patronizing), you would be able to tell me (if you feel so inclined) to tell me what important advantages I might gin from your custom ROM, that I do not currently possess,
As for where I am right now, of course I am on Jelly Bean v4.3.
I have also stripped out the majority of the bloatware that comes from the factory and so, it is not a case in which I just have a ton of stuff running wild on my tablet, eating up resources and thus, performance.
Again, just FYI, I am also running "Greenify", as well as "BootManager" (Defim Utils) and of course, "App Quarantine" for anything that might slip through my barricades <lol!>
So I leave it up to you, my friend. If you are so inclined (if not, then I appreciate the time you gave me already), what is it that should really draw me to your ROM, versus what I already have/have done?
Once again, THANK YOU for your time! I REALLY DO appreciate it!!!

Well you can install my ROM over the top and it would keep your apps and data. However the Asus unlock tool wipes the device But you can use the Asus backup tool to backup and then restore afterwards. You'll lose 15 minutes of your life doing it and you could do something more important during that time
Anyway you haven't run quadrant. I also don't like or recommend apps like greenify and bootmanager as they can and do introduce problems. You seem to be running a lot of background stuff. Why? Just unlock, flash my ROM, choose only the apps you want and be done with it
BTW I also created a 4.4.2 based ROM in original dev but it is still beta and doesn't support the Asus apps although it runs most other stuff fine.

I do get what you're saying and thanks for the info. But to address a few points:
1) I did run Quadrant and stated that it hit 18k.
2) I also stated that I don't have a problem with how apps run. The problem I see with speed, as I've said a couple of times, is the basic stuff, like exiting an app and waiting for the screen to draw, shortcuts getting created, stuff like that. The basic stuff. But once an app does come up (which seems delayed to me), it runs smooth as glass!
3) As for what I'm choosing to run in the background, you don't usually choose to do that. Apps do that all by themselves when you install them. That's why I said that setting up for me is not a 2 hour affair, but a 2 day affair. Because I go into the settings for each and every app I install and disable that stuff whenever possible.
4) The reason I use a bootmanager and Greenify, is because Task Managers (an erroneous title for those apps) kill the apps, but not the problem. The apps just start right back up again. I prefer to change the settings in an app and for those that don't allow that, I keep them from running in the first place. Then they only run when I want to use them. For example, I do not have news apps updating in the background. I update them manually after I open them.
5) I do not care about running the Asus apps. I have removed all of those that I can, except a couple of necessary ones. If you have a 4.4.2 ROM that will run stable, I would be interested in testing it for you once you consider it to be "finished". I'm using that term loosely of course, meaning that there will always be some sort of bugs in any piece of software that's out there.
You've been very kind and very helpful. Thank you for your time!
Also, I am a tech and have been for 30 years. So if there's ever any hardware, or Windows (I know) questions you have, please feel free to PM me and I'll give you my personal email address there. I appreciate community and people like you help to make it one! I sincerely mean that!
As for your ROM, I'm going to wait for you to come out with a KitKat ROM and then install that. I assume it will be after ASUS releases the OS update???
It's fine, because I've got some othr priojects, like trying to convince my LG Optimus F6 that the 32GB External SD Card is actually its Internal Storage. There actually is a way to do it, but so far, I can't get it to do anything more than swap the two while it's running. Once I reboot it, it says; "Nuh, Uh!!!".
Do you have your own thread where you announce your stuff? I'd like to keep up to date with your new releases. I don't trust stuff from too many people, but as far as how a ROM should be done, you and I seem to be on the same page. Just what you need and then customize it with apps yourself.
P.S.: I'm still interested in OverClocking this thing. For me, the rule is as follows: "Does it run? Yes? Then it needs to be overclocked!".
I.e., Asking ME if it needs to be overclocked is kind of like taking my friend Jeff shopping for his next motorcycle. He was looking at two of them. He asked about the top speed. The sales guy told him one went up to 160MPH and the other to 170MPH. The salesman then said; "But at that speed, does the 10MPH really matter?".
My friend Jeff looked at him with a very serious face and eyes wide open and said; "Of course it does!!!".
My philosophy with Porsches and computing devices.
Thanks again!
