I Cleaned up thread, i will make buttons by request.
I really like the on screen buttons because my capacitive buttons have the ghost touch issue. I do this mod for me but, it would be wrong not to share with the community!
First off thanks evilisto for the original guide for this mod, and BIG thanks to Thnikk for holding my hand and walking me though this!
Remember with each rom release i need to update the zip so don't flash a V2 zip with V2.1 or RC3 zip on RC4 ect., You get the point!
Flashing Themes will probably break the on-screen buttons so make sure to Re-Enable the bottom buttons before flashing themes!

Revert: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/24998121/Cbalt V23 REVERT.zip
How to disable the bottom row of capacitive buttons:
open root explorer
Mount R/W
navigate to system/usr/keylayout
long press cypress-touchkey.kl and select "Open in text editor"
Delete all text, or place # in front of all lines.
press menu and hit save and Exit, Reboot, Enjoy!
To Re-enable:
Mount R/W
navigate to system/usr/keylayout
Deleted cypress-touchkey.kl
change 'cypress-touchkey.kl.bak' to 'cypress-touchkey.kl'
Save and exit, Reboot, Enjoy!
Thank you for your work, but this is already done...
Yes, Thnikk was the one that was doing the on screen buttons for the THS rom but he said that he doesn't have time to do it anymore. So i am taking over for him and i am going to do it for all the rom's instead of just one.
Edit: Nvm He is still doing his mod, really dude...
Ok i was trying to make it easy for everybody to find, i may have inadvertently stepped on thnikk's toes. i have corrected my error and linked his thread for the Build 15 mod. i Sincerely apologize to everybody and thnikk!
please forgive me i am trying to give back to the community that had given so much to me, and i am still new at this thanks for keeping me in line B-eock!

I'm maintaining the mod for cm9 and cm9 only (for the captivate). I'm happy to know that if I want the mod for another rom, I can come here to find them.

Just applied this to Doc's Master ROM and it works great. Thanks for the neat little mod.
Wow...your very own thread!....great job on the virtual buttons. Thanks for all your hard work!
You might be getting one more ICS ROM to make that mod for when it's ready for public release. (note: I am not the dev for the up coming ROM, just a team member who is currently running/testing it, and will want to toy with this.)
I will be waiting

Great job man! My friend cracked her captivate's screen. After replacing it with another captivate screen - the keys just don't work that well.
Sorry to bother you, is there a way to completely disable actual physical keys and use your mod?

No bother at all , yes I disable my keys and only use the on screen keys to.
Just flash the on screen buttons for what ever rom you are using. Then open up root explorer or root browser whichever, and navigate to system/usr/keylayout.
There is a file in there named cypress-touchkey.kl , open up that file in text editor and you can either but a # in front of each line, or what I do is just delete everything. Make sure you save the changes you made and reboot!

Root explorer. And ill save changes, exit root explorer and go back in and look and its like I didn't touch it
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
When you save and exit it should keep the original and add a .bak to the end of it. So you end up with cypress-touchkey.kl and cypress-touchkey.kl.bak correct?
i flashed a new rom earlier and i havent disabled the keys yet, so i just tried to make sure i didn't miss anything. My phone rebooted and no more capacitive keys.
open root explorer
Mount R/W
navigate to system/usr/keylayout
long press cypress-touchkey.kl and select "Open in text editor"
Delete all text
press menu and hit save and Exit, Reboot, Enjoy!
OK so that worked like a charm. Completely didn't think about mount r/w. Dirp. Is there a way to disable the leds from lighting up?

i saw this over the Nexus S thread, and thought it would be awesome if we had the Recent Apps on a click of a button, but not by holding the Home button..and since we don't use the Search button (at least i don't) , we could remap it so it could show the Recent Apps..
so.. here is the MOD : [MOD][19 JAN] Search key to ICS recent apps [add CM9, AOKP and Peter Alfonso version]
and the HOW-TO : [HOWTO] Remap hardware button to ICS recent apps
i tried to make it myself, but i couldn't, so i would like to make a request, or a little help for this MOD

The first link is a flashable .zip, did you try it yourself? I feel tempted to... It's for IML74K so it should work I guess.
The second one is just the instructions on how to do it ourselves, I might try this tomorrow, right now I need some sleep.
So is the flashable zip usable with the teamhacksung ics version?

Or you can just remove the assertions from the update scripts. It seems to work, but it messes up some framework assets, as I was expecting, see the screenshots.
I'll see if I can the file from our build, decompile, make the changes and then recompile but I'm pretty new at this stuff. For instance.... do I have to sign the file to be able to use it, and how do I do that?
and yes, it works beautifully. having the app switcher just one tap away makes this a true multi tasking device to me. You will lose this button functionality though, so if you depend on it this won't work for you.

Hey guys, I've seen a couple of people asking around for a mod to remap our "useless" search button. So I found the easy DIY solution!
Not sure if it's the same across all sense roms, so do hit me back on that! I did this for NIK's Aura Rebirth V3. (Thanks Nik, loved it! :highfive: )
*I'm an android noob, curiosity gave me a cat.
1. Using a root explorer, go to system/usr/keylayout
2. The file you're editting here is atmel-touchscreen.kl, so make a back up of it on your SDCARD just in case.
3. Next you'll see key 102, 139, 158, 217, 249
4. 217 should be originally your search button, indicated by "SEARCH"
5. Switch that with "APP_SWITCH" , do a hot restart, and you're good to go!
Did this using ES with root setting enabled.
Replace your SEARCH button with a RECENT APPS button!
Download a recovery-flashable .zip:
Use this to revert to an original functionality of a search button. It will become search[/b] again.

As stated in the topic, it works only for sense. For AOSP, theres a more complicated process to go through... Google it up and create a guide for AOSPs?
Would love to but I am not good enough to do that. Still... GB switcher is more usefull than search
Is there any way to long press "search" key for search function back?

It seems the other way around. I used this in my AOSP CM9 ROM by simply editing atmel.kl. I tried incorporating it into my Sense ROM and GB recent apps show up.. I've been looking for a few hours now, does anyone know how to fix this? I've found some related threads, but nothing that helps me.
Hi there,
I just want to know that I want to screen off instantly and MiniCm7 didn't screen off instantly.
It's android 2.3.5 and yeah I know it's a little old.
I also turned off the screen off animation in display settings of cyanogenmod setting but it didn't really helpful at all.
Can someone fix it? I mean, it's really kind of slow in screen off and screen on also.
Please

Ok bro. I'll give you the link. Minicm7 for stock kernel was too old but it's still gold. And it's odexed rom. But has organhaze theme and many themes included like Cyanbread. It's great for stock kernel but I'm afraid you have to replace some files in /system/bin for smooth on gaming.
The file is app_process. I'll upload it to you. And you have to add some lines to /system/etc/hw_config.sh with some file manager for dual touch like
insmod /system/lib/modules/ax8mt.ko
That's so..
http://code.google.com/p/minicm/downloads/detail?name=MiniCM7-2.0.7-X8.zip&can=2&q= << Here is the link for MiniCm7 2.0.7 (Stock kernel)
But it's android 2.3.5 so it's a little bit old..
Some bugs I found is
- Default launcher is bad. You have to replace with ADW Launcher Ex (Find it in apkmania.com)
- Screen off is bad also in-call proximity doesn't really off instantly.
But it's really smooth and very great for stock kernel users!
For the app_process.. I'll attach it..
- Delete the old app_process in /system/bin << (recommended)
- Replace the new app-process and give all permissions in root explorer.. That's it!
Please "Thanks" me if I helped.

There's no real dualtouch in xperia x8.. These are just kernel modules. Just check all the stock rom in /system/lib/modules/ and multitouch modules is there.. Maybe it's be fixed if you're using custom kernel.. If you're not gonna play games, it doesn't need to change it but I changed the app_process and my phone run a bit faster!
Of course you need to enable multitouch in hw_config.sh but is it really hard for you? Find some of the stock kernel roms and its included in module section. MiniCM7's hw_config.sh doesn't included that line just like "insmod /system/lib/modules/ax8mt.ko" so multitouch is not activated. That's all. It's not that hard.
i know it! but i am lazy to do it! LOL
so i want to know there's you got fake dualtouch module but not activated! its ok. i will do it
thanks.
Here's some tutorial for you.
Install Root Explorer. Give root access. Go to system. And then go to etc. And after that, just find hw_config.sh.
Click "Mount R/W" but if it already shows "Mount R/O" button, you don't really need to click that button.
Long click the hw_config.sh and choose "Open in text editor".
Now go to the last line and add line like this.
insmod /system/lib/modules/ax8mt.ko
insmod /system/lib/modules/x8gesture.ko
Just add those two lines because I don't know what's your drivers for touchscreen (Synaptics or Cypress) :?
Press "Menu" button on your phone and click "Save changes"
Just reboot! OK?

LG P880 cm10.1.3 stable
how can I enable On-screen Keys and navbar ?
I already tried to to add "qemu.hw.mainkeys=0" line to build.prop. No success here. Wont boot, not even go to the CM logo. Just black screen.
Any Ideas ?
Thx for your help
BTW,
the reason why I want to enable softkey and (if possible) disable the capacitive buttons is the following:
I have hugh fingers. And so often when I type I accidently hit the home button instead of the space bar. It is really annoying. However, I never had this issue with my old SGS and my GalaxyTab.
And another thing: Sometimes when I hit the upper end of the buttons, it fires the long click action, e.g. it goes directly to RecentApps instead of HOME.
There are actually plenty of tutorials all over XDA (general or software section).
Search for it.
If you want further help you have to tell us details about your current setup.
EDIT: Just to let you know,
I searched for 1 min and found 3 different ways. One last tip: don't use the XDA search but Google, way more reasonable outcome.
Sent from my LG-P880 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Well, the problem seems to be limited to cm10.1.3.
Code:
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
works on cm11 nightlies just fine.
Well, thanks for mentioning google. Always helpful.
I still find no other ways than editing build.prop (or using apps that do that for you)

The qemu.hw.mainkeys=0 just means that your device has no hardware menu buttons.
Whether CM didn't set it so this will enable navigation bar or you did something wrong.
5 Mins of search also got me this build.prop line to add:
ro.show.navigationbar=1
Try it.

Same as qemu.hw.mainkeys=0 . Does not boot.
I guess i stick with cm11 nightlies then
but thanks anyway
how are you editing the build.prop?
many file editors give problems with boot after edit, the best option is to copy file, edit and then push to phone through adb
the quemu hw keys is universal on cm to tell if your phone has hw keys or not so it should not be causing problems
(also check if it is already present in the build.prop)
If still it isn't working and don't want to change rom you can always use xposed framework which has a few different modules for nav bar

ok, one last option is edit build.prop then flash

I adb'd into the device and changed the build.prop via shell nano and viola everything works on cm10.1
I'm not responsible for any of this. This someone else thread and development.
I'm simply posting a link for those who would like to play around with this.
Most of these are apks that will show up in under settings/display/front touch buttons/color. For your choosing.
I have tried pretty much all the softkeysin this thread (that are not girly) and have had no issues what so ever. Proceed on your own. I'm not responsible.

all these are just apk's that you download and use what ever file manager you prefer and click and install. you dont have to replace any apks or modify anything. so due to that its pretty safe if softkeys apk doesnt work then in settings select another softkey theme and use your file manager to delete the one that doesnt work

You can download and install them. Tried it by myself and i'm stock, not rooted and no custom recovery installed!
All you have to do, is download what you want, install as normal apk (don't forget in settings-security to active 'unknown sources').
After you installed them, in the settings-display-front touch buttons-color you find them.
If the 'original' appear on homescreen, just deactivate 'transparent background'.
Sorry about my English.

Thanks for that. Yeah I've been trying to explain this is safe. Not a mod just normal apk's. I probably should have mentioned in the OP that you don't need root. And hey I learn something new everyday I.e. disable transparent to get them to show the new soft keys on home screen. I didn't know that. Thanks.

No doubt, I had been trying to get them to stay using the g2 tweak box, and I couldn't do it. That is a simple solution.
