[Q] Current best ROM for Milestone? - Motorola Droid and Milestone Q&A, Help & Troublesh

Hello!
About a year ago I lost my Milestone, just found it within the inside pockets of my jacket
I want to give it to my girlfriend as her X10 Mini pro is getting hardware defects and very limited in playing games and such. I noticed FroyoMod 2.6.0 running quite choppy on it, probably (partially) because of the nice UI and extra options. My question is: which ROM would be the best to have a smooth running phone, advanced layout features not required. Either 2.1, 2.2 or 2.3 would be good. Preferably a stable ROM, of course.
Thanks in advance, Bullehr.

Hi!
I am currentlz using HO!NO! Mod 7.1.5. But I replaced LauncherPro with GO Launcher Ex. I also used Supercharger Script, which frees some RAM
My MM is super snappy now, no lags, no freezes.
Just give it a try
I was close enough to buy a new phone, but now I'm satisfied again ^^
Cheers,
Regaddi

Hi!
Since your girl friend doesn't play games usually, I suggest CM7.1.5. It's stable and smooth running. And Ho! No! 7.2.0 is another good choice. And I also suggest you to remove the 3d gallery and install Quickpic. If you can edit the SystemUI.apk and change the black status bar and scroll bar background into transparent will be better~
Have a nice day~

Have you considered MIUI?
I'd been using CM7 form over six month on my Milestone (A853), but last month I decided to give a try to MIUI and was gladly surprised.
What kept me from changing before was the iPhone-like GUI, which I don't care about, however your gf may like it. On my case just switched back to GO Launcher.
MIUI Camera works just right. Also MIUI SMS and Phone applications are too similar to the ones I'd been using so I didn't even bother to replace them.
Overall my phone doesn't reboots itself anymore, and is fast and responsive.
Unless you gf is fluent in chinese, goto en.miui.com and select one of the variants. If english is your language then you may go US, UK or Scotland. I like US better cause it respects my Alarm+ (shows in status bar), and also has a 4-way reboot option I use.

When I tried MIUI I also was surprised by its beautiness and smoothness, but it took like 1 day, and my MM began to reboot randomly and became stuck and inresponsive like hell...
I don't know exactly what happened there, but when I switched "back" to CM7 I was definately more satisfied with my phone again. I guess it might have something to do with all the MIUI-Apps (and there are a lot).
Just my experience.

CM 7
CM 7 should be goo and stable for her to use it.

MIUI is quite awesome in that it's responsive, comes with good stock apps and is fairly well customizable, although I've replaced the stock launcher with Launcher7.

U mean that RAM freeing supercharger script is not included in HO!NO! by default? Why?

Doesn't seem like that...
When I started Supercharger it showed different values.

Based on your condition, I think CM7.1.5 and CM6.3.6 is suitable for you.

[Q] If Enom 2.14.4 is it, what's next for you?

Guys,
I'm a stability freak, kind of the opposite end of the planet from the CM7 nightly guys I suppose... I love the extra features that are in some ROMs, but Enom's ROM has lots of nice features and is rock solid stable.
But as we all know, he has taken personal leave of Android since December and maybe he'll come back, maybe he won't...
So for you all who want a stable ROM similar to Enom, what are you considering, or what have you already tried? I'm hoping CM7 gets stable and released in the next bit and I'll perhaps move to it, but I really don't want to leave Enom. However I've heard Gingerbread is a bit faster, better storage efficiency, plus fixes, etc..
I'd create a poll, but there's too many ROMs to really put in there I suppose and I'd inevitably leave one or two out, so I won't.
Really never had a problem with CM7. It never reboots and I always get my calls/messages. What do you need more stability from.
You could always try the stock rooted rom plus whatever extras you need.
I am currently using Geo's stock GB ROM. It is running pretty good. DT A2SD seems to screw with the phone volume. (Not sure how or why, but I tested this extensively over the last 2 hours and it definitely does something to it.) Battery life is a little bit lacking. Perhaps a better kernel will help that out. The only thing that is really needed is trackball wake/unlock. I hope someone can fix the code for GB soon. I never really cared for FM radio, so no loss there for me. Aside from the lack of Enom's spare parts, I am happy with it.
lets hope enom comes back to us (greedily ).. i think were all in agreeance when i say he has his priorities straight... all the best to enom..
aside from that, i enjoyed leos roms shortly after froyo was released. i think he was on personal leave as well just recently.. his spare parts reminded me of enoms as far as options. even though he doesnt have the 'hardware skills' necessary, id love to see more from leo..

Very happy with the speed & stability of Geo's GB rom!
CM7 RC1 running VERY well for me. No wonks, great battery.. stable and fast
Yes I am missing enomthers latest touch for the gingerbread ota. But family comes first. Right now I am using dsixda gingerbread rom with root, deodexe, dt's apps2sd, busybox. So far it is running good. Was on geo114m's gingerbread for a little while.
What I miss about enomthers rom is the ability to uninstall programs that you are not going to use. Now I have to semi cook a rom taking out the stuff I don't want. Only thing all of these ota gbs are missing is the trackball wake and alert. Might go back to the latest enomther until that happens.

I'm coming from Enom's ROM. I took the plunge and installed a couple of nightlies, and then CM7RC1.
I deeply regret it.
Even Dewonkifier didn't help me. Today my mic went silent and I had to reboot to regain it. I can't count the calls I've missed in the last week.
I don't like having to recompile it to build battery percentage.
Gingerbread completely sucks when it comes to launchers (or should I say it the other way around - all the launchers completely suck under Gingerbread). No launcher has been optimized to work with more than 5 screens - and that includes Go-EX / ADW / LP. They suck so badly I can't stand it. Nexus S has it the same way for almost 2 months - and it hasn't been fixed yet. I don't have high hopes of somebody fixing it too soon, until more devices with GB appear.
The only reason I'm keeping CM7 at this point is because I want to correct its RTL language support - it annoys me (specifically when mixing RTL and LTR languages, and more specifically - in punctuation). Plus, I hope to make it distinguish between LTR and RTL strings using a bit better algorithm than the "any RTL symbols in the string? => RTL string" current one. And make it adjustable under CM menus.
This week/weekend I hope to find enough time for it, test it, hopefully submit it (if I get a better solution than the current one), and I'm seriously considering going back to Enom's ROM, at least until one of the launchers gets GB-compatible and CM7 will be merged with GRI40 source and gets rid of the wonks. Never had this SMS bug for a year, don't think it'll bother me in another couple of months. And I don't use Copy-Paste nearly enough to justify GB sweetness. I'll really miss the screen animation...
Thank you very much kind sir.

This may actually be my first post here on XDA after countless hours of reading, installing, testing, tweaking and starting all over with my N1.
Your post title says it all. When Enomther called it quits, I figured my N1 had reached it's zenith and would live out it's days rocking The Official 2.14.4. This ROM does it all: Fast, many kernels available to play with, feature-rich, STABLE, did I mention fast?
Out of curiosity regarding the sheer number of threads, I just had to try an MIUI ROM. Tried the stock set-up from miui-dev.com. While I thought the graphics and integrated feature set was great, it was very buggy. Lots of little things just did not work as they should have.
I was not interested in CM7 as bloat seems to have sapped away speed over the last several months.
However, I have run the Gingerbread custom set-up put together by Geo411m and it rocks! Very stable so far, good battery life with the stock kernel, everything works like it should and the performance is excellent. Menus are snappy, web pages scroll smoothly...there are very few issues and I am thrilled that the N1s have a new lease on life.
Only two gripes about Gingerbread so far:
1) No Trackball unlock
2) No power widget integrated into the pull down - I LOVED this feature for toggling system states.
Other than those minor issues that I am sure will be addressed in future ROMs, I am thrilled with GB. Now if only Enomther would weave his magic once again...
Thanks to the great community that makes these phones so fun and powerful!

I'm with the TS when he says that he needs stability. CM7 up until RC1 was just not cutting it, too many wonks and quarks. I put CM7 RC1 on my N1 and it works, but I ended up back on Kang - o - rama's version of cm6.1. Now that I've seen Kangorama release a version with CM7, I may give that a shot.
One of my biggest concerns is memory. If I don't need the stock launcher or ADW, then I don't want to waste the memory there. Kang o rama really works that out with its advanced installer.
For now though, I'm more than happy with Kang o rama. My N1, my gf's N1, and my roommates N1 all are running it and are VERY pleased.
So not surprisingly overwhelming CM7 responses.. So maybe I'll try that as well, but I'm still going to wait until CM7 is released and the "wonky" stuff is fixed.
It's funny how some of us are having polar opposite experiences with CM7 RC1. Really good for some and totally lousy for others
I guess it depends on the usage, and on the level of stability required from the ROM...
I think if I was used to rebooting my phone once in a couple of days - I wouldn't notice some of the problems. If I wasn't used to having 7 screens filled with widgets and icons - I wouldn't complain about the launchers and GB. If I had a lot of calls - possibly I wouldn't have the phone idle for enough time to wonk out. Some uses make the problems more visible.

I've found it to be extremely stable and even better battery life than Enom's. I've also seen an improvement in bluetooth connectivity.
I miss most the status bar power control widget, better trackball notification and the flexibility of his spareparts mod.

Need a Better ROM Than CM

I have had about enough of CyanogenMod. Been using it since 5, and every single version has had significant usability problems. Currently in 7.0.3 photos are bad, GPS is non-functional, it forgets settings like keyboard, and when I first answer the phone no one can hear me.
Terrible. There has got to be something better. If not I'm going to stock.
You can use MIUI ROM
Enomther's
It's not gingerbread but is by far the most stable and the fastest.
There's many ROM on this forum, you are free to use which ever make you happy.
CM7 has been great for me since the first nightly.
Autinhyeu seriously? Like RoDrIgUeZsTyLe, or straight MIUI?
Are most functions stable?
baseballfanz I'm glad you've had such luck. Many of us haven't. I'm looking for feedback of others' experiences on which ROMs seem to work the best. I already know which one I'm not using anymore.

Yes, MIUIMOD from Rod
i had use MIUI Stock 4 months ago, then i use CM 7 nightly build, and now, i comeback MIUI with MIUIMOD ROM, after a week use, with some tutorial, i think its best for my phone at the moment, hehe... some user dont want use MIUI, because it like as iOS but i dont care, it gives me comfort & i use it...
With MIUIMOD, you will have more than free Internal memory and RAM memory...
anyway, i saw dont more difference between the CM7 and MIUI, you can choice
With CM all I had to do was wipe and use Amon Ra to flash zip.
There are no instructions with RoDrIgUeZsTyLe except "MIUIMOD D2SD HowTo", which only seems to do with partitioning. Do partitions actually need to be changed, and if so why?
How to apply the ROM and why aren't there instructions?
Also he says, " (Please Read the D2SD HowTo)", but there's no link and a search doesn't turn it up.
MIUI is pretty good
Which one? I've found four so far, including one that seems to have Chinese buttons.

You should definitely go for QND MIUI
Used it from the beginning and I'm loving it. It's stock MIUI with XJ's multilanguage pack, so it's just like MIUI is supposed to be. No junk or ugly themes added
I also get the delayed connection when I answer calls but besides that CM7 is the best there is.Some debate MIUI is better but its a matter of the individuals likes/dislikes. Also the themes and control of customization on CM7 IMO by far surpasses any other rom out there currently so you should prolly stick w/ CM. Hopefully the next stable release fixes the bugs your speaking of
Mouse I've been patient with CM since version 5, and I am fed up.
The good news is I am really digging this MIUIMod. Seems much more modern, smooth, and usable than CM. Have just now gotten things set up so it remains to be seen how well things work, but the camera is sure better and that's a biggie for me.
Takes forever to boot (no big deal) and I am missing my Galaxy wallpaper, but I am:

flash away then and see what one you like the best thats what its all about...i would just use stock miui from either here or miui-dev if you are that finicky about roms
I just have so much to set up that it takes about a day. This is one thing that was so irritating abut CM; in order to correct atrocious usability bugs I'd have to completely reinstall each month and start all over again. I started with Rodriguez today and that's fine so far except for the lack of Galaxy wallpaper. Still have alot to learn about MIUI. Lucky it's Saturday...
You could always to CM6.x if you like CM's features.

So much has been fixed and improved in the latest cyan nightlies over 7.0.3 that you prob should try that out first.
Have you given any of eVilD's sense roms? NXSense and NXSense HD have been working pretty well for me, although nobody can beat MIUI battery life and cuatomuzability
Haven't checked out the Sense ROMs.
MIUI is very nice so far. Desktops rotate like a cube and other nice effects. It's like a 21st century iPhone except without the restrictions, not a 20th century Windows-like CM phone. And I've found the Galaxy wallpaper in the market. My desktops are games|multimedia|default|appts/calendar|utilities. There is no launcher place where all the apps are; all apps are on desktops, but you can put apps inside a folder app which is very handy. Those apps I use are on desktops, those I rarely use are in Apps, Utilities, Multimedia, and Unused folders. No more screenshot app needed; it's Menu:VolDown now.
GPS still has problems, and still some things I haven't figured out. I need to put contacts into folders in the contacts app. With CM I'd put them into one contact and change the label to Custom with their name in it. That is only simulating folders though. Wish there were a better way or an app that could handle folders. Edit: Hey, Contacts has something called Groups, which just may be the ticket! Experimenting.
Does anyone know why DroidWall is no longer in the Market? That is my most valued app to keep out G**gle's prying eyes.

[Q] Porting MIUI Framework with Look and Feel to Cyanogen

Hi Guys,
after about 2 Hours of searching I'm trying this way
Is it possible to port the Framework with the Look and Feel of MIUI (including Launcher, Lockscreen, Lockscreen with Incoming Call, and so on...) to Cyanogenmod? Maybe not the launcher, LauncherPro is quite Perfect
I really like the MIUI Lockscreen and also when getting an incoming call but theres no theme to get this look.
I've tried to replace the whole framework in Cyanogen with the one included in MIUI but this gave me only Bootloops and I'm not really familiar with Java Code

why don't use just use miui rom , it's cm based ...
i also love the LOOK of miui rom, but its not as good as cm.
for one its based on quite an old rc 1 for our 2x, then the cammera sux there (but that can b changed), also it manages storage in some weird way which suggests that i dont even have an external sd, also i can not get my mobile data on any version of miui working. its sad, i really love the look. but cm is just better.

I beg to disagree on this. I used MIUI 1.9.30 for about a week, and in the short span of time, I've had more issues than I've ever had all the other ROMs combined. It tends to lose data and/or voice connectivity for no apparent reason. It also forced a hard power-off while it was connected to a charger and didn't want to power back on until I pulled the battery out. I've never had this issue with the stock, leaked ROMs (e.g. 20e, 20i), or CM.

I had CM7 on my last phone but now i won´t give Miui away
I'm using MIUI 1.9.30 netDrg EXT4 + VorkKernel + tweak Pack from Owain94.
Today I tried to test the latest CM (7.1.0 stable), and..... my MIUI is most faster
Miui is comvienent to use, but so much slower than CM... :S Had lots of issues to install owain's tweak on miui. Miui was always lagging when placing a widget on the laucher. :S Just felt bad after CM.
For some reason, I had a lot of issues with 1.9.30, but I decided to give another shot when 1.10.8 was released.
I am in an awkward situation where I am forced to swallow my own words written only a few days ago. It's fast, stable, and best of all, very battery friendly. I went through the whole day (14+ hours) with 45% to spare. That's the best battery life I've seen out of this phone with any ROM.
I don't give a whole lot of credit to the synthetic benchmarks, but it does really well on the stock MIUI/CM kernel. I am consistently getting 3700+ on Quadrant and 930'ish on Vellamo.
Anyone can port it?

Which ROM to install?

Hello,
I have my A853 Milestone for about a year and a half.
Currently I have the HO!NO! Cyanogen mod installed on it.
The problem is that the device is very slow, it always crash and games are super laggy (like Angry Birds) or it crashes (like Draw Something).
Which ROM should I install?
I want it to be stable, quick and run games like it should run them.
Thanks

I've had my OG droid for over two years, and I think I've tried every possible ROM there is. The Gingerbread ROM are nice, but they lag really badly on the device. It doesn't have the CPU or memory to handle it well enough. You could do it, but things like the camera and games will almost always end up bogging the device to unresponsive.
I've had the best luck with Liquid Frozen Yogurt 1.95. It s a 2.2.1 ROM (Froyo) and it is really smooth. The camera actually works which is a problem for most of the GB ROMs. Bugless Beast is also a good ROM.

I play zenonia in froyo mod with minimal lags. I think it is the best rom for gaming.
I liked cm6 for battery but cm9 was running really good on mine

What's wrong with CM 7.2.0 RC1 by kabaldan? I'm planing to install it on my 2.2 stock ROM but retain the 600mhz frequency for battery life reason. Would I suffer worse performance than my current stock?
thanks
I'm in the same boat as the OP.
I am setting up my friend's OG Droid and I'm curious the best ROM.
I have to say I'm pretty happy with CM 7.1 stable release so far. It works great so far and I haven't noticed any problems. The camera seems fine.
Is GB really that bad?
I did try CM 7.2 experimental build (from CM download page) and it was working great until I noticed that the flashlight app, torch wouldn't work. I really wanted it to work in the Power Widget. After screwing around with it for quite a while, I ended reflashing back to CM7.1 stable.
Assuming games won't be games played on the device, I think that CM7 is the way to go unless there are more RAM-hogging apps running. I'm a newb to the OG Droid though.
*EDIT*
P.S. Do you guys have a favorite recovery? I am using CWM 2.5.0.1. The weird thing is it doesn't display Dalvik as wiped when I wipe Dalvik Cache. I dunno if it is a problem or not. I actually searched around a fair bit. What is the best recovery for the OG Droid? Stability, nandroids, and functionality are key. I don't care about touch interface.
Thanks. Feel free to flame me if I am overlooking this info.
recovery i use minimod, hava any scripts (supercharge), unistall system apps, backup apps and have a script to wipe a ext partition.
I used all roms for milestone and cm6 (or shadowmod discontinued a long time ago ) is the best, the only one it works fine, another roms always have a problem with performance (i don't play in my phone).
I have been runnning a rooted overclocked (800mhz) stock rom for ages, but still had issues with it freezing when surfing and quitting apps.
Yesterday I finally got round to changing to CM 7.2.0 RC1. Performance is so much better, more options, smoother scrolling, but the battery life is worse. I had to charge it twice today which is usually a rare occurance. So I have knocked it back down to 800mhz again from 1ghz, setup the 2g toggle, and made a few other tweeks. Will see how that does for now, but if not then will look into battery calibration.
I rarely use my phone for gaming, so couldn't comment on the performance, but if its anything like what I experienced elsewhere you should be happy. Slightly earlier builds have been mentioned to have a better battery life too.
Hope that helps
Best ROM on the Milestone right now? MIUI 2.4.20 hands down.
Damn... new users can't post outside link but Google it.
And btw, it seems that the ROM was designed for Chinese Milestone so the physical keyboard layout is kinda messed up if you use Europe or HK milestone. And since I don't use the physical keyboard at all so it's not a huge problem. But seriously, this is the best damn thing you can put on a Milestone, try it out
Cheers

While it will probably work better than a stock ROM, I'd suggest you try a Froyo based ROM. The biggest issue with GB on a Milestone is the RAM. I tried out every single workaround I came across for over a year, only to end up going back to CM6 (vikasbn's version).

Thanks for the tip bro. Do you recommend this Froyo thread or something else?

That's the one I'm currently using and so far it's worked like charm. It's also the only one that seems to be updated.
Hello everyone,
I have an A853 (Milestone). I am looking for advice on what SBF and ROM to install, and how to optimize the performance.
I hope it is ok for me to join this thread (instead of opening a new one). Below are my concerns; I am looking forward to advice from experienced forum members (reading from your posts, you definitively are experienced):
1. underlying firmware (OS)
If I understand correctly, due to the locked bootloader I can only change which kernel I will be running by flashing a different SBF file:
- SHOLS_U2_02.31.0 (I believe this is stock Eclair?)
- SHOLS_U2_05.26.3 (and this should be stock Froyo?)
Which SBF should I flash my phone with, so that the ROM I will later choose will work best? Of course, I'll apply a vulnerable SBF afterwards.
2. ROM
I am most keen on MIUI (the latest and final build for this device is 2.4.20?), since I was using it before and I really like its user interface. However, I experienced some problems with it (unresponsive/laggy, not receiving SMS messages after some time, etc.).
Is the MIUI-derivate NIMIUI any better? Moreover, I saw there is another ''chef'' quynhnt that is further developing NIMIUI but I see user responses that it is kind of buggy?
I've tried FroyoMOD which seemed the fastest to me (although I would be really missing MIUI features), however it did not let me connect to my home WiFi (WPA2+AES+Radius) so I let it go.
ICS seems kind of no-go to me because Milestone only has 256MB of RAM (which is very little); I've tried the unofficial alpha CM9 and although everything worked, it was just too laggy. I believe the unofficial MIUI v4 would be the same.
Any suggestions? I am leaning towards official MIUI but with thorough testing of incoming SMS (I can't afford not to receive them) and additional optimizations that are decribed below. Or am I missing something?
3. optimizations
SuperCharger
Definitively I would like to use the SuperCharger V6 (or is it V8 - any differences?). Which settings profile should I select based on the following demands:
- I don't play games on my phone
- I want a responsive phone with no lag
- The most demanding app I use is Exchange sync (6 accounts), nothing more
Build.prop modifications?
Should I take care of anything here? Maybe change the Dalvik heap size (to what?)
ext3 on sdcard
Can this somehow help me? I have prepared a functioning ext3 partition on my sd, I just don't know if it is possible to somehow manage a swapfile on it and if this should help my phone being less laggy? Can MIUI handle this out-of-the-box?
I kindly thank to anyone who would be willing to help me with advice.
Best regards, d11
I got an OG Droid i use for multimedia... The screen is crystal clear with LIquid Smooth... the launcher sometimes gets buggy but everything works including torch etc... It basically made an old system useful again. I'll try out other system and post my results... Froyo versions first and so on...

Incredible S slow with Android 4/ICS

Hi!
I recently updated my IS to the newest Android 4 and god, it's slow. There is lag everywhere, I click on a icon and it takes like a second for screen to appear. The previous version was much smoother.
I disabled the animations and it seems to helped a bit, is there anything else I can do? Or just revert to the older version?
Anybody else experiencing the same problem?
Thanks

Thats a known problem with stock ICS
If you flash a custom rom, generally they are faster
for example I had Ice Cold for a few months, rock solid and super fast
I bought my incredible more than one year ago and I've never thought to unlock and go with custom rom until i got the last OTA. I was so disappointed i flashed Nik's project x almost the same day. You should really consider trying a custom rom. If you like stock appearance you could try android revolution HD i bet it will perform way better than stock ics

Thanks for your confirmations!
I'll try a custom ROM then.
As for the appearance I use a custom homepage anyway.
After using CM7 for a while, which was great, I upgraded to IceCold 8.1.1. I found it slow and laggy. Then I updated to Official Stock ICS. Same. I updated the radio to the '11' version. Still the same. Now I am using Ice Cold 8.3. Still the same. I did full wipe, and restored apps with Titanium.
I am very frustrated. I want ICS, but I am thinking of going back to CM7.2. I should be happy with IceCold, but I'm not. Slow, laggy, and lots of 'not responding' messages. Facebook app is the worst - almost unusable.
Any ideas anyone? I have:
IceColdSandwich 8.3 Rossi
4EXT Recovery
Blackrose 2.02 S-OFF
Ice cold is not laggy for me at all
How long have you let the ROM settle before deeming it laggy?
What clock speed for CPU? And maybe try go to recovery and clear both cache an dalvik cache, and make sure to do that after every rom flash if you don't already
Just that most of us are having a smooth nearly flawless ICS experience, hard to think only you are having problems

@jcr67: It's funny how mine is the other way round. I mean I didn't use the stock ROM (or whatever it is called) and installed CM 7.2 as soon as I got my phone because I didn't like the stock UI at all and I had seen CM 7.2 running on DHD with my cousin so I was kinda impressed. I kept using it until I visited my cousin and comparing both the phones (play store, I had a topic on that) was just awful. My play store searching, loading, agreement would take ages. I had been trying lots of ROMs until I came across Ice cream sandwich ROMs and the speeds were great (Virtuous Vivo) but it was the stock UI again which got me bored. I, yesterday, came across a topic by Nathan about Incredible S ROMs and battery life and after reading each and every post, I knew IceColdSandwich is my next ROM or I am selling this ****. Then and now, this is the best ROM I tried till now. No lag, great UI (after theme installation that was in the topic itself, it's become even greater). The only problem I am having is with my battery life. I had this on other ROMs too. So all I can say is that I am more than just satisfied with this ROM.
Try reinstalling the ROM by after running the SuperWipe script (inside the Android Revolution HD ROM topic.)
Sorry for the long post.

Update - It is getting better!

Ignore my earlier comments, re IceCold.
I always clear dalvik, wipe etc, when installing. But I repeated this anyway, just to make sure. I let it settle down. It got better. And better. And now I have V6 supercharged it.
It's pretty great now.
Except for the battery life. I'm getting not much more than half a day, without doing much.
Usually I ensure that the following are disabled unless I really want them:
- WiFi
- Bluetooth
- GPS
- Vibration (keyboard)
- keyboard tones
- USB debugging
Optional: Automatic brightness turned off and set brightness to comfortable level
If you are overclocking it try to use it at usual clock speed. Overclocking consumes more battery.

I started to use custom ROM after upgrade to ICS. Laggy, even.the apps & notification drawer also laggy.
for me the latest ota ics upgrade is quite good, just sometimes i can feel that things just dun get smooth enough, made my mind and tried few custom roms. Most of them are just really gud in term of performances and looks. Now im gud to go with ice cold rom, much better than official rom of course, and on the battery issue, just make sure u turn off anything u dun need when u dun need them
I find ARHD 3.0.1 with V6 Supercharger script properly installed (no KickAssKernelizer cos I want to wait for a custom kernel) and ultrasmooth rosie.apk to be a fairly smooth running experience.
Tip:
I've improved battery life and reduced common running temperature and hence increased performance/stability/speed by simply running GSM only instead of GSM/HSPA unless I'm in a good signal zone and want to browse data quickly. (I'm talking 2G/3G switching in the mobile network settings.. may not be labelled gsm/hspa in some ROMs). This is a good bet, especially when indoors. I live in a basement so signal drops are more steep for the higher frequency 3G signal.
This should be true for any ROM. Anywhere your data browsing is slow to heart-rendingly unusable.. should definitely save battery, reduce temp, and improve text and call reception to switch to GSM only!

OK, I have a simple question: Is any ICS custom ROM as fast as the Gingerbread stock ROM? OR do I need to find a way do downgrade to Gingerbread? Which will be a pain in the bottom parts...

I find project X to be really quick and doesn't seem to struggle with multiple apps running I.e spotify, Facebook and chrome.
Easy to flash too!
We Want ICS
For 'We Want CS' I still can see lag when open apps drawer & pull down notification. Anyway, its still better than OTA update.
