This is best done after you flash a ROM as you might lose some settings.
(I noticed my wall paper changed and i had to sign back into Google account)
---This framework-res.apk file is different for every ROM---
Hi,
I wanted to share a little mod that could help in extending battery life - lowering default auto-brightness levels. As all of You know our big, bright SuperLCD is an excelent display but for that it uses most of our battery:/
I like the idea of auto-brightness but I find it too bright for most of the time. Setting brightness manualy to one level makes it either too dim or it uses too much battery and switching it all the time that You go outside or turn on the light is a little bit inconvenient.
In order to lower auto-brightness levels You have to change values in framework-res.apk/res/values/arrays.xml and here is how (read whole post first )
These are stock HTC Raider values:
Click to collapse
Code:
<integer-array name="config_autoBrightnessLcdBacklightValues">

75

75

75

97

120

142

170

198

227

255

</integer-array>
These are values that I use and found best for me:
Code:
<integer-array name="config_autoBrightnessLcdBacklightValues">

20

40

50

70

90

100

130

155

180

225

</integer-array>
These brightness levels are corresponding to the amount of light that light sensor is getting - the lowest value is while in the low light the highest when for example your phone is in direct sunlight. Brightness values are defined by numbers 1 is the lowest possible setting and 255 is the maximum brightness that can be set.
As You can see I was pretty aggressive with lowering these values and yet the screen is still bright in every situation. You can set them a little bit higher or lower in order to suit your preferences.
Here is a guide on how to perform this mod on any framework-res.apk using apk manager (thanks for the guide goes to desean):
1. Download APK manager and unpack somewhere
2. Grab framework-res.apk from your phone under \system\framework\ (e.g. adb pull) and place it in the "place-apk-here-for-modding" folder
3. Run Script.bat and select option 9
4. Once done, go to projects\framework-res.apk\res\values\arrays.xml and edit your values as per first post.
5. Once edited, compile the apk using option 11
6. Qn: Is this a system apk. Ans: y
7. Qn: Aside from the signatures, would .... least. Ans: y
8. Prompt: In the apk manager folder u'll find a keep folder..... done then press enter on this script. Press any key to continue . . . You have to go to "keep" folder and delete resources.arsc because arrays.xml have been changed. After this You can press any key in apk manager window.
9. Once done, input 25 in apk manager and select "unsignedframework-res.apk" by entering the number that stands for it. After selecting it You should see in apk main window in the top right corner "Current-App: unsignedframework-res.apk".
10. Now press 5 to zipalign apk. You will find your completed, zipaligned apk under place-apk-here-for-modding\unsignedframework-res.apk.
11.Rename it back to framework-res.apk and adb push the file back to your phone
Click to collapse
To send it back to your phone
Prerequisites have...
The file you are pushing must be placed in the platform-tools folder of adb so if you are pushing file "framework-res.apk" this needs to be downloaded/copy and pasted in C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools
1: go to run and type cmd (or just open your command prompt)
2: cd C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools
3: adb remount
4: adb devices *if everything is set up right this should output a serial number*
5: adb push FFFFFFF.FFF /#####/###### *i hope my notes help here you need to put the file name in for the F(s) and in the pound signs you put the destination on the devices:
Code:
adb push framework-res.apk /system/framework
7. adb reboot this is how you finish
Click to collapse
You have to copy the file to your phone with ADB or you will get a boot loop and have to re install your ROM.

APK Manager 4.9 download link (currently original thread link down)
http://www.zshare.net/download/99034654c32618ba/
WOW! I was just about to ask if anyone knew how to accomplish this! Thanks dude!
Edit: Er..phone just went into a bootloop. Lemme try again..
Edit2: I first replaced the framework-res.apk using root explorer...big mistake, phone went into a bootloop and I couldnt adb to it to push the apk correctly, whoops. Just reinstalled the ROM I was using and pushed the apk using adb and all is well.
I noticed two other very similar looking values: config_autoBrightnessLcdBacklightValuesUp and config_autoBrightnessLcdBacklightValuesDown. Is it necessary to change these as well?

Yes you have to use adb ill put that in the first post,
to be honest i am not entirely sure what that is for i assume, that it is when you move the slider what values it displays when you slide it, i noticed a change without changing those values.
also i changed the button back lights to 200, i find it more than enough for me.
Is there a working mirror to APK manager? The link in the thread is down.

Serious props to you jul644 for detailing this process! I've always hated how the Hero, Evo, & now Vivid I've had never got dark enough in pitch black rooms, and now I'm excited to fix that problem. I was curious though since I just modded my battery meter using UOT Kitchen, if I could drop in the backlight-modded framework-res.apk via 7-zip replacing the UOT framework-res.apk file then flash it via recovery. I wonder if that would make me sign into Google and mess with settings like you mentioned. Thanks.
How-To with UOT

How, if it's possible, do we integrate this modded framework-res.apk into a UOT Kitchen zip flash file? I want to mod my battery icons and would like to install at the same time so one doesn't interfere with the other. Should I upload the framework-res.apk from this to UOT Kitchen (with my original SystemUI.apk) and then change the battery icons, then download and flash?
Thanks for your help!
*****EDIT - 2/15/2011*****
Ok so I did the framework-res.apk edits by decompiling/recompiling per jul644, uploaded that into UOT Kitchen along with original SystemUI.apk and com.htc.resources.apk. I chose my battery icon mod, downloaded, cleared all the caches and flashed in recovery with no problems ) Just wanted to let you guys know how to make it a recovery flashable zip instead of pushing via ADB.
ICS?
So can anyone confirm or deny if this still works wit ICS will be trying it myself, when I get a chance, but would rather not waste time if it wont work!
It does work, I have done it. ICS it's just more difficult to decompile & recompile. I added it & 1% stock-style battery icons into Pirateghost's CWM .56 flashable ROM.
Keep getting errors when recompiling using stock telstra ICS+ root
error on 1st line after selecting option 11 ie. step 5 above
could not find sources????
Any suggestions what I am doing wrong????
---------- Post added at 09:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:24 PM ----------
okay also getting this error twice before it de-compiles
the system cannot find the path specified
then seems to decompile happily???????????
Any suggestions?
I'm getting an 'Operation not permitted' when I try to remount before pushing the file back. Anyone else having this problem? I'm running a WCX GB ROM (no ICS, I'm on Rogers).

are you trying to remount your sd card? if so do not, just select charge only
No, just trying to remount as per the instructions in the first post, so /system is R/W. Setting it to charge only. No dice.
I tried doing it in recovery (by mounting /system, then going through the ADB commands, all of which are successful), but the result is a bootloop once I'm done.
Edit: It's also worth noting that newer versions of APK Manager/Multi-tool seem to have different numbering for the operations. In step 9, number 22 sets the compression level, whereas I think it used to set the active APK (which I think is 25 now).
I ended up taking the stock framework-res from the ROM, modifying the arrays.xml values as per the OP instructions, then going through the UOT Kitchen (I had a battery mod anyway). Worked perfectly.
Thanks to pauley for reporting success earlier, which provided me with the workaround.
Has anyone done this that could possibly create a flashable zipped version of it? I tried to do it myself but with the new APK Multi Tool things were different to the instructions of OP and I couldn't get it to work
Edit: Nvm managed to fix it and make my own flashable zip. Thanks for the effort OP
I have tried to do this... And I keep getting an error on the recompile side...
Just wondering... Does apkmanager require windows 7 or something... Or is there some reason it wouldn't work on windows xp?

The errors I encountered when compiling were solved by:
1) Putting Java in the windows path
2) Putting ADB in the windows path
3) Not having any spaces in the APK Manager file path
There are no OS dependencies that I'm aware of. Just open the log from within the APK manager and you should be able to identify the error.
The problem is I don't really speak java all that well...
Could I just move the java executable to the working directory?

For java, all you have to do is download the JDK (i got the 32 bit version), and then add 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jdk1.7.0_03\bin' to the windows path so it becomes something like:
%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;%SYSTEMROOT%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\;C:\Program Files (x86)\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\Core-Static;C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R2011a\runtime\win64;C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R2011a\bin;C:\Program Files (x86)\MKVToolNix;C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jdk1.7.0_03\bin;C:\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools\;C:\Android\APKMultiTools\
For Windows XP, you'd probably be running 32 bit and so it would be installed in the regular program files.

Is there a way i can change png files on my phone from my phone? I want to change the calling icon in the framework-res.apk. i found out a way to change it with an app in the market. But i dont know how to put it back in the apk. Help please.
find the picture --> backup it --> put in your picture with the same name and exactly the same bigness (pixels) --> bingo
cheers, stephan1
its not that easy. any other ideas anybody please.
Well if the file is a .9.png then it won't be that easy because these files are compiled to binary. (correct me if I'm wrong devs) You will need to do a little more reading to figure this one out. Also, you can't just "unzip" an apk and mess around with the pics and think that it's going to work when you zip it backup. My understanding is that you have to place the file that you are replacing into the compressed(i.e. zipped) apk.
Once again, Devs, correct me if I am wrong but all my info comes straight from using the search button...Try it out

You're right, and wrong. You can unzip an .apk and mess with the images, then rezip it back up and rename it to (yourapk).apk from (yourapk).zip, you just need to sign it when you're done.
I haven't messed with anything entitled ".9.png", but if it's binary then hex editing it is probably the quickest way to edit it, otherwise there is a program called 'apktool' that can decompile apk's and is pretty effective, I've used it a few times

Pull framework-res.apk from your phone, to your computer's desktop. Use Winrar, or a similar archive extracting program, to open the file, then click Extract -> (some folder on your desktop that has nothing else in it)
Find the picture you want to change, make sure your new picture is the same dimensions (e.g; 320x480) and is the same type of file (e.g; .png) and replace the stock image with your custom image.
Once that's done, highlight all files and folders in the root of the folder you extracted framework-res.apk to -> (if using Winrar) Right-Click -> Add to archive -> Change archive type to .zip and click OK -> Right click on your newly created framework-res.zip and change the extension to .apk (you might need to open a windows explorer window and select tools->folder options->view tab->uncheck 'hide extensions for known filetypes).
Once that's done, you'll need to sign your new framework-res.apk. You can do that with EasySign. Download EasySign to your desktop, extract the archive and open a Windows Command Prompt (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt). You'll need the Java JDK installed.
Drag your newly created framework-res.apk file into your EasySign folder on your desktop and down the following;
Type the following, assuming you have Windows 7 or Vista:
Code:
cd C:\Users\(your username on your PC)\Desktop\EasySign
You should now see the following;
Code:
C:\Users\(your username on your PC)\Desktop\EasySign>
You should now type the following;
Code:
java -jar signapk.jar testkey.x509.pem testkey.pk8 framework-res.apk framework-res_signed.apk
It'll take a moment, then you'll see;
Code:
C:\Users\(your username on your PC)\Desktop\EasySign>java -jar signapk.jar testkey.x509.pem testkey.pk8 framework-res.apk framework-res_signed.apk
C:\Users\(your username on your PC)\Desktop\EasySign>
...and you should now have framework-res_signed.apk in your EasySign folder on your desktop.
Pull it to your desktop and rename it framework-res.apk and put it back where you got it, most likely using adb (if using adb, put it in C:\(your androidsdk folder)\tools and type the following;
Code:
adb remount
adb push framework-res.apk /system/framework
adb reboot
Alternatively, you can place it on your sdcard and use a program like Astro to move it to /system/framework and immediately reboot your phone for the changes to take effect.
Enjoy, it took me like 10 minutes to type this

I did that with the numbers on the dialer and the home launcher icon in the Tainted Vanilla thread. But there are other apk's that are a bit touchy. Once I learn how to sign them, I think it might open up a whole new world of skinning for me.
Yeh it would be good to get that down... it would open a huge door.. make things easier..
Question; in order for the above process to work, must you be rooted? I would love to change icons...unfortunately my naive-impatient self flashed the leak when it was first brought public.

Unfortunately you do need to be rooted for these changes to occur, however you can still do some customization with apps like Bettercut or ones similar.

Yes! Even coy and paste (except for changing the name of the apk I'm trying to sign).
I've downloaded the java link that you provided and installed, redownloaded and installed the JRE, rebooted. THe java site tells me I have the latest and greatest of everything.

Did you make sure to cd into the proper folder from command prompt? I've made this mistake a time or two;
Code:
cd C:\Users\(your username on your PC)\Desktop\EasySign>
^^ assuming you have EasySign in a folder called EasySign on your desktop, and that you change (your username on your PC) to your actual username.
Well I haven't had much time lately to make themes but I figured i got enough time to explain how. This is how i do it in windows 7.
1) First thing i assume that you already have androidsdk on the root of your C drive. Lets go ahead and add it to your system path. If it's not called androidsdk go ahead and change it to that. Now open up your startmenu, right click computer, click properties, then click advanced system settings, in the advance system settings select environment variables. In the second box down look for path select it and choose edit. copy and paste this
Code:
;C:\androidsdk\tools
in there. Click okay.
2) download the jre and jdk from here and install them. Now you need to add them to your system path so copy paste this
Code:
;C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin;C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jdk1.6.0_20\bin
to your system path just like you did in the first step.
3) Download apk manager from here. Now run it and when it says clean out all current projects click yes. Now thats ready to go.
4) Download an image editing program. I use gimp. Also if you don't have it 7-zip
your all set to go now so lets start over with the numbers
1) choose a mymode apk and extract it with 7-zip. Open up the res folder select a png that you want to change and change it with the image editor you chose.
2) when you've changed the images you want open up the original apk as an archive with 7zip. Then place the res folder of the modified unzipped apk into the archive and close the archive.
3) Now open up apk manager and place the mymode apk into the place here for signing folder click script batch choose no then type 15.
4) Now put the newly signed apk into your androidsdk/tools folder and close apk manager.
5) open command prompt and type this
Code:
cd\
cd androidsdk/tools
adb install whatever.apk
I'll update this with pics a more thorough guide.
Thanks to everyone that made this easy
reserved for themes to come
Thanks been waiting for a thread like this.
thanks, if i ever get any free-time between jobs and kid and fiancee i will look into this a little more
This is an awesome guide! I messed around with theming mytouch/g1 back when I had one.. so this will be great to make some themes for the slide..
One question though.. let's say you pull the nest theme.. theme it and re install it.. will it just override the nest theme or in the theme listing will it appear as a new theme and still allow you to have the original theme?

The nest theme is in the framework, its not an .apk like the rest, its built into the system. The rest of the mymodes themes are .apks and if you edit those they will override the stock "nest" theme. The only way it will show up different in the theme chooser is if you edit the preview snapshot to be a preview of your theme. If you wanna keep the original theme, the nest theme is it and you should edit a different theme .apk...

Okay so I got the next three days off and I already got two mymode themes pretty much done well their done but I just learned of a way to change the name so they are there own standalone apk instead of using another apk name. I've been using puppypride (which by the way isn't puppies those are full grown dogs) and switching out the pngs and you couldn't have the regular puppypride now you can have both
hope you don't mind but I did a mod of your themes and took out the bubbles since some people always create threads about it
Help with following guide
I am a newb at this so please don't attack me if I am doing something wrong. I have been struggling with following the guide posted to make mymode themes. I have successfully got up to the step of signing the apk file. I modified the files in the free_kick.apk. When I try to use APK Manager 4.8 and using the directions given the file just gets erased and nothing happens. My log file just shows errors. Any help with a more detailed directions one what to do in APK manager as I am trying different things and not getting anywhere. I use the option 15 like told in the guide. I can send my modified apk file to anyone if they can get this to work and get it installed that would be appreciated so much. I hope I can figure this out my own but thought I would try get help from the forums. Thanks in advance.

Actually the guide needs to be fixed a little because i'm guessing your getting compiling errors when using apk manager? But the best way to do this is to open up the mymode theme (using 7zip) as an archive delete meta-inf folder then replace the pngs with ones of your choice as long as they are the same scale. Then resign. and install
totally lost
I've followed these directions to a T and when it comes to using the apk manager i am getting nothing, please help
You guys that are having trouble with apk manager...its honestly not necessary to use Apk Manager for this. Mymodes themes are system .apks and shouldn't be re-signed. What you need to do is forget about apk manager (for now) and drop the UNsigned .apk into the ROM update you are using, and resign the whole ROM using the autosign tool created by jesusfreke. Or just adbpush the .apk. but don't resign the .apk.
Here's the link for the autosign tool to sign ROM updates. its in the THIRD POST and its auto-sign .zip, NOT the signing.zip in the first post. you can put it anywhere you want and you just drop (a copy of) your ROM update in the autosign folder, rename it update.zip, then run the sign.bat to sign. it will create another file, update-signed.zip. you shouldnt need to wipe when flashing the same ROM over itself, but i cant guarantee this is true for all ROMs.
you can also make an update that will only flash the .apk to /system/app, and nothing else will be changed. basically just make a copy of the update for the ROM youre using, then delete everything but the /system directory from the zip. then go into that /system directory and delete everything but the /app directory, then go into it and delete all the .apks and odex file or whatevers in there. ALL OF IT. when you are finished you should have an update with nothing in it but a /system/app directory. you put your modded .apk in there in /system/app, and thats it for that.
then you must edit the update script and remove MOST of its contents so that it only does what you want it to. THIS IS IMPORTANT! Go here to learn how to create an update script. what youll need is way simpler than the examples, youll want it to look basically like this...
Code:
assert compatible_with("0.2") == "true"
show_progress 0.1 0
copy_dir PACKAGE:system SYSTEM:
show_progress 0.1 10
this update script will copy ANYTHING in the /system directory to /system on your device, regardless of subdirectories. that means anything in /system will go in /system, anything in /system/app will go to /system/app, etc. but since you only have one .apk in there it wont mess with anything but what you put in there. this way, you have a NOWIPE update for...well, whatever you want to put in it.
so you just drop the new shortened update-script in /META-INF/com/google/android/
and then use the autosign tool to resign your new update then flash away! This also takes less time cus its only flashing one file instead of flashing a whole ROM just to replace that one file...
hope this helps...

I'm having issues with this as well... After I do the whole signing apk thing, it installs fine, but when I go to MyModes, the preview is black and when I select it, the MyModes app force closes. I don't get it.
Like the title says, this is how to modify your Notification title drawer on the Captivate with Froyo like Tatuyama's theme's drawer(notification slide) for the i9000. This will tell you how to make it transparent and add a graphic or change the colors. This has been tested on Cog B7, dont think it works on i9000 roms like Shep's. I can help you though on this if you absolutely are dieing to do it. It will just take a little fandanglin and searching but can be done. I ripped apart Shep's rom and found all of Tat's mods, I jsut dont remember them off the top of my head..
I have also attached the drop bars from Tat's theme and another black AOSP bar should you want to use it. I have also included a PSD file to modify to your liking, my APK's for the frameworks I edited below (these include the tat icons already inside), a blank black background bar to use should you want, and other goodies for your modding needs. I have also slapped some screenies below to get an idea of wtf I am even talking about. Also if you use my Frameworks be aware that I am using the battery mod version "I" from that one thread, injected Tat's icons and goodies, and other MISC things.
I will try to do this as simple as possible. I dont linger in the themes area so you are pretty much on your own. I am going to write this tutorial based on Windows O/S and Adobe Photoshop. Attempt this at your own risk. If you biff it up its not my fault. I wrote the directions as I did it, and I am working great with awesome sauce dripping from my phone. I cannot be held responsible if you are below par of the preqs listed. I assume if you are going to attempt it you are competent and comfortable with all things required. However, should you somehow mess up, I do provide some SYA (save your ass) directions below. That being said, Good luck and Mod On!
Prerequisites:
1) ADB Dev Kit and experience using it (push, pull, shell)
2) Photoshop or other photo editing software & experience
3) Basic Windows experience: cut/copy/paste/rename/zipping/moving files. (if you use linux you shouldnt worry as you more than likely are a power user already and can cross apply).
Step 1: We need to download the APK's off the phone and get them ready for editing (or yank them out of the ROM package you download).
1) open a CMD (command prompt) window type:
adb pull /system/framework/twframework-res.apk C:\
adb pull /system/framework/framework-res.apk C:\This will save the files to your root of C:. Should you want to do it elsewhere you can specify or else leave it blank and it will stick the files in your developer kit folder.
2) (OPTIONAL BUT RECOMMENDED! STEP) Navigate to where you saved the files, right click and copy/paste to make a set of backups of these files.
3) Rename the .apk to .zip files. You can also associate your .apk to a program like WinRAR or WinZIP instead. This will open APK Files by default or optional secondary(open with). This makes the whole thing a lot easier as you can open the file(APK) and leave it up, make the edits and drop them directly back into the APK. KEEP FILE STRUCTURE PROPER!
4) Extract the APK files to seperate folders or dig out the below files for editing.
Step 2: Editing the proper files.
1) Navigate to twframework.apk's extracted folder from above or these files you extracted.
2) Find and open sub folder /res/
3) Once in /res/ find and open /drawable-hdpi/
4) Once in /drawable-hdpi/ locate the following files:
- status_bar_background.9.png (actual background of the drawer)
- status_bar_header_background.png (this is the 5 icons across the top of drawer)
- status_bar_close_on.png (this is the dropdown bar at the bottom of drawer)
- quick_panel_list_bg_01.9 (seperator between carrier and application info)
5) Open these files in Photoshop(or another editor)
6) Verify these are set to RGB not Index color mode so you can edit them.
7) Edit the layers to make them transparent. If there are not layers, right click and "create layer from background". You can then edit your layer settings. I set mine to 75% transparency in Photoshop, the actual background to 85% to darken it up a little. This will take some tweaking to get it just perfect for you. Make sure you save them in .png format with the same name they started with and not the PSD or "copy". Also you want non interlaced if it prompts you.
8) Do the same steps for the framework-res.apk.
- status_bar_item_app_background_normal.9.png (not sure if this one is necessary)
- status_bar_item_background_normal.9.png (this is teh notifications)
Step 3: Put it together and upload.
After you update the files, you will need to inject them back ito the APK's where you got them (/res/drawable-hdpi/). You can do this by opening the APK with Winzip/WinRAR/7zip and put them in there or if you extracted the entire contents just zip it all back up. You will need to remove the .zip extension if you went that route. Also, make sure you open it after zipping and verify it maintains the correct structure or you will be doing the recovery shuffle after you reboot. If you see only 1 folder in your zip this is WRONG! You need to see assets, RES, META-INF, and 2 other files in there(manifests and resources). If you see all these then you are ready to rock and roll.
After you get them back together upload them to your device using:
adb push <location of apk you edited>\framework-res.apk /sdcard/
adb push <location of apk you edited>\twframework-res.apk /sdcard/
then in teh same command prompt window (or another, whatever)
adb shell
su
cd sdcard
cp twframework-res.apk /system/framework/twframework-res.apk
cp framework-res.apk /system/framework/framework-res.apk
reboot
It shouldnt take but a second to come back up. You are done.
It may take a little bit of editing of the files to get them to look OK. I spent most of my day today getting mine together. You can use them if you like the "hootie edition" or just edit your own.

That looks fantastic. I want your notification drop down and all minus the owl of course and text, but can this be done by using metamorph instead of having to adb everything?
awsome write up. Looks pretty simple and I will attempt this when I get home today.
This is an absolutely EXCELLENT tutorial. Props to you. I will be doing this shortly to all my Captivates in the house, 3 in use, plus the 4th one I'm using as a Dev phone.
Hi,
I've followed your instructions. After the files have been pushed up, my phone goes through the usual errors due to the framework change. The problem I'm having is that after I restart my phone, the phone gets past the galaxy s screen, but then it goes black and does not respond. Any suggestions?

To be honest I have never used metamorph on the Captivate. On my G1 yes you could acheive that. I googled the metamorph tutorial Junkdruggler did and it looks rather lengthy and involved editing XML files. You can find that info here. Also, the files you would need to do my way with just a blank one are above. Just download the closebars zip and the "blank" zip. Then mod/inject your APK - or hell mine from above- and push it to your device. This is a rather quick ordeal.

THIS IS HOW TO SAVE YOURSELF
Well, not sure what you mean "usual errors" with framework change? I havent ever had any issues with the framework replacements. I occasionally have then crash if I replace them while phone is on and not in recovery. A reboot fixes this though. Are you using a Cap rom or an I9000? This doesnt work on I9000 roms as thier APK's are slightly different- teh HDPI folder has a v4 at the end (IIRC). I can help you through this though if that's the case..
If it truly is a cap rom, I did experience a similar problem on my phone one time when I pushed the framework.apk. What had happened is I right-clicked the ROOT directory I had placed all the files in and said to zip it. This caused the folder to be INSIDE the zip. So the file structure went like this:
>>ZIP FILE I CREATED>>
--------->>FOLDER ALL FILES WERE IN>>
------------------>>FILE STRUCTURE OF THE ORIGINAL APK>>
Which should have been
>>ZIP FILE I CREATED>>
--------->>FILE STRUCTURE OF ORIGINAL APK>>
To better explain it- If you open the zip you created, do you see the RES folder, META-INF folder, assets folder, and then there will be 2 other files? Or do you see 1 single folder? If you see 1 single folder you zipped it up incorrectly. You will need to go into the folder and select all-> right click-> zip (send to-> compressed folder). This should fix it. If this isnt the case something else went horribly wrong. To fix it we will need to restore the original files you hopefully backed up. If you didnt back up you still arent totally hosed- just redownload the ROM you are running, open it up and navigate to the /system/framework folder and pull out the original frameworks. Then follow these instructions to get them back on the device.
Step 1:
A quick way to get out of this situation is to take the copies rename them back to twframework-res.apk and framework-res.apk (or pull from the original rom package as mentioned above).
Hopefully you have the 2e recovery kernel, as you need it to get back to where you started. If you cant do clockwork, well you may as well odin cause you are a few flashes behind anyway.
K, so first you will need to download the update.zip I have included with this post. This is the clockwork recovery file. You will next need to put your phone in reocvery mode. to do this do:
adb reboot recovery
Step 2:
Next you will need push that file you downloaded to your SD. to do that you need to:
adb push <location of downloaded>\update.zip /sdcard/
Now, once in recovery- tell it to reinstall packages. This may reboot the phone. If it does, tell it to reinstall packages again. This should get you to clockwork recovery.
Step 3:
once you have a green clockwork recovery screen, you will get the chance to SU via ADB SHELL. You can then repeat the pushing of your ORIGINAL fles back to your phone and retry the process.
You could also pull the files you pushed to see what went wrong- but do that first as if you push before they will be overwritten with the original files.
Looking into doing a little custom work but before I do. Like Tat's theme do you need to edit XML files for specific things like the pop ups being black. Or do I just get the naming right and put the proper PNG in the apk.

This is only for the notification drawer and not the actual pop ups. If you want to edit the popups you will need to edit the XML files.
Thanks for the quick response. I might have to dive into all the XML edits.

The one problem though is the AT&T (carrier part) at the top is also transparent and you quickly notice it looks a little strange with your items not transparent. I tried to live with it for a little bit but ended up modding the rest too.

The quick panel is actually the part that says "Notifications" or "On Going" below the AT&T part. THe AT&T and clear button is part of the actual background peice. So what happens is the AT&T part becomes transparent, while the notification peices are solid. It may not bother you but it bugged the crap out of me. It's personal preference really..

I was able to take the Cog Beta 7 framwork and Tat's framwork. I pulled out all the changes from his theme and put them in cog beta 7. I actually did not have to edit any files and was able to apply it.
I had to change a few file names around so all the backgrounds / pop ups applied to the theme. I left DG's background.
I don't want to post it since it is not my own work but if you want to take a look at the framwork and twframwork I can send them PM.
notification bar??
What file is the actual notification bar with the battery/clock/etc... would it be inside twframework-res.apk or framework-res.apk?
EDIT: Just set background transparency to 80% in photoshop and changed the color to black. The transparency seems ok, but it resembles minimalistic theme too much... gonna fiddle with it some more today.

Hey Malfunction,
Finally got it working past the galaxy S screen, thanks for the info. One last question, then I should be out of your hair. Where can I change the settings for the media scanning icons? Currently, the white default icons are showing, but I'm trying to change that to the black SD card. I'm going to look into it myself too; figured I'd ask though.
Thanks,

Good deal, glad you got it working. What was the problem?
As for the SDCard- depends which you need. In framework-res there are these 3:
stat_notify_sdcard.png
stat_notify_sdcard_prepare.png
stat_notify_sdcard_usb.png
I had to do some hunting to find out which program was the running process for the Media Scanner. It is "MediaProvider.apk" on your /system/app folder. I edited mine and it now works and has all the Tat icons loaded. Thanks for that heads up I hadnt noticed that little piece before you mentioned it.
I looked at Tat's ROM section and also saw that he has edited these, may consider if you are wanting to mimick his:
DownloadProvider (Market)
MediaProvider (Media Scanner)
Vending (Market)
PackageProvider.apk (Uninstallation Screen)
GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk (Google Search)
at first, it would be nice if any mod can modify the title to: [HOWTO] 1% battery mod on gingerbread and delete all following posts.
further i'm sorry for my poor english - hopefully everyone here can follow my steps!
the hard thing on changing battery icons on gingerbread is, that there are only 7 steps: 0, 10, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100... that means you have to edit or replace two xml files (more later).
IMPORTANT: please make a backup of your rom! i'm not responsible if your device won't boot after modding! also it is possible that your google/facebook etc. accounts are deleted after flashing back your modded framework. but you can easily readd them again!
WHAT YOU NEED:
apk manager from here: http://www.multiupload.com/GXW01G6URJ
battery icons or a framework-res.apk with your desired icons
a rooted gingerbread rom
your original framework-res.apk (guide to extract later on)
WHAT YOU GET (IN ATTACHMENT):
stat_sys_xml_dateien.zip (stat_sys_battery.xml and stat_sys_battery_charge.xml with 100 steps)
framework-res.apk (modified by me with circlemod battery (i hope it's okay to use them in here! btw. many thx to devs (was it mdj?) for this icons). THIS FRAMEWORK WAS ONLY TESTED BY ME ON MDJ GINGERBREAD 2.2!!!
screenshot of the circle battery mod on gingerbread
FIRST STEPS:
extract apk manager to a a desired folder and conenct your phone to debug mode
start script.bat and change kompression level to 0 (type 19, afterwards 0)
type in 0 to download framework-res.apk from your phone. it asks for the path, type: /system/framework/framework-res.apk and hit enter
if asked for a name, type framework-res.apk and hit enter and confirm with Y to be your current project
type 9 and hit enter to decompile your framework and wait until it's finished
have a look in the folder "projects" - there will be a folder "framework-res.apk" now.
navigate to the subfolder: res/drawable-hdpi and delete ALL png files with the name stat_sys_battery_X.png and stat_sys_battery_charge_animX.png (while X stands for the according number). do this also with stat_sys_battery_unknown.png and stat_sys_battery_charge_animfull.png (IMPORTANT: delete last two ones only if you have a replacement icon or you will get errors on compiling!!!)
also delete following two xml files in subfolder projects/framework-res.apk/res/drawable: stat_sys_battery_charge.xml and stat_sys_battery.xml
now it gets tricky:
depending on the amount of your custom icons you have on charging, you may have to edit your stat_sys_battery_charge.xml file and delete or add the percentual steps! if you have 100 custom png's for charging animation, you can use the stat_sys_battery_charge.xml i attached (it also includes a stat_sys_battery.xml with 100 steps if you need)
now it's time to paste your modified/downloaded stat_sys_battery_charge.xml and stat_sys_battery.xml into subfolder /res/drawable/ (where you deleted the original of gingerbread before!)
go back to apk manager and type 11 to compile your framework
when it asks "is this a system apk?", type Y for yes. confirm again with Y and let apk manager create a new folder, called "keep". a list of files appears, and after that DON'T CONFIRM!!!
first you have to navigate into this "keep" folder and delete again exactly what you deleted above (stat_sys_battery_X.png, stat_sys_battery_charge_animX.png, stat_sys_battery_unknown.png, stat_sys_battery_charge_animfull.png, stat_sys_battery.xml, stat_sys_battery_charge.xml) and ADDITIONALLY the file resources.arsc
now you can confirm in apk manager to complete the compiling process. as far as i know, these steps with keep folders are needed to include the right id's automatically in public.xml! if any errors occur, feel free to post your log in this thread (see log by typing 21 in apk manager)
flash your new created framework-res.apk by entering 8.
if you didn't anything wrong, you should have your new % battery icons after reboot! as mentioned before, your desktop background maybe messed up and/or your accounts are deleted. you can solve this by just readd accounts and change background again.

Thanks for the tutorial. Question though, is this for sd builds or for nand? Or does it not matter?
it is only for nand-builds. on sd-builds it should be similar, but afaik you don't have to adb the framework-res.apk. you should find here a lot of threads about modifying sd-build statusbars, because it is not that hard like on nand builds.
Cool, I'm using nand. Yea through sd builds thing stuff was easy. I couldn't change the compression in the emulator. How were you able to change it? Also is that framework at the bottom the one we use to achieve what the picture looks like?
Background changed and accounts gone as mentioned, but it worked perfectly - well worth it!
How did you change the compression when running the batch file?
Edit: Nevemind im retarded.
When i press the 9 to decompile it it gives me some B.S error Saying could not find C:\place-apk-here-for-modding.... The directory name is invalid. Could someone make this work on JDMS nand build?
Alos when i pull the framework res file from my phone it doesnt show up in "projects" Theres nothing in there. However it does show up in "place-apk-here-for-modding" folder..

the adb pulled apk files are stored in "place-apk-here-for-modding" folder, not in projects! a project in this folder will only be created after decompiling an apk!!!

you just get the statusbar at top (in fact only + battery icon). the bottom icons and background are custom with using launcher pro.

Hey Fruit Fly, any progress on that cwm zip?
not really. i forgot my hd2 at home (i do theme works at work) and couldn't test the cwm zip files. on sunday evening i can test everything and tell you whats working and what not!
rafpigna from #htc-linux-chat gave me another choice of flashing easy with an adb script (thank you for that). but some users on german android forum told me it's not working. have to bugfix the files first
Yea let me know the outcome;p
Does anyone know how to enable USB Mass Storage on our phones under CM10.1? I've searched around and found this thread. But since I'm not familiar with changing build.prop I don't dare to do it myself. There are some CWM .zip files around to enable it, but they are on other phone's forums and I'm sure they just replace/change the build.prop so it's definitely not a good idea to flash those on a different phone than the ones they were intended for....
Long story short, does anyone know how to enable it on ours?
TIA!
Update on the process:
I was able to edit the build.prop according to the instructions, but that alone doesn't seem to do anything.
So I decided to try the next step, but where it tells me to do the changes below I wasn't sure what to do.

I was able to find the framework-res.apk file, copied to my computer and tried to open it with an XML editor... looked too complicated so I left it alone.
Does anyone know how to mess with that?
Open the .apk file with WinRar
-Drag the file you want to edit on your computer
-Edit the file on your computer
-Delete the old file in Winrar from the apk file
-Put the new file from your computer back in Winrar and save the "new" apk file
-Put the new .apk file on your smartphone
Before you install the new .apk file take a Root Explorer and look at the permissions of the old .apk file and set this permission on the new once...
I hope i could help you

Thank you very much for your help! I didn't know apk files were just a compressed library of other files.
Now I am stuck trying to edit the "storage_list.xml" file... I tried to open with a few different xml editors, but could not get clean text like the example before. Any sugestions?
I attached the file below:

Well, how about decompiling the .apk file with APK Tools instead of just opening it with WinRar?
Yes, now I get a clean, editable, decompiled xml file.
I'll try editing both when I get home tonight and will post the results.
I guess this is a problem because of the emulated layout. There is a trick with setprop sys.usb.storage.config mass_storage but it does not work.
Keep me informed if you find something valuable (i'm on original CM10.1, latest nightly 0423 actualy).
Ok, here's the update from last night:
I started over since I flashed the nightly, which is good so I restarted with a clean slate.
- Edited build.prop - OK
- Copied framework-res.apk to my computer
- Decompiled framework-res.apk
- Edited storage_list.xml
- Recompiled framework-res.apk with new storage_list.xml
- Copied framework-res.apk back to my phone
- Deleted original framework-res.apk
- ...... instant restart & bootloop before I could paste the new framework-res.apk in its place
No big deal, just restored a nandroid backup I made before messing with anything and I'm back in business.
Apparently you can't mess with the framework-res.apk while your phone is on (with the OS running)... so now I need to research the right way to push/pull these files from ADB while on CWM recovery. I appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction since I'll be busy at work today.
To be honest, my gut feeling tells me that this is not going to work anyway. But look at what I learned so far... two days ago I wouldn't even think of compiling/decompiling anything... this is what XDA is all about, right?
Imho, the framework_res.apk and various tricks are all enabling or disabling a sys.usb.storage.config key. I'm not understanding nor finding informations about CM10.1 emulated layout, and if there are any reasons to forbid mass storage (because, yes, it seems it is disabled because it is not compatible).
This is something i have hard time with. On Android, you have tons of improvement for rom or kernel XY, but generally undocumented. If you apply this 'per device', the information is very fragmented and difficult to grab.
I was looking for a simple brief on base MTD partitions layout for LG P880, it seems the only way to have this is to dig KDZ files. Perhaps a Wiki would help the wannabe contributers like me to start ?

Flash the latest nightly. MTP is working and you cab transfer files that way.
Sent from my tree using a ladder
effectively, if you are flashing for USM, you should stay on LG stock.
I know that the topic got a little old but I'd like to refresh it since more people (e.g. Ubuntu users) could be interested in enabling Mass Storage.
What I've done is:
1) pulled /system/framework/framework-res.apk
2) decompiled it with APKtool
3) added
Code:
android:allowMassStorage="true"
in storage_list.xml
4) builded a new apk
then I've rebooted my phone into recovery and (@Apoena you may be interested in it - there is a possibility to access /system through adb connected with phone in recovery mode) pushed the new framework-res.apk. I've also changed the entry in build.prop to
Code:
persist.sys.usb.config=mass_storage,adb
Everything seemed fine until I've tried to reboot the phone: instead of CM boot logo I got a black screen. Anybody has an idea what went wrong (maybe something during recompilation of the apk)?
And of course sorry for any language mistakes, I'm not a native speaker
