Question about restoring after flashing - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey the question I have is, after Ive flashed a rom, in this case the update to SGSICS 4.2, is there a way I can restore my screens just the way they were before? As in not have to drag and drop all my apps/widgets back into the places they were before hand? I dont care if its an app or if I can do it through CWM im open to all methods if any exist. That to me is the biggest PITA about flashing. I appreciate your help.

Back up your launcher with tibu...it'll break the widgets, So you Will still need to place those back, but your dock and apps will be intact where they were.

4.1.999 gallery+themed google apps issues

gallery:
when i go to veiw a picture(meaning im looking at the picture) it wont rotate. bkmo said the problem was the stericson lockscreen. because when he put back the stock lockscreen it rotated again. so i think the solution there. but since the viewing isnt that big of a deal to me, plus i love the stericson lockscreen, im gonna keep my lockscreen so this is more for people wondering about the same problem...
google apps and themes:
if you flash a theme that modifies the google apps, flashing 4.1.999(and up) wont restore the stock app. clearly its cause he doesnt have the copies of the apps in there anymore. how do you restore? im not sure. i flashed a theme that themed my market red and black, then flashed his rom, then another theme, but the market stayed the same. im guessing that flashing the htc recovery, then the rom, will probably restore the google apps to stock, but im not sure if it requires a wipe.
does it?
because if it does ill just keep the themed market. its not really a problem, im just a little annoyed since im not sure if this has any negative effects. can anyone help on this? i dont wanna try because if i need to wipe, i dont have time to set everything up again. and i dont want to find out i did need to wipe and end up with having to wipe anyway. plus someone told me its possible to lose root somehow, and i only have 1 phone. otherwise i'd try this out myself for you guys. please someone try, or give some professional input on this. thanks!

Nandroid Backup and New Rom/New Version

Quick question, I hope I didn't miss this being answered somewhere else already. I like flashing different roms, and when I find one I like staying up to date with the latest version. However I'm sort of new at this and for a while I was just flashing Cyanogen's Roms, never needed a wipe.
My question is if I do the nandroid Backup + ext install a new rom, then restore that backup, is it taking me back to the previous rom that it was backed up on as well? If this is the case is there a way to pull the certain info and just move it into the new Rom?
The reason I ask is as much as I like doing this, it's somewhat time consuming setting up my shortcuts the way they were before, resetting my Locale (Program) situations, my scoreboard favs so on etc. Any help is greatly appreciated.
try "mybackup pro" from the market...
that will restore custom settings and apps to your new ROM
it may not do everything but its can get ya pretty close
Thanks

Thanks I'll give that a shot tonight, anything I don't have to redo is an advantage.

To Root or Not To Root? 2.2 Edition

Okay, I'm really on the fence here. I've got ADB working, I've read the warnings, I've flashed my previous WinMo phones about a hundred times. I am also getting annoyed at the missing market apps and the incredibly awful 3G uplink speed of the 2.2 test build in my area. My phone looks in no way shape or form likely to crap out, needing the warranty. So the round is in the chamber, hammer is cocked, finger is on the trigger.
Only thing holding me back is the idea of the official 2.2 update coming out tomorrow (or really any point in the first half of the week), and having to reverse everything I did (unlocking aside, I get that it's permanent, for now at least). Which all revolves around extra work. I'm not looking to flash other ROM's at the moment, just get access to tweak a few things.
So...3 questions
1) Since I'm just going to root the stock ROM, and edit a few things in build.prop, do I need to disable the online app and info backup? I'm 99% sure I read somewhere that unlocking the bootloader wipes the phone, but that's not a concern as I could just let the thing boot after unlocking it and pull my info from the cloud. This is for AFTER I root (though if you're responding, you probably already know that).
2) Any way to backup a complete system image, so that I can revert to that when the official 2.2 comes out?
3) Which SU/Rooting method do you, the knowledgable and expert [insert additional groveling] reader, suggest for FRF50? I've seen Cyanogen's and the one on Modaco ( http://android.modaco.com/content/g...-erd79-frf50-superboot-rooting-the-nexus-one/ ) I'm guessing this is a "doesn't matter," but I figure why not ask.
Was this the wrong section for this kind of thing?
I'm no expert, just have had my n1 for a couple of weeks but:
1. Can't help you there, no idea, sorry.
2. nandroid backup.
3. I've read a lot about this and I'd go with Cyan's method and amon_ra's recovery. It seems like they do the job well. Plus if you search around, you'll see instructions on going back to stock recovery from amon_ra's, but I'm not sure about the other recovery image (or whether it would be the exact same procedure)
1. I really don't understand the struggle here. Why you would want to disable app backup in the first place? It's not like Google is persecuting people who unlock bootloaders that they might cut you off if they see you're rooted. Just leave it running so you don't have to install everything manually. Unlocking does wipe everything, so it'll be convenient.
2. Well yeah... Make a nandroid the way your phone is now and go back to it whenever you like. And if you like, you can restore just the system.img from fastboot.
3. I prefer the cyan method with .34 kernel. There were some people complaining that Froyo was really slow for them, but I haven't noticed that at all.
^
1) Was because of things I've read, that if you do X, you should turn off backup syncing to keep from screwing things up. I certainly have no desire to turn it off. I love it.
2)Thanks.
3) Thanks
EDIT: Done. That was stupid-fast. From installing the fastboot drivers to installing SU was 90 seconds. Add 20 more for AmonRa's recovery.
Titanium backup installed.
build.prop edited to allow protected apps and fixes to the missing ril info.
Glad it turned out okay!
I'm so glad to be rid of Twitter!
Thanks you for your input.

A few questions regarding Nookie Froyo

I have everything the way I like it currently with the stock ROM. Apps, widgets and other customized things
1. Is it possible to backup everything, then restore everything to the 2.2 ROM using Ti Backup? Restore all apps, widgets, wallpaper, etc?
2. Flashing the ROM to internal eMMC, can the NC be restored to stock via the 8x reboot method?
That's all I'm wondering for now, I'm sure there will be more.
Widgets cannot be restored due to a system limitation. Second, speaking from firsthand experience you don't want to take information backed up on 2.1 and restore it to 2.2. I did that with my evo and I thought the phone was dying...everything was force closing and I had to reflash the rom. It was probably my restoring of the system settings(idiot move) that caused the problems but I wouldn't take any chances.
Yea, just me being lazy...
What about the notification bar? I like that is on the bottom. Can that be changed on a vanilla Froyo install?
bump..........
Hmmm...to get the notification bar on the bottom will probably take some hella coding but it can be done. Obviously B&N did it, also Acer does it on their Liquid ROMs (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=903470) but don't count on it being done here.
EDIT: That link I posted was just an example. DO NOT flash it on your nook.
we dont really bump your own posts here...

Flashing ROMs

Gotta question I can't seem to find an answer to. I currently have serendipity 7 on my captivate and would like to try different ones. If I do a backup using titanium backup, flash a rom, then restore from the backup, does it take the phone back to the way it was before I flashed it? For example the widgets on the home screen, settings the way they were...
Hi, the short answer is that you are gonna have to adjust your widgets and wallpaper.
If you want to find out more about it here is a good wiki.

good luck.
thanks a lot
