[Q] Terminal Emulator Commands - XPERIA X8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What are the commands for ternimal emulator? Even when i type help.. nothing shows up!

It's a basic Linux system sitting there below Android, so many of the usual commands work.
However, the default commandline uses busybox ... take a look at the busybox man page

Need more command line functionality and sshd

I was an iPhoner until I got my N1 yesterday and, wow, I'm in love! I'm still pretty lost, but I'm in a hurry to get some command line functionality going and the little bit of information seems to be scattered all over and hard to get a handle on.
I have the usb connection working with my PC running Slackware and have done Cyanogenmod and the terminal emulator is working. Here are the things I want to be able to do:
1) Get the terminal more functional. Most commands say "permission denied" and when I use su, it says they're not found although "echo $PATH" is the same for both users. whoami tells me I am "app_21" so obviously this isn't a normal user/root system. What do I do to get it more... normal?
2) ssh to and from the phone with keys. Normally you'd put the keys in ~/.ssh the have sshd running on the systems, but I'm not sure where ~/ is and don't see sshd anywhere. Can I do it with the N1?

Trying to learn ADB functions! Need some help!

I am trying to learn how to use ADB, so I can find the cause of a problem I am having on every 2.xx Rom I have tried, and I have tried them all!
So take a look at the screen shot, and you can see it finds my phone. For some reason thats as far as I have gotten, been screwing with it for 2 days but alas I have to ask!
Thanks for any help you can be!

OK, at a quick glance....
Instead of just typing "logcat", try "adb logcat". I think you'll have better luck.
Still looking through the rest, will edit in a few minutes.
EDIT 1: Don't actually put the "#" or the "$" on your command line. Those are prompts that the shell presents to you, not something you're supposed to type.
EDIT 2: Add the sdk\tools directory to your path. It will make your life much easier. You can get away with just doing a "cd" to that directory, but in the long run things will be much easier if you just put it in your path.
EDIT 3: "Operation not permitted"????? That command should have worked. Have you rooted your phone yet?
do adb "insert command here" logcat push pull install etc...
Cool thanks for the help subliminalurge, I think I got it now!
Now to start my bluetooth headphones with 1.5 and grab a log, then load up 2.1 and grab a log and see what the HELL is wrong!
Thanks again!
One last question, is it possible to save a whole string from CMD!
Also how do you do a dalvik wipe?
These are the 2 commands I have! Not sure if either one work or not!
DALVIK WIPE:
adb remount
adb shell
# cd /system/sd/dalvik-cache
# rm *
adb reboot recovery
adb shell mount /data
adb shell rm -r /data/dalvik-cache
I havent used adb since rooting my g1, since the release of the flashrec method.
Heres my noob question
Can terminal emulator do the same things as adb?
The only thing id ever use adb for is to push/pull, and i just use root explorer for that.
Jesus, youd think i became a senior just by spamming...
Terminal Emulator can not do the same thing as ADB. ADB is Android Developer Bridge (bridge as in computer to phone connection). Terminal Emulator, if you know Linux terms, emulates a Linux terminal on the phone... so, if you do "adb shell", you'll have the same commands as you would in terminal emulator... sorry I'm confusing

Lol i see what you mean.
You need adb to theme, dont you?
Windows man, through and through
(oh the irony, of being such an android patron...)

Terminal Emulator??? Access "adb shell"???

how do i use the terminal emulator app to access adb shell?
adb shell is only used when you're on a computer, like when using android sdk tools. When you use the terminal emulator you use different commands try This Link for some help using the terminal emulator, they're basically the same as linux commands.
also this should be in the Q&A section
lol the terminal is the 'shell'
if you're running a terminal right on the phone, then consider yourself already @root when you're typing in commands.

Sort of. You are a user, but not "root". To become superuser you have to use the SU command.
/ $ su

I'm sorry if I'm nitpicking here. Your original point remains true. You don't have to use ADB at that point to run commands. You run the command without ADB right in the terminal.

No, you're fine. I was just assuming that he was already rooted, but you're right - it's a regular user account unless you change to superuser.
in order to do what you probably want you will have to type su. It should then ask for SU permission and then you should gey
Code:
#
.
hello everyone, idk if im in the wrong place, but im trying to connect my non rooted phone to my rooted tablet with terminal emulator. Is there a way for me to use adb because it worked with my previous phone...its not working and isn't showing any device when i input "adb devices"...Can anyone help me please, help would be greatly appreciated ?(btw usb debugging is enabled on my phone)

[SCRIPT] Add BASH shell to your rooted Milestone

Don't know if this has been mentioned anywhere, but I'll post it anyway...
This utility will come in handy for those who use terminal emulators. "Bash" features command completion (by holding the center button on the directional pad) and can execute previous commands from history (by pressing Up on the direction pad).
Simply unzip the attachment to anywhere on your SD card, and, using a terminal emulator like ConnectBot do the following:
Code:
cd sdcard/[I]<folder where bash was saved>[/I]
su
sh bash.sh
Or, if you want to run from OpenRecovery, then unzip the files under /sdcard/OpenRecovery/scripts, then edit "bash.sh" so that the "cp bash/bash /system/bin" line is changed to "cp /sdcard/OpenRecovery/scripts/bash/bash /system/bin". To install it, use the "Miscellaneous->Run Script" option from OpenRecovery.
It will automatically take effect as your default shell the next time you start a terminal session or reboot. Or just type 'bash'
Thanks for the script , I havent had a chance to use it just yet but it would be extremely useful

No problem! It's a time saver for me... no more need to re-type commands or type out the long folder names.
Isnt busybox sh acting the same way ? whats advantage over busybox sh ?

I think the most visible is the permanent history.
Busybox has the permanent history as compile option but nobody cares to enable it.
For the rest the busybox's shell is more than enough for the limited usage on a cellphone.
oh this is awesome.
Gonna come in real handy for ro/rw mounting. I'd been cheating by throwing a bunch of common commands into the 'first command' line and saving different connection profiles in ConnectBot

*edit*
bummer, couldn't get Terminal Emulator to initialize the session. Attached is a zip with sh.sh to restore your shell to sh - actually, it just redirects the sym. link from bash to sh (sh0 binary), so you could use it to swap back and forth if you want - bash is left on the system.

[Q] executing adb shell scripts on Nexus One - No Laptop Required

Is it possible to do this?
how can i run script commands without having to connect my phone to a laptop computer?
I have root explorer app installed, if someone knows how to do it with that app please give me a simple tutorial.
also, i found this other app on the android market called "ScriptMe" by gilsken.
the app has no reviews, but the description doesnt say how to use it to execute scripts.
in case any of you haven't noticed, yes I am a newbie when it comes rooting phones, any help is appreciated, let me know, thanks.
Do you want to use adb natively on the phone or just general scripts? You can run commands and scripts by installing a terminal from the market, I think Better Terminal Emulator Pro is the best. I think you can run most adb commands from the terminal but I'm not sure if they all work. I mean, push and pull don't seem like they'd work without somewhere to transfer files to, but maybe they push and pull to the sdcard or something. I'm really kinda clueless when it comes to adb because I've only used it to root the phone and use standard terminal tools for everything else.
I think I tried ScriptMe. You have to put the script on the sdcard, select it with the app, tap "execute" then it says "script ran". I'm not sure how that's useful. The only scripting app I've found useful is GScript, but there is another called "Scripter" which stores the scripts so you can select them from a list to execute them. Kinda like a no frills GScript.
Yeah just use the terminal app. It comes loaded on cyanogen and most ROMs out of the box.
