Please help! - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys my rogers captivate is stuck in a recovery mode loop(it boots into recovery all the time). Could someone please help me get out of it.
This problem started happening after i tried switching from the team icssgs 14.1 rom to the apex 12.4 rom. I think the problem happened after I changed the bootloader to an att 1897 bootloader after flashing the apex rom.
I have tried reflashing the team icssgs rom and flashing other kernels but nothing has worked so far.
Could someone please help me out. I've searched hard but am totally stumped.

Yep. I don't think u can flash bootloaders while on ics, miui or cyanogenmod.
U need to use Heimdall/Odin and flash back to Stock and then go from there with the Apex install instructions. Check the Stickied Thread in the Development section about Odin/Hemdall Stock One Clicks.

[Q] DarkyRom 10.2 RE Issues/Question

Hey Guys,
I have a couple of questions in regards to going back to stock from DarkyROM 10.2.
After using 10.2 for about a month now, I have noticed that while the rom is fast, There are quite alot of glitches in my day to day operations. My 3D HD games no longer work smoothly (as they did in 2.3.3 with CWM), the phone will randomly freeze up when using the browser/gallery/calender etc. After multiple re-flashes I am coming to the conclusion that to get back to my original performance I may need to flash a stock JVQ and then mayby just us CF ROOT or something of the like to get CWM access.
My question is, what preparations need to be done before preforming this flash. Also, can the stock files be flashed with ODIN? Also, if anyone has any input on why DARKYROM 10.2 seems to have these issues, please feel free to let me know. Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!!
Phone Specs:
Samsung Galaxy Vibrant (i9000m)
DarkyRom 10.2 RE -w- KC1 Modem
Only Mod preformed after flashing RE was updating the SMS application to the SGS2 App to restore the chat bubble colors. The issues were present before this update. Did the update through DarkyRom Tool.
If you guys need any more information, just let me know..
Anyone??????
Alright, I'll take this one if no one else will. I too have the i9000m, and have learned all I can about keeping it alive and well. Going back to stock is easy. Go to general and look for the stock firmware thread. You will get instructions there on how to flash with odin. I've never used darky before but I did use CM7 and flashed back no problem. You could also look for Ramad's prerooted roms. I'm running one right now, UGKG3. Works great as I couldn't root it myself.

Hey Dude, Thanks alot for your response! One more question before making the switch....Should the voodoo lag fix that comes with Darky 10.2 be disabled before flashing with Odin back to stock?
If you want to go back to stock ROM. Before flashing disable the lagfix (for safe). You can download the firmware from www.samfirmware.com. and its an odin base installation.
Post your problem in www.darkyrom.com some expert will help you...
Hey guys.
I have flashed stock ROM (2.3.4) via Odin and worked absolutely fine. Didn't need to fiddle with the lagfix or anything. Simply popped phone into DOWNLOAD mode and flashed (with re-partition/wipe and backing up "stuff" beforehand).
The lagfix menu I think, is in the RECOVERY mode in the extended power options menu. I think thats the CWM with the DarkyROM maybe? Either way, you can enable/disable the lagfix in that menu.
Hope this helps!

[Q]Should I use CWM or odin to flash 4.0rom like romow?

I know this is a very stupid question but I just want to make sure flashing with CWM is viable.
For the leaked stock ics 4.0 rom I know I should use odin to flash, but how about custom 4.0 rom like Romow? Should I use CWM to flash the zip file?
Thx~
ps: I am currently running rocketrom v19 with CWM
use CWM n flash zip

You should read in the post how must it be done, you should start in annual kernel 3.9 then install chainfire.repack and so on

There are no instructions in romow's thread and that's why i am here to ask for any further instructions. I bet flashing a 4.0custom rom is similar to flashing Gingerbread rom. Am i right?
Also, some ppl claimed that I need to first flash the stock leaked 4.0 rom then have my phone rooted with CWM installed and finally flash custom 4.0 rom with CWM. Is that really necessary?

There are better roms now than ROMOW's one i think, try flashing Rocket Rom, or the new AOSP
From the instructions given in [02/24/12][Team Rocket ROM][open beta ICS v4.0.3][v1.5][15Tooglebar] daily ROM now! , it seems I really have to flash the leaked ics rom first before installing the rocketrom 4.0.3 rom, is that true? That means I cannot directly install the ics rocketrom from any gingerbread custom rom?

Just tried to go back to my CWM Backup....now I´m stucked at the bootanimation!
Do you guys know what could be the reason here? And what I could do to get my nandroid backup working again?

Did you flash 4.0.3 directly from gingerbread rom? BTW I've heard many people say their phones were stuck in the bootscreen(The samsung N7000 with no boot animation) when they tried to go back from ics to gingerbread. Seems this is a common problem....

Yes, I came directly from GB!
If you can load the boot animation that means ur phone is not bricked. You should try to download a stock gingerbread rom from dr ketan's post and flash it by odin pc.

When going back to GB, i kinda 'restart' the whole process by going back to Stock ROM via Odin, and redo the root and CWM.
Else, there are strange quirky issue ex. CWM just hangs while wiping the phone.
Hey Kelvin Fong & J.wong, thank you guys for your support!
Sorry for noobing around from now on...I´m not exactly the newest guy when it comes to these flash-things, but I have to admit that I´m kind of confused now...
I tried to find dr. ketans thread (this one?) but I´m not getting into his post (sorry for that, as I said: I´m confused!):

If You have Root + CWM - then first find out original stock kernel (zImage file)
Now place this file in zImage folder, n repeat procedure(Initial CFRoot Flasher), which you have done at time of pushing CWM by selecting I am rooted already
Now unroot with above said unrooting tool.

The first thing I´ve made evertime in the past was to read the full-noob tutorials...for some reason, I can´t find something like that for the note!
May I kindly ask you if you know a thread were these things (and perhaps the results after going back to stock) are explained from scratch again? Just want to understand what I have to do and how, it´s getting harder to find some information that are not based on years of flash-training

Should be this one(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997).
Firstly, download one of the roms from [Older ROMs (Directly Rootable)].
Secondly, follow the [Installation Guide For Older ROM ], the one using odin pc.
You may see below another flashing method using mobile odin, but that doesn't suit you since that one requires your phone rooted before and will keep your root after flashing. The one with odin pc will wipe out all your data and apps(of course not your SD card) and also unroot your phone. That means your CWM and root will all be gone and you have to follow another post to root it again(now this one:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360)
this one(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997)teaches you how to flash a rootable gingerbread rom, but not rooted. This one(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360)shows you how to root your phone and install CWM. I think these two posts are the best tutorials you are looking for.
I think you should download this >>http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=907734&d=1329574136
This one is better organized.
Thanks mate! Saved it to my desktop...but finally i was able to manage the problem by simply flashing a *fresh* RocketRom again (?!). I thought it would be worth a try...
Anyway: Thank you very much for your support, it´s good to still meet that friendly kind of people with patience here on the board (it´s getting less these days) hope i´ll be able to return the favor in future
You are welcome! Please note your binary counter may increase if you flash a rooted rom like rocketrom you've mentioned above directly via odin.

As far as I remember I made my very first steps with odin after I reveived my note (root, cwm)...rocket has been flashed by using cwm. But yes, my binary counter increased definitely...
...I do have a USB Jig, but in some was I am kind of afraid of going trough this! To fumble around in pure darkness...hmmm i don´t know
Have you tried it yourself?
Actually I've got a yellow triangle together with increased binary counter as I followed another tutorial guide(I should follow dr ketan's guide before).
I think removing the counter with a jig is way too dangerous for me so I don't want to risk it. Simply remove the counter only when you really need to bring your phone to samsung because maybe you don't even have to claim the warranty at all.

New to captivate, need help

OK, so I ran through all the guides and searched through what feels like a thousand posts. Here's my problem. I want to flash ICSSGS. Every guide I've read says I need to flash back to stock 2.1. I'm currently on the UCKK4 GB update. I used ODIN one click to flash back to 2.1, but couldn't get into download mode using any method (excluding JIG). So I used Kies to upgrade back to UCKK4. I can now get into download mode again. Can I just flash the bootloaders and a custom kernel from GB instead of being on Froyo?
No need to flash the bootloaders, you have the gingerbread ones thanks to kies, they work worth EVERYTHING so you do not need to ever flash bootloaders again.aahs i digest you don't, Cause flashing those is the only tine you cab hard brick.
Flash corn kernel with Odin right now on gingerbread, then boot into recovery factory reset and format /system, and flash the ics ROM twice. Bingo bango you're done.
Thanks. I'm just switching from a Sony X10 so things are a little different here. Every guide said start at 2.1 so I didn't think i could flash from GB. I want to try ICS, but the X10 builds are still alphas.

Most of the guides on here are getting dated. But for the Captivate, once you have gingerbread bootloaders you can flash pretty much anything from anything. Exceptions would be Cyanogenmod.

some people have reported that gingerbread bootloaders work with Cyanogenmod
He meant flash from CyanogenMod or any other MTD ROM to BML ROM
Again, thanks for the info. Maybe I'll write an updated guide after I get accustomed to this phone and ODIN. Flashtool for the X10 definitely spoiled me.

I have successfully flashed about 10 roms while having gb boot loader they include 2-3 version of cm7, two version of miui rom , and many more gb boot loader can run any older or newer rom on captivate no need to downgrade bootloader
I'm a quick learner. I just switched over from a Sony X10 that was running a MIUI rom. My wife bought an iPhone so I took over her phone. I'm still learning the ins and outs of the captivate and how it works. I'm loving this phone. It's capable of so much more than the X10. I'm also loving this ICSSGS rom. It's smooth as butter.

Newbie wants to flash a custom ROM, Got some questions!!!

Hello,
I've being reading a lot this forums and I really wish to Flash a custom Rom.
My steps so far:
I updated my Galaxy Note N7000 throught Odin to version 4.0.4.
Then I rooted the phone using CWM folling the instructions from dr.ketan.
Can I just simply flash a rom using CWM or should I downgrade the phone to GB? Do I have to flash a custom Kernel or no? BTW mine is stock.
I really wish to flash a rom but i dont want to brick my phone.
Sorry for my English, is not my main language.
Thanks
If you're familiar with using Odin and flashing ROMs like that, then I mostly recommend reverting to GB, getting root + CWM also according to dr. Ketan's guide. You'll find stock GB and how to root them in the Development Section Stickies
So far, the only 100% safe way to flash custom ROMs (ICS or others) through CWM is with a working Gingerbread CWM. Some would recommend flashing through Abyss Kernel, or flashing through mobile Odin.
Again, and this is coming from one of our top-notch devs... The only 100% safe way is to flash from a rooted GB.
Also, while we're on it, may I also recommend Cyanogen Mod 9 (you'll find it in the General section of the forum) and CM9 - based ROMs. They have a safe kernel, that means you can flash and full-wipe as much as you want from CM, without reverting back to GB. CM9 also gave me the best performance and battery consumption so far. Only disadvantage would be if you don't like the stock Android look and would rather have an S3 - feel or TouchWiz or whatever.
Also VERY IMPORTANT!!! DO NOT FULL-WIPE (Factory Reset) from your ICS!!! That's how phones get bricked, that's why you shouldn't flash from stock rooted ICS!
Best of luck and let me know if you need anything else!
Cheers and welcome to XDA

That mostly depends. Best way would be to either ask in the ROM's thread or in the kernel's thread. Some ROMs might recommend you flashed in the following sequence:
- Reboot into recovery
- Flash Abyss Kernel 4.2 Redpill (Original or custom logo, doesn't matter)
- IMPORTANT! Go to advanced => Reboot recovery
- Flash the kernel of your choice
- Reboot system
Others might recommend you flashed directly from the included CWM. Again, I'm not sure there's really a rule to this...
So far the only totally safe, non-headache kernel + ROM is Cyanogen and all Cyanogen-based, like Paranoid, Asylum and a few others. If you run those you can flash and full-wipe at will. With others, you should either ask or do a little thread-searching.
And also make sure that if you're running a TouchWiz ROM, flash a TouchWiz kernel. That's...really important, for obvious reasons and the type should be specified in the kernel's description or first post

Just go into recovery and do a full-wipe. If the problem persists, try another ROM.
Full-wipe should do the trick, though.

Uhm...I think you full - wiped from ICS... maybe accidentally flashed an ICS stock ROM instead of GB?
GB stock kernels don't do that...
First of all you should consider reading a few threads of people that have already been through this and gotten out ok.
Chances are you'll be able to flash a new ROM from there, but a little research is in order. I don't really know your exact situation (what ROM you have on and what kernel),and I haven't been in this pickle myself, so I may not be the best to advise you on this.
However, it is VERY unlikely that you're on GB... The emmc bug that you've described is typical for early ICS builds.

[Q] flashing stock with root via odin

My final goal is to flash Slim ICS, which I've done on quite a few galaxy s1 i1900 phones.
Here things went awry..
I'll try and keep this short - I tried something which did not work, have gone through the "phone--!--Computer" stage, flashed an AT&T stock rom through Odin hoping to be able to root it, install rom manager and CWM recovery and install my desired rom. This did not work.
On this AT&T rom I can't even find rom manager in the play store.
What I'm looking for is a way to flash a rom and kernel via Odin, preferably rooted, so that I can then flash recovery and so forth...
Any suggestions will be most welcome!
Thanks
Why not use TRusselo's Flashing Guide ?? It is up to date.
There is no need to get Root first in order to flash a Dev Rom.
