[Q]Rooting and updating for my SGN - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi every expert and non expert for rooting SGN,
kiddo here got some simple questions need helpout, thks in 1st.
my country: malaysia
my divice: Samsung galaxy note
divice age: about 1 months plus, still got about 10 months original warrenty
android version: 2.3.5
baseband: N7000DXKJ3
kernel version: 2.6.35.7-N7000DXKK1-CL706642
[email protected]#2
root status: not yet root before
latest update: not yet official or non official update before, but just got a sms regarding new update has arrived, still thinking want to update or not.
question:
1.i just want to root the divice for some rooting required app like gamecih. etc. any suggestion on it? it's better with tutorial on step by step. by the way, my divice have't link to pc before, and my home pc has no internet line=.=, they are normally use for game playing.
2.about the update, should i update 1st or rooting 1st? and after rooting can i update anymore in the future if there is a new update?
3.after update or rooting will my app, data, phonebook etc. will gone too?
4.i heard that in galasy note, if u rooting it the samsung company will notice it, but last time when i was using LG optimus one, with the rooting using "One Click GingerBreak" app, then i sent for repairing at the lg company, they still accept it.
how do they find out? is there anyway to prevent them form knowing i have root the nate?
sorry if the above question is so noob T.T,but i really hope that u guys can help me out. a hundred million TQ to all of u guys, kiss kiss, and happy valentine day!!

1. Here's DrKetan's comprehensive guide to rooting your Note:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
2. Do not update, root first. New updates are not directly rootable, you're better of with your existing Rom for rooting purposes.
3. No.
4. Do your rooting carefully, following DrKetan's instructions to the letter, and you'll be able to unroot your phone should the need arise.
Hope this helps.

Just want to add line for answer for Q2 n 3
You can update over OTA but it will erase your root.
N in case of manual update
Wipe or non wipe depends on ROM you are updating. If ROM which you installing is wipe version, it will wipe off data, if it is non wipe it won't

You can always install Google Maps from the Market. I have no idea what the software would remove, maybe just downloaded maps? If so, the come back when you use the app.
ADB drivers are needed for the USB connection to your PC. Search on this form, there is a link to the correct ones for the Note.
The prompt to install 'companion software' will be on the phone, I believe. I have never seen it, so am not sure, but to me 'device' means phone, not PC.
Good luck!

I think this msg is for some device which have very small rom. You hav nothing to worry for note, it has still more than 60 mb space empty, n root just need 1-2mb only. Nyway you hav not to do anything with map.
Installing latest kies enough to install adb driver
green - ignore this msg

You hav to root first, if you update over kies or ota, you will lose root, as well you can't root it anymore. B'coz newer update is not direct rootable. So you have to use cwm or mobile odin to update as well keep root intact.

How to root VZW Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 LTE
RECOMMENDED METHOD
07/09/2014
Working root method by geohot. This is now the recommended method!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2783157
CAN ALSO WORK ON VRBMI1
It has been said the following root method: saferoot
Has been able to root VRBMI1. Give this a try before using the system image below.
****
!!!!WARNING!!!!
Many of you have been complaining about broken wifi and other issues.
I do not own this tablet anymore, which means I can no longer support it.
Verizon/Samusung released a new update: VRBMI1
Check your firmware version
THE LAST VERSION SUPPORTED BY THIS GUIDE IS VRBLL2.
IF VERIZON/SAMSUNG CHANGED THE KEYS THEY SIGN THEIR FIRMWARE WITH, THAN ANY ATTEMPT TO DOWNGRADE/UNLOCK MAY POTENTIALLY BRICK YOUR DEVICE.
This has been seen on the VZW Galaxy S4 and just recently the VZW Galaxy S3 (The VZW Tab 2 is a clone of the S3!)
If you are on the latest build (VRBMI1), then it is entirely possible things will not work. It is also possible the bootloader unlock may brick your device.
If the root method doesn't work, flash a stock odin tar for VRBLL2.
AGAIN... IF VERIZON/SAMSUNG CHANGED THEIR KEYS, YOU MAY BRICK!
If you are on VRBMI1 and have semi-bricked using this method, flash this stock ODIN image using ODIN 3.04.
DO NOT CHECK RE-PARTITION, FLASH LOCK, OR LED CONTROL

Are other apps such as TB, Terminal, or AdFree Android able to gain root privileges? If so, then Busybox Installer may have been denied. Check Superuser and remove it from the Denied list if it's there. After removing it, try again and make sure to tap "Allow" when it asks.
EDIT: Downloaded that app to test. SU asked if I wanted to grant SU permissions, tapped 'Grant'. All is fine. If it's NOT in the SU denied list, Force Close the app. Reopen it and it should ask.
This is awesome. Thanks! One thing - is there a way to stop the OTA update nag?

Thanks, I did that. I also noticed in system/app there were SDM.apk and SDM.odix. I went ahead an renamed them SDM.apk.bak and SDM.odix.bak. I'm hoping this will get rid of the nag notification. One last thing - the update tried to run overnight once but CWM stopped it. When I woke up the tab was sitting on the CWM screen. Since then every time I reboot the tab it acts as if dalvik cache was cleared (I get the "android is upgrading - optimizing applications" screen before the tab loads). I think OTA set a reboot/clear cache flag somewhere I need to clear, but I don't know where that is set. Any ideas? Thanks again.
That will get rid of it. As for the reboot issue, have you tried clearing cache? Or even a factory reset? Factory reset won't hurt your root any nor restore the update app.
Thanks for the reply - Yep. I factory reset a couple days ago and made the update changes mentioned earlier. I no longer get the OTA notifications (YAY), but every time I restart the device it still rebuilds cache. I've formatted the cache partition, cleared dalvik cache, and as I mentioned, I tried a factory reset as well. This is the only hurdle I have left to clear. Out of curiosity, why are there no custom roms for the VZW version of this device? The VZW version doesn't carry the same model numbers as the retail models (GT-Pxxxx). The verizon device is simply SCH-I705 - there don't seem to be any roms for that. Isn't the only real difference the radio? I've asked around the forums, but not gotten a reply from anyone on this. I'd love to try some custom roms on this tab, and I'm sure that would fix the majority of my issues, but I have yet to find one.
There is actually a big difference between the wifi and lte devices. The i705 is closer related to the i535 (gs3) than it is the wifi tab 2's. And there are no custom ROMs yet becuase there are so few of us that own it, and even fewer (two of us actually..) who are trying to get anything done on it. I'm a novice developer so I'm still learning the process of ROM development. On top of that, I'm very busy working two jobs, saving up for a wedding. Unless someone else is capable of getting more development done we may only have 1 or two custom stock roms floating around, which is what I'm working on ever so slowly. CM10 and the others a bit out of my league right now.
If anyone wants to try to bring more attention to this device, feel free to do so. It'd be helpful to have people who know what they're doing more than me.
MrHyde03 -
Thank you so much for the detailed information. That is exactly what I've been looking for... exactly THAT. Congrats on the upcoming wedding by the way. That's awesome.
I might be willing to donate or lend a device to the right person if potential exists for that to result in a working Rom.I wouldn't know where to begin on that. I am in the Seattle area but can ship if necessary. I like CM10 and have Paranoid Rom (based on CM10) running on my GS3 and I'd absolutely LOVE to have the same features on my SCH-I705. I have the tab mounted in my car and It's a really great device, but the stock rom is HORRIBLE. For one, this 'loud volume warning' (whenever playing music over headphones or line output, it decreases the volume because, according to Samsung, I'm not a big enough boy to make my own decisions with regards to my own hearing) is driving me absolutely crazy. My GS3 did the same thing, but since I've rooted and loaded custom roms on it, I've loved it.
Thank you again for being one of the few to reply to my questions and for providing these details, you are appreciated.
I'm getting this:
Step 1 - Pushing files...
failed to copy 'debugfs' to '/data/local//debugfs': Permission denied
failed to copy 'su' to '/data/local//su': Permission denied
failed to copy 'debugfsinput' to '/data/local//debugfsinput': Permission denied
failed on '/data/local/tmp' - Permission denied
link failed File exists
Rebooting...
Once your devices has finished restarting,
Press any key to continue . . .
Step 2 - Rooting...
For this step, ignore any error messages that say "File not found"
Unable to chmod /data/local/debugfs: No such file or directory
/system/bin/sh: can't open /data/local/debugfsinput: No such file or directory

Rooting FAILED! You may want to try running this tool again.
Your device region may not be supported if you see this message again.

Could this have anything to do with me not yet having a sim card for the device (region??)?

Looks like we're having the same problem.
Yeah we have the same exact error. I am tempted to try manually pushing the root files through adb. I may have to call the banners though. Perhaps Liquid would be willimg to help.
Damn, if I had only seen this before I went TO the Verizon store, lol.
Oh well. I was just going to root and get a ROM out for everyone.
If anyone finds root let me know and I can start ROMS!
OP: You should put "not working" in title so people dont fill the thread with.. OMG it doesnt work!

[Guide] Rooting the Nexus 7 - 4.2 (JOP40C)

Preparation:
Open your device manager(PC)
Control Panel -> Device Manager
Remove literally everything to do with Android/Electronics a.k.a
Nexus, Android, Nexus 7, Androids, HTC, HTCDrivers (you get the picture)
Next Step
Plug your Nexus in, CHANGE THE SETTINGS TO CAMERA(P2P) not MTP
Also ensure USB Debugging is checked.
Getting the required program:
Now, download the latest WugFresh toolkit.
Direct Download (Goo.IM)
Wugs Site
Once Downloaded:
Open ToolKit and Click "Full Installation Drivers with guide"
Choose the PDA.Net method.
Follow the Guide and let the drivers install, it should also install PDA.Net at the same time (on PC) which should appear in bottom right of screen (PC Screen)
When Drivers are Installed:
Once the drivers are installed, go to the ToolKit again, under "Build Type" choose "Nakasi All Build TYPES **"
Rooting:
Now, when your build type is set to all build types, proceed with "Root", follow instructions again and it should reboot into a "Temporary TWRP", this is great.
Flashing Necessary Root Files:
Navigate to SDCard, ReadyToFlash! and find BusyBox and SuperSU, flash them using TWRP.
Clear Cache
Reboot, VOILA!
IF IVE MISSED ANYTHING OR YOU'D LIKE TO SEE ANYTHING ADDED, LET ME KNOW AND I'LL GET IT DONE !!
This will work for all Android versions. The 4.2 specifics is getting the drivers installed to recognise the N7. (Also the CamperP2P not MTP)
I wanted to test but the download is too slow (2 hours).
Is the same procedure valid for Nexus 7 3g?
Thanks

I have a nexus 7 in 4.2 and I have been very successful in the root. However, it must accurately.
Disabled security options on the Control of Android applications and behavioral allow installation of application from memory, if the root does not work.
The interface of the application should be reviewed at ergonomic figures to describe the sequence of steps (1. 2. 3.) ...
Otherwise it is a good job, thank you again for sharing your knowledge.
Sorry for my bad english

You don't need BusyBox to root. I'd recommend avoiding it because it has been known to cause problems with system updates in the past.

BusyBox is not a MUST but its recommended.
It just provides more commands for Linux/Unix based functions. (Probably more useful for advanced users)
Would this work for JOP40D version firmware?
Can't see anywhere on here detailing how to root that version of the Nexus 7.

Thanks for the reply. I'm guessing I need to separately unlock the bootloader before rooting? I literally have no idea how to do this. I rooted my Droid 2 a while ago and it was dead simple, this seems a lot more complicated! Also, is this is the same procedure for the 3g nexus?

Hi All,
I wanted to check if i can root my Nexus 7 (16gb wifi) and continue to use the stock rom that is currently running ?
i.e. i want to use OrBot for proxy which needs superuser access hence need to root, but i want to continue using the stock rom that has come with Nexus 7. I couldn't find much detail on continuing with the stock rom.
Also can i use the "Settings"->"About Tablet"->"check for updates", when the next update comes even after i root my device or should manually update ??
Thanks,

[TUT] Root Galaxy Mini 2 without PC

Hi guys, this is my first tut here, about an alternative way for rooting my S6500D...
Q : Why do I need this? There is a better and easy way already using CWM....
A : This tut will only give you root access, without a busybox, CWM, etc. If you want Root+BB+CWM, please follow an other TUTs.
Okey, Here we go...
This TUT is based on "poot" exploit created by giantpune from androidforums.com (We should thanks him/her)
He/She create this exploit for LG Optimus Elite originally, but mod it to work for several phone model.
He said that this exploit will work on android version 2.3.5 - 2.3.7. Thats why I try this on Jena
Giantpune from androidforums, posted original application and some modded apk to work with other phone.
To respect his work and his thread, I only attached a working apk that root my Mini 2.
And provide his thread's link, so you can download all poot apks from there, thanks him and his team, and maybe donating him.
Here is the link : http://androidforums.com/elite-all-things-root/612914-optimus-elite-root-apk.html
Requirement :
- poot-debug.apk for h866c (Huawei ascend Y). I tried another version, but fail.
- Ministro II. You can download it from Playstore.
- Please remove your SD card.
Step by step :
1. Install Ministro II from Play Store.
2. Install poot-debug.apk for h866c. I already attached it.
3. Create Poot shortcut to Home.
4. Turn on USB Debugging in the Settings>Application>Developement
5. Open Poot, it will request to download some Ministro library. This library needed by poot to work. You will need an internet connection.
6. After all library downloaded, close Poot. Its better to reboot our phone first.
7. Let the phone boot completely. If you have much app installed, kill all running app, so nothing can interrupt this exploit.
8. Open Poot, tap "Press Here to Poot" button.
- If the phone reboot suddenly, try again this step.
- If Poot app show an error log, like error : 87 or 22, reboot your phone and try again.
- If it still fail, try to reboot your phone. When lockscreen showed up, immediately unlock it while system scanning storage. Open Poot quickly (thats why I want you to put a shortcut in home). Then tap "Press Here to Poot".
9. If Poot show log like "successfully push su file to /system/xbin...bla..bla...bla", then you have successfully rooted your phone.
10. After a successful poot, Poot will show 3 option:
- Get Superuser = it will open Play Store straightly to Superuser by ChainsDD page. Install it to manage root access.
- Get Root Checker Basic = it will open Play Store to Root Checker Basic page. If you want to check root access using this app, download it.
- Built-in Root Checker = Instead of download Root Checker Basic, you can use this built in feature.
11. After Superuser installed, dont forget to update su binary file from it.
12. Its done!!! now you have a rooted Mini 2.
Note: I have tested original poot for LG Optimus Elite, Cherry W100, and PCD Venture without success. If your phone can not be rooted with poot for h866c, I advice you to try another versions.
The advantage of this method :
- This method of rooting will not increase your custom bin, because you dont need to flash CWM.
- You dont need a PC to root Jena.
Disadvantage :
- You need to install/download Superuser by ChainsDD + BusyBox manually. This exploit only push su file (Superuser's su file by ChainDD) to /system/xbin.
Note: If you want to flash CWM, we need to wait mobile Odin compatible with our device. Therefore, if you want CWM very badly...I suggest you to flash it using PC.
Credits:
- giantpune from androidforums.com, who made the exploit.
- me, who try and test this exploit on Jena all night long :crying:
PM me, if someone should be listed on Credits
Really nice, very god man. But Triangle Away is working for our phones so there's no problem regarding bin counter
Thanks man
Yup, triangle away worked as you said. But I never try it yet tho. I bought a new Jena 1month ago, and I dont want to loose my warranty.
Thats why I search another way to root safely, without worries
Maybe this tuts dedicated for someone like me, who didnt have a PC or notebook yet.
Well that's something new. Portable rooting where you're in a car without CWM?
In all seriousness, it's great to see great things show up for our Jena, like this and MIUI, and TWRP, and CM 10, and OC Kernels, and many other stuff.
It's you people who make this phone awesome.
I have a question, is the "su" binary the latest one?
Yup, we hope Jena community will grow up like mini I
No, it is not. We need to update it to the latest version, after Superuser installed.
Iam still figuring out how to migrate to CWM superuser tho. Its Open Source, and looks like better security.
BusyBox can be installed downloading Busybox installer from play store
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=stericson.busybox
and maybe CWM can be installed with mobile odin (i don't know)
i am saying this because I am an admin of a spanish blog and many people ask us for a way to root and install CWM without PC,
Maybe I miss spelling something...
Or you dont understand what I mean
I mean superuser.apk by clockworkmod, or koush's superuser.
If I want CWM, I will not root using this method
Yup, thats busybox installer that I mean
I was only thinking in a way to install CWM for users that don't have PC. I am a admin of a Spanish blog and many people want it.
And in sOme other devices ROM MANAGER can install CWM. maybe it's possible with mobile Odin or rom manager, I guess
Rom Manager can brick the mini 2, because it's not compatible with mini 2 I think.

Yup, i heard that rom manager can brick mini 2.
My best bet is mobile odin.
It is compatible with ace plus.
And mini 2 almost the same with ace plus.

Ive done that too. Already dump and send it to chainfire thread.

Finally, I didn't send it because I am using squadzone's kernel, so maybe it's different
But maybe it'll be useful to send one using CM10 (is more compatible)
I read somewhere that mobile Odin works on Ace Plus which has exactly the same partition layout as Mini 2. Also, since we don't need any specific file which contains the info about our partition layout (like ops file for some devices) while flashing something, it's pretty generic therefore mobile odin should work.

Finally, a confirmation from a genious person
Maybe yes sir, it should work for our device.
But chainfire's mobile odin wont let us use it, if our device is not compatible.
Maybe, just maybe, (I dont know how it work ) mobile odin read our build.prop and compare them to it's device compatibility database.
If those not match, it just showing black screen, and an intructions to dump a log, then close it self.
Hopes he/she make it worked for Mini2 someday

write private msg to chainfire mayby he do MO for Jena, but in OP chainfire i see many spam and hm 4 post from galaxy mini 2 users, this device is not popular and low range so chainfire do not even think about develop app to this phone. its my opinion...
well, yes, this is not popular. For reference, my latest CM10 build for Mini 1 is downloaded like 20k times. When I uploaded the first CM10 build in the first day it got 5k downloads. Mini 2 barely get 1k downloads in months. Mini 1 is quite popular, even after 2 years of its release. Perhaps it will change after camera is fixed.

[Q] XT890 JB 4.1.2 - Rooting procedure worked but device not rooted. Offer donation

Hi guys,
I have a Motorola Razr I XT890 with Android Jelly Bean 4.1.2 (see screenshot). It was already updated to JB when I bought it from amazon.de (without mobile contract). I want to root my phone in order to run a firewall eg. by LBE Privacy Guard or by Avast!
Before installing any apps or changing settings I unlocked successfully the bootloader via the Motorola website and followed the instructions from theunlockr.com (theunlockr.com/2013/03/16/how-to-root-the-motorola-razr-i). Therefore, I downloaded the CMW from “turl1” (dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/553461/recovery-razri-tryAtouch.img) and the rooting package from “mattlgroff” (batakang.com/ftp/RAZRi/RootUtility/RAZRiRoot2.zip) and carefully followed the instructions.
The whole procedure worked just nice and in the end it said that rooting was successful. After re-booting, the SU app was successfully installed and LBE and AVAST! were granted SU rights.... BUT unfortunately, I still cannot activate any firewall since the phone has still no ROOT privileges. I installed the OTA Rootkeeper that confirmed that the device is not rooted.
Did I miss something? What can I do to fix this? I can offer you many "Thanks" and a donation in case you solve the problem.
Cheers
personally to make root download the JB package is installed via fastboot us and follow the tutorial served me very well this rom is istala pillama the same way by fastboot hope and help serve you luck

Since you're unlocked bootloader, I would sugest you to install Omar-avelar ROM's.
Download the ROM zip and make a full phone wipe. (System, Data, cache, dalvyk, etc) and the factory reset. Then install the zip.
It's based on JB 4.1.2 EU, and it cames already Rooted.
(don't forget to make a backup of your stock ROM. You never know when Murphy's going to attack.)
You are suggesting..

Hi Thanks for the tip. I found the thread but this seem a rather dramatic step since this ROM introduce many crucial changes in JB and I am not sure whether I would be comfortable with this. Do you think it could work as well if I install instead a retail JB 4.1.2 US and try rooting again? But I'lll keep this option definitely as a good plan B.
Cheers

[How-To] Root and unlock the bootloader of the Nexus 4/5 without wiping data

This is a tutorial on how to root and unlock the bootloader of the nexus 4 without wiping any data!
Note: I'm not responsible for any damage on your phone! You choose to do these modifications and you are responsible for any problems!
I tested this on Android 4.4.3, but you may try it on other android versions, too. Please report if it works
Devices you can root using this app:
- Nexus 4: 4.4.3, 4.4.4
- Nexus 5, 4.4.3
1. Install the towelroot app (xda thread) from the project site! Please thank geohot, he made this possible!
2. Open the app and click on "make it ra1n"
3. Wait 15 seconds and the phone will reboot!
Congratulations! Your phone is rooted now!
4. Install either SuperSu or Superuser
a) In the app update your binary the "normal way" (without a custom recovery)
b)
1. Install BootUnlocker for nexus devices to unlock your bootloader! In the app, click "unlock" to unlock it!
2. Now you are able to install a custom recovery like TWRP or cwm
3. Boot up your system again, open SuperSu or Superuser and update the binary (using "TWRP/CWM")
This is it! You're rooted now and you can easily unlock/relock your bootloader using the BootUnlocker app without wiping any data
Note: This was not my work! I just wrote down some steps to root and unlock
How to unroot:
1. Reflash the stock recovery image/stock kernel/etc (only necessary if you are running a custom kernel/recovery/etc)
2. Open BootUnlocker and lock the bootloader. Now you are able to uninstall the app!
3. Open SuperSu -> Settings -> Full unroot. This will unroot your phone and the app will automatically be uninstalled.
4. Reboot and done
noob clarifications
Hey, came across your post in another post where you mentioned this method would prevent the posibility of the phone being wiped when unlocked + rooted via "traditional" methods using a PC w SDK etc. Phone at present is locked, unrooted stock Nexus 4 kitkat 4.4.4 stock.
Just wanted to clarify a few points since this is the first time I've come across a method where the phone is rooted and unlocked from within itself (I've rooted and unlocked a HTC desire back in my heydays).
--- Do I need to unlock the phone if I just want to change the kernel from stock to the Matr1x kernel? (I had taken unlocking as a given as it was the first step in every guide - there is no mention of steps on how to actually install the kernel but I was going to research that process once root and unlock was done successfully)
--- Any chance you can give steps on updating the binary the 'normal' way? (never done this before)
--- How do you install CWM using your method? Again, I have only seen it being installed via command lines from the PC
Apologies in advance for the dumb questions but searched and couldn't find any clear answers for those steps that I'm not understanding

1. To flash a kernel you have to unlock your bootloader, that's right. You just flash it using your PC and fastboot, there are many guides on how to do that
2. If your phone is rooted and you have SuperSU installed there'll be a popup and it'll tell you to update the binary before using the app. You are able to select the "normal" way then without a recovery
3. You can install CWM/TWRP using your PC in fastboot mode!
No problem, just ask :good:
Can the usual commandline methods for other things be used after this?

If you mean fastboot commands for example to flash another kernel/recovery/etc, yes! There's no difference between unlocking using this method or another "old" one, but this one doesn't wipe data

yes. can also be used flashify to flash recovery.img without PC
I think I'll give it a try then (assuming there's no risk of bricking my phone or doing irreversible damage). On that subject, is there an easy way to lock the bootloader and unroot?

I apologize for asking so many questions but what exactly is "updating the binaries". Is that just for the app itself or does it do something to the phone?

These two are basically the same, as they are apps to manage the superuser permissions of other apps. You may use the one you like
That was easy
Of course I don't see this thread unitl after I spent the last hour setting everything up in Ubuntu to root the old fashioned way! Used this and was rooted in no time.
