When I take a screenshot on my phone, it looks fine on the phone, but when I plugin my datacable, and tries to export them to my computer it isn't a valid image file.
Windows Photo Viewer won't open the file, and when I try to upload it to a image host, it isn't recognized as a image.
You need a better picture viewer that can handle png images. If it's a must, they can be converted to jpeg or whatever.

I've tried with IrfanView and uploading it to multiple image hosting sites like TinyPic, but they won't recognize it as a image
Maybe the screen shot file header got corrupted and your phone can handle it but not PCs?
Have you tried an online image converter to convert to a different image format?
Something like: http://www.pictureresize.org/online-images-converter.html
Same thing to me. But the problem is that on the phone the ss occupies 90kb's while when i copy it on pc it has 0kb. Something is wrong hmmm. I sent it by email to myself to get it

Hi!

Hi all, i am trying to work on a theme for the Droid X. Can anyone tell me why some of the images open in photoshop incorrectly and more to the point how to fix them?
I cant post a link apparently to the image or a http link since i'm new but
You can view the image here. http:/ / dl.dropbox.com/u/6769503/8bit.jpg
Is there a setting or something I can change in PS to open these correctly?
Thanks for your time.

What is the original file extension? .png?
I had this same problem with some .png files wich had transparency in windows image viewer, but not in photoshop.
My solution was to open it in Paint.net and save it, rewriting the original image. Please be sure to set the transparency correct whilst saving in paint.net.
Download Paint.net
Thanks for the reply, yes it was a PNG, ill try paint.net but i would really like to use Photoshop. I cant understand how it can mess up the transparency and anti alias like that.
Update: Paint.net does indeed open the file correctly... so while i do now have a solution. I would still like to find out why Photoshop (both CS4 & CS5) open it incorrectly ?
Well technically 8 bit pngs are indexed images with a varying amount of colored pixels and then varying amount of transparent and semi transparent pixels so some programs might not like this. I would recommend gimp over ps as its similar but doesn't have this issue.

that image actually seems correct, can you post an image of the alpha channel? then we will know if photoshop is not reading the file correctly
As one poster said, it's because the images is indexed. If you do Image > Mode > RGB, it will un-index it. I must warn you though, PS is HORRIBLE with indexed images. Use GIMP/Paint.NET to un-index it to save yourself a headache

Ahh but then you lose the 8 bit optimization, even running optpng will not put it back to index png cause it will ossy optimize it. So just use gimp.
Thanks for the replys guys.
Here is an example image.
http:/ / dl.dropbox.com/u/6769503/btn_circle_pressed.png
If you open it in PS, you will see what i mean, changing it to RGB does not change the image. I can open it correctly it Fireworks, then save it without making any changes, and then i am able to open it in Photoshop correctly.
This will do for now in case anyone else runs into this issue. The file size isn't too much bigger this way, so it will work for now.
Thanks again to all that helped.

Here's the image fixed, it was indexed... all I did was open it up with osx Preview and save it again. Or you can try this gimp they all talk about but I think it's overkill to switch to another program just because 1 or 2 images are weird, especially after you paid for your copy of Photoshop.

Thanks for your help. I don't have OSX and i absolutely cannot get used to Gimp. but opening it in adobe fireworks and saving it again right away does the trick, so although it's a pain, its simple to do.
If anyone ever figures out a way to directly open these types of files in Photoshop i'd be glad to know.
Cheers

Yes that works but your removing the indexing. Android uses indexed pngs wherever possible because this saves space and resources, if you changed every file in the android system to rgba your phone would be noticeably slower.
If you change it to rgba and then run optipng on it you'll see it will not index cause it can only lossy optimize, but if you set the mode to index and then optimize it you'll notice then file will be considerably smaller with little or no image quality loss. So in short your removing a vary important optimization feature of the android system.
If your looking for a quick image conversion tool try image magick, this will allow you to write scripts to convert them png24/32 to png8 and back whole folders at a time.
well as we do with video it's always better to work with uncompressed, high res images. Then when everything is done and set in stone we compress and optimize without loosing too much image quality.
If i had to start a theming project I'll probably do the same, convert everything to high res, work on it then compress to a more optimized format.

Yeah for video thats fine, but in theming and specifically for this file gimp will allow you to work on the indexed file and you literally can not tell the difference with the indexed file being atleast 50% smaller. Maybe this would make sense with an image that has alot of quality or is high res but in this instance it a loss of time and added steps when the same could be accomplished with industry standard tools.
When I connect phone with a PC i cant get picture preview of a pictures that are on my phone. Thats very inconvenient because sometimes i want to transfer specific photo from phone to pc but I must open countless pictures until i find the right one. Does anyone know how ti fix this??
Depend on which operating system you are on:
for exemple, on win7 right click on a clear area in the folder, chose display and select the way you want to see all media inside
yeah, im on win7...i tried that but it didnt help, only thing i can chose is like large icons, extra large, medium, list view...i tried them all but only thing they change is the size of the icons.

Mosaic should work.
If not, you have no software on your pc to generate a pics preview or your pics are corrupted (if they are ok on your SGS, try to associate files on your pc: right click on a pic, propertie -> open with).
Pics are fine, when i double tap them they open normally or when i go to properties also normal...thing im missing is Thumbnail of them so i could easily recognise them and copy on pc the ones that i want. The moment when i copy them on pc the thumnail is back but while the phone is conected to pc and and i want to see specific image on my pc (from my phone) thumbnail is missing so i cant recognise which is which except for the name.

When I go to gallery and see the selections for all photos, camera shots, then the various picture folders on my vivid, what is the factor that chooses which picture is the cover thumbnail for that folder? I know for camera shots it's the most recent one, but I can't determine what it is for the others. I'd like to manipulate a dummy photo so that it's always the cover thumbnail in a few of my "other" folders!
I can't find an option to change the top picture. You may have to get another album from the play store.
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using XDA
Another album meaning replacement app for "gallery"?
There must be a method to the way the top picture is chosen, whether it be size, date taken, name? Ideally is like to be able to sequester certain folders from showing up at all in the gallery, accessible only by file explore r!

Have you tried creating a blank '.nomedia' file in that dir? Just a thought...
I've changed the name of some pictures before however it doesn't affect which one is selected for thumbnail view. in root explore, the folder is listed alphabetically but in gallery view it seems to be by date created?..
Is there a way I can edit a jpg file so that it says it was created in say 2005 for example? Hopefully this will allow me to choose which file is the thumbnail

Can you go to the My Pictures/Pictures folder on your PC and find an old picture - one older than the ones in your album(s)? I know I have photos 8-9 years old on my PC.
Using Windows you can edit the "date taken" by right-clicking, properties, Details tab, edit Date Taken field. Apply. OK. See if that works
Every time I take an older picture and copy it into this folder, it changed the date modified field to todays date, which makes it no longer an older picture! I even created a new folder and copied all the pictures over, with the one I wanted as the cover first, but it reverted to the same order it was in before!
On my work laptop with windows seven I'm not able to edit the date fields, I can change some other info on the file but right clicking or double clicking the date doesn't do anything.
So this is not possible to change the picture that shows up as the cover of the folder album!

Try the QuickPic app. It's free I believe. I got it because the HTC Gallery app was displaying my shots in random order, not in the order I took them. See if QuickPic works better.
Looks better! Thanks for the tip. Any way to set it to default over "gallery?"
Like when the camera is open and I click the pictures that have been taken it opens gallery

I don't see a way to change the association between the camera app and the gallery app, both from HTC. You can associate QuickPic with photos. Using a file explorer app (I use Astro), go to a folder containing photos. Long press on one file name. You will be prompted to select from Gallery or Quickpic. Check the default checkbox and then select Quickpic. This may, or may not, help some.
As for date changes on the files when you transfer them, try Dropbox or a similar app. I use it for moving files between my PC and phone. The file dates don't change.
I really miss my Resco Photo Manager from my old Windows Mobile phone. It is much better than any Android apps I have used.
Thanks, I have drop box I'll try that!
any way to enlarge the photos IN Gallery? before the ICS update the gallery was easier to see all the pictures.. but now its smaller and hard to make them out before opening it
Hi guys. This might be a long shot and not doable, but thought I'd enquire.
Is there a way to add my own smileys/images/gifs so that they're integrated with all the the default ones and can be added to text, rather than attaching from the gallery?
Thought I'd experiment. I just downloaded the latest apk for whatsapp , 'com.whatsapp-212158.apk' to my laptop, renamed it to com.whatsapp-212158.zip and opened it. Inside the zip folder are thousands of .png files, and all the smileys are 48 x 48. When I then extracted the contents of the zip folder to another folder, the smileys are in a sub folder called drawable-hdpi-v4. Could I simply resize and add my own .png files, rename the folder to com.whatsapp-212158.apk, and install? Would it work?
Even if it did, every time I wanted to add new smileys, I presume I'd always have to work with the apk and reinstall on the phone, or is there a whatsapp file already installed on the phone that could be edited? Only files I see on the phone are three different msgstore.db.crypt8 files in the whatsapp database folder.
Thanks.
PS, I'm not rooted and it just ocurred to me that I'm probably going to be told that I'll need to be rooted to access any editable whatsapp emoticon folder?
What will it give you? Others will not be able to see it I guess.
I don't know, you might be right. Why might they not see it?

Because they have to do the same thing, for example if you change a (smile) (img15) and replace it with (wink) they will still receive it as a code (img15) and the application will transfer it to the original image .. a smile

You're right. But I'm not intending to change existing smileys , my intention is to add new ones which will have a new name ending in .png.
eg, xxx.png. Even though recipients won't have it to use themselves, they should be able to see it I imagine?

How can they see it if they don't have it?
When you send emoji using for example whatsapp you send a code not image and the application translate it.
Ah. In that case, I guess it won't work. Thanks for the help. :good:
