So, due to issues with my wife's Moto Backflip, Optus have given her a free upgrade and she now has the Galaxy s. On getting it, I tried to apply the one click lag fix found on the market. I found that it has the faulty 3 button recovery. Apparently some of them have issues being recognized by the SDK as well. So, at the moment I am unable to put a lagfix on her phone. So, I need to either find one that can be done without root, or a way to get it working with the ADB.
I use Ubuntu and have already added the entry into the android rules and have tried the "patched" ADB without luck.

I don’t want to root my phone. Am I able to use Voodoo anyway?
Absolutely. Rooting is reserved to power users knowing the risks involved.
None of the installation methods described require that you root your Galaxy S.
Note that in current beta2, a superuser binary is included to help debugging purposes; it won’t be the case in final builds.

Is there any work being done for a temporary Root option? I ask because it seems that I only need Root for certain issues!
Scenario: Access my hosts file, Tor...etc!
TIA
What is the benefit to only being rooted temporarily? Honestly there isn't a huge security benefit to it, and usability suffers because you have to root it when you want to do anything in your scenarios.
Why not just use SuperUser.apk and not have it remember any associations? That way you only authorize root privileges when you need them, but can stay rooted.
Temp rooting shouldn't even be released for this since we have a permroot so either root your xoom and leave it that way or stay stock
I wouldn't mind a temp root because I haven't rooted from the start, waiting for the 4G upgrade, and because fastboot oem unlock requires a wipe, I don't want to do it, then restore, then do it again. A temp root would be perfect.
I actually have to second Archon810's post. I also would like a temp-root solution so that I could backup my Xoom BEFORE fastboot oem unlock, due to the wipe. I moved all my games off my G2, and started playing further on the tablet screen. However, now I'm gonna lose all those save games. Kinda sucks...

Either I have completely forgotten how linux works, or you guys just don't get it. AFAIK there's no "temp root". You root, you're rooted.
Not getting what the issue is here either. With superuser you have full control over what app has root access and which not. Root access can be granted and revoked at any time. So certain "things" can have root access, certain not...

I believe people want something like the "temp" root achieved for Sensation: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15260896&postcount=1; it works quite well for me (no unlock required, one can disable unwanted apps, Titanium works).
"Temporary", since after rebooting updated parts of a locked NAND are overwritten and the changes lost.
This would be useful if you wanted to watch movies from the Market but still wanted to use other things that required root access. Reboot clean, watch movies, run root app, make backups.
My wife's MyTouch 3G Slide had a temporary root app that she only needed when she needed to use the phone as a WiFi Hotspot.

The only reason this is out, is because they don't have real root. And yes you can disable apps...but they are still there.

I still think a temp root solution would have been nice. Because I just rooted (which is less root, more NAND unlock) so I could upgrade to 3.2 and have full root functionality from MyBackup Pro. Some stability issues, but I will try reflashing in a bit. Would have really been nice to back everything up first, though.
Guys it seems like everyone is concerned about saving apps prior to rooting. Fyi- you can use Androidcommander and back up all your apps and install apps prior to rooting or after rooting. So if thats your concern problem solved...Don't root if your scared but when you follow directions its really a simple root and you learn a little as well.

This is also why the first thing you should do is fastboot oem unlock. You haven't rooted and all apps will still work. But if you decide to root later, you will not loose anything.

No no, I have my apps already backed up by MyBackup Pro. Its my APP DATA, the save games n'at, that I was trying to back up. Its a moot point now, for me, since I already bit the bullet and rooted, but it would have been valuable to others.

Not true at all. The Droid X could get permanent OR Temp Root from Z4root, as could MANY phones on froyo. It could Temp root 99% of phones on froyo or earlier according to the developer and the numerous people chiming in that it worked for htem. Some things i just want temp root, so i can backup or access some file. Otherwise, i don't need root full time on this tablet, didn't need it full time either on my Galaxy tab, which i also could Temp root with Z4Root. And did numerous times with ease and no problems
Some of us don't need permanent root. Why is that so hard to understand. I have full root on my X, don't need that on my tablet. Biggest reason is for what was listed, don't want ot have to wipe the whole device. That is just overkill and silly to me. If you want root with a Xoom you realy need to do it from day 1 so you lose nothing.

No offense but by saying that you don't know how linux works... If you are on the command line in Linux and type SU or SUDO plus a command after it you gain TEMPORARY ROOT for that command once you put in the password. It is TEMP, after that command passes you are normal user again. Yes you can root yourself full time, but that is a silly thing to do on a linux system and removes a lot of security. Not hard to plug in a password the few times you need to access stuff or edit things

that's my point, if I can root my HTC EVO without wiping why should I have to do that with my xoom?
Guys
Mybackup Root Androidcommander Titanium Backup can all put your rom back to where it was in minutes. It takes longer to.read why you don't want to root than it would take to restore IMO. Don't root of you don't want to but really do t use the my programs line..
No disrespect though just think with what we have today restoring is not that not big of a deal and after you root clockwork and nandroids are your best friends

Yup thats holding me back, too. Unlike my phones (Hero and Desire) I have not rooted my Xoom on the first day just because I was unsure if I would keep it. Now I am stuck in this mess while one side of me wants to root and install 3.2 and the other side doesn't want to lose all the progress made in the apps/games/whatever...
I have a feeling that I should probably post a thread of this nature in the development subforums, however I have nothing to present. What I'm looking to do is either modify an existing or build a new script which will root the Bell version of the Atrix HD which is on Jelly Bean. As many of you may know, the methods using Ubuntu, Motofail2Go and the various other options do not work. However they work partially for us. For example, when using Ubuntu I can get the message that I have rooted the device but it cannot copy the certain files (busybox, etc) to the device. On the other hand, MotoFail2Go also works to a certain extent, installing the sudoku.apk and the like, but the root either doesnt work or stick. With this being said, my question is how can I go about modifying any of these scripts or methods to work with 4.1.2 or is there anything I can do to help a developer with this issue? Any direction would be appreciated, whether it is me working alone on this project or with the help of other developers and community members.
Those other apps stick around because they're pushed to a writeable temp folder. If the exploit isn't working, I'm not sure tweaking a script will do anything to help.
Have you tried any other root methods?
The GS4 just got rooted and it hasn't even been released yet

As of now I've tried all of the published ways here on XDA and nothing seems to work for 4.1.2 yet it works for 4.1.1 which is why I thought that it would be possible to tweak one of the exploits in whichever way needed to root this slightly different (as it would seem) firmware. I'm not sure where exactly where to start looking when it comes to rooting the device, any help would be appreciated. Which files do I need to have on my device and where do I need to have them in order to obtain root?
i have previously unlocked bootloader and rooted my device using the Hasoons all in one tool kit and then had been using ard 12.1.
I then fancied trying the latest GE 4.3 release (stock) which i downloaded and flashed and all seemed fine however when i went to check root was still there i have the icon but get a message saying that there is no su binary installed. I have tried to use the toolkit again to go back the root procedure in the hope i can re-install what ever is missing however for some reason now the tool kit comes up with an error message in the box saying waiting for device or device not recognized.
I have tried to sort the problem but now feel i am just going round and around in circles and really dont have the knowledge to put it right as im quite new to the flashing and modding side and dont fully understand all the terminology, im sure its probably something really simple to fix for those who know how so would really appreciate some advice.
My overall aim would be to be running the stock rom (or might even try the new arhd 4.3 ge) with root so that i can then use the volume + to wake mod as i find this really usefull as my power button is quite depressed and hard to use.

hello you are in need of the new 4.3 superuser.zip
http://download.clockworkmod.com/test/superuser-4.3-beta3.zip
if you are using CWM, when it asks to fix su upon reboot, select NO
Wow thank you!!!!!
You have no clue, or maybe you do, how lost I got trying to root my HTC One. This is all new to me, but this forum has helped massively. I found that the supersu zip I had was the older version when I already had 4.3 uploaded before rooting. This community rocks!
why do my gapps processes keep crashing?
NM forgot to full wipe
So I have the same issue - my only question is that I am running 4.4 now. Does this super user file still work or is there a 4.4 version?
Just use "SuperSu" if you face any root acces issues

Hi there, Im new to the rooting world, I have a htc one m7 from sprint trying to sim unlock it, as far as I know I unlocked the bootloader, tampered it, and rooted, but no access to super user so I can sim unlock it. I downloaded and installed this App that you mention, but still keeps saying no binary updated, and with this 4.3 version says there was an error installing superuser. Please help, I dont know what to do.
I was having this same issue on my Note 2 (4.3). I seem to have found a way to restore root that may help you as well.
I think this issue may be caused by the SU app & binary updates. Uninstalling the updates has restored root for me.
Go to:
Settings > More > Application Manager > All > SuperSU > Uninstall updates
(menu options may be slightly different on other devices)
This will roll back SuperSU and hopefully restore your root access.
Let me know if this helps.
Any updates on this? I'm trying to get root on an HTC One M7 that I just purchased and I'm running into the same error.
Thanks!
It seems that I have root for...most...intents and purposes, but not when it come to things like xposed or next app so fix. Now I'm running 1.4.4.B.0.37 On Xperia Z1s. Rooted using flash tool, note... Does seem to freeze at the reboot part when it tries to install busybox so I manually install from marke. I had root for awhile then saw on xda that you could "proper" root by updating threw ota. Tried and failed multiple times. I have a screenshot of the error from xposed. Any help greatly appreciated.

Figured Out
Well, i never gave up and figured out the problem. Even though i had the newest version through OTA, it did me no good to revert back to last version since thats the version you have to "proper" root. Sooo, i downgraded...again...to stock (C6916_14.2.C.0.159_TMobile.ftf) then rooted and it worked. doing installs and checking as i type but so far viper4android and xposed are g2g. now to upgrade to next version (C6916_14.4.B.0.37_T-Mobile.ftf) for "proper" root. thanks and glad if i could help others with same problem. I think i will post a guide for z1s so others (seems to be alot of us) can have noob friendly guide. :highfive:
starting my guide...
I am starting my guide and wanted to know if there should be a specific area i should post it? Is the correct place here in the Q&A area? or in the Development area?
