Whats the big deal? - Motorola Droid Bionic

What is the big deal on ics...after installing ics and playing arouns on it, i dont really like it. I think the default moto blur is a lot smoother and has a cool animation to it. Ics was kinda boring and the wall paper did not move while slideing to different home panels. What really got me to uninstall you got to move the app to the top instead of just holding and clicking. The most important feature i use is the quick contact widget, which ics has something called direct call and message but in motoblur i get to select call or message in one block.
What do you guys think of it and also why is ics a big deal?

Consider making this home replacement.

I won't get picky about it.
But particularly I believe a world of a lot of g1 users, root and non root would really appreciate a home replacement that allows the user to do the following.
Choose which apps to show in the app drawer.
And the ability to move apps out into the "add to home screen" feature that shows up when you longpress the home screen/menu-add. In a new sub section called hidden apps/roughly around there.
So applications to prevent theft on the g1 could be hidden there over being spotted in the app drawer.
:]
Just an idea.
It is a good idea. Should post it in the dream applications+games section Though.

I was thinking that since the hero widget can't be ported to a normal g1 someone could try to use Sweeter home's layer option for an sms type widget similar to the hero.
I think it could work out very well since you can add layers and transparency.
An option to hide the apps in the tray would be nice!! I'm down for that.

Haha I know! Lately I've been bothered at having a very long app drawer, and apps like Photovault, password storage apps, and other not so commonly used apps would just fit beautifully in that new folder I'm suggesting.
I'm trying to keep this thread alive with hopes that a dev will see it and take the challenge so keep this thread alive :]
If anyone could do this, it would be the folks over at Better Android (OpenHome). In my humble opinion, they have the best home app on the market. You should forward this request to them!

I would like to, but half the time I've ever emailed better home they've done nothing but send me minimal short dissatisfying responses. But yea I use Open Home/have bought it.
Currently running Cyans build with the a hero theme or some widgets works fine enough with me.
But idk I think A home has a better go about things like this.
And of course Sweeter home is my favorite.
Yeah not sure why folders in the menu havent been figured out yet...I was almost sure someone would have cracked that missing feature long ago...
i would love a folder app or a tab app to put in the drawer,
you can hide icons, or make a whole tab of just games.
also, i wish there was a app that would lock icons on the main screens.
so nobody can move the icons unless you activate them.
anyone get my drift?
Better Android Says:
That's a good idea, although 'hiding' apps from the app drawer wont provide any securities because they are plenty to launch an app once you get pass the lock screen.

I sent him back an email saying that it would still help to weed out duplicates (like having a shortcut, and in the app drawer). I didn't get a response back on that one.
I would like to see this though.

Yea if we made a larger up roar about it and got more emails to the betterandroid guys they'd pretty much have to do it
Ive just made something like this.... you can "throw" away the application shortcuts from the app drawer and "restore" them using an added menu..

Haha rogro82 beat me to it.
I was gonna link his thread, but i guess he already linked his own.
Maybe you should provide screenshots and more details.
Thanks!
MY 2 cents
So far I love the suggestions and it sounds great.
Have you seen DxTop? I used it for a while and loved the one swipe to any of the 4 screens, maybe something like that. Maybe the ability to add more or subtract screens.
And always keep it fast.
I have heard that there is a mod that allows up to 10 screens, but I haven't found it yet. Please PM me if you know what mod I am talking about.
Thanks.

retske - Just so you're aware, the app that rogro linked to just a few posts above does all those things without needing to install bloatware (except for the "1 swipe" thing...what's a tap or 2 more?).

Launcher 7

I remember a thread on here a while ago where people were theming to get the Windows Phone 7 look. There's now a launcher on the market called Launcher 7 that does most of the work for you, you should check it out.

Definitely. If there's one thing that I'd like to see more of on the Market, it's more "alternative" launchers like this. Launcher Pro, ADW, Go, etc. all have their differences, but they're more or less the same in that they're all plays off of the whole multiple homescreen and a dock thing. It's nice to see new ideas out there. I remember a while back there was a launcher that showed all of your texts, email, facebook notifications, etc. in kind of an agenda view. It never really took off, but it's good to see devs think outside the box about the homescreen.

Because thats the core of how android to this point is intended to work. I like Launcher7, its fast, smooth and functional so I play with it here and there but the tile UI is comparatively bland and boring even with widget support (and the custom ones I've seen that arent bland and boring are WAY too busy). I'm gonna put it on my wifes phone since she'll love the big ass simple tiles concept.

without using custom images those 2x1 and 1x1 tiles (and the headphone/camera images) are all there is. I'm not going to spend anytime importing images because I like my android phone as an android phone and it wont get any use anyway. I was basically showing how the UI looks unmolested.

[Q] Hating Motoblur. What can I do?

I'm new to the Android scene (coming from a Touch Pro 2) and I'm really hating the Motoblur interface. Is it possible to install another launcher, or is that something that's hard coded in the ROM?
For some of it you can install a new launcher, ADW, ADW Ex, Launcher Pro are a few examples.
Any of them will allow you customize your homescreens more.
Curious wat you don't like about it? It seems very snappy to me. Much improved over previous versions of blur ui.
Sent from my DROID3 using Tapatalk
Its snappy and neat but not as snappy as a third party launcher such as launcherpro

I don't mind this motoblur but go launcher is still more functional for me.

i suppose i dont disagree... put the topic was that he was "hating motoblur", and while old versions were truly hate worthy, i don't find this version offensive! in fact if they had launched originally with this version, i don't think there would be much hate at all... LP and ADW are still better, and easy solutions for those who like more customization for sure!
The only thing I don't like about this blur, are the 4 launcher icons. Wtf 4? I want/need my app drawer button in the middle, and there's no middle with 4...
So, aside from that, I would be using the stock launcher. When will manufacturers realize people need options, and options are the biggest advantage over iphone. I would be perfectly happy with blur if I could add a 5th icon to the launcher bar.

I put Launcher Pro on my wife's D3. Apart from a very occasional graphics hangup on the homescreen (which may or may not be from Launcher Pro) it's working really well. She likes that the interface is cleaner, and I don't have to try and explain how "this icon with two squares represents your app drawer", heh! Using the Froyo Wide style for the dock, visually, makes a big difference in not being confused on her first Android device.
Only thing I actually kind of miss is the Moto's QuickContacts widget, which shows up invisible from within LP; and LP's people widget isn't very nice IMO.

I get the same graphic hangup on waking the device. It's seen as the desktop area being black while the dock is still visible and showing the wallpaper. Happens every time but clicking the app drawer or rotating the phone makes it go away. This happend on my d1 occasionally with cyanogen as well so I'm fairly certain it is Launcher Pro. Still can't live without LP as the blur home sucks imo.
I honestly love this blur ui. The blueness is awesome, The widgets are sweet, the icons are nice looking, and the 3d-ness is pretty sexy. This is all coming from a touchwiz fan tho

I didn't know you got a Droid 3. I loved your themes on the Fascinate. I'm actually getting one myself on the 27th. Can't wait to ditch the Fascy for it. Any plans on making themes for this when it gets root?
And I agree. The blur on the D3 is very nice. I've absolutely hated every version of it besides the D3's. I hate the TW3 launcher but like all of the TW features(like notification bar toggles). I love TouchWiz4.
Overall I don't mind blur at all. I wish they had certain features from the full blur, but I switch launchers like no tomorrow. I have ALL paid versions of LPP, ADW, Mobile Shell, and Go. I wish I could keep the favorites launcher from blur or find something similar to that.
Motoblur is now called "Motorola Application Platform"
Hahaha that sounds like "we don't want to call it Blur because everyone hates Blur."
Under "Operating System" on Verizon's page on the details screen:
http://www.verizonwireless.com/droid-3-motorola.shtml
Also, it's funny that Motorola decides to phase out the name rather than phase out Blur completely: http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/09/motoblur-name-phased-out-due-to-public-feedback/
And by funny I mean annoying!
But as the others have said, it's much less annoying than what it used to be. At least when you get your phone you don't have all of these stupid widgets everywhere preloaded on your screen. I really can't stand having all the VZ apps.
I actually liked the blur ui on this phone, but it seemed too laggy. I put launcher pro on and it has helped, but I still notice a little. I am thinking it shouldn't have any lag at all being a duelcore phone and all. Any settings I can change to help it?

I would definitely theme this when the time comes, I planned on it. I kinda dont know if Id want to theme it TBO, Blur is perfect (For me anyways). If someone ends up making an aosp rom or something I could probably theme that for the people that want to be de-blured. Im not sure how this phone will work theming wise.
I really don't mind blur on D3, way better than the blur on that defy I was tinkering with for a while, but I've been a loyal LP user since my OG. What I would like to see though is that quick contacts widget working in LP. That widget is slick, one of the coolest widgets I've ever seen, and I would use it alot. Anyone got any ideas on that?

True. There are a few changes I'd want, like making the menus black with white text instead of white with black text.
I got the D3 today. Of course, the one I get has a touchscreen that stopped working after activation. Waiting until Friday for the new one to come in. But, at least my DX2(Fascinate replacement, since mine has issues and I was gonna give it to a friend) came today and works so I have that in the mean time.
EDIT: Got the replacement in earlier. Loving this phone so much. It's extremely smooth and fast(even with Blur), and the keyboard is amazing. This is the first version of Blur I've liked. I would like root to remove V Cast apps and a few other bloatware apps, but meh, I can wait. At least Blur has app groups in the mean time.
Anyone know if there's a way to restore an old LP backup from an OG Droid?
I keep getting no files found... the backup's on my SD card... do i have to create the directory on my internal storage for it?
[edit] Ignore - Figured out solution. Simply copied the LP backup folder from my SD card to my internal storage and it worked.
Guessing since it mounds as sd where as the actual sd card mounts as sd-ext?

One and custom launchers

I was thinking about this. If we choose to use a custom launcher, we will likely lose blinkfeed, right? I've got a dozen or so Apex tricks that I have come to rely on. I wonder how this will work??
I know in the past when i used a One X using a custom launcher pretty much removed all the Sense apps so I could see that happening again this time
i must be one of the only people looking forward to blinkfeed!
i almost always had a sports news widget on my homescreen (though not the main one to be fair) and for a large amount of time twitter and facebook too - to have all of that on a dedicated screen (not even a widget) should be really great for me.
I'm looking forward to blinkfeed myself. I thought more people would love that feature. I think it's great.
Sense 5 is so sexy. Why would anyone want to install a different launcher on it?

My wife is probably going to love it. I would prefer to be able to move it to off center. I'm not totally thrilled with any FB or Twitter (-Caster is my favorite on both) widget, but I use them for feeds as well. I can see liking it, providing it's fairly customizable.

I'm going to give it a go. I only use 3 homescreens currently anyway and my default one if very sparse with only 4 apps. The idea of blink feed seems good, as long as it can sync with all the stuff I look at on currents I will be pretty happy.
Still no word on the menu button for legacy apps though.
Yes, using a custom launcher will mean you'll lose blinkfeed.
The only way around that will be to wait until someone has made blinkfeed into a separate flashable zip. At that point, you'll be able to set up your custom launcher as you'd like and then I guess you'd just be able to flash blinkfeed to have the functionality of both.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on this.
HTC Widgets only work on stock launcher, I don't see why Blinkfeed would be any different.
M.
Far as I can tell blink feed is another screen on sense. No sense=no blink. Personally I hope a dev can get rid of it. I don't need a news thing and I don't use Facebook or twitter so it seems kinda useless. Id like to see a messaging panel on it with a quick reply like on the Ubuntu touch where its in the notification.

I am looking forward to trying out blinkfeed as it now follows holo guidelines and they have dropped the horrid 3d look for a much more modern flat look and if I don't like it I will put on a custom launcher.
Does anyone know if you can move the blinkfeed to another home screen as it would in my opinion be much nicer in the middle screen so you can swipe left or right for widgets/apps
It is one of the things I like too. But I also like being able to turn off icon labels, create my on gestures, etc. in Apex. Seems like it might be kind of like switching to an iphone -- if you want blinkfeed, you lose ability to customize.
Meanwhile, I'm sittin' on my hands until I see a few audio reviews.

Hi. I pre-ordered and already have my hands on a shiny new HTC One, and BlinkFeed was not one of the reasons I bought it. One of the first things I did after getting the phone was installing Apex Launcher. I use its gestures too and I like the customizability it offers. Thankfully for me, BlinkFeed indeed goes away with a custom launcher

Day one with HTC one

Hi all,
I'm coming from and SGSII and I'm in the process of trying to setup my One how I like it. There's a few things troubling me though.
-The blacks of the screen don't seem especially black and it seems there's no way to adjust the contrast. The whole screen seems a bit flat/grey
-The menus are black text on white, I much prefer the white on black of the SII
-The scroll 'brakes' too quickly as your finger comes off the screen, it's like sliding something on sandpaper as opposed to ice. There's no 'mega scroll' flick
-I've had to download a task manager killer but I cannot end google+, gmail and googlemaps. I don't want them.
-The icons on my SII are a lot better
-I'd like the notification bar to be black
-On the SII I have gps switched off but weather apps still work, with the HTC gps has to be on.
-I'm going to have to root this phone to get adfree aren't?
I'm using nova launcher so a lot of things are similar but those things above are really bugging me. I've googled all of them and had no luck so let me know if I'm missing anything.
Thanks.
I didn't read your whole post but to get white text on black you are going to have to go with an inverted Rom, like d3rp or 42One I am sure there are others but those two come to mind.

Thanks, I might hold off on rooting for a while.
The main thing I wanted to check was that I wasn't missing an obvious settings and that the screen was working properly, it's VERY flat and grey compared to my SII.
Overall it's doing a good job but the screen is going to have to take some getting used to.

This is the difference between AMOLED and LCD. The contrast on the One is pretty much the best available on a phone LCD, but it is still an LCD, and cannot match the black levels of AMOLED.
-The menus are black text on white, I much prefer the white on black of the SII
The menus on the SII are white on black because white is a very expensive color to display, battery-wise, on an AMOLED screen. Inverted roms, or themes, will fix this for you.
-The scroll 'brakes' too quickly as your finger comes off the screen, it's like sliding something on sandpaper as opposed to ice. There's no 'mega scroll' flick
Depends on the app you're using. If you're speaking about within Sense (settings, app drawer, etc) then yeah I guess, but I'm not sure why you would need the long scrolling in such short lists.
-I've had to download a task manager killer but I cannot end google+, gmail and googlemaps. I don't want them.
Uninstall/disable them via settings>apps or kill them with an app.

Thanks for taking the time, much appreciated. Much as I feared the about the screen. It's a shame, I do really like OLED. Those are the two big things now, the screen and lack of centre button. It's stupid because most apps now have a black bar at the bottom which takes up about 10% of the screen for the 'options' button. A button would be much better. If it had those two things it would be the perfect phone in my eyes.
Makes sense about the menus, I checked out the 42One rom and it looks pretty good. I spent yesterday getting everything set up so I'm going to wait to root and flash.
The scroll/flick behaviour is a bit different but some lists do have a 'mega-scroll' so that was me I guess, I'd still prefer it if it was a bit looser.
I found the only option was to disable certain apps, I guess I won't be able to get into removing stuff until I root the phone.
Maybe I should have said i don't like the stock icons, I still prefer the SII one but have since downloaded some icon packs so we're all good there.
On my journeys I saw someone had written a little program to guide you through rooting your phone so I'll have to find that again. I'd also like to backup my stock setup in case of warranty issues further down the line.
Thanks again.

You can use the HTC Logo as menu button. But you'd need a custom kernel that supports that.
AMOLED displays are usually very over saturated compared to IPS LCD displays. But IPS will give you a more accurate color and truer whites and blacks.

The HTC logo doesn't have a capacitive sensor, the "logo button" feature actually uses the first row of pixels immediately above the logo as a button.

Yep, it's the tradeoff you made when you picked LCD.
If its any consolation, displaying white on your S2 actually caused the display consumption to go up drastically (sometimes double the power required) while on LCD the screen uses a much more consistent amount of power. The whites on your One -should- appear as truer whites, while yes, the black will be more washed out.

You can use the HTC Logo as menu button. But you'd need a custom kernel that supports that.
AMOLED displays are usually very over saturated compared to IPS LCD displays. But IPS will give you a more accurate color and truer whites and blacks.

Useful to know, thanks!
Thanks for the input, being brand new to HTC I'm still learning what's available.
Ideally I like Nova so I'd like to keep that. I'd like the general menus to be white text on black BG, I can clean things out with Titanium and stop ads with adfree.
From what I can tell I'm going to need to root the phone and then install a rom.
Are there 'pre-optimized' roms? Are there any Roms which are basically stock except for the colour flip? Can I get 4.3 in there as well? That middle button would be great too. My SII came with swype, I miss that.
I've found instructions on rooting but a little unsure which rom to go for, konfuzion's suggestion of 42One looks ok but I don't know what's out there, supported and up to date.
If you have any more thoughts they're always welcome
I'm gonna need some help on this guys.
I'm in the UK on the EE network, can I download any rom or do I need a specific 'EE' one?
Do I need a rom if I just want superuser privileges and a reversed/inverted menu? (also be able to install titanium backup and adfree)
I think I can handle the rest of it.
Thanks.
Well you most likely have a gsm one so you wouldn't want to flash anything in the sprint one section. And seeing as your gsm i believe there are a few roms over there that are 4.3
