[Q] Can anyone tell me the meaning of dalvik cache? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey friends i know how delvik cache is used in the cwm but after wiping it i dont know what actually gets wiped so any help regarding it would be much better ...

Still waiting for the answer ?????

"dalvik cache is a program cache area for the program dalvik. Dalvik is a java based virtual machine that is the bases for running your programs (the ones that have the .apk extension). In order to make access times faster (because there's not JIT (just in time) compiler installed by default), the dalvik-cache is the result of dalvik doing a optimization of the running program. Sounds confusing. It's similar to the prefetch files in Windows."

well that was confusing but thnx a lot for the info

Wiping Dalvik-Cache error on 1.6?

Does wiping Dalvik-Cache have a negative effect on 1.6 donut roms? I was always under the impression that it causes market to crash (as i have performed numerous tests with my 1.6 rom to see if it had any effect).
Also, could someone tell me where dalvik-cache is located and what files are deleted in a normal wipe of data vs. a dalvik-cache wipe via recovery?
Thanks in advance.

stock 1.6
dalvik-cache is
/data/dalvik-cache
CM4
/cache/dalvik-cache
if you wipe /data all files on data get removed, including dalvik-cache
and the market problem you describe is with cm4 and dangerspl
danger spl's cache is only 30mb , the dalvik-cache fills up /cache and leaves no room for market to download to
so some people hacked it by symlinking /cache/dalvik-cache to /data/dalvik-cache
but if you wipe cache ( with a factory reset ), it returns to /cache getting full again and market can't download
better to use a stock spl with CM4 OR these days use cmtd and have one large data partition
I hope that puts to rest any doubts you have

[Q]clearing dalvik cache cause apps disappeared?

I have been facing this problem for long time.
Every time I update the build of cm7, cleaning dalvik cache will lead to some apps disappear and never come back.
How can I fix this?
This is a very odd problem because the apps should not be sitting in the dalvik cache
Is it always the same apps or is it just a few random apps?? Are you using apps to sd??
Try fixing permissions. If that doesn't help, go with a full wipe and clean install...

How to clear Dalvik and Regular caches without rooting?

Hi Guys....
How can I clear Dalvik and Regular caches without rooting the Bionic?
You don't need to worry about the dalvik cache but theres an app called superbox that allows you to clear all of your app caches at once.

Thanks for your help. Problem is, that even if I do a factory reset, apps like VZ account management still remember my account info.
I have a feeling that dalvik is holding the cached info. I am still not rooted and wont be until the end of next week. I want to see if there is a way to delete dalvik without installing any other software and not rooting.

If I remember correctly, that info is stored in the /data partition, not the /cache or /dalvik partitions.

Cache and Dalvik cache

Have been using JB ROM from Elitemovil for two months now and noticed that the phone is now slower than before.
Can I just delete the Cache and Dalvik cache from CWM recovery and count that all things and programs will work fine after I restart the phone?
And - BTW, can both cache's be deleted anytime without any future problems with installed programs or any other setting?
Will these cachees be automatically rebuild during boot process?

Dalvik cache is associate with the booting of the phone... deleting it will generally not affect the performance of the phone and nor will it cause any problems with the installed apps and settings...
Deleting cache may improve the performance of the apps whose cache will be cleared.. Don't think that it'll make any major difference though..
Dalvik cache is rebuilt when you power on your phone after clearing dalvik cache.. the other cache is built as you use your applications.
that and a factory reset speed up my phone

What the hell is wrong with you?! Every time I open a topic in this section you advise people to wipe their phones. That's not what "help" means. Looks like you're a little post farmer...

[GUIDE] What should I know about a WIPE?

First of all, what is a Wipe?
A Wipe is a cleanup, which in some cases involves erasing all the contents of a file, partition, folder or whatever.
Wipes Listing:
Wipe data / factory reset:
Erases all our information and leaves the cell as factory or if you put any other rom leaves it with the newly installed rom.
It’s recommended when we want to change rom (clean install) or if we broke something in the OS as it returns everything to original state.
Caution: Make a Backup!
Wipe cache:
The cache is a memory that stores some settings of all apps, including the operating system, kernel, and games ... to access more quickly to these files later.
It’s recommended when we flash any zip. Recommended! It doesn’t hurt!
Wipe Dalvik-Cache:
Dalvik is another cache. So it’s recommended when we flash any zip and it doesn’t hurt!
Wipe SD: Ext Partition:
It recreates the partition table so just use it when the HOW TO say or if you move from different versions of ROMs. ADVANCED
Wipe Battery stats:
Displays the amount of battery charge remaining, when you are full, low remaining alerts… these values may be altered causing malfunction of alerts.
It’s recommended when we change ROM, Kernel or a patch. Extreme situation
Wipe rotate settings:
Saves the accelerometer, altimeter and other sensors. This cleaning restores their values again.
It’s recommended when we change ROM, Kernel or a patch. It doesn’t hurt!

Just a suggestion that Google admitted that wiping battery stats doesn't do any good to anything and in latest version of cwm, that option has been removed tooo.

It doesn't hurt just is not recommended a usual activation of the wipe. As you are hiding info to the system. Edited!

Wiping battery stats removes the batterystats.bin file, which contains low level info about which process did what for how long. Does nothing related to actually keeping track of the battery level, that stuff is in the kernel through fuel gauges and the like. what about /system
it does not get formatted when performing "wipe data/factory reset", and some devs recommend formatting it. The rom installation may do it automatically.
